Color is yet another distinction in the selection of an LED flashlight bulb. I usually carry two flashlights when I travel.
One is a small(ish) Fenix LD12 that I place in my shoe before going to bed. If there’s a fire, I’ll instinctively grab my shoes and won’t have to scrabble around for a flashlight. I also carry this around in my bag or daypack in case I face a power failure in a mall (it happened in Manila) or spend too much time photographing a glorious sunset and have to walk back 2km at night along a snake-infested forest path (Sabah).
My other flashlight is a head torch or head-mounted light. If you’ve ever tried to find your keys in the dark or use the toilet paper in an outhouse by sticking your flashlight in your mouth to keep your hands free, you’ll immediately understand why I have this.
This is the ideal wish list item or birthday present request. You’ll be reminded of the person who gave it to you each time you use it – it will be a little bit of home to carry with you.
Once upon a time, flashlights were incandescent, with little bulbs that burned out after a few weeks or broke easily. You probably even have a few of these lying around. These days, the best flashlight is an LED. It’s lighter, more compact, your battery lasts longer and the LED bulb itself typically lasts 50,000 hours. If you use it every day for five hours – that’s an awful lot of night reading – it should last about 10,000 days, or 27 years!

TIP: Try to run all your gear on the same battery size if you can – or on a maximum of two sizes. You can then raid another item’s batteries in an emergency. Store new flashlight batteries away from metal in waterproof containers. If they’re loose and touch each other, they may get discharged, leak in your pack or start a fire!
Is it waterproof?
You don’t need a diving flashlight (unless you’re diving, of course) but if your flashlight gets wet it may fail when you need it most. To be sure you really have a waterproof flashlight always buy a reliable brand – don’t just believe the writing on the box and check reviews and popularity. Some are poor copies made in cheap labor countries and may not have been sealed properly.
How many and what style?
I love the convenience of a good head light, for everything from late night reading to bathroom trips in strange places. Imagine NOT having a headtorch if you have to go in the middle of the night! So that’s my first choice and I usually use a headband designed specially to hold my Fenix. Often I also carry a small photon flashlight (not waterproof so be careful) I wear around my neck (not to mention it comes in cute flashlight colors).
What power output and what size?
I like a good beam when I need it but I’m demanding – I also want a low setting I can use for hours and which I know will last if I’m in a tight spot. In my opinion the best flashlight for travel is the lightest possible one. On the other hand if you want to use it as a baseball bat just ignore everything I just mentioned. Still, you’ll pay a penalty in weight if you go this route. It’s like deciding whether to take a point-and-shoot camera or big bulky photo gear.
How reliable is it and how much should you pay?
Make sure your flashlight can’t accidentally turn itself on. If it does, even the best flashlight will run out of juice. This by the way is another good reason to carry not one but two – one can always serve as an emergency flashlight!
There are many good brands out there and I’ve tested quite a few of them.
In terms of value for money, I prefer Fenix flashlights. (Use these Amazon.com links to research or buy their little LD12 or the larger LD22, both of which fit into the Fenix flashlight headband).
Specs: The LD12 takes one AA battery (easy to find); it has four intensities, an SOS mode and a strobe (which you can use to disorient an attacker). On its lowest setting it will run for 97 hours.
The larger LD22 takes two AA batteries, is nearly twice as bright as the LD12 and will run for 110 hours on its lowest setting. Both are waterproof.
You might also have a look at the tiny photon flashlights for your keyring or jacket or backpack zipper and if you’re staying in the city, the stylish E01 should do the trick (but don’t try to put this slim item in your headband or it will fall out!)
Whatever you decide, please don’t skimp here and do choose the best you can afford. It’s one of those bits of kit you’ll be very glad to have. In a pinch, the combination of blinding light and the scalloped metal hood at one end could be dissuasive in case of an attack.

If the beam is wider, the brightness of the light will be dimmer. Interesting fact is you will find this 1 lumen useful if you are in pitch black darkness. But this is well enough for reading purpose (consideration: the book should be 1 feet away where the beam spot is smaller and brighter). Normally, 2x AA battery flashlight with 1 lumen will give you few days run time.
10-30 lumens: this amount of lumens produces brightness like a candle. Surprised!! Because it is very hard to compare as the brightness of candle is not focused through beam like flashlight. But 10 lumens flashlight is well enough for your hiking, camping, backpacking activities. Everyday carry (EDC) refers not only to your concealed carry firearm but also to all of the related gear you should carry EVERY day. You don’t just strap on a firearm on the days that you might be traveling to a high-crime area of town or when you have a “premonition,” so you should think about your other EDC gear just as regularly. Let’s take a look at the key factors in choosing a tactical flashlight for everyday carry (and we can rule out the app on your iPhone here and now).
Flashlight Reliability
Reliability trumps every other consideration. You should not be selecting your EDC flashlight from the checkout line at a big-box store. “Two for the price of one” isn’t a bargain if neither works.
Your tactical light might be called to duty in a crisis or, if nothing else, can come in really handy more times than you expect. If you can, purchase your light from one of the same companies the military and police do. Your life and the lives of your loved ones are certainly worth more than bargain basement prices.
Everyday Carry Pocket Comfort
“Comfort” is not the first word that comes to mind in conjunction with an EDC tactical light. Normally (I am guilty of this), the discussion centers around lumen output and run time. But in thinking about the EDC mission, I realized that comfort is actually more important than lumens. All the lumens in the world won’t matter if they’re sitting on top of your dresser at home when you find yourself in a darkened alley or a major power outage.
Not everyone has the luxury of dressing with their light mounted on a belt. If you think about it, wearing a belt-mounted light everywhere advertises that you are not only prepared for darkness but also prepared for a gunfight. My EDC light always rides in my trouser pocket. Larger-sized EDC lights get pretty uncomfortable banging against my leg after four to six hours. Size and weight matter in EDC gear comfort, whether the operator is standing, walking or sitting. And sharp bezel crenulations will wear out your pocket liner in a hurry.
Lumen Output
As LED tactical lights have developed over the years, power output in the 200- to 600-lumen range seems to be more than adequate. Above 600 lumens, the lights often aren’t pocket-comfortable. I would say 600 lumens is the ideal combination of light output and everyday carry comfort.
EDC Light Operating System
You can also go too small in terms of an EDC light to the point that it is difficult to hold on to or operate in a high-threat situation.
The control system is important. Switches must have momentary and constant-on tail-cap functions that can be controlled with only one hand. The reason I review Streamlight lights so often is that they consistently have the best operating controls on the market (in my opinion), although there are other decent lights out there. Surefire and MAGLITE are other companies that have been around just as long, and First-Light USA makes a highly versatile series of tactical EDC lights as well.
Another valuable asset these days are lights with multi-fuel power sources, such as lights that can interchangeably use rechargeable or lithium/alkaline cells. Packing along alternate fuel sources in your gear bag can be critical in long-term power-outage events.
Conclusions on Tactical Flashlights
When making a tactical light selection for everyday carry, check out retailers who can let you handle the various models available. This way, you’ll get a feel for pocket comfort and operating controls before purchasing. The reliability of the brand name will speak for itself. If you can’t afford a higher-priced light, have the salesperson show you other brands he or she is familiar with that are lower cost. In the end, the selection of an EDC carry light should follow the rule of holster selection: “Don’t buy a $1,000 gun and stuff it in a $10 holster.” Likewise, don’t buy a $1,000 gun and back it up with a “trash light.”

Why LED? On my keychain I carry a Maratac AAA Rev 3 . As the name suggests, it’s powered by a single AAA battery and, in high mode it produces 138 Lumens. Compare that to a traditional, incandescent bulb Maglite; the ubiquitous 3 D-Cell battery model puts out just 76.8 Lumens.
The battery life on my little keychain light? Up to 55 hours. The Maglite? About two hours. The bulb life on the Maratac: 50,000 hours. I dunno the Maglite’s, but I remember replacing them pretty often when I was a kid. Their prices are both in the $20 range.
Really, the only thing the traditional flashlight does better than the LED is beat up innocent people. But I’m not a cop.
So, if LED lights are so miraculous, why do you need a buyer’s guide? Well, innovation in the space has moved so fast that it’s out-paced many of the traditional players — both manufacturers and retail — in the space and many of the actual benefits of the technology are lost in the race to produce ever-brighter lights and confused by bullshit marketing, needless features and other nonsense.
Who’s This Guide For? The everyman. If you’re already a flashaholic ( a real thing! ), then this guide’s going to be over-simplified. But, literally anyone else should be able to benefit and should carry a flashlight. At the very least, they’ll help you find a keyhole, walk down a dark path or find something you dropped on the ground at night. They’ll do that with much more light for much longer than your phone will ever deliver, all without running down its battery.
Battery Types — The Most Important Feature You know traditional batteries — AAs and AAAs — but the profusion of chemical compounds within them has gotten a little confusing. While any AA or AAA-powered light will run on traditional NiMH cells, you’re a lot better off opting for Lithiums. They’re going to be a little pricier, but more than exceed the additional cost with longer run times and brighter light outputs. More importantly, Lithium batteries have a 10-year shelf life. That means that if you’re buying a flashlight to leave in your glovebox in case of breakdown (or any similar long-term storage use), it’ll work when you need it, even if that ends up being years and years down the road. It also means you can buy batteries in bulk, without fear of them going bad and wasting your money.
AA and AAAs: The vast majority of you will be best served by sticking with these traditional battery types. While their performance is a little lower than more exotic varieties, you’ll be able to find the batteries you need in virtually every retail establishment in the world. And the performance of good LED flashlights is such that you really don’t need the additional output or run times of more expensive, harder-to-find cells.
CR2: Originally developed for digital cameras, garage door openers, security devices and such CR2 batteries pack a ton of performance into an incredibly tiny package. Lights powered by these batteries are tiny, yet very bright.
CR123: The most common very-high performance lithium battery option can kick out an extraordinarily powerful beam and these batteries are again very compact. But, they are expensive and like CR2s, can sometimes be hard to find, especially outside of large population centers.
18650, 14500 and other super high performance, rechargeable batteries: The muscle cars of the battery world, these things pack so much punch that they’ll destroy lights not designed to use them and may, in some cases, even be dangerous. Lights powered by these can be insanely bright, but to the point where practicality is actually reduced. Yes, you can actually have a light too bright for most uses, having to squint to shield your eyes from its beam at night is a little pointless unless you belong to a search and rescue team. Avoid, unless you have some specific, speciality need to turn the night into day.
Button Cells: Don’t bother, they’re a pain. Other battery types can deliver greater performance with a size increase so small as to render it irrelevant.
If you intend to buy several flashlights to distribute to family members, store in various locations or use other electronics frequently, it can be a great idea to use common batteries across all of them. Doing so will make buying and storing batteries that much easier and allow you to swap batteries between devices if and when necessary. Going all-AA or all-AAA just makes using all this stuff so much easier.

Flashlights are seemingly simple devices, so it can be easy to forget to do your research before purchasing one. But it’s worth knowing what goes into these handy torches—especially when you consider that you’re counting on whichever one you buy being reliable during power outages and camping trips for years to come.
Bulbs and Features
Most all flashlights now use LED bulbs, which means you don’t have to worry about the dimness and quick battery drain of older incandescent flashlights. And because LEDs are so efficient (most of the energy they draw from the battery goes toward producing light, not heating a filament as with incandescents), you also don’t have to sweat replacing the bulb, since most LEDs are intended to last as long as the flashlight itself.

How Flashlights are Rated
Flashlights will often have an IP rating—like IP65 or IP68—that give you an idea of their durability. The first number indicates its protection from solids; six is the maximum, meaning it should be completely impenetrable to things like sand and dust. And the second number indicates how water-resistant or waterproof it is, where eight is the maximum and means it can be submerged in water deeper than one meter. Sometimes you’ll also see a rating like IPX4, or IP6X, where the “X” simply means that the product hasn’t been tested for protection from solids or liquids.
That rating only gives a partial picture of the flashlight’s durability, however, and you’ll also want to take into account things like the materials used—ranging from lightweight but less-than-durable plastic to rubberized enclosures to heavy-duty anodized aluminum—and whether the flashlight floats in water in addition to being waterproof, not to mention the warranty.
