Windows 10’s Fall Creators Update adds a “3D Objects” folder to This PC. It even appears in File Explorer’s sidebar. Microsoft is clearly trying to promote Paint 3D and Windows 10’s other new 3D features, but you can hide the folder if you don’t like it—you just need to dig into the registry.

This won’t delete the folder from your PC. The 3D Objects folder and its contents will still be accessible at C:\Users\NAME\3D Objects , where NAME is the name of your Windows user account. This merely removes it from File Explorer’s sidebar.

You can also remove the other folders from This PC, but we think the other folders are pretty useful. The 3D Objects folder probably isn’t useful for most people, however.

Remove “3D Objects” by Editing the Registry

You’ll have to edit the registry to do this. Here’s our standard warning: The Registry Editor is a powerful tool and misusing it can render your system unstable or even inoperable. This is a pretty simple hack and as long as you stick to the instructions, you shouldn’t have any problems. That said, if you’ve never worked with it before, consider reading about how to use the Registry Editor before you get started. And definitely back up the Registry (and your computer!) before making changes.

To get started, open the Registry Editor by clicking Start, typing “regedit”, and pressing Enter. Give it permission to make changes to your PC.

First, head to the following key in the Registry Editor window. You can copy and paste the below line into the address bar or navigate using the left sidebar.

Locate the subkey named under NameSpace in the left pane. Right-click it, select “Delete”, and confirm you want to delete the key.

Second, head to the following key in the Registry Editor window. You can copy-paste the below line into the address bar or navigate using the left sidebar.

(If you don’t have a “Wow6432Node” key on your PC, you’re using a 32-bit version of Windows 10. You can just stop now—you’re done! If you do see the key, you’re using a 64-bit version of Windows 10 and you’ll need to continue with the instructions.)

Again, locate the subkey named under NameSpace in the left pane. Right-click it, select “Delete”, and confirm you want to delete the key.

You’re now done. The “3D Objects” folder will have vanished from This PC, both in the main view and in File Explorer’s sidebar.

You shouldn’t have to restart your PC. However, if the 3D Objects folder doesn’t vanish instantly for some reason, restarting your PC should fix the problem.

If you want to restore the folder for some reason, just recreate the subkeys you deleted in the same place and give them the name . You don’t have to add anything inside the subkeys—as long as they’re in the correct place with the correct name, the 3D Objects folder will reappear.

Step 1: Press Windows + R key to call out the Run window. Type regedit in the Run window and then hit the OK button to open Windows Registry.

Step 2: On the Windows Registry window, expand the following folders one by one or you can also copy the following path to access find Registry quicker.

With the release of Windows 10 in 2015, Microsoft introduced a new section to its File Explorer called Folders. Originally, it included the following six User Folders:

• Desktop
• Documents
• Downloads

Now, every time you opened This PC (My Computer), there were these to the six folders in the top section of the File Explorer. These folders take a lot of space on your main File Explorer window. There is no point in using them at their default location when you can easily access all of these folders from the Navigation pane using the Libraries or the Quick Access feature. This PC, you can make more space for Drives, Partitions, Devices, and Network Locations.

With the release of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, Microsoft added another folder in this collection called 3D Objects. This folder automatically re-appears in the This PC view even if you had it disabled prior to the update. You’ll notice that it re-appears after the Windows 10 April 2018 Update as well, unlike the other six User Folders.

Here’s How to Remove the 3D Objects folder from the Windows 10 File Explorer.

Step 1: Press Windows + R keys together to open the Run dialog box. Type regedit in the text field, and then click OK to open Registry Editor.

Step 2: Navigate to the 3D Objects folder location Key in Windows Registry Editor.

Step 3: Right-click on the Registry Key, and click Delete.

Step 4: Click Yes to confirm the Registry Key deletion.

Step 5: Now, open the Windows File Explorer, and you’ll notice that the 3D Objects folder is gone.

You may still see the 3D Objects folder in the Browse window opened by various programs for file browsing and selection.

Step 6: In order remove it from there, too; delete the following key as well using the same method.

Step 7: Try browsing for a file again, this time you won’t find the 3D Objects folder.

The 3D Objects Folder is gone… until the Next Upgrade.

We know that the This PC in Windows 10 shows library folders by default. In Creators Update and earlier Windows 10 versions, Documents, Pictures, Music, Downloads, Desktop, and Videos library folders used to appear in This PC.

With Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, Microsoft added 3D Objects folder to This PC and the folder appears by default. As the name of the folder suggests, 3D Objects is added to save all 3D models created apps.

When combined with a touch display and a stylus or pen, Paint 3D can be a powerful tool for creating three-dimensional objects, a feature many artists and designers find useful.

However, if you are not inclined to use Paint 3D, you may find the prominence of a 3D Objects folder, and possibly several other folders, on the This PC screen of File Explorer obtrusive and unnecessary. Unfortunately, you cannot remove those folders from File Explorer with a simple change to default settings. That procedure requires an edit of the Windows 10 Registry File.

How to remove 3D Objects folder from File Explorer

Disclaimer: Editing the Windows Registry file is a serious undertaking. A corrupted Windows Registry file could render your computer inoperable, requiring a reinstallation of the Windows 10 operating system and potential loss of data. Back up the Windows 10 Registry file and create a valid restore point before you proceed.

To get a better idea of what we are talking about, open File Explorer in Windows 10 and then navigate to the This PC screen, as shown in Figure A. Take note of the default listing of folders in the right-hand window.

We are going to concentrate our efforts on the 3D Objects folder, but this technique will work for any of the default folders listed in that section of File Explorer, if you know the code. Further, if you are running the 64-bit version of Windows 10, you will have to perform two edits.

Type “regedit” into the search box on the Windows 10 desktop and select the appropriate result to start the Registry Editor application. As shown in Figure B, navigate to this key (it’s a deep dive):

To complicate matters, the subkeys in the NameSpace section are coded, so you have to carefully choose the key with this code (on my computer, it was in the second position, see Figure C):

Right-click the key and select “Delete” from the context menu and confirm your action.

If you are running the 32-bit version of Windows 10, you have completed the procedure, however, if you are running the 64-bit version, you will have to perform a second edit. As shown in Figure D, navigate to this key:

As before, locate this coded key in the NameSpace folder, as shown in Figure E:

Right-click the key and select “Delete” from the context menu and then confirm your selection to complete the process. Exit out of the Registry File editor. The change should take effect the next time you open File Explorer.

The 3D Objects folder is located in the Users folder and will still be there after implementing this procedure, but it will no longer be displayed so prominently in the This PC section of File Explorer, as shown in Figure F.

To restore the 3D Objects folder to File Explorer, add the coded key back into the two NameSpace Folders using the Registry File Editor.

Now close out of Registry Editor and File Explorer if it’s open. Relaunch File Explorer and click on This PC, and the 3D Objects folder should be gone.

As far as the 3D Objects file is concerned, it would have been nice to be able to say I didn’t want it to be installed. Instead of giving information on how to remove it if users don’t want it, and making sure that it would be difficult to do, why not just give us all the option. This is one reason why I HATE Microsoft. Constant unnecessary updates and loads of media stuff that I don’t need or want. Another example is Skype, which I don’t use but my laptop doesn’t let me do anything until Skype is on screen ready to run.

If you don’t like any Product you are free to purchase else. You see everyone has terms and condition. If you go blindly that’s your fault. They are doing business. They are not government to whom you pay tax. And even if you wanna complaint go to customer care. Stop bitching about stuffs.

Because, in a free market, if you don’t like something, it must be your fault.

As for them “doing business”, it’s another laugh. A business sells a product. Customers buy the product. If you are forced to use a product and they are “doing business” by making it not what you want but what they want so as to push more products and collect data to sell to third parties, making it hard of impossible to customize a digital product, it’s not “business”, it’s just BS.

You can move 3D Objects to the bottom of your Explorer menu just by going into C:\Users\NAME\3D Objects and renaming it as Z3D Objects. Explorer will sort it alphabetically to the bottom of the menu. No registry hassles needed.

The Fall creators updates was infuriating – I’m an accountant and these pushed tools are completely useless (and wasted 2 hours of my life at quarter end) — so anything I can do to roll back, move, modify, or otherwise mess with Microsoft’s intentions makes me happy.

I do some 3D work, however most of my 3D work is done with Blender not Paint3D anyway so the 3D Objects folder wouldn’t really concern me. When I first saw it though I actually thought it was something to do with 3D printing, however I didn’t think 3D printing had become that popular to actual warrant a separate folder for it.

I actually don’t get the thought process behind this extra folder though as for those of us that would use it, it would be just easy to create a sub folder from documents, and the rest of the people are just baffled by it! I have to wonder what’s next? a database folder maybe, or an accountants folder? Maybe a better idea of Microsoft would be to allow people to create their own custom libraries, that way if people want specific speciality libraries for their work they can just add them and call them what they want.

Since we’ve deleted the keys related to the 3D Objects folder from the Registry Editor, we need to recreate them. To make things easier for you, I’ve created downloadable reg files that work for you.

Depending on your system architecture. i.e., 32-bit or 64-bit, download the reg file using the below link. If you want to, you can open the downloaded reg file with Notepad to see what keys you are adding.

After downloading, extract the reg file to your desktop, right-click on the file and select “Merge.” In the subsequent confirmation windows, click “Yes” to continue.

That is it. You will see the 3D Objects folder re-appear in the File Explorer. If not, restart your system, and it should appear.

Would you like to delete the 3D Objects folder in Windows 10? It was bothering us but mostly because there’s no delete or hide option. 3D Objects can be found in File Explorer under This PC and Users. Here’s how to remove both.

The 3D Objects folders contain any 3D items you use in apps, including Paint 3D or Mixed Reality Viewer. If you don’t use these apps, you can delete these folders.

Remember to back up your registry first. If you make a mistake or change your mind, you can easily restore it from a backup.

1: Remove 3D Objects from This PC

Open the registry editor by pressing the Windows Key + R and type in regedit and press enter.

Paste HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace into the address field.

Locate the key names , right-click and delete.

Close File Explorer and open it again, and it should be gone.

Some 64-Bit users might need to also delete from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace.

2: Remove 3D Objects from File Explorer

Unlike the shortcut from This PC, the other folder is located under Users\YourName. Right-click on 3D Objects and choose delete.

Windows 8 and Windows 10 come with a set of folders (6) shown in This PC view. With Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, a new folder has been added to list of folders in This PC; it’s the 3D Objects folder where the Paint 3D app saves files by default.

We saw how to remove the 6 special folders in the article Remove Quick access and User Folders from File Explorer. This article describes how to remove the 3D Objects folder from This PC — both in the tree view as well as in the right pane.

Remove 3D Objects special folder from This PC

To remove the 3D Objects folder icon from Computer (This PC), follow these steps:

Option 1:

This option removes the 3D Objects folder icon for your user account only. This is preferred if you want to make changes only in your profile, or if you don’t have administrator privileges.

1. Start the Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and go to:
2. Create a subkey named HideMyComputerIcons
3. With HideMyComputerIcons selected, create a REG_DWORD (32-bit) value named
4. Double-click and sets its data to 1
5. Exit the Registry Editor.

To automate the above steps, use this REG below:

Undo information: To reverse the above registry modification to get the 3D Objects folder icon back, simply delete the DWORD value in the above registry location. Alternately, use this REG file:

Option 2:

This option removes the 3D Objects folder icon for every user account on the computer. This method requires administrator privileges.

1. Download remove-3d-objects-folder.zip and extract the contents to a folder.
2. Double-click to run the file remove-3d-objects-folder.reg to remove the 3D Objects special folder from This PC.
3. Click Yes when prompted. This REG fix clears the following registry key(s)

… where the GUID is the unique identifier for 3D Objects shell namespace object.

Note that deleting the above key(s) just hides the 3D Objects folder from the This PC namespace view, but the actual folder can be accessed by typing the following path in the File Explorer address bar.

That’s it! This removes the 3D Objects folder from This PC. In case you change your mind and want to restore the 3D Objects icon back, run the appropriate “restore” REG file for your system (32-bit vs 64-bit Windows).

Replace 3D Objects folder with a custom folder

Here’s a fun tip! If you want to replace the 3D Objects folder with a custom folder location of your choice, here’s a registry edit for you. Let’s say you want to add your custom Tools folder in place of 3D Objects folder.

Create a .reg file from the following contents:

The above registry settings replace the 3D Objects folder with the Tools folder (located in D:\ drive).

Download a nice looking icon for that folder, name it as tools.ico , and store it in the same folder.

To undo the above setting (to get back the 3D Objects folder back), use the following registry settings:

That’s it. This brings back the 3D Objects folder to This PC.

With the recent Windows 10 updates, Microsoft has been focusing more and more on the creators among its user base. This is a demographic which over the past few years have sort of titled away from the platform. With the Windows 10 Creator’s update, and now the Fall Creator’s update, Redmond is making sure to make Windows a lucrative option for them. Not all the new features and changes in the aforementioned updates have been about creators though. But there are a few of these features that the company just pushes in your face. Like the 3D Objects folder which was placed right under This PC. The folder has been included as a Library and is the default storage location for 3D objects on your PC.

This was added to Windows with the Fall Creator’s update, i.e. in Windows v1709. The company is clearly trying to promote Paint 3D and other 3D features of Windows 10. Most Windows users don’t create or deal with 3D objects at all, however. And while the presence of a folder you don’t want is not really bothersome (that is so not true), some of you might want to get rid of it anyways. There is no official way to remove the folder from your Library but with a simple Registry tweak, it is quite possible.

Before we go there though, we must tell you that fiddling around with the Windows registry is not a good idea when you don’t know what you’re doing. It’s a powerful tool but it can also make or break your system. As long as you stick to this tutorial though there should not be any problems. Just try not to get adventurous.

Remove 3D Objects folder by editing Registry

1. Open registry editor. Hit Windows + R and type regedit in the Run dialog that appears, then hit Enter. Alternatively, you can click the search bar in the taskbar or hit the Windows key and type regedit to find Registry Editor. Then click on it to launch the program.
2. Navigate to the following key in the Registry Editor window. You can navigate via the sidebar or simply copy and paste the address into the address bar and hit Enter.
3. Under the NameSpace key, locate the subkey .
4. Right click on it and select Delete and click Yes on the confirmation dialog to confirm the action.
5. If you’re using a 32-bit version of Windows 10, you can stop right now and close the registry editor. However, if you’re using a 64-bit version of Windows 10, there’s another NameSpace key you should check out now. This one is located at the following path.
6. Locate the subkey once again and delete it just like you did the last time.

You’re all done now. Open This PC and you should no longer see the 3D Objects folder there. This does not usually require restarting your PC. But in case the folder does not immediately disappear for you, a restart should fix the problem. Keep in mind though that this registry tweak only removes the folder from This PC, it does not entirely delete the folder. You can manually delete it by going to C:\Users\NAME\ and deleting the 3D Objects folder.

To remove 3D objects from this computer, you will need to make some registry changes. Making an error while modifying the registry can have serious consequences for system stability, so back up your registry first

1. Click on Win + R open Run away window.
2. A type freeze and press To come in.
3. Click on Yes in the User Account Control box.
4. In Registry Editor go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer MyComputer NameSpace using either the left pane or the address bar at the top of the window.

Microsoft released a new Insider build on February 24, 2021; it included fixes for the most part but made a few changes as well. One of the changes hides the 3D Objects folder by default on the operating system.

The “This PC” menu in File Explorer’s sidebar displays a number of default folders and connected drives by default. One of the folders is 3D Objects, and since it is the only one that begins with a number, it is the first folder of the list.

3D Objects was added to the operating system in 2017 when Microsoft released the Fall Creators Update for the Windows 10 operating system. The Creators Update introduced 3D applications, e.g. Paint 3D, on the system, and its successor the special folder 3D Objects, designed to be the storage location for 3D files.

The guide may not be needed for much longer, as Microsoft will hide the folder in future versions of Windows automatically according to the changelog of the most recent Windows 10 Insider build:

The 3D Objects folder will no longer be shown as a special folder in File Explorer after updating to this build.

The folder is still available, but users need to enable it if they want to continue using it. Microsoft notes that users who do, have two options to do so:

1. Load %userprofile% which displays the folder next to all other special folders and other user profile folders.
2. By selecting View > Navigation Pane > Show all Folders in File Explorer.

The first option is a temporary solution as you need to access the folder each time you want to open the 3D Objects folder; the second option is permanent and restores the current status quo of stable versions of Windows 10.

Microsoft did not reveal usage numbers for its 3D applications and use of the 3D Objects folder. The removal is an indicator that the folder may not have seen the usage numbers that Microsoft hoped it would get since it was introduced.

Microsoft always believes in adding new capabilities to its OS with a focus on stabilization. The spike in the popularity of 3D content might have prodded Microsoft to introduce this change under file Explorer.

It is convenient that we do regular cleaning of our devices, mobiles or computers, because we store all kinds of files or folders that we do not use. And in some of those cleanings you may have noticed that there is a folder that you do not use in Windows : the 3D objects folder . Why is it there and why can’t you delete the 3D Objects folder even if you don’t need to?

If you don’t use Paint 3D or a similar program, it is possible that you have never used this folder, that it is empty and that you want to delete it. You will see it by accessing “This computer” on your computer and you can see it continuously in the side menu when you access the different folders or files on your computer. If you don’t want it, you can delete it although it is a bit more complex than right clicking and “Delete”. But it can.

What is the 3D object folder?

The 3D objects folder, as its name suggests, is the space on your Windows computer that stores this type of content that we can use in specialized 3D applications. Microsoft added it several years ago, with the launch of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, in order to bet on 3D design and facilitate the work of dedicated users. Therefore, what this folder does is save all the projects that we have done in 3D with specialized programs such as Paint 3D, for example. They will be stored in this folder.

Delete folder

The Windows 3D Objects folder is a folder that you may have found when browsing your computer and that you probably have empty and do not use but cannot delete. If you go to This computer, you will see that it appears in the “Folders” section along with others such as Downloads, Images, Music … It is created automatically whether you use it or not but if you try to delete them you will see that there is no possible option and you should see it there, empty, without serving any utility. You really may not have realized its existence or you don’t mind that it is there, empty, without fulfilling any function. But in case you have decided to delete the 3D objects folder you can do it in a few minutes.

There is no simple way to hide or delete it from the computer itself, but you can do it from the computer’s registry , looking for a key.

Type “Registry Editor” in Start. Once open, in the top bar, write:

When you have this NameSpace folder open in regedit, look in the menu on the left side. Specifically, look for in the list of folders that you will find in this menu. Once you find it, right click on it and tap on “Delete”

If you have already completed this, you must follow the following steps: Write in the top bar:

We follow the steps similar to the previous one: look in the left menu for the registry key and right click when you find it. In the options menu when right-clicking, choose “Delete.”

When you have completed all the previous steps, you will simply have to restart the computer to see that the 3D objects folder has completely disappeared.

Recover the folder

Once you have deleted it there is no “undo” button so think about if it really bothers you that it is there. Even so, it is not an irreversible process and you can show the 3D folder in Windows again by following the steps above but in reverse. That is, instead of deleting the keys you will have to create them. To do this, we will have to follow the steps above but in reverse and we recommend that you keep the following keys or this tutorial by hand, because you will have to write them.

Type “Registry Editor” in Start. Once open, in the top bar, write:

When you’re here, right-click on the side and tap “New …” and “Password” to create it. When you have created the key, choose the old name: We will have to repeat the process one more time from the other path. That is, in the top bar write

Once you have it, do the same: right click on the left side of the Registry Editor screen and in the pop-up menu you must choose “New”. Here, choose the first option: Password. Create a key with the above code and reboot. Once you start the computer again, the folder will appear again.

Is it essential?

It probably isn’t and you can save the 3D files in another folder on your computer if you want, if you’re really going to work with this type of content and want to have it more organized, you don’t have to “settle” for having everything here but you can use any other location as you use it with other images that are not in 3D and that you organize on your computer as is more comfortable.

Upgrades

Keep in mind that even if you have decided to delete the 3D objects folder, it may appear in the future on your computer without you doing anything. But don’t worry and you usually just do the same steps. It may be that in future Windows 10 updates it will be “released” again but you will have to follow the tutorial to remove it again from the files and folders on the computer.

Microsoft is no longer treating possibly the most unused folder, 3D Objects, as a special folder in File Explorer.

With the release of Windows 10 1703, otherwise known as the Creators Update, Microsoft included a new application called ‘3D Viewer’ that allowed you to view and manipulate 3D models.

As a place to store all those 3D object files that Microsoft thought people would be downloading, they created a ‘3D Objects’ folder in each user’s user profile directory. This folder was given a unique icon and was designated as a special folder in File Explorer, as shown below.

However, most people did not find 3D Viewer as useful as Microsoft, and the most popular search queries regarding the ‘3D Objects folder’ was how to remove it.

Microsoft finally got the hint, and with yesterday’s release of Windows 10 Insider build 21322 in the Dev channel, the 3D Objects folder is no longer displayed as a special folder in File Explorer. However, Windows 10 users can still access it directly from the %UserProfile% folder.

“The 3D Objects folder will no longer be shown as a special folder in File Explorer after updating to this build. If you need to access this folder, you can do so via typing %userprofile% in File Explorer or through the navigation pane option “Show all folders,” Microsoft explained in the Windows 10 Insider build 21322 release notes.

While this is not a particularly big change for Windows users, it is one less folder cluttering Windows 10’s File Explorer, which can quickly become filled with extraneous devices and drives.

Classic Microsoft Paint has been “re-imagined”, introducing Microsoft Paint 3D. Another time wasting app for children with an updated look and feel as well as many new features such as new brushes and tools capable of creating 2D or 3D models.

In my opinion, this virtually reality introductory application is virtually completely useless. Don’t get me wrong, the application works just fine, but I personally have no need for it.

In this article I show you how to completely remove Microsoft Paint 3D as well as all the junk it leaves behind.

Remove Microsoft Paint 3D #

To remove the Microsoft Paint 3D application, click on the “Start” button at the bottom left of your screen and type “Paint“.

Right click on “Paint 3D” and select “Uninstall“. Confirm the Uninstall and in a moment the application will be removed. Note that Windows 10 still ships with both versions of the Paint app, which means that after removing Paint 3D, you’ll still have access to the classic Paint app to edit or create images.

In typical Microsoft fashion, the uninstalled application left behind some unwanted links, particularly within the context menu when clicking on any image file.

If you want to re-install the Microsoft Paint 3D application, simply click on “Edit with Paint 3D“. However, this can be unwanted and very annoying so read on if you want to learn how to remove the Edit with Paint 3D from the Windows 10 context menu.

Remove “Edit with Paint 3D” Context Menu #

After uninstalling Paint 3D, the “Edit with Paint 3D” context menu option will continue to appear when right clicking on any image files. Selecting the “Edit with Paint 3D” option will reinstall Microsoft Paint 3D. If you want to avoid this operation, you’ll need to remove those entries from the context menu using the Registry Editor.

Important: Editing the Windows registry is risky, and may cause irreversible damage to your operating system. It’s recommended to make a full backup of your PC before proceeding. Also, reinstalling the Paint 3D app won’t restore these “Edit with Paint 3D” context menu entries. If you want to restore them in the future, it’s recommended to right-click the 3D Edit and Export the key first. Then you can simply double-click the .reg file to add the entry back to the context menu.

Click on “Start” then type in “Registry” and select “Registry Editor” from the menu. Then simply copy and paste the following paths into your address bar, right-click on the “3D Edit” (sub-folder) key and select “Delete“:

Upon completion, the Windows 10 context menu links will no longer appear for any images and you won’t have to worry about accidentally reinstalling Microsoft Paint 3D.

Reinstalling Microsoft Paint 3D #

If it’s needed, you can always reinstall the Microsoft Paint 3D application from the Microsoft Store app or by clicking any “Edit with Paint 3D” contextual links available by right clicking on any image file, assuming you did not complete the removal process via the registry editor above.

Create a “Edit with Paint 3D” Context Menu #

Should you have gone through the registry removal process for the “Edit with Paint 3D” contextual links, don’t worry as we’ll go through the steps to manually add these links back now.

Once again, access the Windows registry by clicking “Start” then typing “Registry” and selecting “Registry Editor” from the menu. Revisit each link listed in the the “Remove “Edit with Paint 3D” Context Menu” section but remove the “\3D Edit” from the end of the text since it no longer exists. Otherwise the link will take you no where.

Then right click on the “Shell” folder and select “New” then “Key“, type “3D Edit“. Click on the new 3D Edit folder and double click on the “(Default)” item in the window to the right. Set the “Value data” to: @%SystemRoot%\system32\mspaint.exe,-59500

Next, right click on the “3D Edit” folder and select “New” then “Key” and name it “command“. Right click on the new “command” folder and select “New” then “Expandable String Value“, name it “(Default)” (should be okay to leave the default REG_SZ in place) and set the “Value data” to: %SystemRoot%\system32\mspaint.exe “%1” /ForceBootstrapPaint3D

That should restore the Edit with Paint 3D contextual menu link for all your desired image files.

PC users who have upgraded to Windows 8.1, by now, probably have discovered that Microsoft has renamed Computer to This PC, and This PC now displays Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Downloads, and Videos folders in addition to hard drives, optical drives, and removable devices.

In simple words, when you open This PC (Computer) by double-clicking on the This PC icon on the desktop or by pressing Windows + E hotkey, Explorer now not only shows drives but also shows above mentioned folders.

Even though it’s possible to hide Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, and Videos folders by clicking on the small arrow icon next to the Folders, some users may not feel the need of these folders in This PC (My Computer), as Desktop and Downloads folders are already present in the navigation pane (under Favorites) and one can always add Documents, Pictures, and Videos folders to the Favorites for quick access.

If, for whatever reason you want to remove those folders from This PC or Computer, complete the given below instructions.

Step 1: Open Run dialog box. To do this, simultaneously press Windows + R keys. Type Regedit.exe in the box and then press Enter key to open Registry Editor. Click Yes button when you see the UAC dialog.

Step 2: In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:

NOTE: We suggest you backup the key by exporting the Registry key to a safe location so that you can easily restore those folders by importing the previously exported key. To export the key, right-click on NameSpace key and then click Export option.

Step 3: Right-click on the following keys one-by-one and delete them:

That’s it! Desktop, Downloads, Documents, Music, Videos, and Pictures should not appear in This PC or Computer.

Just like with deleting the 3D Objects folder, if you never use Paint 3D in Windows 10, you can clean up the context menu by removing it.

By default, when you right-click on a photo or image file, the ‘Edit with Paint 3D’ option is displayed in the context menu.

Remove Edit with Paint 3D

To remove the option for JPG images, hit Windows Key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog and type: regedit and click OK or hit Enter.

Then navigate to the following path:

Then right-click on the 3D Edit key and choose Delete.

Keep in mind the above step removes “Edit with Paint 3D” from the context menu for .jpg files. For other image formats, you need to replace the /.jpg/ part of the path with .png or .bmp — whichever file format you want it removed from and delete the 3D Edit key.

For example, in the screenshot below I am deleting it from displaying in the context menu for PNG files.

When you’re finished with each file format, close out of the Registry and the next time you right-click a photo you should no longer see “Edit with Paint 3D” listed in the context menu.

After deleting the 3D Edit key from the Registry, “Edit with Paint 3D” no longer appears on the context menu.

In Creators Update and above versions of Windows 10, there is a new option in the file context menu called Edit with Paint 3D for image file formats. The Edit with Paint 3D opens the image file in Paint 3D app.

As you might have observed by now, the Edit with Paint 3D context menu option appears only when you right click on a picture file. In other words, the option appears when you right-click on JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF, TIF, and TIFF image file types.

The Edit with Paint 3D option is added by an app called Paint 3D app. If you don’t know, the Paint 3D app is introduced with Creators Update for Windows 10. Although the Paint 3D is an alternative and update to the classic Paint program, the classic Paint program continues to be the part of Windows 10.

The new Paint 3D app is designed to help users create 3D objects using regular keyboards, mouse, touch screen and stylus. You can open regular pictures with Paint 3D app and create 3D objects out of it.

The Paint 3D is certainly a step ahead of the classic Paint program, but there are many users who use third-party image editing tools like Paint.net to get their job done.

If you use the built-in classic Paint or a third-party image editing tool, you might want to remove the Edit with Paint 3D option from the context menu in Windows 10.

Follow the instructions mentioned in one of the given below methods to remove Edit with Paint 3D option from right-click of Windows 10.

Remove Edith with Paint 3D option via Registry

NOTE: We recommend you create a system restore point or create a backup of Registry before manually editing the Registry.

Step 1: Type Regedit in the Start/taskbar search box and then press Enter key. Click Yes button when you see the UAC prompt to launch to open Registry Editor.

Step 2: In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:

Step 3: Under the Shell key, you should see 3D Edit key. Right-click on the 3D Edit key and then click Delete option to delete the key. This will remove the Edit with Paint 3D option for BMP image files. You need to do the same for all image file types.

Step 4: Next, navigate to the following keys one after another. Look for 3D Edit key and delete the same.

In the windows 10 profiles there is a folder called “3D Objects” as well as the expected “Contacts”, “desktop”, “Documents” etc.

Now, I usually redirect these with Group Policy. However in the Group Policy editor I don’t see “3D Objects” under “User Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Folder Redirection” where I was expecting to see it.

Am I missing something here?

does not appear to be a real “folder” its a registry item that can be removed if you dont use it for 3d models

Those keys seem to just remove the folder from the “computer” page in file explorer. The folder still exists in the user profile.

I don’t mind having the 3D Objects folder around, but it really should be redirected to follow the My Documents folder. Just like I do with the Videos, Pictures and Music folders.

So, the My Documents folder is redirected to the homepath of the user, and the videos, pictures and music follow (so end up as homepath\videos etc). Homepath is on a netweork share. The 3D objects folder surely should be able to be redirected in the same fashion, shouldn’t it?

Yes, that is possible to do. However, I have a network of 300 PCs and 300 users, so a manual solution isn’t an option.

Out looks like it might be possible to do some kind of custom folder direction. But it’s going to take me a while for me to check out and test.

We’ve put out the windows 10 PCs with this problem still there. When a user opens the 3D Objects folder it puts them in their profile, not a redirected folder. If they save a massive file in there their profile takes forever to load.

I haven’t had the change of looking at any custom folder redirection stuff yet.

Hi RoboOx. Is there a solution for this problem? Even I am having the same problem. In GPO, there is no folder for “3D Object”. I’ve raised a question with MS Forum also.

There has been a drastic change in the user interface in Windows 10 when compared with the previous versions of Windows OS. One of them is the replacement of “My Computer” with “This PC” in Windows 10. Till Windows 8 we used you view only the hard drives in the My Computer section, but now in Windows 10 “This PC” also shows the folders along with the hard drives, network locations and removable storage devices.

If you are not interested in using this feature, then you can hide them from appearing by making a small registry change. All you need to do is a little registry hack. You don’t need to be a computer geek to accomplish this. We’ll help you to do this operation through our simple post.

Without Changing Registry

Well, as said above we have to do a little registry change to hide the folders from appearing in This PC. But to registry changes you need to have admin permissions on your PC. If you don’t have admin access, then you can simply hide the folders from This PC section by clicking on the Folders heading. Clicking or tapping on this heading will collapse it and hides them from appearing. It will stay collapsed till you again click on it.

Changing Registry

If you have administrative permissions, then you can do the registry hack to remove folders. But before proceeding further, you need to know the version of your Windows OS whether it is 32 or 64-bit versions. To check the bit version, click on the Start menu and open the Settings. Then select System › About. You can now see the bit versions of the operating system next to “System type“.

Download the registry files from the below download section and open the folder as per your operating system version. Once you open the folder you see the readily available registry file. All you need to do is double-click on the Remove All User Folders From This PC 32-bit.reg file to remove the folders. But you can’t just see the immediate changes in your file explorer. To view whether the folder has been removed or not, just restart the file explorer either by restarting your PC or by using Task manager.

If you want to restore back these folders, then double-click on the Restore All User Folders To This PC 32-bit.reg file to bring back those folders. Also, if you want to remove or restore individual folders then open the Individual Folders folder and run that specific registry.

But perhaps most importantly, Microsoft will now ensure that Paint 3D and the other major 3D app called Microsoft 3D viewer will not be installed by default on Windows 10 – if a user decides to format their hard drive and perform a fresh install. 1. Follow steps one through three above to head back to where you need to be within the registry.

2. Right-click “NameSpace” and click “New” and then “Key.”

3. Name the key one of the folder hashes above. Make sure you include the brackets when you copy and paste the folder you want to add to This PC.

If you head to This PC, you’ll see the folder has been added right away.
