Plex makes media manageable and does an excellent job of curating content from multiple sources, organizing it, streaming it to a range of devices, making it available for you to enjoy at home. At TechJunkie, we write a lot about Plex as it continues to be an outstanding system for organizing your media library. Plex is notable as a platform with an intuitive User Interface (UI), delivering nearly seamless performance and streaming. That said, Plex isn’t without its quirks and one of them is Plex’s naming conventions for TV shows and movies. Plex uses the thetvdb.com as the bases for naming shows. And if the media doesn’t appear there, or is formatted differently, it won’t appear properly in Plex. Luckily, there’s a workaround.
When uploading media to your Plex Media Server, you need to use a specific naming convention to enable the system to categorize and identify the media correctly. TV shows, movies, and music should always have their own folders and none should appear in the other’s folder to avoid confusion. When you’ve had your Plex for a while the mislabeling and filing really starts to add up to some confusion and more time than you’d likely want to spend searching for shows and movies.
Media should be uploaded with the correct folder and filename otherwise Plex may have trouble identifying it. If the filename doesn’t follow the convention, rename it using the appropriate method for your platform. For example, right-click the file and select Rename in Windows or select the file and hit Return in MacOS and type in the new name.
Plex media naming conventions
There is a specific format that you must use to arrange your media in order to have Plex identify it. This format is recommended by Plex itself to ensure the link to TVDB and their metadata crawling app can correctly identify and label media.

If you’re running more than one Plex Media Center client in your house, then it can sometimes be hard to identify which one is which. Let’s take a look at the not-so-obvious setting you need to tweak to give each of your Plex clients a unique name.
In a lot of cases, the name of any given Plex machine may not matter. But if you have multiple Plex clients on your home network and you want to take advantage of Plex’s built-in support for sending media from control applications, like Plex for iOS or the Plex Media Server web dashboard, you’ll run into a problem really quickly.
For example, recently outfitted our whole house with Raspberry Pi units running Rasplex attached to every TV. But when we want to cast a video from our Plex Media Server dashboard, this is what we see:
Should we watch the movie on RasPlex, RasPlex, RasPlex, or Rasplex?
With every client sporting an identical label, we have no idea if we’ll be sending our selected video to the bedroom, the guest room, the living room, or the movie theater in the basement. If you’re in a similar situation then this tutorial is for you. Rather than play the video casting lottery, let’s take a moment to rename all the clients so they’re easier to identify.
Surprisingly, renaming a Plex client is not particularly intuitive. You can’t rename them from the server dashboard; instead, you must rename it from each individual client.
While the client software is slightly different on each platform (so you’ll need to poke around in the settings menus), we can show you how to change in on RasPlex to give you a general idea. To do so, simply open open the “Preferences” menu, accessible when using the default RasPlex skin by simply pressing the arrow key to the left while at the main menu.
Within the preferences menu, select the gear icon on the side for “Change Preferences For System”.
There, you can select “Services” and you’ll see an entry for “Device name”. Change that entry from the generic “RasPlex” entry to a clear one which indicates where (or to what) the Plex client is connected like “Living Room” or “Projector”. It’s worth noting that this name change will only affect how the Plex server sees the client software, and doesn’t change the network host name or any other identifying information about the hardware.
Restart the device and the change should appear immediately in the casting menu for your Plex software. By the time rebooted and opened up our dashboard “Living Room” was already listed as one of the destinations, seen below. The listing in the actual Settings > Devices menu takes a little bit longer to update, but don’t worry—it’ll refresh in 10-20 minutes without a server restart and has no impact on the casting function.
Once you’ve changed one entry, power through the rest of them and you’ll have a unique name for each of your Plex clients—no more guessing required when trying to cast a movie to different screens around your home.
Listingen i menuen Indstillinger> Enheder tager lidt længere tid at opdatere, men rolig.
Zde můžete vybrat položku “Služby” a uvidíte položku “Název zařízení”.
Learning to properly use Plex movie naming conventions is important to have the Plex scanners download the correct metadata. Most movie metadata or duplicate content issues happen because the movie files aren’t organized properly.
How should your organize your movie files? Let’s look at how this is done.
Plex movie naming conventions
Movie file naming convention is important and is used to identify the movie for the metadata.
The standard naming convention is as follows:
For our example in this article, I will use “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” as the movie. Using the standard naming convention, my movie file name would be:
Alternative naming conventions for Plex version 1.20.1 and newer allows for the inclusion of either the IMDB or The MovieDB ID number. This reduces the chances of not finding the correct metadata for the movie.
For the movie I selected, I could also use the following names:
IMDB:
TMDB:
I don’t have too many metadata issues, so I don’t include the ID values in my movie file name. Of course, the choice is yours.
Movie folder structure
With the different content that can be played by Plex, it is best if each type of content is in a separate folder. This means your movie files would be in a separate folder from your TV shows.
You can keep it simple, and simply create a folder called “movies.” This folder can be located anywhere, but in this example, let’s assume it is off the root of a hard drive.
Within this folder, you have two options on how to organize your movie files for Plex. The first is to simply place the files in the “movies” folder. The second option is to create a subfolder for each movie and then place the movie file in the subfolder.
I recommend the second option. The reason is that you may end up with multiple files associated with the move, such as posters or additional versions of the move. By using movie subfolders, all files for that movie are now organized in a subfolder for that movie.
The folder name follows a similar structure to the file name:
In our example, we will create a folder for our movie:
With the folder now created, we can copy the movie file, and any associated files into the folder. Our movie file structure will now look like:
Multiple part movie
Movies that are over three hours are usually divided into multiple parts. This allows many of the Plex clients to play multiple part movies as a single movie.
A few notes regarding multiple part moves:
- Not all Plex clients support this feature.
- All parts must be in the same format, such as mkv or mp4.
- All parts need to have the same audio and subtitle streams, and in the same order.
- Up to 8 parts are supported.
I haven’t had too many issues with multi-part movies, so it is a valid option for me.
To organize a single movie over multiple files, you would use the following naming convention:
The “SplitName” value can be one of (replace “X” with the part number):
- cdX
- discX
- dvdX
- partX
- ptX
In my example, the “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” is a long movie. So long in that it is split into two parts. This means the folder and file structure of this movie would be:
In this case I used the “ptX” split name option for the movie.
Different movie versions
If you have many clients and are looking to avoid transcoding your movie files, one option is to store multiple versions of a movie. This means you may have a 1080p, 720p and 480p version of your movie.
When a client requests a movie, the movie file that will play best on that client is chosen from the multiple movie versions.
This option is not intended for movies that have a “theatrical” or “director’s cut” version. Those types of versions are better stored as separated movies in Plex.
When multiple versions of a movie are available, Plex will display a single item for that movie. Some apps will allow you to select one of the versions to play.
The naming convention for a movie with multiple versions is:
The “some text” is any text you wish to include that helps identify the movie version.
If I were to include 720p and 480p versions of “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King”, it would look like:
The additional text I added doesn’t make a difference when Plex is identifying the movie. For my movie library, I also include the audio streams included in my movie file as an easy reference.
Trailers and behind the scenes content
You can add additional movie file content to your movies, such as trailers and behind the scenes content.
There are two options when organizing such content. The first is to name the added content with this naming convention:
The “ExtraType” value can be one of the following:
- -behindthescenes
- -deleted
- -featurette
- -interview
- -scene
- -short
- -trailer
- -other
For example, the following shows four extra content files:
The second option is to create a subfolder for each of the extra content type. Then place the content file into the correct content subfolder.
I prefer the second option, as it keeps things clean and organized, but the choice is yours.
Learning to use proper Plex movie naming conventions is probably the most important aspect when managing a Plex Media Server. The naming convention is key to having the correct metadata displayed for the movie.
The examples above show how to properly organize and name your movie files. Simply follow the above conventions and you should have little issues with your movies and metadata.
This may be the age of streaming video, but we still like to keep an eye on the Plex Media Server and its various apps for people who prefer to have local copies of their content. Plex makes it easy to organize any (non-DRM) movies and TV shows saved to your hard drive, and stream them across your devices. Plex works even better when your files are named properly. That’s where a handy little utility called FileBot comes in.
FileBot is a very reliable utility that can figure out what content you have and automatically rename it for you to something that makes it easier for Plex to recognize.
Now don’t get me wrong, Plex does a great job on its own of figuring out what your poorly named files actually are, but it’s not perfect. Sometimes whole TV shows or movies won’t show up in Plex due to a poor naming scheme. FileBot helps fix that.
Getting started
Once you’ve downloaded and installed FileBot (link above) go to Start > FileBot. Once there, you’ll be confronted with several options. Select Filebot or Filebot (platform).
FileBot’s default interface.
FileBot’s interface is pretty basic but might be intimidating to some. For our purposes, make sure the Rename option is selected in the left-hand navigation bar, which it should be by default.
The Rename interface has two panels labeled Original Files and New Names. First, select a folder of content you want to rename. In this example, I want to rename season 1 of Game of Thrones.
FileBot brings order to your file-naming chaos.
Drag-and-drop the folder containing the video files into the Original Files panel. FileBot will automatically display the names of the files contained in the folder. As you can see in the image here, the file names are all over the place. Some of the files use the season/episode format while others just have the episode name. Chaos.
Next, under the New Names panel click the Fetch Data button. A drop-down menu appears with all the various content databases that FileBot can draw data from. For this example, I chose The TVDB.
Once you’ve selected your database, FileBot will automatically start matching your files to episode names. When it’s done matching, each file will be tentatively renamed in the New Names panel. You’ll want to scan these results to make sure everything is accurate. If you find a file that shouldn’t be renamed you can remove it by highlighting the file in the Original Files panel and then clicking the red “X” below that.
Once everything’s in order, click the Rename button between the two panels, and that’s it. Your files have been renamed.
The one thing to keep in mind with FileBot is that it works best to rename files in small groups such as a single season for TV shows. Not only will FileBot respond faster, but it’s easier for you to verify that each change is accurate.

I previously wrote a blog about setting up Plex Media Server as a service in Windows. However, since then I have come across a new 3rd party service manager that is, in my opinion, easier to setup and use. Plex is the key to personal media bliss. Once you download our free and easy-to-use software where you store your files (usually a computer or external hard drive), it takes care of the rest. Plex magically scans and organizes your files, automatically sorting your media beautifully and intuitively in your Plex library.
About
- Plex homescreen All of your own media. Plex is actually two things: It’s free media server software that you run on a PC, Mac, or NAS drive in your home, and it’s also a vast set of free client apps, that let you access the media server’s contents from devices like smart TVs, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, gaming consoles, phones, tablets, and way more.
- Plex is among the most popular and user-friendly solutions for creating a media server in your home network. In contrast to many other applications, which are often Windows-only, the Plex server is compatible with Linux, Mac, and even single-board computers like the Raspberry Pi.

So what is TV Rename?
TV Rename is a media management tool that runs on Windows 7 and later and looks after all your TV show files; making them presentable for Kodi (XBMC), Mede8er, PyTivo and other media hubs.
On the surface TV Rename will “fix” the names of TV shows…
You have a few show episodes saved as video files, they have names like:The.Shannara.Chronicles.S02E03.XviD-AFG.avi
Let’s clean this up, including the season, show and episode details like:
The Shannara Chronicles – S02E03 – Graymark.avi
But wait, there’s more!
Rename files using data from The TVDB and rules you can configure
Monitor specified folders for new TV show filesMedia Library – a folder (or folders) somewhere on your PC or NAS or whatever, with a bunch of TV show files in it (them).
Once TV Rename knows about your Media Library it can: –
Copy (or move) files from monitored folders to your Media Library
Download TV show posters and images and create meta-data automatically
List any missing TV show episodes/seasons in your Media Library
Create web searches to help you find missing TV show files
Tell you how long you’ll have to wait until the next episode of your current favourite TV show airsSe usi più di un client Plex Media Center in casa, a volte può essere difficile identificare quale sia .

Between the Blu-Ray player, cable box, laptop, and everything else hooked up to your TV, your home theater situation is a mess. Here’s how I rolled all those devices into one awesome media center—the media center of my dreams—for under $500.
Update: A lot of you have been asking for an update to this build, so we did a bit of research and found some currently in-production parts that should be very similar to the original build in this guide! We haven’t tested this exact build ourselves, but it should work much the same as the original, and we’ve updated the rest of the guide with a few new suggestions.
What This Media Center Can Do
You can put together a home theater PC using just about anything : an old computer, a cheap nettop, an Apple TV, or even a $35 Raspberry Pi . However, if you really want to get the most out of your HTPC, building it yourself is the way to go.
What Should I Use for My Home Theater PC: Apple TV, Nettop, Old Computer, or Something Else?
Dear Lifehacker, I’m finally in the market to get a home theater PC, and I’m not sure which…
We’ve tried a lot of different builds over the years, but not every build can handle everything you throw at it. This build will allow us to play virtually anything, including:
- All of your ripped or downloaded movies, TV shows, and music
- All of your DVD and Blu-Ray discs
Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime streaming, plus nearly any other streaming channel you can imagine like CBS, NBC, Bravo, MTV, Comedy Central, SyFy, USA, Revision3, TWiT, and many more (Unfortunately Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime are much more difficult than they used to be. See this article for more information.)- Video games from nearly any classic system, as well as some PC games
Part One: Choose Your Hardware
In order for my media center to accomplish everything I wanted, I’ve found that I needed a very specific set of hardware, since a lot of HTPC builds are too low-powered to handle things like video games or even Netflix. This build is powerful enough to handle nearly anything you throw at it, and at a very reasonable price. It won’t necessarily play the latest games on ultra high settings, but you should be able to play them on lower settings pretty easily, and all your streaming video should run like a dream.
I’m looking to find an OS for my NAS and saw this. I installed it to a VM so I can have a look at it. I have successfully installed Plex Media Server, however, I don’t know how to put the movies to where Plex Media Server can scan.
Can anyone help me.

Hmm. The setgid trick only works on the folders and not files. The files still have transmission:transmission but with umask = 2, have 0664 access rights.

. and umask = 18 gives 0644

Having the share set with 3rd party = RO, would only stop an app writing to the share if it was running as an unprivileged user. Many apps run as root. WHich app are you going to have writing to the shares?
If you are cute, just pick up the GID and UID for plex (“id plex”). Then you can probably delete the user and group from the command line and add him as a regular LDAP user. Once added, you can then use the “find” command on the UID and GID to set all the folder and file ownerships correctly. There is no guarantee this would work, but it is how I used to run “transmission” before the app was created, with an LDAP user rather than a Unix user.
Nick
makes sense re apps running with root user that RO will work fine. I was actually going to test this using transmission as I’ve got an identical ‘flexshare’ permission problem with that app also.
I’ll test the deletion of the app created user then creating an identical username with LDAP and report back here soonAccepted Answer

When I set up a plex share I set up a groups first called fs-movies, fs-extras, fs-videos, fs-photos, fs-music, and fs-audiobooks. Then I set up shares in flexshares with the corresponding groups: movies, extras, videos, photos, music, and audiobooks. On all of these shares I enable ‘Third-party access’ so that flexshare (a 3rd party app) can access the shares. I also share these out with the File Server permissions so that I can access them as a mapped network drive through CIFS. Then, in the flex web interface on my I manage may Plex server and browse for these folders under /var/flexshare/shares/*.
is it possible to add the application user ‘plex’ to a ClearOS create account group? Being able to do this would allow the application(s) to access their respective flexshares. I’ve tried below command without any luck. As Nick mentioned, the allusers must be an LDAP group and not a native server group.
Also, I’ve noticed the “Third Party App Access” option is either Disabled or Read Only. Is RO sufficient for an application to write too?
In this video/blog post we’ll look at how to install Plex on OpenMediaVault 5 using Docker and Portainer. We’ll also include the noexec fix while we’re at it to make sure that everything works without issue.
We’re going into this with the understanding that you’ve already setup OpenMediaVault 5 on a device. If you haven’t, go check out my other tutorials on how to do that and come back to this tutorial.
Getting Started
First thing, make sure you have your system up to date with all the latest updates.
Next, head over to omv-extras.org and click on the link for OMV version 5. Then look for the link called “openmediavault-omvextrasorg” and click it. Click the newest version. In my case, it is “5.2.1”. Then click the “Files” tab at the top of the page. Then click “pool”, “main”, and “o”. Next click “openmediavault-omvextrasorg”. On this page, you should see a couple of options. Click the file that ends in “.deb” to download the file.
Go back to your OpenMediaVault installation and click on “Plugins” and then click the “Upload” button on that page. Upload the .deb file you just downloaded. Once that is complete, search for “extras” in the search field at the top of the page.
Check the box next to “openmediavault-omvextrasorg 5.2.1” and click the “Install” button at the top of the page.
Now reboot the system.
Once the system has rebooted, you can log back in. Click the new “OMV-Extras” link in the left sidebar. Click on “Docker” in the blue bar. Then click the dropdown that says “Docker” and click “Install”. Once that has completed, click the “Portainer” dropdown and click “Install”.
Fixing noexec
Now open an SSH program like Putty and login to your server using root.
Then do a search for “mntent”
You should be brought to a section that is a different color because it is commented out. Use your arrow keys to press down until you get to the next section and look for the “ ” line and remove the “noexec” option from that line. Then press CTRL+X and then press Y to confirm.
That will bring you back to the main screen of your Putty program. While you’re there, type this:
omv-salt deploy run fstab
Press Enter on your keyboard. It will look like nothing happened and that’s fine. Now type in:
And then press Enter on your keyboard.
Once the system has rebooted, you can log in to the server via Putty again using root and type in:
Then look for your hard drives (sda1 or sdb1) and make sure there is no “noexec” in any of the lines associated with your hard drives.
Create Shares
You’ll need to go your OpenMediaVault user interface and click “Shared Folders”
Create each of the following:
- Config
- Movies
- TV
- Music
The “Config” folder is the only required folder. You can adjust your media folder names to fit your needs, but these are the defaults.
Make sure the permissions for each of the folders is set to “Everyone: read/write”.
Hover over any of the header titles (Name, Device, Relative Path, etc) and click the dropdown arrow. Then hover over “Columns” and check the box that says “Absolute Path” as we’ll need that later.
Then go to “SMB/CIFS”. Make sure this is set to “Enable” and then go to “Shares” in the blue bar.
Click “Add” for add each of the folders you created a moment ago and make sure the “Public” setting is set to “Only guests”.
Click “Save” after each one and once you have all your folders saved, you can click the “Apply” button in the yellow bar at the top of the page.

Install Plex
Now go back to your OpenMediaVault server and login to the user interface.
Click on “OMV-Extras” and then click “Docker” in the blue bar. Then click the “Portainer” dropdown and click “Open web”.
Tell it that you want to control a local server. Then click on the section that says local.
Click “Containers”. Then click “Add container”
In a separate browser window, open this link:
In the “Create Container” window, fill in each of the fields based on the “docker-compose” information in the linuxserver/plex page.
You’ll need to open Putty again to get your UID and GID.
Under “Volumes” click “map additional volume” 1 time for each of the folders you created. Click the blue “bind” button for each one as well.
For the “Config” folder, you’ll type:
in the “container” field. Then you’ll type the absolute path of that from the “Shared Folders” page on your OpenMediaVault page and append it with /Plex. Mine looks like this with all the folders added:
Next, click the “Network” tab and change the setting from “Bridged” to “Host”.
You’ll move to the “Env” tab next and enter the PUID, PGID, VERSION, and UMASK_SET options. Mine looks like this:
Next, go to the “Restart policy” tab and change it to “Unless stopped”.
That’s it. Now you can click the “Deploy the container” button right above the “Advanced container settings”
Sign Into Plex
Now you will be asked to sign into Plex and claim your server. Do that.
Next you will add your media folders and give each a name for Plex. Once you have done that, you can add users and assign permissions for each user to be able to access whatever folders you want them to be able to access and then you’re done.

Below are steps on how you can rename a file, shortcut, or directory. Click one of the following links to automatically navigate to the correct operating system.
You must have write or modify permissions to a file, folder, or directory to rename it. In some cases, you may need administrator privileges in the operating system to rename.
- Microsoft Windows
- MS-DOS and Windows command line.
- Rename in a batch file.
- macOS
- Linux and Unix.
- Google Chrome OS.
- How to rename a document in Word or Excel.
How to rename in Microsoft Windows
Windows users can rename their files and directories using one of the following methods. We’ve listed the following recommendations in what we believe to be the easiest methods of renaming a file. These methods work for most types of files, including text, photos, documents, and others.
This also works for removing spaces in a file name.
Renaming a folder containing files may cause problems if that folder contains files that are required by a program. For example, if the program is looking for a folder named “data” and you rename it to “other” the program would no longer know where data files are located.
Method one
- Highlight the file or folder.
- Right-click the file with your mouse and select Rename from the menu that appears.
In Windows 11, select Show more options in the right-click menu to see the Rename option.
Method two
- Highlight the file or folder.
- Press the F2 key on the keyboard.
Method three
- Highlight the file or folder.
- Click File at the top of the window and select Rename from the list of available options.
File Explorer in Windows 11 does not have a file menu like previous versions of Windows. Instead, click the Rename icon in the menu bar at the top.
Method four
- Highlight the file or folder.
- Once highlighted, wait a few seconds and click the file name again. A box should appear surrounding the file or folder name, and you can rename the file.
If you don’t wait long enough and click the file or folder too fast, it can open it rather than allowing you to rename it.
Renaming multiple files or folders at once
- Open Explorer.
- In Explorer, select all the files you want to rename.
- How to select or highlight multiple files and folders.
- Once the files are selected, press F2 to edit the file name and type the new name for the files. For example, typing “test” renames the files to test, test(1), test(2), test(3), etc. If you have file extensions displayed, make sure to also type the name of the file extension.
Microsoft Windows users can also rename any file using the Windows command line.
How to rename in MS-DOS and the Windows command line
MS-DOS and Windows command (CMD) line users can change the name of a file or directory using the ren or rename command. Below are examples of how this command can be used. Additional information about each of these commands is found by clicking the command links above.
Renaming a file
The following example renames the file test.txt to hope.txt.
If the test.txt file is not located in your current directory, you must specify the file’s path as a prefix to the file name. For example, if the file is in the “computer” directory, type a command similar to the following example.
Renaming a file with a space
If a file or directory has a space, it must be surrounded with quotes. Otherwise, you get the “The syntax of the command is incorrect” error. To rename the file “computer hope.txt” to “example file.txt“, your command would resemble the following example.
Renaming multiple files with one command
To rename multiple files at once, you must utilize some form of wild character. Below are examples of how this could be done.
The following example renames all the files in the current directory that end with .rtf to .txt files.
In this next example, the command renames a file with an unknown character in the file name to something that can be read. The “?” used in the following example is the wild character for an unknown character.
Renaming a directory
Renaming a directory in MS-DOS is much like renaming a file. Use the ren or rename command to rename the directory. Because you cannot have a file and directory of the same name, you don’t need to worry about mistakenly renaming a file instead of a directory. The only exception is if you’re using wild characters.
Renaming a directory containing files may cause problems if that directory contains files required by a program. For example, if the program is looking for a directory named “data” and you rename it to “other,” the program would no longer know where data files are located.
The following example renames the computer directory to hope.
Rename the directory “computer hope” to “example directory”. Whenever dealing with a file or directory with a space, it must be surrounded with quotes. Otherwise, you get the “The syntax of the command is incorrect” error.
Rename in a batch file
To rename files in a batch file, you can use any of the rename commands or examples shown in the MS-DOS and Windows command line section.
How to rename in macOS
Apple macOS users can rename their files and directories using one of the following methods. We’ve listed the following recommendations in what we believe to be the easiest methods of renaming a file.
First recommendation
In the macOS Finder, select the file by clicking the file once and then press the return key on the keyboard. After pressing return, type the new name of the file.
Second recommendation
Select the file or icon you want to rename. Click and then hover over the file name until it is highlighted. Once highlighted, this indicates the file can be renamed.
Third recommendation
Using the Terminal, you can also rename any file. See our Linux and Unix users section for steps on renaming a file using the mv command.

Summary :
While you’re enjoying the new features after upgrading your system to Windows 10, some people are bemoaning the malfunction of some features. For instance, the Windows Media Center error gets the attention of the public. Here, I’ll show you some useful ways to fix it.
Microsoft removes Windows Media Center from its latest Windows 10 updates; it has left a lot of Windows users angry and disappointed. Because of this, people choose to install a custom version of Windows Media Center and it can be compatible with the new Windows 10.
Media Center Error Appears on Windows 10
Yet, Media Center error appears now and then, bothering the users a lot. As far as I know, there are mainly three types of Media Center errors; they are respectively:
- Windows Media Center decoder error: the video decoder is not working, is not installed, or is not supported. Try installing the codec or restating your computer. Besides, you may try to update the drivers to fix the problem.
- WindowsMedia Center won’t open error: when you click on it, the system prompts that this program cannot open and says it is searching for solutions. Since the system gives no suggestion on how to fix this, you may try the solutions below.
- Windows Media Center not working(stopped working) error: a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. This happens mainly due to third-party applications interfering with Media Center. To remove the problematic applications after a clean boot may fix the problem.
How to Fix Windows Media Center Error on Win10
In this part, I’ll introduce mainly 3 solutions to help you solve the Media Center problems mentioned above.
Solution 1: Perform a Clean Boot
Clean boot means the minimal set of drivers and startup programs. If you start your computer in a clean boot, you are able to find out if there is a background program interfering with your program/game.
How to perform a clean boot in Windows 10:
- Click on the search box located in the taskbar.
- Type msconfig into the textbox.
- Right click on System Configuration (Desktop app).
- Choose Run as administrator from the menu.
- Select the Services
- Check the Hide all Microsoft services option at bottom left.
- Click on the Disable all
- Shift to the Startup
- Click on the Open Task Manager
- Select the first item in Startup tab and click on the Disable
- Repeat step 10 to disable all the items listed.
- Close Task Manager.
- Go back to the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box. Now, click on the OK button to confirm changes.
- Restart your computer.
Solution 2: Run CHKDSK Scan
This is able to fix the Media Center error caused by a damaged hard drive.
- Click on the search box located in the taskbar.
- Type command prompt.
- Right click on Command Prompt (Desktop app).
- Choose Run as administrator from the menu.
- Type chkdsk /f *: (* stands for the system drive letter) and press Enter.
- Press Y to schedule a restart at next reboot.
- Restart your computer.
Solution 3: Rename the EpgListings directory
Here are the steps to rename the EpgListings directory:
- Open File Explorer.
- Navigate to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\eHome\Packages one by one.
- Locate EpgListings
- Click to rename it.
In addition to those solutions, you could also try updating your drivers to the latest version and removing the problematic applications as I have mentioned in the beginning.
If all those methods failed, please don’t worry, you still have a trump card – upgrading your system to the latest version.

Centering things is one of the most difficult aspects of CSS.
The methods themselves usually aren’t difficult to understand. Instead, it’s more due to the fact that there are so many ways to center things.
The method you use can vary depending on the HTML element you’re trying to center, or whether you’re centering it horizontally or vertically.
In this tutorial, we’ll go over how to center different elements horizontally, vertically, and both vertically and horizontally.
How to Center Horizontally
Centering elements horizontally is generally easier than centering them vertically. Here are some common elements you may want to center horizontally and different ways to do it.
How to Center Text with the CSS Text-Align Center Property
To center text or links horizontally, just use the text-align property with the value center :
How to Center a Div with CSS Margin Auto
Use the shorthand margin property with the value 0 auto to center block-level elements like a div horizontally:
How to Center a Div Horizontally with Flexbox
Flexbox is the most modern way to center things on the page, and makes designing responsive layouts much easier than it used to be. However, it’s not fully supported in some legacy browsers like Internet Explorer.
To center an element horizontally with Flexbox, just apply display: flex and justify-content: center to the parent element:
How to Center Vertically
Centering elements vertically without modern methods like Flexbox can be a real chore. Here we’ll go over some of the older methods to center things vertically first, then show you how to do it with Flexbox.
How to Center a Div Vertically with CSS Absolute Positioning and Negative Margins
For a long time this was the go-to way to center things vertically. For this method you must know the height of the element you want to center.
First, set the position property of the parent element to relative .
Then for the child element, set the position property to absolute and top to 50% :
But that really just vertically centers the top edge of the child element.
To truly center the child element, set the margin-top property to -(half the child element’s height) :
How to Center a Div Vertically with Transform and Translate
If you don’t know the height of the element you want to center (or even if you do), this method is a nifty trick.
This method is very similar to the negative margins method above. Set the position property of the parent element to relative .
For the child element, set the position property to absolute and set top to 50% . Now instead of using a negative margin to truly center the child element, just use transform: translate(0, -50%) :
Note that translate(0, -50%) is shorthand for translateX(0) and translateY(-50%) . You could also write transform: translateY(-50%) to center the child element vertically.
How to Center a Div Vertically with Flexbox
Like centering things horizontally, Flexbox makes it super easy to center things vertically.
To center an element vertically, apply display: flex and align-items: center to the parent element:
How to Center Both Vertically and Horizontally
How to Center a Div Vertically and Horizontally with CSS Absolute Positioning and Negative Margins
This is very similar to the method above to center an element vertically. Like last time, you must know the width and height of the element you want to center.
Set the position property of the parent element to relative .
Then set the child’s position property to absolute , top to 50% , and left to 50% . This just centers the top left corner of the child element vertically and horizontally.
To truly center the child element, apply a negative top margin set to half the child element’s height, and a negative left margin set to half the child element’s width:
How to Center a Div Vertically and Horizontally with Transform and Translate
Use this method to center an element vertically and horizontally if you don’t know its exact dimensions and can’t use Flexbox.
First, set the position property of the parent element to relative .
Next, set the child element’s position property to absolute , top to 50% , and left to 50% .
Finally, use transform: translate(-50%, -50%) to truly center the child element:
How to Center a Div Vertically and Horizontally with Flexbox
Flexbox is the easiest way to center an element both vertically and horizontally.
This is really just a combination of the two previous Flexbox methods. To center the child element(s) horizontally and vertically, apply justify-content: center and align-items: center to the parent element:
That’s everything you need to know to center with the best of ’em. Now go forth and center all the things.
You can move your iTunes library to a different folder, computer, or drive. Here’s how to do it, even in macOS Catalina, which ditches iTunes for the Music app.
Moving your iTunes library sounds complicated, especially if you have a vast collection of music, TV shows, movies, and podcasts. But it’s possible—if you follow the right steps.
Below we’ll cover how to move your library to a NAS device or network drive as well as a PC. Since iTunes has been replaced in macOS Catalina, we’ll also look at how to do it with Apple’s new Music app.
Locate iTunes Media
When you install and set up iTunes for the first time, the software automatically chooses a location to house your library. By default, that location is C:\users\[username]\ Music\iTunes. That folder stores the iTunes library file, which is a database of all your iTunes content, along with other files.
Your content itself is saved in the folder iTunes Media, which contains subfolders for your music, movies, TV shows, books, and other items. Confirm the location for your iTunes content by opening iTunes and navigating to Edit > Preferences > Advanced in Windows and iTunes > Preferences > Advanced on a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier. The location of your iTunes Media folder is displayed.
Move Your iTunes Library to a Network Drive
Why go through the trouble of moving your library to a network drive or NAS device? Well, a computer that houses your iTunes library needs to be turned on any time you want to access the content from a different device.
By moving your library to a network drive that’s always available, you or anyone else in your household can access the content from any computer or mobile device in your home at any time.
If you have a network drive or NAS set up, use the software for your router or NAS to create a specific network share to store your iTunes library. Name it something like iTunesContent, then open File Explorer in Windows or Finder in macOS.
Map a drive to this new network share, maybe assigning the letter “I” to iTunesContent. Finally, create a folder on your new network share called iTunes. Then, open your new iTunes folder and create a subfolder called iTunes Media.
Transfer the Folders
iTunes Media Folder
Open iTunes, then click the Edit Menu (or the iTunes menu on a Mac) and select Preferences > Advanced. Click the Change button for your iTunes Media folder location, then navigate to and select the iTunes Media folder on your network share.
The location should say: I:\iTunes\iTunes Media (assuming you used “I” as the drive letter for mapping). Then check the two options for “Keep iTunes Media folder organized” and “Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.” Click OK to close the Preferences window.
Move and Rename
Add Folder to Library
Select Subfolders
Hurry Up and Wait
Did the Files Transfer?
Rename iTunes Folder
Rename the iTunes folder on your computer to something like iTunes-old. Hold down the Shift key and reopen iTunes from its shortcut. A message pops up asking you to choose the iTunes library.
Click the “Choose Library” button. In the Open iTunes Library window, navigate to and select the iTunes Library.itl file in the iTunes folder on your network and then click the Open button.
Test Your Handiwork
iTunes opens and should display the content from your music folder or whatever folder you last accessed. Select the other types of content from the menu, such as movies, TV shows, and books, to make sure the thumbnail images for those items display in iTunes. You should also try playing some music, movies, or TV shows to ensure that they play properly.
When you’re satisfied that all your content files now reside on the network and that iTunes is pointing to them, you can delete the old iTunes folder on your computer. From now on, any time you open iTunes, the software will access your files from the network.
Move Your iTunes Library to Another Computer
Copy Your Files Via a HomeGroup
If you’re a Windows 7 or 8.1 holdout, you can transfer files from one computer to another through HomeGroup. Once both computers are linked, open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Users\[username]\Music folder. Select and copy the iTunes folder, then click the entry for HomeGroup, the entry for your username, and the entry for the target computer.
You should see all the shared folders of the target computer, including the Music folder. Open the Music folder and paste the iTunes folder from the source to the target PC. Take a nice, long break as the copy is likely to take awhile.
Copy Files With External Devices
HomeGroup is not available in Windows 10, so those with that OS (and Mac users) will have to find an alternative method to copy files between two different machines. You can copy them from the source PC to an external device, then copy them over to the target computer. Another option is to use a USB cable to connect both computers and copy the files over. If your library isn’t too large, you can always copy it to and from an online file storage site such as Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, Dropbox, or Box.
Authorize This Computer
Test Your Handiwork
Move Your Library in Catalina
Moving your library on a Mac that’s running macOS Catalina is a different process, mainly because iTunes has been retired as the default application for storing and organizing media. As such, your content is stored in different locations. The default locations are as follows:
- Music:C:/users/[username]/music
- TV Shows and Movies:C:/users/[username]/movies
- Podcasts:C:/Library/Group Containers/243LU875E5.groups.com.apple.podcasts
- eBooks and Audiobooks:C:/Library/Containers/ Data/Documents/iBooks/Books.
You can move your music, TV shows, and movies from their default folders to a new location on a network drive or to another Mac. To do this, follow the same steps above as described for iTunes.
Accessing Podcasts on macOS Catalina
Accessing Books on macOS Catalina
For books, open the Books app on your new Mac; it should display any books you’ve purchased through iTunes. You can then download individual books to your computer.
To add other books you’ve obtained elsewhere, copy your entire Books folder (and Audiobooks folder if it’s separate) from your old Mac to an accessible location for your new Mac.
Open the Books app and click File > Add to Library, then select your Books and Audiobooks folders. Click Add and your books should be imported into your new library.

Q. Is there an app that lets me change the file names on a bunch of digital photos at once so I can upload them to an online album with more informative names than DSC01970.jpg., DSC01971.jpg and so on?
A. Photo programs often include commands to rename files when you export them for uploading or sharing. For example, the Photos app that Apple includes with the Mac operating system gives you the opportunity to save a batch of pictures with a keyword and a number (like Graduation – 1.jpg, Graduation – 2.jpg and onward) in the Export dialogue box when you choose Sequential in the File Name menu.
The free Adobe Bridge photo-organizer program for Windows and Mac can also rename photos in batches. Third-party utilities for renaming images in bulk can be found online as well with a quick search, but you may not need extra software for simple batch jobs.
To rename a folder of loose photos all at once on a Windows computer, open that folder and select all the images inside it. Right-click the selected group, choose Rename from the menu and enter a descriptive keyword for one of the selected files. Press the Enter key to change all the pictures at once to that name followed by a sequential number.
The process works much the same way on a Mac. Open a folder of photos, select the ones you want to rename, right-click (or hold down the Control key and click) the group and choose Rename [Number] Items from the contextual menu. Supply a keyword, and the Mac will rename the files and tack on a number in sequence.
Not to knock Plex itself. The server/encoding/play-on-any-device pipeline is amazing.
Just saying that their UIs need developers who actually care about what their users want.
I suppose their server software isn’t … I’m not sure.
Just now i browsed through a thread where a user was complaining about about the UI being atrociously lacking of options and how it slows down people.
A plex employee said:
this has kind of always been the Plex way, hasn’t it? If you want powerful customization and configuration you use XBMC/kodi, and if you want a pre-configured player that just works with as little config as possible you use Plex. It’s never been a very customizable player.
They did what now? I’ve been using Plex on my home server and all of my mobile and TV devices and I haven’t had it “forced” on me at all. Everything works great. Typically. Until I have to restart FireTV every few days because it stops playing audio from Plex for some odd reason.
I gave up and now running kodi on raspberrypi
we removed the plex pass requirement for smart TVs a few days ago, they are all free to all users. But as someone that works with smart TVs many hours a day, I would stay with rpi, it’s a much much better platform, can direct play more formats without need for transcoding and in general more stable.
Just running some Amazon Fire TVs with XBMC/Kody at home, all hooked into my NAS. Next step is going to be building a shared SQL database so all the media positions are lined up.
Although I also enjoy the ability to share my server with family and keep a separate kid-friendly profile for my daughter.
Anyways, I could do with a simple soup to nuts spec sheet and less marketing fluff.
Not trying to be a dick, just always interested in how other people handle media and what works best for them. I am VERY familiar with software not interested in dealing with the particular way that I store things.
You can subsequently choose to view files by “folder”, which doesn’t actually browse the filesystem directly but instead looks at the database to see where the file came from originally. My experience trying several times since Plex came out (most recently last year) is that this is extremely unreliable and wonky. It’d always mis-recognize files or they’d be completely missing even though they were on disk. They outright do not support directly browsing files AFAIK.
So in other words, if your files are reasonably well organized and named following one of the conventions recognized by Plex then it does a pretty amazing job organizing and scraping. On the other hand, if you just have random files that are scattered about or organized by folder or perhaps named differently then Kodi works a whole lot better because it just lets you drill through files on disk (it has a library too, which is functionally about the same as Plex and suffers from similar drawbacks). On the other hand, Plex has way better device support and while you can get transcoding to/from devices in Kodi, Plex is a lot better at it most of the time.
It looks like the Movies screen will automatically offer up unwatched movies with recent release dates, as well as groups of unwatched movies from the same director (“Top movies by . “). If you actually go into a movie and open the Extras menu, along with trailers/features (if you have a Plex Pass), it’ll show you other movies by the same director and with the same lead actors.
Similarly, the TV screen has groups for recently aired TV episodes, and even has shows grouped by the channel they’re currently airing on (!).
It’s a neat use of metadata, and it would be interesting to see it go further. It would be really neat if I could, say, choose Star Trek TNG and get an automatically generated list of the best 10 episodes (with data pulled from thetvdb, IMDB, etc), or if I could go into Movies and choose an option to group movies by randomized Netflix-like specialized genres.
I got fed up yesterday and realized I could use a raspberry pi w/ instead, and it’s been working great. I use my phone as the remote – and so far so good.
Edit: I should of noted that using Prime Video from the Fire Stick works perfectly (and it’s faster to fast-forward etc than the roku).
If all you want to do is watch videos from Plex then no, there’s no point changing hardware. But you’d be surprised how much you end up doing through the TV when you can.
It’s a bit of the feeling of having a second (big) monitor hooked up to your computer (or using Apple’s AirPlay “extend display to this monitor” mode in OSX) but having the two be separate computers is actually a good thing, frequently:
• I don’t have to worry about having something CPU-demanding (like a streaming Flash player in Chrome) running on the TV while trying to compile on my work laptop; neither one will cause choppiness in the other.
• I run all my torrents on the HTPC (because that’s where I want to play the videos from anyway) and have QoS enabled on my router, so my laptop’s network connection is never clogged.
There’s also the benefit of the pixels of a TV being far-enough away that you can get away with a lot of scaling. Presuming a 60″ 1080p LCD at an 8′ distance, turning on Windows’ “Extra Large” DPI Scaling, or force-enabling OSX’s HiDPI mode, looks really good (e.g. ).
You only get 960×540 effective pixels from a 200%-DPI-scaled 1080p TV, so some things might not fit on the screen and will necessitate temporarily toggling back to “regular” 1080p. Also, you’ll probably want to full-screen most apps, to get something like this (). It’s a lot like using a netbook.
It’s pretty great for reading long articles in particular; I find there’s less eye-strain than looking at my laptop—maybe because the glyphs are so clear, and maybe also because I’m focusing on something farther than 2′ away.
It’s not fancy, but it does the job well – barring some signal issues that I think must be specific to my apartment, as I haven’t seen anyone else complain of them.
