Susan G. Komen of the Quad Cities kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month today with the first inaugural Butterfly Brunch.

The event was held at the Radisson in Downtown Davenport. The mission is to raise money for research to prevent and cure breast cancer.

Organizers say this was the perfect way to kick off October.

Two keynote speakers were featured including Heidi Floyd. Floyd was diagnosed with stage three cancer while pregnant with her fourth child, Komen helped fund research that saved her and her baby.

After brunch and the speakers, attendees went across the street to a green space to release butterflies. The butterflies were to remember and celebrate those who have been affected by cancer.

“So butterflies are a symbol for many things: hope, transformation, beauty,” said Komen affiliate Jenny Brinkmeyer. “It was just the perfect analogy for what a breast cancer survivor goes through. “

Organizers say they had a great turnout. About 125 people attended the brunch and they raised almost $5,000 for the organization.
