The renowned British singer-pianist Elton John won an Emmy Award for outstanding variety special (live) on Monday night, so becoming an official member of the exclusive EGOT club.
This is an incredible accomplishment. “Elton John Live- Farewell from Dodger Stadium,” the winning submission, is a riveting three-hour concert documentary that captivated Disney+ viewers.
Amazing humility at the EGOT victory
The 76-year-old legend thanked everyone, saying, “I am very honored to be among the select few EGOT winners who have also received Tony, Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar trophies. I have come this far with a great deal of love, commitment, and steadfast support from my global fan base.”
Already the recipient of five Grammys, two Oscars, and a Tony for his original score on “Aida,” Elton John cemented his place among the entertainment industry’s most talented performers.
He most recently won a Grammy in 2001 for “Elton John & Tim Rice’s Aida,” which was an additional feather in his already impressive crown.
The Path to Olympic Gold
John joins Viola Davis, who accomplished the milestone with a Grammy award last year, as the 19th individual to reach EGOT status. John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, and Whoopi Goldberg are notable EGOT recipients.
John’s excitement was evident as he celebrated winning his first-ever Emmy, even though he was unable to attend the event because of recent surgery.
John’s spouse David Furnish, who produced the concert special, said, “He screamed out loud” when he heard about the win.
Behind the Scenes- Recuperation and Achievement
John, who called it quits on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in 2023, had his hubby Facetime him during the awards event while he recovered in the UK after recent surgery.
According to Furnish, “He’s had his left knee replaced — which isn’t surprising when you think of the number of pianos he’s jumped off.”
At the end of his farewell tour, John played a Dodger Stadium show that drew over 50,000 fans and included celebrity guests including Dua Lipa and Brandi Carlile.
The Apple Music Super Bowl halftime performance and ABC’s Oscars coverage were defeated by the concert documentary.
An evening of artistic triumph
Elton John highlights, “Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy that it brings to all of our lives,” as he considers his EGOT victory. I am grateful to everyone who has helped me along the way in my profession. I am really appreciative.”
In this momentous occasion, Elton John not only says goodbye to the Yellow Brick Road but also solidifies his reputation as a genuine master in the entertainment industry.
