Hi everyone,
New here but I could really use the help. So I bought myself a used 3DS XL that has the “error has occurred” issue. I’d like to do a factory reset so I can system update but I can’t get into system settings. I have also tried the button combination (LB+RB+UP+A) while booting the device but I get stuck on a black screen .
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest removing the SD card and disabling the wi-fi, as they appear to be things that can cause errors upon booting, but if neither of those work, you’re probably going to have to send it off to Nintendo, as you won’t be able to do anything if you can’t reach any form of menu.

The only solutions left I can think of would involve opening up and seeing if anything is wrong internally, but it may be best not to mess with that.
Unfortunately I think you’re going to have to return it to Nintendo.

Just had a look for you and got this is from Nintendo’s own support.
What to Do:
Press and hold the POWER Button down until the system resets; this may take some time.
Once the system is powered down, press the POWER Button once to turn it back on.

Thanks for replying. I know how to get off the black screen the problem is it shouldn’t be going to that black screen in the first place. When you start the device while holding the button combination it should take you to a system update but instead mine goes to black screen. I need a way to factory reset the device without having to get to system settings.

I don’t believe there is a way to do that. Removing the internal battery for a while “MAY” do something, but I don’t know for sure.
Either way I don’t think a factory reset will solve this black screen problem, most likely a system firmware or hardware problem.

You have to unscrew the back casing off your 3DS, the battery is obvious when you do it, no need to go down to the motherboard etc.

I meant internal one, I’ve removed that one and it doesn’t seem to reset anything. Thought there might be another one somewhere inside.

I don’t know if the 3DS has a CMOS battery or equivalent.
If you really wanted to dig that deep, it’d probably look like a clock battery, or CR2032 battery somewhere on the motherboard, but I have a feeling there won’t be one.

What to do when your 3DS is locked up and won’t work

Like any computer, tablet, or other handheld video game console, the Nintendo 3DS can periodically crash or lock up, preventing you from using it. Performing a hard reset on the 3DS usually provides an easy fix, but you might have to do some additional troubleshooting if you continue having problems.
This article applies to all models of the Nintendo 3DS including the 3DS XL and 2DS.
How to Hard Reset a Nintendo 3DS
If your device freezes while you’re in the middle of playing a game:
Press and hold down the Power button until the 3DS turns off. This may take about 10 seconds.
Press the Power button again to turn the 3DS back on.
In most cases, this will solve the problem, and you can return to playing your game.
A hard reset does not restore the 3DS back to its default settings. A hard reset is simply a reboot, which is different from a factory reset.
Check for Updates to the Nintendo eShop Software
If the 3DS continues freezing only when you use one specific game or application, go to the eShop and check for an update:
If you’re having trouble accessing the eShop, then you may need to reset the PIN on your 3DS.
On the bottom screen, tap the shopping cart icon on the home menu to open the Nintendo eShop.
In the eShop, tap Menu in the top-left corner of the screen.
Scroll down and select Settings / Other.
In the History section, tap Updates.
Look for your game or app. If you see Update Available above it, tap Download or Update and follow the on-screen prompts.
If you already installed the most current update, try deleting the app or game and downloading it again to see if that fixes the issue. See what to do if the update fails.
Previously purchased games and apps on the 3DS can be downloaded again at no cost.
Use the Nintendo 3DS Download Repair Tool
When all else fails, use the Nintendo 3DS Download Software Repair Tool:
On the bottom screen, tap the shopping cart icon on the home menu to open the Nintendo eShop.
In the eShop, tap the Menu icon at the top of the screen.
Scroll and select Settings / Other.
In the History section, select Redownloadable Software.
Tap Your Downloads at the very bottom of the screen.
Locate the game you want to repair and tap Software Info under it.
Scroll down and tap Repair Software, then tap OK to check for errors. You can choose to repair the software even if no errors are found.
When the software check is finished, tap OK and Download to start the repair. The software download does not overwrite any saved data.
To finish, tap Continue and the Home button.
If you’re still having issues, contact Nintendo’s customer service department for further assistance.
There may come a time when you may need to factory reset your Nintendo 3DS. Maybe you’re getting rid of it, or maybe you just want a fresh start. Either way, it’s an easy process. Here’s how to do it.
Step One: Make Sure It’s Connected to Wi-Fi
If you have your Nintendo Network ID connected to your 3DS, you’ll first need to make sure the device is connected to the internet before you can factory reset it, so the NNID can be unlinked from the 3DS.
Thus, if you don’t have a NNID signed into your 3DS, you don’t actually have to worry about this step. But if you do, then you’ll need to make sure it’s connected first.
It will automatically do this when you try to reset the system, but you can also do it ahead of time by jumping into the Settings menu (it’s the wrench icon in the list of installed games and apps) and choosing “Internet Settings.”
Step Two: Factory Reset
Once you’re sure it’s connected to Wi-Fi, it’s time to factory reset it. Start by jumping into the Settings menu—it’s the wrench icon on the bottom home screen.
From here, tap on “Other Settings.”
Scroll all the way over to the very last screen and choose “Format System Memory.”
It will ask if you’re ready to connect to the internet. Tap “OK.”
It will take a few seconds to connect, then present you with a warning to let you know what’s going to happen: all data will be deleted. If you’re ready to move forward, tap “Next.”
This screen will let you know the Nintendo Network ID will be unlinked from this device. Tap “Next.”
The final screen should let you know that if you want to link your NNID to a new 3DS system, you’ll need to perform a system transfer. If you’re ready to format the system, tap “Format.”
And that’s that. You can now set up your 3DS from scratch, or sell it for someone else to enjoy.
You may want to know how to factory reset nintendo 3ds game or restore the system to factory settings. Usually, troubleshooting is necessary when you soft-bricked your system or want to flip your 3Ds without your data saved on it. Other Nintendo 3ds factory resets are also useful, especially when you want to refresh your system.
You’ll learn how to factory reset Nintendo 3ds console with or without a pin. You’ll also see how to troubleshoot other problems.
How To Factory Reset Nintendo 3ds Without Pin?
Have you forgotten your Nintendo 3Ds password but want to do a hard reset?
First, you’ll need to reset your pin through your secret question. Since you can’t remember, here’s what to do.
Navigate to “Settings” and tap on“Parental Controls.” Click “Forgot Pin.”
The system will prompt you to provide an answer to your security question. Click “I Forgot” again.
Wait while the system generates a 10 digit “Inquiry Number.”
The inquiry number will appear at the bottom of the screen. Note down this number and your system date. Usually, customer support will use this number to generate a master key for you. But you won’t have to make use of any support. Here is a website that automates the process for you.
Head over to this website. Input your inquiry number and system date in the appropriate fields. The site will generate a master key for you.
Go back to where you left off on your Nintendo. Click “Ok” and input the master key you’ve generated. Success! You’ll now be prompted to reset your pin and secret question.
Now, follow the process below to perform your 3ds hard reset.
Hard Reset for Nintendo 3DS XL:
You’ll need your pin and internet connection.
Tap on “System Settings.” Navigate to “Other Settings,” scroll to the right, and locate “Format System Memory,” and enter your pin. After that, you’ll be prompted to connect to the internet.
The system will warn you about all data and information that’ll be lost. Continue clicking“Next” until the system request you to confirm the format request. Accept to finish.
Note: The process can take about 2 to 10 minutes depending on the amount of information on your system.
Factory Reset for Nintendo DSI XL Without A Pin:
From the “Menu,” tap “Start.” Select “Parental Controls.”When the system asks for your pin, select “I Forgot.”You’ll be prompted to provide an answer to your secret question. Do it incorrectly three times. After three attempts, the system will display an “Inquiry Number” at the bottom of your 3Ds.
Go to this website to generate a new master key with your inquiry number. From where you left off on your Nintendo 3D console, input the master key. You can now format your DSI XL using the step outlined earlier.
Here’s how to fix other issues with your Nintendo 3Ds
How to Fix Nintendo Frozen Screen?
Usually, an accidental drop or water splash can soft-brick your system. Follow the steps below to unfreeze your Nintendo 3Ds.
Step 1: Press and hold the power button until the screen turns off.
Step 2: Wait for 5 or more minutes before you turn the system on again.
Step 3: When your system is up and running again, select“System Settings.” Choose “Other Setting” and tap“System Update.”Usually, this should fix the soft brick.
Note: After step 2, you might be welcomed with the Black Screen of Death, i.e., a condition whereby the two displays went black with only the blue power LED on. When you encounter this, repeat step 1 and 2.
How to Reset Your Nintendo DS Game Data:
Nintendo DS writes titles’ data to the game cartridge, unlike other consoles. This makes the process simple.
Option 1:
Power on your DS and load the game you wish to delete its data. Navigate through the “Main Menu” to find the“Option Screens.”Select the “Delete All Game Save Data” if your title features the option.
Option 2:
This method applies when the specified title doesn’t feature “automatic game data reset” or you want to wipe clean the cartridge.
Power off your Nintendo DS, ensuring there’s no cartridge inside. Now, power it on again. When the system boot to the main system menu, insert the cartridge you wish to delete its data. An icon corresponding to the inserted cartridge should appear.
Click on the cartridge’s icon when it appears. Simultaneously, press and hold the combination of “A,” “B,”“X,”“Y,”“R,”and“L” buttons. This should clear all data and information on the cartridge.
Finally:
I hope this guide helps you ‘how to factory reset Nintendo 3ds’ with several 3Ds troubleshoots. However, be certain when you want to hard reset 3ds because it’s usually impossible to recover lost data.
It’s not complicated to learn how to soft reset your 3DS, this will only need a few key combinations and a bit of memorizing skill so you can use it in the future.
In playing core series Pokemon games and some other Pokemon games, you will find a feature which often called soft resetting. A soft reset is way faster than hard reset since you are only resetting the game itself and not the system.
The soft resetting feature is useful when your game hangs up or freezes for whatever reasons and you want to start over without deleting the Pokemon save file.
When you soft reset, you will need to press the appropriate button combinations and this will result to return the game to the startup screen.
Using Soft Reset
A soft reset is beneficial as it can make influence the Pseudorandom number generation values generated of a Pokemon game for an in-game event (Shiny, particular IVs or Nature).
You can do soft reset anytime, but not while saving a game. For Pokemon players, soft resetting is commonly used for an attempt to encounter shiny Pokemon or often referred to as Shiny resetting.
Soft Resetting Button Combinations for Nintendo 3DS
To soft reset on Nintendo 3DS simply press and hold “L”+”R”+”Start” or “Select”. When done correctly, the screen will immediately turn to white and the game will restart.
Video
Want to see how soft resetting is done in 3DS? I recommend watching this Youtube video.
Conclusion
Now that you already know how to do the soft resetting trick. You can now utilize the method of capturing a Pokemon with desirable nature, stats or if you’re lucky enough, a shiny Pokemon. Good luck and have fun.

Nintendo Support Forums Nintendo 3DS Family factory reset
to be honest I was stupid enough to get hooked on the homebrew trash and I tried to change out my sd card ( with my data on it including: games, game data, backgrounds ,save data backups for downloaded games, mii’s, my mii plaza data, and other current data I owned) with an sd card my brother once owned when he had a 2ds. So I plugged the card to my Chromebook to copy all his data and paste it in a separate file. I started watching videos about installing homebrew (which to me I now know that it’s just a troll) and did what they told me. I finally find the homebrew launcher which told me to find out the sys code thing on the system settings, I found out that the launcher only supported 11.0, 11.1, 11.2, and 11.3, but my 3ds was on ver. 11.4.
without thinking I immediately went to settings to system format and wiped out the sd card and started doing the tutorials and of course failed. So I gave up and plugged in my sd card (with my data in it) and realized nothing changed. the background was still white, my Softwares were not there, everything was gone, even my friends who moved away to other countries. I was so mad and frustrated I tried everything but nothing worked. I cried all night that my data I had since I was 9 years old. but when I plugged it in the computer, all of my data was there. Can someone please tell me if there is a way to restore my data back.
Best Answer
I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but no. The Nintendo 3DS family of systems are designed to basically encrypt each file on an SD Card so that those downloaded games and save files for those digital games will only work with and on that particular Nintendo 3DS system with that information and that system version. Performing a factory reset is no different to the SD Card than it is trying to use that SD Card on another system. Because the information of the SD Card and the system do not match each other, the data on the SD Card becomes null and void to the system. While you should be able to redownload your previously purchased games and downloadable content from the Nintendo eShop once you re-link your Nintendo Network ID to your system, you’ll still have to start all of your games over from the beginning once they are redownloaded.

Are you ready to sell your Nintendo 3DS XL? Or is it acting up and you want to start over?
Read on (or watch the video above) for step by step instructions.
Before starting, make sure you have WiFi connection.
1) Click on system settings (looks like a wrench)
2) Click on other settings
3) Scroll to the right and click on Format System Memory
5) Read the warnings!
6) Confirm reset by click on Format.
This should take 2-5 minutes depending on how much information you have saved on your Nintendo 3DS XL.
