How to Make Cheese Toast

Cheese toastie, grilled cheese, or whatever you call it, a toasted cheese sandwich is a beautiful thing. Filling the gap as a working-from-home lunch, a quick dinner before (or after) the pub, or a guaranteed cure for the morning after, you can’t beat salty, crispy, toasty bread filled with ridiculously oozy cheese.

“I’m not messing about here – this is the ultimate one and it’s going to blow your mind. But there is a particular sequence of events that needs to happen in order to achieve the No. 1 toasted cheese sarnie. And we won’t score any points for buying expensive, artisan bread here. It’s important to go for something neutral and, in my eyes, only a white bloomer will do.”

So, grab 2 slices of bread, choose your cheese and follow this step-by-step cheese toastie recipe that will always make you feel good.

Serves 1
Takes 15 minutes

  1. Lightly butter the bread on both sides. How to Make Cheese Toast
  2. To one piece of bread, add a nice grating of good-quality cheese that melts well, like Cheddar, Red Leicester or a mixture of the two. How to Make Cheese Toast
  3. Place your second piece of bread on top, then cook in a sturdy non-stick frying pan on a medium heat for about 3 minutes on each side. This is important, because if it gets too coloured too quickly you won’t get the gorgeous ooze and melt in the middle, and this is all about encouraging that internal cheese lava flow. 4. When lightly golden on both sides, lift the toastie out of the pan and grate a little layer of cheese into the pan where it was sitting, then add a little pinch of cayenne pepper. How to Make Cheese Toast
  5. Place the toastie back on top. Leave it for just over 1 minute – wait for the cheese to bubble and the fat to spill out of it How to Make Cheese Toast
  6. Give the toastie a poke with a fish slice, and once it has a cheesy, doily-like crust on the bottom that moves as one, lift the toastie out of the pan and hold it on the fish slice for 30 seconds so the melted cheese hangs down, sets hard and forms an impressive cheese crown. How to Make Cheese Toast
  7. Flip it onto the other side and once golden, serve, remembering to let it cool for a couple of minutes before attempting to tuck in.

HOW WILL YOU FILL YOURS?

Don’t stop at just cheese. Pretty much anything goes, so create your own filling combos and have some fun.

Check out our suggestions below using some great British cheeses just for starters:

  • Montgomery’s cheddar, Ogleshield and chopped spring onions. Serve with a pickle.
  • Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire cheese, Wensleydale and apricot jam (or even orange marmalade). Serve with a pickle.
  • Keen’s Cheddar, Red Leicester and dry cured smoked ham. Serve with a baby spinach, watercress and apple salad.
  • Westcombe Cheddar and Gruyère, thinly sliced smoked ham and a lick of Dijon mustard. Serve with cornichons.
  • Coolea, Westcombe Cheddar, a tablespoon of chopped onions slow cooked in a splash of red wine vinegar and a slice of roast ham.
  • Keen’s Cheddar, sliced tomato, quick-pickled red onion (sliced red onion soaked in red wine vinegar, salt and a few thyme tips), sea salt & freshly ground black pepper.

FINISHING TOUCHES

The final debate is what do you want on the side? Tomato ketchup, brown sauce, a shake of Tabasco or hot sauce, mango chutney, chilli jam, or a mixture? They are all fine choices, and, dolloped onto a side plate like a painter’s palette, really come into their own.

Garlic cheese toast recipe – A quick cheese garlic bread toast under 20 mins. You can make this with any kind of bread you have. I went ahead using a whole meal loaf. This is a very simple garlic bread recipe and you can spice it up with own ideas like using chili flakes, crushed pepper or even with fresh herbs or dried herbs.

How to Make Cheese Toast

This can be made in oven and even on stove top. Sharing both of them here in the same post.

This garlic cheese toast is a favorite with my kids and I make this for the after school snacking. Sometimes I do make it for dinner along with tomato soup or vegetable soup.

This recipe uses minimum ingredients so I made it the basic and simple way. You can get innovative and use your own ideas like using green chilies for heat, veggies for nutrition etc.

Sometimes I use bell peppers and sometimes only the sweet corn.

Step-by-step photos

Preparation

1. Add soft butter and chopped garlic to a bowl. If using unsalted butter, you may add a bit, not too much since there is salt in cheese too. Preheat the oven to 190 C. If making on stove top, heat up the pan / tawa on a medium heat.

How to Make Cheese Toast

2. Whisk it up well to make a smooth garlic butter.

3. Smear the butter generously. Press the garlic chunks a bit into the bread to prevent them from falling off. If making on stove top, i suggest buttering both the sides. Put this in the oven and bake for 12 mins. If making on tawa, toast it on one side on a medium high heat.

How to Make Cheese Toast

4. While the bread toasts, grate your cheese. I avoid buying ready grated cheese since most of these have preservatives in E series added to it.

5. The garlic bread is done to golden. Bring the tray out of the oven.

Making garlic cheese toast on tawa – Lower the flame completely and keep the pan covered for a while or until the cheese begins to melt. To melt the cheese better you can also microwave for 6o to 90 seconds.

Some nights you just need dinner: NOW! Here are a few more of our favorite fast and easy dinner ideas for weeknights:

  • Classic Tuna Salad The very best tuna salad you’ll have! It’s an easy lunch or dinner on a lettuce wrap, sandwich, or with crackers. Also try: Tuna Salad with Egg.

Most toddlers’ first foods include pureed vegetables and fruit. I was eating shrimp even before I could form a full sentence, despite my mother’s concerns over allergies. Those early years where my father would feed me bites of seafood shaped my palate, and as I grew older weekly visits to his favorite seafood restaurant, Sizzler, were not uncommon.

Sizzler Family Restaurants

As I walked into my local Sizzler as an adult, I was surprised at how much the casual family restaurant had changed. Both the ambiance and the menu have been modernized, while the restaurant still retains those elements that keeps families coming back. Their Craft Salad Bar was the original and features an expansive selection of hot and cold foods, dessert, and seasonal dishes like their summer vegetable salad. U.S.D.A Choice steaks are cut fresh in-house daily and cooked over an open flame. Their seafood includes sustainable salmon and their soups are made daily from scratch. If you have ever been to a Sizzler restaurant, you know that the experience would not be complete without their world famous cheese toast.

Particularly popular among Californians, Sizzler uses 1,541,628 pounds of secret cheese toast spread to prepare the 12,333,024 slices of cheese toast it serves each year. Their Cheese Toast is so famous, it is served at Sizzler restaurant locations in Australia, China, Japan, Thailand and Puerto Rico.

How to Make Cheese Toast

[dropcap style=”font-size: 60px; color: #00adef;”] I[/dropcap]’ve always been a big fan of cheese on toast.

Over the years my preferred method has evolved.

From humble beginnings with processed sliced cheese under the grill that stayed square and freakishly plastic no matter how long you melted it.

I then developed a very complicated technique that involved mixing guryere, parmesan and creme fraiche. This was placed on top of the bread which was pan fried in butter to get the bottom lovely and crunchy. Then the whole thing popped under the grill until the cheese had melted.

Fiddly but good.

You’ll be happy to know that last week I had a breakthrough in the quest for the ultimate cheese on toast.

Are you ready for the secret?

Well it’s pretty basic, just melt it in the oven.

Now it may not sound that groundbreaking but trust me, after trying this cheese on toast you won’t be going back.

No more griller burning the crusts while you’re trying to get the cheese all golden and bubbling.

No more cold bottoms, hot tops.

We’re talking even cooking and perfectly melted cheesey goodness.

We’re talking a lightly toasted bottom with soft bready centers.

So easy and so good.

I’ve changed my thinking about the best cheese as well.

Gone is the complicated mix of guryere and parmesan.

Cheddar is now my cheese on toast go-to.

Particularly a lovely sharp Irish cheddar.

I have 2 recipes for you!

The first is for hardcore minimalists. Bread, butter, sliced cheese.

The second is a bit more decadent with a little mustard to compliment the cheesy flavours and a little mayo to give you the ultimate oozy, golden, bubbling cheese extravaganza.

Cheddar works brilliantly here but feel free to experiment with your favourite cheese combo.

2 slices rustic bread

1. Preheat oven to 250C (480F). Generously butter bread and place on a baking tray lined with foil or baking paper.

2. Bake for 3 minutes or until butter is melted.

3. Top with slices of cheese to completely cover the bread. Bake for another 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbling with golden brown patches.

The Ultimate Cheese on Toast

Again, the choice of cheese is in your court. The mayo makes it a bit moister so you could easily use hard cheese such as parmesan or manchengo.

For me right now, Irish cheddar is where it’s at.

Also lovely with a slice or 2 of smoked ham layered under the cheese.

For an even more satisfying experience replace the mayo with an egg yolk.

Serves: 2
Takes: 10 minutes
2 slices rustic bread
butter
2 handfuls grated cheese
1t wholegrain mustard
1T whole egg mayonnaise

1. Preheat oven to 250C (480F). Generously butter bread and place on a baking tray lined with foil or baking paper.

2. Bake for 3 minutes or until butter is melted.

3. Combine cheese, mustard and may. Completely cover the bread with the cheese mixture.

4. Bake for another 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbling with golden brown patches.

Air fryer grilled cheese sandwiches are life changing! We knew it would work, but didn’t realize how the air fryer makes perfect grilled cheese! Whether it’s for a quick snack for the kids or a seriously delicious lunch, these are fantastic. The bread toasts perfectly and the cheese melts fantastic. If you don’t want to use a lot fo butter, you don’t have to. Even with little butter or a light spray of olive oil, the bread toasts perfectly in the air fryer.

  • Lay slices of good melting cheese in center of slices of bread. Close the sandwich and spread softened butter on outside of bread. Or spray with light olive oil spray.
  • If your bread is really thin and light, it will fly off the sandwich from the circulating air in the air fryer. So you can use a toothpick to secure the sandwich together. But remember to remove the toothpicks before eating!
  • Lay sandwich in air fryer and cook. Fantastic grilled cheese sandwich in the air fryer that’s easy and delicious!

Best Cheeses for Grilled Cheese

Choose a good melting cheese to make it super delicious. We love using classic slices of american cheese because the flavor is great and melts super quick. Sharp cheddar cheese, swiss, tuyere and fontina are examples of good melting cheeses. If you’re slicing cheese off a block, make sure to slice the cheese thin. The thicker the cheese, the longer it takes to melt in the air fryer. So cook the sandwich on lower heat until the cheese melts, then cook it on the higher heat setting to toast the bread. We’ve tested the sandwich with butter and light spray of olive oil. Both work great with different flavor options!

Have you ever spent all your life calling something a name only to find out that, in fact, that’s not what it’s called at all? That’s pretty much what happened with this cheese on toast recipe. My Official Treat Taster made it for me for the first time years ago and told me it was a traditional Welsh Rarebit recipe. Luckily, I did a bit of research before publishing the recipe on Pink Recipe Box and found out that his version of melted cheese on toast isn’t anything like Welsh Rarebit in the slightest. However, it is amazing so I’ve still got to share it with you.

How to Make Cheese Toast

The only tricky step in this recipe is making sure that you’ve got the right egg-to-cheese ratio. You need it to be thick enough so that it will sit on top of the bread without running off, but thin enough so some of the liquid will soak into the bread. I suggest 2 eggs to 1/2 cup of grated cheese but, for the more visual foodies, this is the texture you’re looking for:

How to Make Cheese Toast

So much cheesy goodness! It’s certainly not the healthiest recipe, but you’ve got to use a lot of cheese if you want to make the best ever cheese toast, right? But on the plus side, cheese is full of calcium which strengthens our bones and teeth, so at least there’s that. How to Make Cheese Toast

Traditional Welsh Rarebit is made with beer, which I think is a bit weird to have for your first meal of the day. Unless it’s Cinco de Mayo or you’re on holiday. Saying that, I’ve just checked out Jamie Oliver’s Welsh Rarebit with Attitude Recipe and it doesn’t include any beer at all, although there is some creme fraiche. Confusing!

How to Make Cheese Toast

Anyway, back to my version of cheese on toast. It’s crunchy, soft, gooey and crispy – everything I’m looking for when it comes to cheese on toast. And since it’s made by combining the ingredients, slathering them on bread and leaving them to turn a beautiful golden brown in the oven, this recipe definitely wins in the cheese on toast vs grilled cheese war. There’s no messy buttering of bread on both sides and having to constantly stare at a pan in this recipe. Yay!

So whether this is a Welsh Rarebit recipe or just a cheese on toast in the oven recipe, it doesn’t really matter. What does matter is how quickly you can gather the ingredients, get into your kitchen and make cheese on toast!

Introduction: Cheese Egg Toast

How to Make Cheese Toast

How to Make Cheese Toast

How to Make Cheese Toast

I recently saw a recipe on Crazy Adventures in Parenting for a baked egg toast with cheese. I tried it and loved it, so I’ve made a tutorial for you guys along with a how-to video.

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients

First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Next gather up your ingredients:

  1. Sliced bread, a bit thicker than normal sandwhich bread.
  2. Cheese (i’m using a blend of four mexican cheeses, i believe)
  3. Room temperature eggs, the same number as the number of bread slices you have
  4. A small bit of butter or vegetable oil

That’s all you need! If your eggs aren’t at room temperature, put them in warm but not scalding water for about 5 minutes, or they won’t cook in time.

Step 2: Create Space for the Eggs

Place your bread on a half sheet pan or cookie sheet.

Using a spoon, create a square indentation in the middle of the bread (see picture). Use the tip of your spoon to create the edges, and the back of the spoon to push down the middle.

Next, using a brush, brush on some oil around the rim of the bread. This will create good adhesion for the cheese.

Step 3: Add Cheese and Eggs

Sprinkle the oiled rim of the bread with cheese. Try to be careful and not get cheese on the baking sheet, because it will definitely burn.

Finally, crack an egg into the middle of the bread slices.

Step 4: Bake

Place the cookie sheet into the middle of your 350 degree oven and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the egg is just barely runny.

In this particular recipe, I have found that the egg always comes out a bit runny. If you keep the toast on too long it will burn before the egg is completely firm. I like them runny, so this is perfect for me.

Step 5: Serve to a Greatful Audience

After removing from the oven, season and serve your lovely baked egg cheese toast. This is a very easy meal to make, and consider how good it tastes, I will be making it very often.

I like this variation on “eggs in a window” or whatever everyone else calls this dish. I like how you made an indentation in the bread instead of how I use a cookie cutter to make the “window”. I will give this a go. Thanks.

Want to know how to make cheese on toast? Here are our tips for creating this perfectly satisfying snack!

Cheese and toast are a match made in heaven – there’s something so irresistible about the combination of warm melted cheese and crunchy toast that puts it up there with our list of all-time favorite meals!

Better still, cheese on toast is very quick and easy to make – and there are a couple of different methods you can try.

How to Make Cheese Toast

Method 1 – How to make cheese on toast in the oven

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Butter a slice of bread and place it on a baking sheet.
  3. Bake for 2 to 3 minutes, until the butter has melted.
  4. Cover the bread with grated cheese and return to the oven. Cook until the cheese is golden and bubbly.

How to Make Cheese Toast

Method 2 – How to make cheese on toast using the broiler

  1. Preheat the broiler.
  2. Place the slice of bread on a baking sheet and toast under the broiler until golden.
  3. Turn the bread over and top with grated cheese.
  4. Return to the broiler and cook until the cheese is bubbling and golden.

How to Make Cheese Toast

Tips for making the ultimate cheese on toast

  1. Choose a nice, rustic loaf or a seeded bread for the very best crunch and flavor.
  2. Pick a cheese that melts well and has lots of flavor. A nice, sharp cheddar is ideal.
  3. Use grated cheese instead of sliced – it tends to melt more quickly and evenly.
  4. Try to resist the urge to use those convenient little slices of processed cheese. They never seem to melt properly and often end up blackened instead of golden!
  5. Shake a good dash of Worcestershire sauce over the cheese before melting. It adds an incredible pop of flavour.
  6. Try mixing chopped scallions with the grated cheese to create cheese ‘n onion on toast. Yum!
  7. Mix the butter with minced garlic before spreading, for a delicious cheesy garlic bread.
  8. Make cheese on toast into more of a meal by adding a couple of slices of cooked meat before the grated cheese. Ham is traditional, but chorizo tastes amazing!

How to Make Cheese Toast

What’s the difference between cheese on toast and a grilled cheese sandwich?

Whilst both dishes are a comforting mix of gooey cheese and crunchy toast, a grilled cheese sandwich is made up of melted cheese sandwiched between 2 slices of toast (unlike cheese on toast, which is more like an ‘open’ sandwich).

Why not try our Toaster Oven Grilled Cheese Sandwich recipe? It’s ready in minutes and gives perfect results!

How to Make Cheese Toast

How to make healthier cheese on toast

If you’re feeling guilty about indulging in your favorite gooey treat, here are a few ways to make it a little healthier!

  1. Use whole grain bread instead of white.
  2. Pick a stronger tasting cheese – that way, you won’t need to use as much.
  3. Combine the cheese with other ingredients (such as those suggested above). Again, you’ll need less cheese, but still have loads of flavor.
  4. Skip the butter, or replace it with a low-fat alternative (reduced fat mayo works well!).

Now you know how to make perfect cheese on toast, why not try an exotic variation with our Welsh Rarebit recipe?

How to Make Cheese Toast

Forever ago, when I was at art college, the school cafeteria sold thick slabs of cheese toast for a dollar. It was about all I could afford, which was convenient because it was also what I loved the most. Open faced grilled cheese. It reminded me of my mom’s tuna melts, minus the tuna, and my grandma’s hot dog melts on hamburger buns that would go all crackly in the oven. Cheese toast is perhaps as comforting as it’s possible to get. It doesn’t seem like the sort of thing you need a recipe for – and yet it’s so much more than just cheese on toast.

Hy’s steakhouses are known for their old-school cheese toast. Again, it’s about all I can afford – and also mostly what I want. It arrives in linen-lined silver baskets and tastes the same wherever you go – they’ve had their formula since 1955, which is evident in the ingredient list: soft butter, grated cheese, Worcestershire. They add a pinch of white pepper, too.

How to Make Cheese Toast

Really, the secret is in the butter-cheese mix. The original recipe calls for Grana Padano, Swiss and orange cheddar; I used Parm, aged Gouda and old orange cheddar. It seems to me the sort of thing you could use up those cheese ends in the fridge for – with a glug (not too much) of Worcestershire for nostalgia’s sake. And to make a perfect pairing with a spicy Caesar. You’ll need some nice, slightly squidgy white bread too – I had a couple of Julia Child’s sandwich loaves on my countertop, which is I think why inspiration struck.

How to Make Cheese Toast

And because it’s fast – you could do it in the toaster oven, one at a time, and keep the cheese mixture in the fridge for future toasts – the timing is perfect if you want to heat up a pot of tomato soup on the stove. This is my plan at the first opportunity that arises.
