Hair masks are not meant just for people with hair problems. They are versatile and magical hair treatments that not only help repair, nourish, and hydrate your hair, but can also help you maintain it. Whether your hair is healthy, conditioned, or completely untreated, hair masks can help.
There are various hair masks to choose from, depending on what your hair needs are. What’s more, you don’t really have to go to the salon to treat your hair. You can get the same (or better) results right at your home. In this article, we will discuss hair masks in detail and how you can use one to improve your hair health.
Table Of Contents
What Is A Hair Mask?
A hair mask is a deep conditioning treatment for hair. It is rich in nutrients and oils that nourish the hair. These ingredients are much more concentrated than those present in other hair products.
You can follow your shampoo with the application of a thick moisturizing hair mask, preferably containing hydrolyzed amino acids, silicones, and vegetable oils. This can help remove the residues from your hair without stripping the hair fibers (1).
A hair mask has other benefits too. We will explore them in the following section.
What Are The Benefits Of A Hair Mask?
The benefits of a hair mask depend on its ingredients (banana, olive oil, etc). Most hair masks generally have the following benefits:
- Decrease friction
- Detangle the hair
- Minimize frizz
- Improve combability
- Reduce hair breakage and damage
- Hydrate hair and seal in the moisture
- Make hair shinier
Hair masks are of different types. We will explore them in the upcoming section.
Types Of Hair Masks
1. Protein Hair Masks
If your hair feels stringy, stretchy, and weak, it is likely that it needs protein. Your hair is basically protein, and its deficiency can cause it to wear down over time. Treating your hair with protein masks every once a while will keep it healthy. However, if your hair is in good condition, you do not want to go overboard with hair protein treatments. Too much protein can make your hair really stiff and crisp.
Check out these protein-rich hair masks that you can make from the comfort of your home.
2. Hydrating Hair Masks
Determining whether your hair needs moisture is easy. Does your hair feel dry? Use a moisturizing hair mask. Too many split-ends or way too much frizz? Time for some moisture. Is it breaking easily? Moisture. Does it tangle and knot? Seriously, hit it with some moisture already. Even if your hair is perfectly healthy, you can never go wrong with a hydrating hair mask.
If you have dry or frizzy hair, check out these hair masks that can help.
3. Oil-Based Hair Masks
These work best when used in alternation with hydrating hair masks. Oil-based hair masks work to seal in moisture, keeping your hair hydrated for a longer duration. The oils used in these masks also help nourish your hair. Some common oils used in these oil-based hair masks are that of coconut, olive, almond, and argan.
4. Bond-Building Hair Masks
These are specially formulated for colored and treated hair. If you go to a salon, you will see the stylists treating hair with bond-building products. This mid-process treatment can really help cut down on the amount of damage that your hair is being put through.
If you’ve recently treated your hair with chemicals, it would be a good idea to invest in a bond builder as it can help reverse the damage by repairing and restoring the protein bonds in your hair shafts.
Let’s now talk about how you should be applying your hair mask. While you may think that slapping the mask over your hair is all there is to it, there are certain steps you can take to make the whole process more effective. Here’s what they are:
How To Apply A Hair Mask – 4 Simple Steps
Step 1 – Clean Your Hair
A lot of people don’t realize how important it is to clean their hair before they apply a hair mask. Dirt and product residue that build up in the hair can create a barrier around the hair shaft, keeping it from absorbing nutrients and moisture.
To avoid this, wash your hair with lukewarm water and shampoo. Do not condition your hair at this point. Squeeze the excess moisture out of your hair with a towel and let it air dry.
Step 2 – Apply The Mask
Once your hair is dry, untangle it using a wide-toothed wooden comb. Get rid of all the tangles, and then, section your hair. Start applying the hair mask from the roots to the tips of your hair. Focus more on the tips, as these would have borne the most damage. Run the comb through your hair again once it is completely covered in the mask. This will help ensure that all of your hair strands have been coated.
Step 3 – Let It Process
Let your hair process. The effectiveness of the hair mask can be boosted by creating a warm environment for your hair. You can do this by wrapping your hair with a hot towel and keeping it on for as long as your hair treatment requires you to. The processing time depends on the hair mask and can range from 10 minutes to overnight. You can heat up a towel by dipping it in hot water and wringing the excess water out.
Step 4 – Wash It Out
Wash the hair mask out using shampoo and cool water. Finish with a conditioner. The cool water helps seal your cuticles, keeping your hair feeling moisturized and nourished for long. Squeeze the excess water out of your hair using a towel and proceed to let your hair air dry.
Things To Remember
- Using a hair mask once a week is a sure shot way of ensuring optimum hair health.
- Do not rub your hair dry with a towel. Vigorous rubbing will cause cuticle damage, leading to breakage and frizzy hair.
- Always use cold water to wash your hair as this will help seal your hair cuticles, minimize frizz, and keep your hair moisturized. You can use warm water to wash your hair before you apply the hair mask because open cuticles at this point will make your hair ready to receive moisture and nourishment.
- Always use a wide-toothed wooden comb to untangle your hair. This will prevent tangling and static.
- It is important that you treat your hair with the right hair masks. Using a protein mask when your hair is already loaded with protein might make it too stiff.
- You do not have to buy expensive hair masks. Instead, you can make your own at home with simple ingredients like eggs, coconut oil, olive oil, bananas, and avocados.
Now that you know how to apply a hair mask, there should be nothing keeping you from making it a permanent part of your hair care routine. Hair masks not only nourish your hair and make it stronger but also improve scalp health. Follow these four simple steps and show your hair some TLC.

It’s a common misconception that hair serum will weigh down naturally fine hair. Instead, it all depends on which serum you use and in what quantity. Hair serum has a squadron of fans who claim that it has revolutionised the appearance of their hair, while other people aren’t quite sure where and how it fits into their haircare routines. We take a closer look at what exactly hair serum is, how it works, whether it’s right for you and, if so, how to get the most out of it.
What is hair serum used for?
Hair serum is a liquid-based treatment usually formulated using silicones that provide a protective layer over the hair fibre, assisting in smoothing frizz. This smooth layer then reflects the light, which is how serum gives your hair a shiny, not greasy, finish. For some people, this removes the need to use straighteners to smooth out the hair afterwards: great for cutting styling time in half and saving your hair from heat damage.
It’s not common knowledge, but hair serum isn’t just used to tame frizz. The right serum for your hair type can address multiple concerns, from smoothing the hair, adding shine and detangling to repairing damage and protecting from pollution. Hair serum is also a good way to hide split ends in-between visits to the hairdresser.
How to apply hair serum?
Hair serum is normally applied onto wet or towel-dried hair after shampooing and conditioning, although some can also be applied onto dry hair, like the Absolut Repair Wheat Oil Hair Serum from Serie Expert. Apply a few drops of the serum to your palm, then rub hands together and smooth down the hair from the roots to the tip. Thicker or longer hair may require more drops. A comb can be helpful to remove any tangles and ensure the serum is evenly distributed.
Because serum provides a protective coat over the hair, it can prevent damage when applied before using heated tools such as hair straighteners. The protective smoothing serum from Steampod Care Products has Pro-Keratin technology and Steam-activated ingredients to give frizz-free high shine while also protecting against heat damage.
Your questions answered
We answer some of the most common questions that our professional haircare experts get asked when it comes to hair serum.
Should I use hair serum if I have naturally fine hair?
It’s a common misconception that hair serum will weigh down naturally fine hair. Instead, it all depends on which serum you use and in what quantity. A serum formulated to repair and strengthen hair, like the Absolut Repair Hair Serum, will actually give thicker, healthier-looking results. If your hair lacks volume, or quickly becomes greasy at the roots, focus your serum application on the lengths and tips, and only use a couple of drops.
If you’re looking to actively thicken your hair, try the Serioxyl Denser Hair Serum from L’Oréal Professionnel, used in a three-month daily programme, to add density to the hair and achieve greater volume and thickness.
What’s the best hair serum?
A with any haircare product, finding the best hair serum depends on your hair type and concerns. If you’re unsure about which serum will give you the best results, ask your L’Oréal Professionnel hairdresser. They will be able to diagnose your hair and suggest the most suitable hair serum to include in your haircare routine.
When should I start using hair serum?
If you’ve noticed your hair looks dull and lacklustre, it tangles and breaks easily, if you suffer from frizz or flyaways, or are a regular user of heated tools to straighten or curl your hair, serum could be your haircare solution. Many also find that hair serum is a must when it comes to humid weather, vacations, or any situation where frizz and flyaways can be a particular pain.
What’s the difference between a hair oil and hair serum?
Hair oil and serum may have similar textures, but are not the same. The former is designed to penetrate past the hair cuticles into the cortex of the fibre itself to restore the hair after damage such as post-colouring or after over-styling. The latter, as we have seen, is used as a styling tool to protect hair, increase shine and reduce frizz by providing a glossy and smoothing layer over the hair fibre.

In Detail L’Oreal Paris Total Repair 5 Hair Masque Review and My Experience
It comes in a white opaque tub packaging with a red coloured top. Tub Packaging is sure quite easy to use but it does get quite messy in the shower. It has has all the details mentioned on the packaging. The screw top is sturdy so I guess I can consider it to be travel friendly. I wish they had this in a smaller size, may be in a tube.
The consistency is creamy and moderately thick. Because of the nice creamy consistency, it is easy to apply on the hair. Smells almost like all the other Loreal products.
How I Use it
After Towel Drying my hair: When I use it after towel drying my hair, I need slightly more than the regular amount. I leave it on for 2 minutes and then wash it off with cold water.
Without towel Drying, After washing my hair with shampoo: Again, I apply it evenly on the lengths if my hair concentrating on the ends. After letting it sit for 2 minutes approximately, I wash it off with cold water.
Whichever way I use it, I find that this hair masque makes my hair very soft and silky to touch. Does not make my hair very shiny but at the same time does not let my hair look dull. Now let us talk about the long term benefits, does it really repair my hair? I would say not really. It did made my hair feel soft for a couple of days but I don’t see a long lasting repairing effect on my hair. As you stop using this product, hair turns back to its usual self. So for lasting effects, one needs to continue using this product. Also, due to some reason if you apply more than the required amount of the product, it tends to build up in the hair and makes the hair greasy. I would say this will be best suited for beauties with dry hair type.
Pros of L’Oreal Paris Total Repair 5 Hair Masque
1. Tub packaging means zero wastage of the product.
2. Creamy consistency makes it very easy to apply on the hair.
3. I really like the loreal products smell and it stays for a day.
4. Makes my hair really soft and silky.
5. Reduces tangles and frizz in the hair.
6. Very affordable as compared to other hair masques.
Cons of L’Oreal Paris Total Repair 5 Hair Masque
1. If applied in excess, it can make hair greasy.
2. I did not experience any long term permanent effects on my hair.
3. Effects last only when you continue using this product.
MBF Advices
1. If you have dry hair type, this will suit your hair type.
2. Oily hair beauties may not like it as much.
3. Do not apply hair masques/conditioners on the roots of the hair.
Will I Repurchase this?
I want to try more Loreal hair masks but if I get it, I will like to use it again.

Intensely nourishes hair
I always find it a big challenge to fight all the environmental damage caused to my hair. Since my work regime needs me to stay outdoors, it makes it difficult for me to fight all the environmental irritants. My colleague suggested me to try the Loreal Professional X tenso care masque. She shared her experience of how her hair texture improved drastically after using this masque. It contains Pro Keratin plus Incell. She mentioned that the masque contains botanical extracts which help in adding moisture to the hair and make them look healthier. It is best suited for people with straight hair. It comes packaged in a tub format. It does not leave the hair oily or weigh it down. The consistency is creamy and thick . It has a mild fragrance to it which is not very overpowering. It is very easy to apply this on the hair. I wash my hair with a mild shampoo and then keep the hair mask on for 5-10 minutes. I then wash it off with cold water. Initially after washing my hair, I found it very frizzy and unmanageable. However after using this mask, my hair felt less frizzy. The hair felt extremely smooth and full of life. They looked more shinier and bouncy. I was extremely impressed with the results. As the hair got less frizzy, I could also see that my hairfall had reduced. I would recommend one to not apply the mask from the roots of the hair as it may damage the hair. Application should be from the mid of the hair moving downwards. I think this product is decent and does justice to the claims made and the price too. Would surely recommend this product.

L’Oreal Professional X-Tenso Care Masque is a masque which is a must use or a must buy if you have had your hair treated chemically. Be that straightening or even colouring. This masque will help you retain the shine and also the procedure of whatever was done for a longer period. The fibre integrity remains intact, which is a great thing. I mean you hardly have such products which help you maintain the glow and shine which were promised after the procedure. There were so many episodes where the hair looks completely different from what it was on the day of the process. I used to wonder do we get parlour like hair just in the parlours. Do we need to shell out so much just to make sure your hair remains the same way it was on the day of straightening! This masque renews reduced moisture level and maintains volume in turn protecting natural shield of your hair fibers. The best part of the L’Oreal Professional X-Tenso Care Masque is that it is affordable and you need not shell out a bomb to have your hair in place! That was an amazing point for me which honestly i loved. There are so many products in the market which claim the repair process and also claim to do the impossible, but very few stay true to their claims. L’Oreal Professional X-Tenso Care Masque is one such product that sticks to what was promised! If you have straightened you hair and if you want the results to last a little longer that what it was claimed, I recommend you use the L’Oreal Professional X-Tenso Care Masque. This is the best for the job of maintenance! It does a fabulous job! This will not disappoint you. Go ahead and use it!

While we all know the current lockdown situation is totally necessary to keep as many of us safe as possible, we can’t help but think fondly back to the days when we were allowed to visit the hair salon.
While you might be able to wait for an actual cut for a bit longer, anyone who dyes their hair is by now staring at their growing roots in the mirror, wondering what they can do at home to disguise them until they can reunited with their trusty hairdresser once more.

Now, you could take the Holly Willoughby approach, which is to do a DIY at-home root touch up, bit if the thought of letting anyone except your hairdresser come near you with hair dye fills you with fear (including yourself), there’s another alternative you can try – and it’s even more affordable.

If you’re (not a natural) blonde or have highlighted or greying hair, L’Oreal’s colour protecting purple-hued intensive hair mask is ideal for combatting brassiness and correcting colour, which can help to blend in your roots so that regrowth isn’t nearly as obvious.
