A Memorial Day tribute for service members, veterans and families.
The East Moline American Legion Post carried out the long-standing tradition.
It’s a reminder of the sacrifice that can come while serving the country.
The reality of those sacrifices weighs heavily on veterans.
“Time where we reflect on all the people that have made the ultimate sacrifice and many veterans have friends who they are no longer here because of loss in combat,” said Robert Baecke with the American Legion Post 227.
Rock Island Arsenal’s Executive Officer to the Commanding General also attended the event.
He said they were reminded over the weekend the cost of service can have after they lost one in their unit.
“That impacts all of us so heavily, and we can’t imagine what the family is going through. Our heart breaks for that family, for that wife and kids who have to deal with it from here on out. They’ve got a long road ahead of them,” said Major Ronald Brown.
Major Brown said in addition to honoring the fallen soldiers, it’s also important this remembrance recognizes families as well.
