Indeed, one of the main talking points about Windows 11 is the redesigned taskbar, an element that has been written from scratch in the modern design language.

Thus, some features are missing in the Windows 11 taskbar compared to Windows 10, like drag and drop items between applications, no clock on the second display, smaller design, etc.

Users have been complaining about these features not being there ever since the new OS was born, so Microsoft decided to make some of these requests a reality.

How do I display the taskbar clock on all monitors?

Via an Insider build released in the Dev Channel, some simple yet important changes were made by Redmond officials.

For example, the tech giant will add the ability to further customize the Start menu by controlling how much of it will display pins or recommendations.

Until now, if you used multiple monitors on your Windows 11 setup, the date and time would only be displayed on the main one.

And seeing how this feature was removed, we had to use third-party software such as ElevenClock to make this possible again.

For a small number of Insiders, however, this has become possible again, with build 22509.

Although not exactly clear at this moment, the process of enabling the clock to be displayed on the taskbar of a second or even a third monitor will not be a hard one, rest assured.

Display the clock on all monitors using ElevenClock

For the time being, ElevenClock is the best chance to show time on all monitors on Windows 11, as the functionality still hasn’t found its way to the Stable channel.

One of the new additions to Windows 10 is a revamped system tray clock. However, you can restore the former clock from previous Windows platforms. Try out this registry trick to switch back to the original clock.

Double clicking the clock on the right of the taskbar expands it as in the shot below. The round clock is no longer there, and is instead replaced by a digital alternative. Furthermore, the new one has an expanded calendar and theme color.

To revert back to the clock from previous Windows platforms, open the Registry Editor. Press the Win key + R to open Run, and enter regedit in the text box. Press the OK button there to open the editor’s window below.

Then browse to the following registry key on the left of the window: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell. When you’ve selected that key, you should right-click an empty area on the right of the window to open the context menu in the shot below.

Select DWORD (32-bit) Value from that menu. Then enter UseWin32TrayClockExperience as the title for the DWORD value. Double-click that DWORD to open the window below.

Now enter 1 in the Value data text box. Press OK to close the Edit DWORD(32-bit) Value window. Double-click your system tray clock to open it as shown below.

Now you have restored the former Windows system tray clock. It’s a round analogue clock alternative with a smaller calendar. Note that you can always switch back to the Windows 10 clock by entering 0 in the Value data text box.

The default setting for displaying the time on a Microsoft Windows 10 desktop is restricted to hours and minutes. For most users, that default is perfectly acceptable, but others might like the option of displaying seconds in the desktop system tray of their taskbars.

There is no optional configuration that will allow seconds to display as default in Windows 10. Your PC is tracking seconds, of course, but there is no easy conventional way, no configuration setting, to add it to the system tray. However, we can edit the Windows 10 Registry File to make it possible.

Disclaimer: Editing the Windows Registry file is a serious undertaking. A corrupted Windows Registry file could render your computer inoperable, requiring a reinstallation of the Windows 10 operating system and potential loss of data. Back up the Windows 10 Registry file and create a valid restore point before you proceed.

How to show seconds in the Windows 10 system clock

As you can see in Figure A, Windows 10 is tracking seconds, but you have to click or tap the time/date section of the taskbar system tray to open the notification sidebar that displays it.

To change the default and display seconds in the system tray of the Windows 10 taskbar, we will have to edit the Windows Registry File. Type “regedit” into the search box on your taskbar and select Registry Editor from the search results. Navigate to this key, as shown in Figure B:

We are going to create a new key in the Advanced folder. Right-click the Advanced folder and select New | DWORD (32-bit) Value. Give the new key this name, as shown in Figure C, and press Enter.

Double-click the new key you just created (ShowSecondsInSystemClock) and change the Value data to 1, as shown in Figure D.

Click OK to confirm your input. Exit out of the Registry Editor. To complete the process, you will have to restart your PC.

After the restart, the time display in the Windows 10 system tray on the taskbar, shown in Figure E, will include seconds as well as minutes and hours.

To go back to just displaying hours and minutes, open the Registry Editor and navigate to the same folder and key. Change the Value data of the ShowSecondsInSystemClock to 0 (zero) and restart your PC.

If you’re waiting for a specific hour it can be useful to have a clock that also shows seconds. Since the Taskbar clock is the most convenient way to check the time while in front of your Windows 10 computer, it would be nice if it would also show seconds. While this is not a feature available by default, you can make the Taskbar Clock show seconds in Windows 10.

This is possible starting with Windows 10 build 14393 and for older Windows 10 builds you would need to use third-party apps to make the Taskbar Clock display seconds.

How to make the Taskbar Clock show seconds in Windows 10

If your computer is running Windows 10 build 14393, you don’t need an app to make the Taskbar Clock display seconds. In fact, you just need to perform a simple Registry tweak.

To begin with, open the Registry Editor. To do this, simply right-click the Start button, select Run from the context menu, type in ‘regedit’ without the quote marks and hit the OK button.

Once the Registry Editor opens, navigate to the Registry key below:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Now, you will need to create a new 32-bit DWORD value. To do this, right click on the Advanced folder and select New -> DWORD (32-bit) value. Name it ShowSecondsInSystemClock and set its value data to 1.

To apply the changes log out and then log back into your user account or restart Explorer.

From then on, you should be seeing seconds in the Taskbar clock like in the image below:

On any modern version of Windows, Microsoft restricts the taskbar clock to hours and minutes. This is perfect for most users, but some people might want to display seconds in the taskbar of their operating system.

Windows 10’s lets you display seconds on the taskbar if you’re willing to use a registry hack to enable the hidden feature.

Unlike Windows 10, Windows 11 doesn’t support the optional registry key to display seconds on the taskbar. In a Feedback Hub post, Microsoft quietly explained that it is no longer possible to edit the Registry file to enable a clock with seconds. The company has removed the feature entirely and one of the reasons could be performance issues.

“Please note, at this time showing the seconds in the flyout is not supported, however your interest in this has been shared with the team for future consideration,” Microsoft noted in a Feedback Hub post.

Notably, this wasn’t the case in the ’90s. Early versions of the taskbar supported seconds, but the feature was made optional in the stable release as it resulted in performance issues for everyone. The performance impact was noticeable because the systems had only 4MB of RAM, but that’s no longer the as most systems now have more than 8GB of memory.

So why not bring back the taskbar clock with seconds support? The reason is still performance, according to a new post on Microsoft’s dev blog.

While system memory is no longer the main concern as all devices now have a lot more than 4MB of memory, the frequent updates required for displaying seconds on the taskbar can still make your device slower than usual.

Let’s consider a configuration with multi-user support, like Terminal servers. In servers with multi-user support, the system will try to update the taskbar clock once a second for each user that signs in have their own taskbar clock. This means the server would page a hundred stacks to paint a hundred taskbar clocks.

For this particular reason, server admins usually disable ‘caret blinking’ to reduce CPU usage as caret blinking across a hundred users will contribute to CPU usage. In fact, many server administrators disable the taskbar clock entirely to reduce the load on processing power.

The same theory also applies to systems that aren’t Terminal Servers. This includes your personal computer.

It’s a bad thing for performance since it basically means Windows will need to spend extra time on updating clocks and the “periodic activity” will prevent the CPU from entering a low-power state, thus affecting the overall performance.

“Any periodic activity with a rate faster than one minute incurs the scrutiny of the Windows performance team because periodic activity prevents the CPU from entering a low-power state,” Microsoft noted.

The company has been trying to reduce periodic activities and that’s why it is good for performance or battery backup if periodic times have a minimum period of one minute.

Of course, it goes without saying that it was not a good idea to disable the optional registry hack that enabled seconds on the taskbar. Based on the statement posted in Feedback Hub, it looks like the company is not planning to restore the registry hack, at least for now.

Microsoft is not planning to restore some missing taskbar features

During an AMA posted on YouTube, members of Windows Insiders and the developer team confirmed that restoring some taskbar features isn’t currently a priority.

Microsoft official confirmed that it won’t restore features like the movable taskbar because a small number of users have the taskbar on top, right or left. We’re not sure about the data cited by the official because one of the most requested features in Feedback Hub is a movable taskbar.

As per the Feedback Hub, a movable taskbar is one of the most requested features with up to 6,000 upvotes.

Microsoft didn’t say that it would never restore missing features in the OS, but features like movable taskbar aren’t a priority as the company is focusing on capabilities like drag and drop, tablet experience, etc.

1. Some tips to customize Taskbar on Windows 10 effectively

Start by opening the Registry Editor. Type regedit into the Start menu and launch the utility. Accept the administrator’s prompt and you will access the Registry. As usual, be careful when staying here because only one wrong operation can lead to system crashes.

Unlock Advanced with this link:

Right-click on the Advanced folder in the left bar. Select New> DWORD (32-bit Value) and name it.

Next, double-click this value in the right panel. In the Value data field, set the value to 1 . Click OK to save the changes, then close the Registry Editor. After logging out and logging back into the account, you will see the number of seconds displayed on the clock.

If you don’t want to display the number of seconds, go back to the Registry, change the value to 0 or delete it.

It all comes down to a simple registry tweak

Even though Windows 10 introduces some customization settings for the desktop, there’s no doubt that power users expected even more, especially because they’re still not allowed to configure the looks of certain OS parts, such as the taskbar clock for instance.

And while the appearance of the taskbar clock can’t be customized, users can actually change the format and the displayed info, though options are limited here as well and seconds cannot be shown.

Fortunately, there’s a very easy way to display seconds in the taskbar clock and it all comes down to a simple registry tweak that we’re going to detail today.

Before anything else, make sure that you are logged in with an administrator account, as it’s needed to make changes to the Windows registry. If this is the case, then you’re good to go – standard accounts can’t make any modifications and the trick below doesn’t work.

So log in with your administrator account in Windows 10 and launch the Registry Editor by clicking the Start menu and typing regedit. Hit Enter to have the Windows Registry Editor launch. Once you are there, navigate to the following path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced In the Advanced folder, right-click in an empty space in the right panel and go to New > DWORD (32-bit) Value to create a new entry. Use the following name for this new entry: ShowSecondsInSystemClock Once it’s created, double-click it to change its value and input value 1. Close the Registry Editor and sign out of your user account or simply restart the explorer process to see the changes (you can also press Ctrl + Shift + right-click the taskbar to see an option to exit Explorer).

Once you log back in, you should see seconds displayed in the clock. If you want to revert to original settings, simply change the value of the newly-created item to 0 or delete it altogether.

This is a small trick, but one you might find useful. By default, Windows 10’s taskbar clock shows only the hour and minutes. There’s no built-in option to show the seconds too, which feels like an unnecessary omission. Read on to learn how to force the seconds to show up on your taskbar.

Since this option isn’t present in the Windows interface, you’ll need to manually edit the registry to achieve the result. Our usual warning applies: take care when using the Registry Editor, as incorrect values could cause internal issues for Windows.

To get started, open the Registry Editor by searching for “regedit” in the Start menu. Using the address bar at the top of the window, or the left-side tree view, navigate to the following key:

In the registry editor’s main pane, you should see a set of configuration keys and values. Right-click the pane’s background and choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name the key “ShowSecondsInSystemClock”.

Next, double click the key you just created. In the value editor box which appears, change the value to “1” and press “OK”.

Finally, logout of Windows and sign back in to see the changes. If you don’t want to logout, you can restart “explorer.exe” instead using the Task Manager.

That’s it. It’s a simple change, but one which might make Windows slightly more accommodating to your time display preferences.

Windows’ lack of a built-in “show seconds” option dates all the way back to Windows 95’s release. In 2003, the company explained that Windows 95 had to run on computers with 4MB of RAM. Updating the taskbar clock display every second would have resulted in significantly higher memory usage, due to the way in which the taskbar is rendered. Although this is no longer such a consideration today, Windows 10 still ships with just the hours and minutes visible on the taskbar.

Then we specify All in the export range, give it a name, select the .reg format and click “Save”.

Next, we navigate to the following location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER / SOFTWARE / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Explorer / Advanced

Now, we need to check if the ShowSecondsInSystemClock value exists under the Advanced key, but since it usually doesn’t exist, we need to create it.

To do this we are going to right-click on the right panel and select the New > 32-bit DWORD Value option. Once created, we name it ShowSecondsInSystemClock and assign it the value 1 in hexadecimal to activate said value.

Once this is done, we can now close the system registry, but according to what we can verify, the Windows 10 clock is still displayed in the HH:mm format without the seconds.

In order for the changes made in the registry to take effect and we can start seeing the clock in HH:mm:ss format, we will have to restart the computer . Once the system boots again, we will check how the clock format has changed in the taskbar and the seconds are shown.

If at any time we want to revert the change, we just have to access the same path within the Registry and delete the key created.

Does it work on Windows 11?

Windows 11 brings with it a big design change that modifies the appearance of the Start menu, the taskbar, the desktop, among other elements. This also includes the way the operating system displays the system clock on the taskbar.

In Windows 10, as we have seen, we can apply a registry modification to allow the seconds to be displayed in the system clock of the taskbar. However , in Windows 11 this modification is no longer applicable and there is, at the moment, no other system modification or registry method that allows us to display seconds on the clock.

And it is that Microsoft decided to completely remove this function from Windows 11 and one of the reasons could be performance. In the first versions of Windows back in the 90s, the taskbar supported seconds, but it ended up becoming something optional since they generated performance problems, something that should not happen today where it is normal to have more than 8 GB of RAM. However, the frequent updates required to display seconds on the taskbar can still cause our computer to become slower than normal.

The only way to get the system tray clock to show the seconds is through the installation of a third-party application.

Programs to add seconds to the clock

To show the seconds in the system tray clock we can make use of programs developed by third parties for this purpose. These are compatible with both Windows 10 and Windows 11 and avoid us having to make changes to the registry to achieve it.

T-Clock, fully customize the Windows 10 clock

This application aims to improve the Windows 10 clock. To do this, it changes its default format and allows the seconds counter to be displayed, along with the current day and date. It also allows you to modify the time format and customize it even more, modifying the font and size, the colors and the type of background, as well as the position of the clock within the taskbar. The application is open source and free and we can download it from its repository on GitHub .

From its own configuration window , we will be able to set customizable alarms and timers and a stopwatch are also included to monitor the activity that we are carrying out. We will only have to check the Second box so that the seconds appear on the Windows clock. In addition, it has a productivity tool to improve our workflow. For example, options to manage open windows, access the task manager, quickly open the audio control section or display properties.

ElevenClock, show the seconds counter in Windows 11

This is a third-party program that can help us customize the clock on the Windows 11 taskbar. ElevenClock was designed to bring back this functionality, but has evolved and now allows us to replace our system clock to allow you to customize it, add seconds, move it, change its color, etc. It is open source software, so we can download it for free from GitHub.

Once installed, it will run in the background, displaying the seconds on the system bar clock. From its configuration section , we can configure the behavior of the clock (tick to show the seconds), its position and size, its appearance, the date and time settings, and even test experimental features.

Start11

It is a customization program for Windows 11 with which you can change the appearance of the taskbar and the Start menu. We can adjust transparencies, colors, shortcuts, icon sizes, program lists, among other elements. Also, starting with build 22610, the program will support the ability to display the seconds within the clock that appears on the taskbar. That is why this feature will be available to everyone starting with Windows 11 22H2. We can download a free trial version of Start11 from its website. Its price starts from 7.99 euros.

By default, the Windows 10 clock on the taskbar shows hours & minutes and the date. Two small changes and it will also show seconds and the day of the week.

Adding seconds

requires a change to the registry. As of the writing of this article, this does not work in Windows 11.

Caution: while it is fairly straightforward to edit the Windows registry, don’t make random changes. There is no Undo and changes take effect with no Save command. Having a good image backup of your computer is—as always—advised.

If you are uncomfortable with using the Registry Editor, you can download . See the ReadMe.txt file in the zip file for instructions.

Open the Registry Editor (Start|Windows Administrative Tools). In the left pane drill down to:

Right-click on Advanced and choose New | DWORD (32-bit) value from the context menu.

In the open dialogue box, overwrite the default New Value #1 and name the value ShowSecondsInSystemClock.

If you accidentally click off New Value #1, right-click it, and choose Rename.

Double-click the ShowSecondsInSystemClock value in the right pane, set the Value data to 1, and click OK.

Close the Registry Editor, sign out of Windows and sign back in. Your clock will now display seconds.

If you want to change the clock back to not show seconds, edit the ShowSecondsInSystemClock value and change the Value data to 0.

Adding the day of the week

Run Control Panel (click Start, start typing control panel and when it appears in the results, click it).

Select Region (Clock and Region if you are in Category view). On the Formats tab, click the Additional settings… button. On the Date tab, in the Date formats section, click the start of the field for Short date: and ddd and a space (mine was yyyy-MM-dd, so the result was ddd yyyy-MM-dd).

Click the Apply button, check the clock on the Taskbar, and decide if you like it.

I tried changing the format to have a comma after the day of the week by using ddd, yyyy-MM-dd and it looked fine on the Taskbar as Thu, 2022-02-24, but dates in Excel were then formatted oddly: what used to display as 2022-02-24 was displaying as 2022,02,24. If I removed the comma after ddd Excel displayed dates as before. You know, because Windows is so consistent!

The solution to activate Seconds display in the Task-Bar of Windows 10 Desktop!

The Windows 10 / 11 Taskbar clock can accurately display the exact time to the second. This feature requires a registry hack and works on Windows 10 / 11, whether in the Windows 10 / 11 Home and Pro OS, it has been tested and successfully verified at MS 10 / 11 OS. And of course, in Enter display name text box, you can rename the clock as you like. Here you can rename it as US. In default, it shows as Clock 1.

5. If you want to add the second clock, you can check the next Show this clock option, and the second Select time zone option will enable. You can choose the time zone from the drop-down list such as (UTC + 10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney. And in the Enter display name textbox, rename it as Sydney.

6. Then hit Apply and OK to take effect.

Then you can see the two different time clocks in the time pane locating on the right side of the Desktop

If you hope to add the third or the fourth desktop clock to Windows 10, just try to show the clock and then enter the display name for it as well.

Part 2: Display a Digital Clock to Windows 10 Desktop
