Fred Wagner Obituary Wellman: Iowa Harness Racing longtime owner Fred Wagner dies at 85.
Lowell “Fred” Wagner of Wellman, passed away at the age of 85 on Monday, November 20, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital following a brief illness.
Iowa Harness Horseman’s Association announced Fred’s death via a statement shared on Facebook.
“Iowa Harness Racing lost longtime owner Fred Wagner of Wellman, Iowa passed away last night or early morning he’s crossed the finish line and entered heavens winner circle. He’ll be missed by many because Fred didn’t know a stranger! Till we meet again Fred our hearts are broken,” the statement said.
Fred was born November 14, 1938, north of Wellman, to Ivan and Dorothy (Miller) Wagner. He served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1967. He attended Muscatine Community College and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with an education degree.
Fred was dedicated to educating young people, and truly cared about their lives. He loved his family and especially his grandchildren. Fred developed a love for horses as a child, was a jockey and traveled with county fair pony rides, his obituary said.
