Hamish started his career as a reporter covering politics for regional broadcaster WIN in Canberra. He relocated to the United Kingdom, where he worked as a reporter for Channel 4 and ITV.

He made a name for himself as a news producer and reporter. He reported on big events such as the Asian tsunami and the London attacks. He provided live coverage for Channel 4 and ITV news. He also provided eyewitness accounts for the Australian networks Nine, Seven, and ABC.

Macdonald worked as a producer for Al Jazeera English’s regional headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Al Jazeera English is the Arabic network Al Jazeera’s English-language sister station. In the summer of 2006, he was employed as a news presenter at Al Jazeera English’s Kuala Lumpur bureau.

Macdonald announced his departure from Network Ten in September 2013. He will be stationed in New York City at first but will relocate to London later in 2014. In some cases, his new contract purportedly permits him to accept limited outside employment with other groups.
