If you’re having trouble comfortably reading text that is either too small or too big on a website in Google Chrome, there’s a quick way to change text size without diving into Settings. Here’s how.

The Answer Is Zoom

Chrome includes a feature called Zoom that allows you to quickly make text and images bigger or smaller on any website. You can zoom a web page from anywhere between 25% and 500% of its usual size.

Even better, when you navigate away from a page, Chrome will remember your zoom level for that website when you come back to it. To see if a page is already zoomed or not when you visit it, look for a tiny magnifying glass icon in the far right side of the address bar.

Once you’ve opened Chrome on the platform of your choice, there are three ways to control Zoom. We’ll go over them one by one.

Zoom Method 1: Mouse Maneuvers

On a Windows, Linux, or Chromebook machine, hold down the Ctrl key and rotate the scroll wheel on your mouse. Depending on which direction you spin the wheel, the text will become larger or smaller.

This method does not work on Macs. Instead, you can use pinch-to-zoom gestures on a Mac trackpad or double-tap to zoom in on a touch-sensitive mouse.

Zoom Method 2: Menu Option

The second zoom method uses a menu. Click the vertical ellipses button (three dots aligned vertically) in the upper-right corner of any Chrome window. In the menu that pops up, look for the “Zoom” section. Click the “+” or “-” buttons in the Zoom section to make the website appear larger or smaller.

Zoom Method 3: Keyboard Shortcuts

You can also Zoom in and out on a page in Chrome using two simple keyboard shortcuts.

  • On Windows, Linux, or Chromebook: Use Ctrl++ (Ctrl+Plus) to zoom in and Ctrl+- (Ctrl+Minus) to zoom out.
  • On Mac: Use Command++ (Command+Plus) to zoom in and Command+- (Command+Minus) to zoom out.

How to Reset Zoom Level in Chrome

If you’ve zoomed too far in or out, it’s easy to reset the page back to the default size. One way is to use any of the zoom methods listed above but set the zoom level to 100%.

Another way to reset back to default size is to click on the tiny magnifying glass icon on the far right side of the address bar. (This will only appear if you are zoomed to a level other than 100%.) In the small pop-up that appears, click the “Reset” button.

After that, everything will be back to normal. If you ever need to zoom again, you’ll know exactly how to do it.

If you often have trouble comfortably reading websites in Google Chrome due to text that is too large or too small, it’s easy to change the default font size (and font face) for every page on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chromebooks. Here’s how.

An Alternative Solution: Zoom Mode

Before we set default font sizes, it’s worth noting that Chrome also includes a feature called Zoom that allows you to quickly change both the size of images and text using the menu or keyboard shortcuts. Unlike Zoom mode, changing the default font size in Chrome will only change text size and will not affect the size of images on the page.

How to Change Chrome’s Default Font Size

If you’d still like to change the default font size in Chrome, we’ll have dig into Settings. First, open Chrome. In the upper-right corner of any window, click the “ellipses” button (three vertical dots). In the menu that appears, click “Settings.”

In Settings, click the “Appearance” option in the sidebar or scroll down until you see the “Appearance” section of the Settings page. Next, locate the option called “Font Size.”

Click the “Font Size” drop-down menu, and you will see five options pop up: “Very Small,” “Small,” “Medium,” “Large,” and “Very Large.”

“Medium” is the default size, so if you’d like all fonts to be larger, select “Large” or “Very Large.” Likewise, if you’d like text on websites to be smaller than the default, select the “Small” or “Very Small” options.

After that, exit Settings. The change will apply to all future websites you visit. You can always revisit Settings if you change your mind about which font size is ideal for you.

How to Finely Tune Font Size in Google Chrome

If you’re not satisfied with Chrome’s five basic font size options and would like more granular control, visit Settings > Appearance in Chrome and click “Customize fonts.”

On the Customize fonts screen, you can select a font by point size (from 9 all the way to 72, with 16 pt being the default) using a slider. As you move the slider, the point size will display just above it.

You can also set a minimum font size, which ensures that websites never display fonts that are too small for you to read.

And if you’d like, you can even change the actual font faces you use on this same Settings page.

Experiment with the settings and find what is most comfortable for you. Feel free to switch back and forth between the Settings tab and other website tabs to test. Once you’ve found what you like, close Settings, and you’re set. Happy browsing!

  • Serif font: this type of font has little feet at the top and the bottom of the letters, and works on the visited website that states to use a Serif font.
  • Sans-serif font: this type is different from the above two types — it has no feet at the top and bottom of the letters, and applies to the opened website that states to adopt a Sans-serif font.
  • Fixed-width font: in this type, all the letters, numbers, and special characters have the same width. If the website you access states to use a fixed-width font, Google Chrome will show the font you select here.

Tiny text and too-small images make it difficult to view a Web page. If you use Google Chrome as your browser, you can increase the size of a Web page with the Zoom tool. Chrome enables you to zoom in on just one page or enlarge the content on every page you visit. The browser also features several extra-large font sizes that you might find helpful when text is hard to read.

Enlarge Current Page

Launch Chrome and go to the Web page that you want to enlarge.

Click the “Menu” button. Find “Zoom” in the list of menu options.

Click the “+” next to Zoom to enlarge the page or the “-” button make it smaller. Alternatively, press “Ctrl” and “+” to enlarge the screen or “Ctrl” and “-” to make it smaller.

Click the “Full Screen” button next to Zoom to enter full-screen mode. You can also enable full-screen mode by pressing “F11.”

Enlarge All Pages

Launch Chrome and click the “Menu” button.

Click “Setting” and then click “Show Advanced Settings” near the bottom of the window.

Scroll down to the Web Content section. Click the “Page Zoom” drop-down menu and select a size from 25 percent to 500 percent zoom. The default setting is 100 percent zoom.

Click the “Font Size” drop-down menu and choose a size from “Very Small” to “Very Large.” Close the window to save your changes.

Computer displays are growing bigger all the time, and that means they display graphics at much higher resolutions than old CRT monitors did. Although you can view more things on screen in higher definition, a larger display also makes everything look smaller, and it may even make text too hard to read.

Luckily, you can increase the size of text through software, without having to sacrifice that high-definition resolution. You have a few ways to accomplish this, but here are the easiest methods in several popular Web browsers and operating systems.

Windows 7

1. Click Start. Type Font Size in the search box, and press Enter.

2. In the Display window that appears, choose the Medium font size (125 percent of the default size) or the Larger font size (150 percent of the default size). If you don’t like those settings, you can fine-tune the text size to your liking by selecting the Set custom text size (DPI) option.

Use the Display control panel in Windows to adjust the appearance of text.

3. Click the Apply button. Windows will warn that the changes will not go into effect until you log off and then log back in to the system. Click Log Off Now to apply your changes.

Mac OS X

1. In OS X version 10.7 or later, open the Apple menu and select System Preferences.

2. In the System Preferences menu, select Universal Access.

3. Under the Seeing tab, locate the Zoom section and select On to enable zoom.

4. Hold down Command-Alt on your keyboard, and then tap the plus-sign (+) key to make the screen view larger, or tap the minus-sign/hyphen () key to make the screen view smaller. You can continue pressing either of these two keys until you reach a comfortable zoom level.

Google Chrome

1. Update to the latest version of the Google Chrome browser. Next, click the wrench icon in the upper-right corner of the Chrome window, and select Options.

2. In the navigation page, select Under the Hood.

3. In the Web Content section, click the Font Size drop-down menu. You can choose between multiple sizes of text ranging from Very Small to Very Large, and the changes will take effect immediately.

Mozilla Firefox

1. Update to the latest version of Firefox. Open a browser window, and then press the Alt key to bring up the File menu.

Select Zoom Text Only from the Firefox Zoom menu.

2. Click the View menu, then Zoom, then Zoom Text Only.

3. Hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, and then press the plus (+) key to make on-screen text larger or the minus/hyphen () key to make on-screen text smaller. You can continue to press either of the two keys to adjust the text size to your liking.

Internet Explorer

1. Open an Internet Explorer window and select the Gear icon in the upper-right corner. From there, select Zoom.

2. In the Zoom menu, choose a predefined zoom size (the default is 100 percent) ranging from 50 percent to 400 percent. If you’d prefer to fine-tune the size yourself, you can click the Custom option and specify your own percentage.

Choose a size from the list, or specify your own.

Remember, for optimal browsing and posture, adjust the size of on-screen text so that it permits you to read comfortably at a distance of 3 to 5 feet.

To make text bigger, press two keys at the same time:

  • Ctrland+ keys in Windows, Linux, and Chrome OS

Change Text Size with Zoom

Most web browsers let you increase and decrease the size of text, images, and other web page content with “zoom” features. Some browsers let you choose to zoom only the text size.

To change the zoom in most browsers, press the following two keys at the same time:

  • In Windows, Linux, and Chrome OS:
    • To zoom bigger: “Ctrl” and “+” keys
    • To zoom smaller: “Ctrl” and “-” keys
  • Mac OS:
    • To zoom bigger: “⌘” and “+” keys
    • To zoom smaller: “⌘” and “-” keys

Browsers provide specific guidance on different ways to change the page zoom or text-only zoom:

Other Text and Color Changes

Some browsers provide functionality to set different aspects of font and color in the default view.

Other text and color settings are available in Reader View.

Reader View

Most browsers offer a “Reader View” or “Reading View” that shows just the main content; it gets rid of navigation, ads, etc. Some browsers let you set the text font, text size, text color, background color, and line spacing in Reader View.

Advanced Options

There are many browser extensions and add-ons that provide additional control over how the browser displays text and other content.

While most browsers no long support user style sheets, extensions provide similar advanced user control. For example, the Stylus extension is available for several major browsers.

More Information

Why doesn’t this work with some other websites?

The browser settings on this page should work when websites and browsers meet accessibility guidelines and are designed for accessibility, flexibility, and user control. However:

  • some websites are designed to defeat user’s browser settings
  • some browsers do not provide as much user control

Text resizing, browser zoom, and other user choices may not work consistently on websites that do not meet accessibility guidelines.

Should all websites include instructions like this?

It’s up to the website owner. It’s not an accessibility requirement that websites include information on changing text sizes and colors like this page. We chose to include this information to help people who want to know how to change their browser settings.

Should websites provide a widget to change text, color, etc.

Last week I ditched Microsoft’s word-processing software Word and made a jump to Google Docs. While the overall transition has been smooth and glitch-free, one thing immediately caught my attention. Google Docs default Title, Header, and Normal text size vary from what I prefer and use in Word. The spacing is set at 1.15, which is a bit higher than my liking. Thankfully, it’s quite easy to change the default font and size in Google Docs.

You can always use the menu bar to change the font size, type, and paragraph spacing. The problem is, when you try to create a new document from scratch, Google Docs will revert to the default settings. That can be quite frustrating while working on new documents or assignments.

In such cases, you need to change the default font settings for Title, Header, and Normal Text. Sadly, it’s not as straightforward as other rivals. You can’t just go into Google Docs Settings and change the default font type and size.

In this post, we will guide you through the trick to change the default font size for Header, Title, and Text. We will also mention a way to revert to the default Google Docs settings, if you change your mind. Let’s get started.

Change Default Title Font Type and Size in Google Docs

The default Title type and size in Google Docs is set at Arial, 26. While I am fine with the title type font, but the 26 font size looks rather big and tacky. Follow the steps to make changes.

Step 1: Open Google Docs, either open a document or create a new one.

Step 2: Write the title and change the font size to your preference.

Step 3: Select the title and highlight text.

Step 4: Click on the Format tab located on the toolbar.

Step 5: Navigate to Paragraph Styles > Title > select Update Title to match.

Step 6: Move to the menu bar. Open Format > Paragraph styles > Options > Save as my default style.

That’s it. From now on, Google Docs will use the selected Title font type and size as default.

Change Default Heading Font Type and Size in Google Docs

During my writeup, I mostly use Heading 2 for sub-title. By default, the Heading 2 font is set at 16, which is too small for my liking. If you want to change Heading fonts, then go through the steps below.

Step 1: Open Google Docs, compose a new document and select Heading 2 from the menu bar.

Step 2: Start typing a few words in Heading and select them.

Step 3: Click on the Format tab located on the toolbar.

Step 4: Navigate to Paragraph Styles > Heading 2 > select Update ‘Heading 2’ to match.

Step 5: Move to the menu bar. Open Format > Paragraph styles > Options > Save as my default style.

Using the same trick above, you can change the default font type and size for Heading 1/2/3/4/5/6 in Google Docs.

How to Change Default Text Font Type, Size, and Spacing in Google Docs

This was my biggest issue with Google Docs. The default text is too small for my preference, and the 1.15 spacing is a bit wider for me. I prefer normal text size at 16 and paragraph spacing at 1. Follow the step-by-step instructions to make changes.

Step 1: Open Google Docs, create a new document, and start typing a few sentences with normal text.

Step 2: Select the whole paragraph from start to end and then change the toolbar’s font type and size.

Step 3: Tap on the spacing menu and select Single instead of 1.15.

Step 4: Click on the Format tab located on the toolbar.

Step 5: Navigate to Paragraph Styles > Normal Text > select Update ‘Normal Text’ to match.

Step 6: Move to the menu bar. Open Format > Paragraph styles > Options > Save as my default style.

From now on, whenever you compose a document in Google Docs, the system will use the set Title, Heading, and Normal Text font type and size in the app. It will also resolve the spacing issue for you.

Revert to Default Google Docs Style Settings

By now, you have made the changes to the default Title, Heading, and Normal Text on Google Docs. You have also changed the spacing to your preference. If you didn’t like the new change by any chance, you could easily go back to Google Docs way in the software.

Following the steps below, you can easily go back to the default Google Docs style settings.

Step 1: Open Google Docs and open a new document.

Step 2: By now, the default font style and size are set at your preference.

Step 3: Click on Format in the menu bar.

Step 4: Navigate to Paragraph styles > Options > Reset styles.

Now, Google Docs will use the default Title, Heading, and Normal Text font type and size. The spacing too will revert to 1.15.

Customize Google Docs

Using the tricks above, you can easily make changes in default font type and size in Google Docs. You can also change title/headings colors and use the highlighter to your preference. Which font type and size you use in Google Docs? Share your preference in the comments section below.

Some browsers provide the functionality to set different aspects of font and colour in the default view.

Other text and colour settings are available in Reader View.

Reader View

Most browsers offer a “Reader View” or “Reading View” that shows just the main content; it gets rid of navigation, ads, etc. Some browsers let you set the text font, text size, text colour, background colour, and line spacing in Reader View.

Advanced Options

There are many browser extensions and add-ons that provide additional control over how the browser displays text and other content.

While most browsers no long support user style sheets, extensions provide similar advanced user control. For example, the Stylus extension is available for several major browsers.

Gmail comes with a default font size and font – it’s the same every time you compose an email. However, there are times when you might want to change those.

Maybe you want to add some formatting to an email to make it more readable or scannable for the recipient, or perhaps you just want your email to look a little snazzier.

There are several non-default font and font size options in Gmail. To use them, you can either change your settings to swap the default versions out, or you can use the formatting bar as you type your emails.

Changing the Default Settings

Step 1. Make sure that you’re logged into Gmail and head up to the Gear icon. You can find this in the top right-hand corner.

Step 2. Click All settings.

Step 3. From there, select the General tab.

Step 4. Find the Default text style section.

Step 5. If you click the first dropdown, you can change the default font that Gmail will use.

Step 6. You then need to click the second dropdown. This will allow you to change the size of the font.

Step 7. Black is the default text color, but if you want to change that, you can do so in the third dropdown menu.

Step 8. If you want to change the font and font size settings, you can do this using the fourth dropdown menu.

Step 9. Click Save Changes, and you’re done.

Using the Formatting Bar

When you have set your defaults, you can still change the font size and font in the formatting bar. This allows you to create better-looking emails.

Step 1. Make sure that you’re logged into your Gmail account and click Compose.

Step 2. Compose your email as you usually would.

Step 3. Highlight the part of the message that you want to change the font and font size of.

On the Formatting bar, simply click the first of the dropdown menus. This will allow you to change the font.

Step 4. To change the font size, simply go to the next dropdown and click the text’s size.

Step 5. If desired, you can also add underlining, bold text, and italic text.

Step 6. When you’re happy with your formatting, simply click Send.

Best Practices for Font Sizes and Font Styles

Set the size of your font based on your content.

If you’re using a lot of paragraphs, you should probably go with something that looks like “normal” text rather than trying to use all caps or some other fancy font style.

Use a consistent font throughout your site.

Although it’s tempting to use a fancy typeface for headings and body text (like this one), it’s better to stick with something that looks nice but isn’t too distracting from the rest of the site.

If you’re going for something more unique, consider using an outline or italic instead of bold or regular weight text.

Pay attention to line length and spacing (or lack thereof).

Line length is another factor that can make your content look much nicer — and easier to read — than if you have long lines of text without proper spacing between them.

In addition, if you have a lot of long passages of text on one page, it can be difficult for users to navigate your site without losing their place in the document — so make sure that everything is laid out coherently!

Always view your Gmail emails on a different device

You’ve probably heard this advice before: always view your email on another device. This is because your settings in Gmail can affect how others see your messages.

For instance, if you have a large body font size but an email has been sent from a phone with smaller text, it will appear small and hard to read.

It’s also important to remember that not every device will display emails in the same size or font style as another device.

If you’re sending out business messages or important correspondence, consider using different settings for mobile vs. desktop vs. tablet vs. laptop users so everyone receives information correctly.

That’s it! Changing fonts and font sizes is super simple and is a great way to make your emails easier to read and look more professional.

This article explains how to use full-screen mode on Google Chrome for Windows and macOS.

Enable and Disable Chrome Full-Screen Mode in macOS

For Chrome on macOS, in the upper-left corner of Chrome, select the green circle to go to full-screen mode, and select it again to return to the full-size screen.

There are two other options to activate full-screen mode:

  • From the menu bar, select View >Enter Full Screen.
  • Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Command+F.

To exit full-screen mode, repeat this process.

Enable and Disable Full-Screen Mode in Chrome for Windows

The quickest way to get Chrome in full-screen mode in Windows is to press F11 on the keyboard. The other way is through the Chrome menu:

In the upper-right corner of Chrome, select the menu (three-dot) icon.

In the Zoom section, select the square icon on the right.

To return to the standard view, press F11 or hover near the top of the screen and select the X button that appears.

What Is Chrome Full-Screen Mode?

Google Chrome full-screen mode hides distractions on your desktop, including the bookmarks bar, menu buttons, open tabs, and the operating system clock and taskbar. When you use full-screen mode, Chrome occupies all the space on the screen.

How to Zoom In and Out in Chrome

Full-screen mode displays more of the page, but it doesn’t make the text larger. To make text larger, use the Zoom setting.

In the upper-right corner of Chrome, select the menu (three-dot) icon.

Go to Zoom and select + to enlarge the page contents or select to reduce the size.

Alternatively, use keyboard shortcuts to modify the size of the page contents. Hold down the Ctrl key (or the Command key on a Mac) and press the plus or minus keys on the keyboard to zoom in and out, respectively.

2 Other Methods

In Internet Explorer, click the gear icon, select “Zoom” and then click “Zoom In” repeatedly until the text is the size you need or select a zoom percentage above 100 percent. In Firefox, locate the “+” and “-” buttons between the address bar and search field, and then click “+” repeatedly to zoom in. In Chrome, click the three bar icon and click the “+” button in the Zoom section.

3 Warnings

The Zoom Controls are not a default option in Firefox. If you don’t see the buttons, right-click above the address bar and select “Customize” to open the Customize Toolbar window. Click and drag the “Zoom Controls” icon up to the space between the address bar and search field.
