Super Mario Run is a really simple game, until you try to complete all if the extra coin challenges—all of a sudden those easy levels become tough when you’re trying to get all the pink, purple, or black coins instead of just running through.
If you miss a jump early in the level, you’ve got to do the whole thing over again, which means you need to die three times to start from the beginning of the level. Or, if you want to do it the easier way, there is an option to restart the level—it’s just a little hidden.
First, tap the Pause button. And then tap Retry. Did you already know it was there? I didn’t notice it until after my first playthrough.
You’ll be asked to confirm, and then the level will restart.
Now if there was just an easier way to get those black coins…

The popular new Super Mario Run game by Nintendo doesn’t have a whole lot of levels to play, but if you ever get to the point where you want to just delete all your in-game progress and start all over again, then you’ll be happy to know there’s a way to do that.
In this tutorial, we’ll show you how you can delete all your Super Mario Run game progress data without having to delete the game from your device and re-download it later on.
Deleting all Super Mario Run game progress
Rather than wasting your time deleting and re-downloading the Super Mario Run game, and possibly even wasting valuable cellular data to re-download the game if you’re nowhere near a Wi-Fi network, utilizing the game’s built-in progress deletion feature can save oodles of time and will still allow you to start fresh with a clean slate.
After you delete your Super Mario Run progress data, it will be as if you just downloaded the game and are starting over from scratch. Nintendo says that the following information gets deleted when you perform this task:
- All of the coins you’ve collected throughout all of your levels
- All of the course records you’ve set while playing through the game
- Any purchased content you’ve bought via in-app purchase
- Any other information pertaining to who you are as a player will have to be reconfigured
It’s worth noting that while your in-app purchase might be reset afterwards in Super Mario Run, you won’t have to re-purchase it again in the future. A feature in the app lets you restore your purchase if you’ve already bought it before, so don’t worry about being charged a second time for unlocking the in-app purchase you bought previously.
You should also keep in mind that this will not delete your Nintendo account, but it will disassociate all of your game data from your Nintendo account, so there’s no way to reverse this action. You have been warned.
How to do it
Now that you know what deleting your Super Mario Run progress data is going to do, these are the steps to go through with it:
1) Launch the Super Mario Run game from your Home screen.
2) Touch the screen to begin the game when prompted.
3) Once you’re at the main page, tap on the Menu button.
4) Tap on the Settings buttons that appears.
5) From the new menu, tap on the About This App button.
6) Next, tap on the Delete User Data button.
7) Tap on the green OK button.
8) Read the warning, then confirm you want to delete your data by tapping on the red Delete button.
Your app will now be reset back to how it was when you first downloaded it.
You will need to restore any in-app purchases you made, sign in with your Nintendo account, and start over from level 1 with none of the saved progress you had prior to following this tutorial.
That’s all there is to it – happy gaming Mario fans!

Share All sharing options for: How to master Super Mario Run: 13 quick and easy tips
Super Mario Run, Nintendo’s first true smartphone game, arrives today on iOS. It’s a little different than your typical Mario fanfare, which typically send the mustachioed plumber out on a grand adventure. Instead, the game has three modes — which you can test out for free — for players to sink their time into.
The game does include in-game purchases with coin currency and a one-time fee of $9.99 to unlock its full features, and it will require an active internet connection to play. To help you make the most of your mobile Mario time, we’ve compiled our best tips and tricks.
World Tour Mode
World Tour Mode is a mashup of classic side-scrolling Mario gameplay and auto runner. Mario is set to automatically dash through levels while the player controls his jumps to grab coins, dodge, or smoosh foes to death under his mighty boot. You’ll want to scoop up all the coins you can, but your ultimate goal is to reach the flagpole at the end of each level.
Master your jumps: The style of your jump is important to leapfrogging enemies or collecting every coin you come across. A quick press will grant you short jump, but if you press and hold, you can achieve greater heights.
The character select screen
Be on the lookout for Pause blocks: Occasionally you’ll come across red blocks with a “pause” symbol on them; if Mario stands on them, he’ll stop his run. Make sure to use these when you can. It’s great for a break, but more importantly, the extra time will help you figure out which path to take — and how to avoid enemies.
Replay: Each level has different paths to take. If you want to find everything the game has to offer, return to levels you’ve already cleared.
. And explore: Super Mario Run has its fair share of linear levels, but it’s worth taking the time to dig around each level for hidden coins or items. Exploration is crucial if you plan to replay the game after completing the 24 stages.
Try new characters: Don’t play favorites when it comes to your runner. Characters like Peach or Yoshi have different jump styles that can prove useful when you’re trying to reach new areas that Mario just can’t crack.
Sync your My Nintendo account: If you’re part of Nintendo’s “My Nintendo” rewards program, take the time to add Super Mario Run. Aside from its usual point offering, it’ll also help you unlock Toad as a playable character.
Toad Rally
Toad Rally, in which you face off against performance data set by other players, is as close to multiplayer as Super Mario Run gets. So, although it’s not a competition happening in real time, you’re still trying to beat someone else’s score.
You can see a rainbow of screens at the top of this screen
Take note of color: When you’re picking your opponent, pay attention to the color of the toads displayed by their username. In-game, toads are like a form of currency — you need different-colored toads to buy specific things. If you need a yellow toad, for example, look for opponents offering that color.
Pick your foes carefully: It’s good to have goals, but if you’re not confident you can beat someone, consider a new opponent. Losing a round in Toad Rally will actually dock your Toad totals. Please, think of your toads.
Mix up your jumps: Toad Rush tallies your score according to your coin collection and how far you get, but it also takes your overall performance into account. Add style to your run by mixing up your moves with wall jumps or hopping over enemies.
. But don’t sacrifice your coins: Coins are a huge boon to your final score. If you grab enough of them, you can also trigger a “coin rush” mode, which lets you earn a lot of coins in a very short amount of time.
Don’t die: No, but, really. I know you’re gonna get impatient at some point and try to pull off a crazy move, but put more value into each life. Dying will significantly drop your score, slow you down, and reset your coin rush meter.
Kingdom Builder
As its name implies, the Kingdom Builder mode lets you create your very own mushroom kingdom. This is where you’ll want to bring your coins and collected toads.
Focus on special houses: I get it. You’re probably going to want to buy decorations for your kingdom. Hold off and save your toads for houses dedicated to characters like Luigi, Yoshi, and Toadette in order to unlock them.
Check back regularly: The multi-colored “bonus game” houses let you play minigames, which regenerate over time. So make sure to check back at least once a day to maximize your payout.
Want to know some helpful tips to playing Super Mario Run? There are a couple of things you might find helpful when playing Super Mario Run. Check it out!
How to jump like a boss
Want to get as many coins, Challenge Coins, and power-ups as possible? You need to know how to jump.
Mini-jump: This happens automatically, and allows Mario to avoid small obstacles.
Normal jump: Tap on the screen.
High jump: Tap and hold on the screen.
Spin jump: Tap, hold, then tap again to make Mario spin and stall in mid-air for greater hang time.
Flip jump: Tap when Mario is about to fall onto a platform edge to flip down.
Wall (reverse) jump: Tap when Mario either hits a wall or grabs onto an edge to rebound off that edge backwards. This is a great jump if you want to grab coins both above and below you!
Advanced jumping tricks
- Time your jumps to hit multiple blocks at once – If you time your jumps right, you can smash multiple blocks — and gain multiple power-ups!
- A mid-air stall can make all the difference – Sometimes, a well timed jump just isn’t good enough. You can actually perform a special move that will pause you in mid-air and move you backward just a step. It’s called a mid-air stall and to perform it, touch the screen to high-jump, and then swipe to the left while in mid-air.
- Do a spin jump to grab the flag – The best way to grab the flag at the end of a level is to do a mid-air spin. It gives you just that right amount of leverage to soar straight to the top. Touch and hold the screen to perform a high-jump, and then tap the screen again while in mid-air to spin.
- Find the Super Star to get the Challenge Coin on level 1-1 – If you’re having trouble reaching the last pink Challenge Coin on the first level, hit the lone brick that’s above the question mark block (jump onto the block, and then jump off of it to hit the bricks) to get the Super Star. The Super Star gives you invincibility, and also draws coins toward you. So, when you get near the last Challenge Coin, it will be easier to reach!
- Bubble to rewind – You’ll pop into a bubble when you die, but you can also tap the Bubble button at the top of the screen at any time to rewind the level. Miss out on a Challenge Coin? You can bubble back and make the magic happen. Just remember that you won’t get any extra time on the clock, so hurry!
- Tap a bubble to get the second purple Challenge Coin on level 1-1 – That second purple coin on the first level of the first world is a doozy. To get it, hit the first ? block to grab the extra bubble. Then, tap the bubble icon at the top of the screen to rewind. Tap the screen to pop the bubble when you are on top of the tiered blocks. Jump on top of the second tier if you’re not already on it. Then jump up to grab that purple Challenge Coin!
- Dying isn’t necessarily a bad thing – You lose a couple of coins when you die, but it can also put you back at the very beginning of the level without resetting the content. So, if you want to go back and get more coins or try to defeat that Koopa Paratroopa that keeps eluding you, you can do so with little repercussion. Just remember that you might run out of time, so don’t dawdle.
Let the level show you the way
Use the arrows to guide you to more coins – When you see an arrow, prepare to follow it’s direction. It will oftentimes lead you to new heights and more coins (and maybe even a hidden Challenge Coin).

Earlier this year we took a look at Pokemon Go and the experience for disabled users. With the release of Super Mario Run, we thought this Japanese mascot also deserved a review from the perspective of a disabled user.
Since Super Mario Run doesn’t require walking and exploring like Pokemon does, and there are no complicated controls (just tap to jump), maybe it is easier for people with disabilities? Maybe its fast pace makes it harder? We asked Lilia Kamata, daughter of writer Suzanne Kamata (Check out her books on Amazon!), to try it out on her iPhone and tell us what she thinks!
Hi Lilia! First, can you tell us about your disability?
I am deaf and I use a wheelchair because I can’t walk (due to cerebral palsy).
Do you play games often? If so, what?
Yes! I like Naruto games, for example “Thousand Memories.”
Do you like Mario?
Was the game easy to start right away?
(Mother’s note: Lilia seemed to skip reading the text and go straight to playing the game.)
Is the menu easy to use?
What is the game like? Is it fun?
The avatar runs and fights. Each session lasts one minute. It’s fun to make Mario jump.
What do you think is easy?
You can play with just one finger.
What did you think was hard?
(Mother pounds on floor, trying to distract Lilia from the game so that she will finish answering the questions.) Nothing is particularly difficult. It’s hard to buy because it’s expensive. (Mother’s note: Lilia’s allowance is 2,000 yen/month.)
How many stars out of 5 would you give it?
Thanks!
Lilia seemed to really enjoy it!
For those with spasms and poorer motor control, the need to have precise timing may prove frustrating, especially in later levels. However, unlike normal Super Mario games, Super Mario Run is much kinder on players. In a level, most land-based enemies are automatically jumped-over, which lowers the threat of frequently dying. Additionally, if you do happen to die during a level, Mario floats slowly backwards in a bubble until the player releases him to continue. If you manage to die three times in the level, you simply return to the level select screen and can keep trying without fear of a game over.
Nintendo focused on a simple system of control for Super Mario Run and succeeded. Not only does it help bring in casual gamers, it make the game easier to play for people with disabilities.
Suzanne and Lilia live in Tokushima, Japan. Suzanne’s newest book, A Girls’ Guide to Islands, a memoir of their travels on the Inland Sea, is out early next year! Pre-order here: A Girls’ Guide to the Islands
Here’s how to download and install Super Mario Run version 1.1.2 hack with all levels unlocked on your iPhone or iPod touch device.
If you have been looking for a way to download and play Super Mario Run for iOS without having to be pestered by those in-app purchase alerts, then the modified version of 1.1.2 of the game is probably something that you want to get in on. We have previously posted another method on this too but if that one sounded too difficult to get around with, this one is much easier.
Thankfully, as is usually the case, we have a quick step-by-step guide on exactly how to get modified version 1.1.2 of Super Mario Run onto your non-jailbroken device. Here’s how to go about installing it.
Step 1: Let’s be honest here, you can’t go about installing the hacked, or modified, version of Nintendo’s Super Mario Run if you don’t actually have possession of the modified game file. Makes perfect sense, right? So, with that in mind, your first port of call is to grab the modified Super Mario Run IPA file from here.
Step 2: You now have possession and ownership of that modified IPA file. Make sure you keep it safe and protect it. The next step is to actually get that IPA file installed onto your iOS device. Depending on whether you have a Windows PC or a Mac, you may want to approach it slightly differently. For those with a Windows PC, you will need to use Cydia Impactor, whereas if you own a Mac, sideloading with Xcode is official and recommended method. Both methods are outlined below in our guides here:
Step 3: We’re nearly there. The file has been downloaded. The downloaded file has been sideloaded onto your device. You can see the Super Mario Run icon and are within touching distance of enjoying the whole experience. Trying to launch the game right now would prompt an Untrusted Developer error. To fix this, launch Settings on the device, then tap on General and then Profiles & Device Management. On some iOS versions, this would be General > Profile(s).
Step 4: Locate the Super Mario Run certification and profile. Tap on it and make sure to tap Verify (Trust) in order to force the iOS platform to treat the app as being signed by a legitimate source.
Step 5: That’s it! You can now exit the Settings app and launch the installed Super Mario Run game.
The game should now launch successfully and give you instant access to the full version with all levels and items unlocked, as can be seen in the screenshot above. Enjoy!

Here’s a neat little Super Mario Run hack of sorts to unlock all levels in the game for free, and that too, legally.
Nintendo recently released Super Mario Run for iPhone and iPad, and the game is proving hugely popular amongst gamers, just as you might expect for a game with the word “Mario” in the title. What makes the game interesting for App Store observers is its free-to-play business model, with Super Mario Run free to download and play first two to three levels, with gamers having to pay $9.99 in order to unlock the vast majority of levels within the game.
It’s a model that has become commonplace in the App Store, but it’s still interesting to see a company the size of Nintendo follow suit. Of course, if you really want to play the full game with all levels, you need to make that purchase, and at $9.99, it’s just enough to make some people think twice.
But what if there was a way to get the game, in its entirety, for free? As it turns out, there is.
You may have heard of Cash For Apps before, and that might even be because we already outlined the steps required to take part here: How To Get A Free $10 iTunes Gift Card. The gist of it is rather simple. Users create an account and then complete tasks in order to receive in-app points. These tasks usually amount to downloading, installing and then launching an app or game, and that’s generally all that is required to receive between 100 and 200 points. Those points then turn into something useful, like an iTunes gift card.
A $10 iTunes gift card is 3000 points, for example, so once that figure is achieved, the points can be redeemed for a code that can then be plugged into iTunes or the App Store, crediting the $10, which can immediately be used to buy Super Mario Run’s in-app purchase. The points can of course be used for other gift cards, such as those used by Steam, and the iTunes cards can be used for anything that’s purchasable within the iTunes ecosystem – music, movies, apps etc.
If you have some spare time on your hands and fancy getting something for nothing, this is one route you could go down to get full version of Super Mario Run with all levels unlocked for free. Why not check it out?

This page contains tips, tricks, and strategies for Super Mario Run that are either poorly explained or not detailed at all in the game’s tutorials.
Tip: Use Your Bubble
Bubbles aren’t just used as “lives,” to reset you when you take too much damage or fail to land a long jump – they can be used to reset your position at your convenience, meaning that if you miss a Special Coin or specific ‘?’ box, you can use a bubble to backtrack and claim your prize.
Special Coins
You can earn two rally tickets each time you collect all the Special Coins in a stage. There are three tiers of difficulty to each stage, the easiest featuring Pink Coins, the second having Purple ones and the hardest version of each stage has Black Coins.
Each special coin will also increase your overall coin total at the end of a stage by 10.
Tip: Choose Your Difficulty
If you want to replay a stage after completing multiple sets of Special Coins, you can select the difficulty you want to replay by tapping on the color coin corresponding to the difficulty level you wish to play.
Infinite Scroll
In Rally mode, if you should prove fast enough to reach the end of a stage before the timer expires, the world will loop back to the beginning and you will continue your run indefinitely.
Tip: Get Free Coins From Enemies
You may notice at the end of each level you receive a tally of how many of each enemy type you’ve eliminated. If you manage to fill the entire progress bar, you will “Level Up” that enemy group, and receive an additional coin each time you kill one of those enemies.
Tax Collector
You can also collect free coins from the Mushroom People in your Kingdom. Keep your eyes peeled for Toads hanging around your village holding up coins for you collect.
Tip: Time is a Myth
Well, not really. It’s more of an abstract construct BUT you should know that you aren’t being judged or scored based on how much time you take to complete a World Tour stage.
Drop the Hammer
In Kingdom Builder mode, you can clear out Thwomps blocking construction by using hammers collected in World Tour and Rally mode. Hammers are earned by completing Worlds and defeating bosses.
Tip: Unlock Bonus Characters
Mario isn’t the only character you can use to tackle each level with – you can also unlock Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi and Toadette. They can be unlocked in a variety of ways, and some require you to purchase items for your Kingdom with coins you’ve earned.
| Unlockable Characters | ||
| Character | Requirement | Cost |
| Peach | Complete World Tour | N/A |
| Toad | Unlock in My Nintendo | N/A |
| Luigi | 150 G / 150 P Toads | 500 Coins (?) |
| Yoshi | 30 G / 30 Y Toads | 500 Coins (?) |
| Toadette | 200 of All Toad Types | 1000 Coins (?) |
Style and Speed
When racing in Rally Mode, you’ll earn additional Mushroom People followers by performing more impressive or stylistic moves, such as chaining enemy takedowns or wall jumps.
Rainbow Bridges
In Kingdom Builder, you can expand your village to multiple screens by purchasing and building Rainbow Bridges. You can have up to five screens worth of Kingdom, and each bridge costs slightly more to create.
Secret World
If you obtain every Pink, Purple, or Black Coin in Super Mario Run, you will be able to purchase a special pipe for each of the colored coins that lead to bonus stages. There is a total of 360 coins in the game. There are 120 Pink, 120, Purple, and 120 Black Coins.
As is the case with most Mario games, Nintendo’s Super Mario Run has a load of secret content in each level. The clearest evidence of this is in the game’s use of secret coins, which are differently colored coins scattered across the map in typically out of the way (or hidden from sight) places. Super Mario Run keeps track of your collection of all these coins, and if you collect the full batch, the game will unlock another set of coins that are even harder to find. Earn these and you’ve demonstrated complete mastery over that level. While this guide doesn’t go through the coin locations of specific levels (those will be coming soon), this guide will lay the foundation for any player looking to find coins with some general tips and tricks.
Don’t Look on the First Run
This may or may not seem obvious, but when you’re going through a level for the first time, I highly recommend that you don’t go in with the priority of finding all the secret coins. Instead, I’d recommend that you go through the first run on a level with the express purpose of making it out alive. In fact, if you’re looking to achieve true mastery of a map, this is how I’d recommend you do it.
- Step 1: Play the level to complete it.
- Step 2: Play the level to streamline completion.
- Step 3: Play the level to discover all the coin locations.
- Step 4: Play the level to earn all the coins.
So, once you’ve played the level a first time, I’d play it again with the purpose of learning the most efficient way to complete a level. At this point, the goal isn’t necessarily to locate or earn the secret coins, but it’s to take a longer look at all the different ways to complete the level. This is also a good time to start surveying some of the hidden nooks and crannies which may lead to secret coins.
Once you’ve done that, now you start playing the level to identify (and possibly earn) the secret coins. Start taking unique risks in the areas of the level that look like they may have a secret coin. If you see one out of reach, start thinking about the surrounding environment and how you can use it to capture that coin. You may be able to earn some of the coins on this run, but the goal is still surveying at this point.
By the time you’re on your fourth run, you should have an understanding of all the elements of the level, where the coins are, and how to reach them. Use this playthrough to just capture them all and master the level. Some folks might complain that four runs of a level is a bit too excessive to find all the coins, but they have to remember that Super Mario Run rarely stops, so you’re going to go through levels at a fairly quick pace, which will make it hard for you to identify and adjust what you’re doing to find those secret coins. By playing through it a few times with specific goals in mind, you’ll be able to get to the point where you can make those adjustments with ease to find those coins.
Once you get the first batch complete and the second batch opens up, I’d recommend repeating Steps 3 and 4, above. In fact, you may need to repeat Step 3 a few times depending on how crazy the level is.
Follow the Cues
This tip basically works for anything you’re trying to accomplish in Super Mario Run, but it’s even more important when it comes to the secret coins. Throughout each level, Super Mario Run will throw tips at you in the form of coins that seem to lead to an area or arrows or special blocks that indicate something. Sometimes these lead to easiest paths to complete the level, sometimes they lead to more coins or cool moves to perform (for Toad Rally), and sometimes they lead to secret coins. It’s this last reason that I recommend you should follow the cues, at least for the first run or two and see if they lead to a coin. It’s highly possible they don’t and if so, just note it and move on. However, more often than not, they will most likely lead to a secret coin.
Once you get to the second batch of coins, the cues become far more nuanced. The game expects you to have mastered the level and the coin placement will indicate that. If you followed a complicated cue and got nothing in first batch, try again with the second batch to see if that’s a new reward.
Master the Controls
While this is obvious in the scheme of finding coins, it goes without saying that you’ll need to master ever move in Mario’s arsenal in order to get these. You’ll find coins fairly early on in the game that require you to master wall slider and jumping to just before you plummet to your death. You’ll have to time your jumps perfectly to climb up platforms that you can’t otherwise reach. You’ll need to learn how to jump backwards with directional blocks or hit the long jump with their special blocks. These are all things that require practice so if you see a coin that requires one, and you just can’t quite figure it out, find an earlier level with that element and practice until you’re comfortable.
Watch Replays
I personally advocate people discovering and earning coins on their own, but hey if all else fails you can always find a video online of someone doing it. Obviously, you may not find them right away at launch, but they’ll eventually propagate. It’s probably best to just go through the levels for fun at first and then move into the secret coin collection once you’ve become familiar with the gameplay mechanics.
Well that about covers it. Do you have any specific tips or tricks for earning those elusive coins? If so, leave them in the comments.

About Super Mario Run MOD APK
Super Mario Run is one of Nintendo’s newest and best Android games. If you want to enjoy the magic of Mario on your phone (without having to buy a Switch or an older console), Super Mario run is the way forwards! Unlike classic Mario games, this one is much easier to play, as you only need to tap with one finger as your character keeps running in one direction. There’s nothing to worry about but focusing on the tracks!
Each level has been uniquely crafted by the team over at Nintendo, designed to create that iconic Mario feel on a platform you can put in your pocket. Expect the same music, classic level design, and challenging platform puzzles as you’d find anywhere else. With over 1.5 million downloads on the store, this game has everything fans of Nintendo enjoy, and more!
How does Super Mario Run Work?
You don’t need a fancy controller for your Android phone for Super Mario Run to work well on mobile. Using the game mechanic known as ‘Endless Running’, which is a bit like Temple Run, Super Mario Run only requires one finger to play. As you run you’ll need to pull off plenty of well-timed tricks, from backflips to midair spins. These skills are what separate a noob from a pro player in Super Mario Run!
The Different Game Modes Available
There are four modes available in Super Mario Run: Toad Rally, Remix 10, Kingdom builder and World Tour. Try these all before you purchase the full version of the game or download this Super Mario Run APK mod. The four different game modes keep the game fresh as you play and unlock new levels, although the goal is almost always the same. Rescue the Princess from Bowser’s evil claws!
The First Mode: World Tour
World Tour is the introduction to Super Mario Run. There are 24 different action-packed courses which gives you a great insight into how the game works, and also prepares you for the more difficult levels later on. This is classic Mario gameplay – you can collect 3 types of colored coins by competing with your friends on a leaderboard, and these courses are available for free.
Remix 10
These are Mario courses designed for mobile play. How? They’re much shorter than usual. This means players can pick up and go even when they only have a few moments to spare. There are 10 short courses which you race through one after another, competing against your friends and on the global leaderboard. Got what it takes to blast your way through these levels? They change each time, so stay alert.
Toad Rally
Toad Rally is the challenge mode of Super Mario Run. This is where you really get to flex your Mario style, pulling off trick moves, collecting coins, and acing your personal best time. There’s a huge crowd of Toads watching and your success depends on how happy they are with your performance. Got what it takes to impress them all?
Kingdom Builder
A bit like Paper Mario Maker, Kingdom Builder lets you build your own courses. There are 100s of different items in the mode and you can create totally custom levels for you and your friends. As you impress more Toads (in Toads Rally) you’ll unlock new pieces of kit for your level design, whether it’s functional blocks or colorful decorations.

What is Super Mario Flash 2?
If you don’t have a Gameboy available to play on, worry not, since you can play games like Super Mario Flash 2 on our website, which are games that take what you loved about the original video games, and makes them available on browsers, where you can play them in flash, just like this awesome new one.
Start by picking if you want to be Mario or Luigi, and know that you move using the arrow keys, and press the spacebar to select items. This is going to be basically like Mario Forever, only online, and you get to re-visit all of the amazing worlds you’ve grown to love, giving it your best to reach the end of each level without dying.
Along the way, hit bricks and blocks to collect the coins inside them, but sometimes you get mushrooms, which can help you grow in size, which is the red mushroom, while the green mushroom will give you the ability to shoot fire. Avoid or shoot enemies, such as the turtles or the Kappa, because if they touch you, you lose or decrease in size.
The number of lives you have is limited, so don’t lose them all. Be careful of the man-eating plants coming out of the green tubes, but use some of them to teleport. Also, make use of platforms, static or moving ones, and make sure to never fall in the pits, since that also means you lose. Get to the end of each level, until you finish all the stages and save Princess Peach!
For some, being able to play Super Mario Run is a blast from the past but something entirely new for others. Whatever category you fall into, one thing is for sure, and that’s that Mario is here to stay. Only time will tell if it’s here to stay.
But, for now it’s one very popular game, and you’ve probably been playing for hours on end. I’m sure you completed quite a few levels, but are you sure that you’re taking full advantage of the game? Here are some tips and tricks for you to master Super Mario Run.
1. Master the Different Kinds of Jumps
- Wall Jump – Jump when you’re heading towards a wall, and then tap on the screen again just as you’re going to hit the wall. This is going to make you jump in the opposite direction.
- Flutter Jump – You can only flutter jump if you’re Yoshi. If you are, just tap and hold on the display, and Yoshi will flutter in the air for a while.
- Climbing Jump – Mario can climb automatically, but if you tap on the screen while you climb, you’ll perform a Climb Jump. This move will get you many Toad fans at the Toad Rallies.
- Vaulting Jump – Your character can vault over enemies automatically, but if you jump from them in the middle of the vault, you’ll get more coins and fans at the rallies.
- Floaty Jump – This jump is exclusively for Princess Peach. To Flutter Jump, tap and hold, and she’ll float but only for short distances.
- Rolling Jump – Your character will automatically roll to break the fall, but to gain extra fans at the rallies, tap to jump in mid-roll.
2. How to Play Bonus Levels
Super Mario Run lets you play bonus rounds every four hours. To play them, go to your kingdom and tap on the Bonus Game House which is the first building you installed.
3. Dying Can Be a Good Thing
You will lose a couple of coins in the process, but sometimes it’s worth it. By dying on purpose your character will be placed in a bubble, and you’ll rewind to the very beginning of the level. If you missed some coins, you can go back to that exact area by tapping on the screen.
4. How to Win Bonus Tickets for Toad Rallies
On every level you’ll see two types of coins: gold and pink. Collect all five of the pink coins, and you’ll get the bonus ticket. Not only that, but you’ll also unlock the purple coins, and if you get five of those, you’ll unlock the black coins.
5. Make Mario Stop in His Tracks
Once Mario starts running there is no way to stop him – or is there? Each level has its red blocks that will pause the timer as well as stop Mario. Unless you’re at a point where the path is going to split, you’ll need to avoid these red blocks.
The red blocks are meant to help you in situations such as getting on moving platforms or adjusting your timing. But remember to think quickly to see if they are useful or not at the moment.
6. How to Unlock More Characters
Playing with just one character can be boring. That’s why you should always have the goal of unlocking more characters. You can easily get the Toad character by linking your Nintendo account with the app.
To unlock more characters, simply build up your kingdom, and the extra characters will come. For example, to unlock Luigi, you’re going to need to collect 150 green toads by playing Toad Rally.
Then, you’ll need to buy Luigi’s house in the app’s store. To switch characters, tap on the character portrait icon in the bottom-right once you’ve chosen a level.
7. Improve Battery Life and Performance
Super Mario Run can get addictive, and playing too much can drain your phone’s battery. To save battery life, go to your kingdom’s overview and tap on “Menu -> Settings.” Tap on the “Rendering and Graphics” settings, and they will automatically switch to low.
8. How to Remove the Thwomp Enemies
When you see your kingdom for the first time, you’ll see two Thwomp enemies crowding it. To remove those, you’re going to be given hammers as you progress in the game. You’ll receive them, but the game never tells you what they are for. Now you know. To use them, go to the Build menu and tap on the hammer icon in the bottom-right.
Conclusion
With Super Mario Run, you always say to yourself that you’ll only play one more but end up playing for another hour. If you’re determined to clear that level, you might as well know all the tips and tricks. Do you have any tips to share? Drop a comment below.

Fix Super Mario Run Issues and Play Without Any Fuss
Super Mario Run was released yesterday and has managed to become the top game in the App Store. But for some people, the story isn’t rosy at all, as certain users saw the game crashing at various occasions and refusing to load up entirely if they have a jailbroken device at hand. But don’t panic, we will walk you through everything and make sure you get your Super Mario Run fix by the time you are done reading all of this.
Fix Super Mario Run Crash Issue
Downloaded the game and seeing it crash all over the place? Well, try the following fixes, provided you are not jailbroken.
- Force reset your iPhone or iPad.
- Clear the RAM and then launch the game again.
- Force close the game from the background and launch it again. Double press the Home button, quit Super Mario Run by swiping up on it.
- Delete the game, restart your device and reinstall it back from the App Store.
- Make sure you have the latest version of iOS installed. Head over to Settings > General > Software Update.
Following one, if not all of the steps outlined above, should fix the crashing issue instantly. It’s important to note that the game requires at least iOS 8 to run. If you are running anything lesser, it won’t even download due to lack of compatibility.
Bypass Super Mario Run Jailbreak Detection
Super Mario Run has a few lines of code in place that checks a device for its jailbreak status. As soon as it sees that your device is jaiibroken, the game will instantly crash. At first, you’ll feel there’s nothing you can do to fix this issue. But don’t panic, you can get around this check and play the game like a pro.
First and foremost, launch Cydia on your device and search for a package named tsProtector. It’s paid, but worth the investment if you want to play Super Mario Run. Once downloaded and installed, go to the iOS Settings app, scrolled down and tap on tsProtector. Once here tap on Black List Apps then move the Super Mario Run toggle switch to the ON position.
Go back to the home screen, and then run the game. It should work just fine from here on in.

Up until a couple of hours ago, I had been having a smooth sailing on the new gaming sensation called “Super Mario Run.” Just when I was getting ready to challenge my best friend, the endless running game started crashing on my iPhone.
The game app would crash out time and again when launched. On a few occasions, it crashed when I was just about to strike gold in the midst of an exciting session. Thankfully, a few tricks helped me resolve the problem. Here they are!
How to Fix Super Mario Run Crashing Issue on iPhone and iPad
Solution #1. Force Reboot Your iPhone
One of the first tricks that I tried to fix the crashing issue of this endless runner game was the force reboot. Luckily it worked for me.
Simply press and hold the ON/Off button and Home button at once for about ten seconds on your iPhone and iPad until you see Apple logo on the screen.
On iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, you need to press and hold the On/Off button and volume down button at once.
Solution #2. Lower Rendering Setting and Graphics Setting
If the first trick doesn’t work in fixing the issue, then lower the rendering as well as graphics setting of the game, reboot your iPhone and try to play it again.
Solution #3: Reset All Settings
Try resetting your device to factory setting. It won’t remove any photos or data from your smartphone. Go to Settings → General → Reset → Reset All Settings.
Solution #4. Is Your iPhone Cluttered for Space? Free Up Storage
Lack of space on your device can cause apps to crash. Head over to this post to clean up your iPhone without deleting any photo or app and retrieve a lot of storage.
Solution #5: Restore Your iPhone As New
If none of the above-mentioned tricks help you fix the crashing issue, restore your iPhone as new. It can help you resolve the random crashing issue of the app. Make sure to back up your device before going for the restore process.
I’m sure these tips can let you get rid of this crashing issue of Super Mario Run.

Super Mario Run is finally available on iOS and it’s actually pretty good ! Problem is, you can’t play it offline. If you’re a commuter hoping to nab some coins on the subway, this is the only way to play a little so far.
The always-online setup for Super Mario Run is to prevent piracy, so the network usage is mainly for “checking in” with Nintendo’s servers. That means once something is loaded, it stays that way until the next check-in. After playing around with ways to circumvent the piracy check-ins, this is the best offline play option I could come up with:
- Select and load a World Tour level while you’re above ground and connected to your data network. You can get through the entire level, even if you lose your connection.
- Play through the level and try for your best run, or better yet, make your focus collecting the colored coins.
- As soon as you mess up, or know you’re not going to get the coin you’re trying to nab, pause the game and restart the level. As long as you stop before you reach the flag, you can keep restarting the level as much as you like.
Once you finally get your perfect run or get that hard-to-reach coin, you can finish the level. You’ll get an error code, but once you’re back above ground, the game will reconnect, do it’s check-in, and give you the coins you earned. This method is by no means ideal, but it’s the only feasible way to kinda-sorta play without a network connection right now. So save those special coin-hunting, secret-finding runs for your commute and do the rest of the stuff, like Toad Rally, when you’re above ground.
Super Mario Run: The Kotaku Review
If you were worried that Nintendo’s move into mobile gaming would change the quality of their…
Few video games can claim the distinction of being in the general consciousness for decades, spanning different generations. Super Mario (🔎 wiki) is one of, if not the only one, that has made great strides in this area.
There’s almost no one on the planet who has not heard of the Italian plumber in overalls who goes by the name of Mario. Those who have never played the game may not be aware of his humble beginnings but they have in some shape or form, heard of him.
Mario wasn’t even the main character in his first appearance in the video game. Most importantly, he wasn’t even a plumber and he wasn’t called Mario. He made his first appearance in 1981 in the pioneering arcade game called Donkey Kong. The character was called Jumpman and he was a carpenter.
You can read more about the history and evolution of Mario here.
Gameplay
When playing, the player is assuming the role of Mario and has to go through the Mushroom Kingdom. The player has to survive the evil forces of the game’s villain, Bowser, and rescue Princess Toadstool. To win the game, Mario has to reach the flag pole at the end of each level.
There are coins scattered throughout the game which need to be collected. There are also special bricks with question marks that reveal more coins and other special items once hit. It’s a must to hit other bricks if there’s enough time as they might contain rare items or coins.
Eating a mushroom transforms regular Marion into Super Mario, which means he grows double in size and gets the ability to break bricks above him. Careful though as when he gets hit in this mode, he reverts to his original self, but he won’t die.
In Super Mario Bros., Mario has a pretty rough day. He’s forced to rescue a princess completely on his own, which seems suspicious given the fact that most royal families have designated security details at their disposal. What kind of third-rate dynasty hires a plumber to save an heiress?
Despite being woefully under-qualified, Mario agrees to transport to a magical world where he runs, jumps, swims, and kills everything in sight to get to a castle where a smartass toadstool tells him the princess isn’t there. He does this seven different times before getting it right. Besides the psychological damage of all that growing and shrinking, killing, and repeated dying, what kind of physical toll is Mario subjected to?
As brilliant reader John D. asked, how many miles does Mario have to travel before he finally gets to Princess Peach?
To figure this out, I took Ian Albert’s level maps that he painstakingly stitched together from screenshots (check out his website and amazing maps here) and measured their width. In the NES version of the game, Mario’s relative size (in his smaller, pre-mushroom ingestion phase) was then calculated as if he were a normal human man. He stands astride, so the measurements were based on an approximation of someone with their feet slightly more than shoulder-width apart, or 26 inches.
If we assume Mario takes a route with no bonus areas or warps, the total distance from his initial starting point to the final castle is about 17,835 feet, or 3.4 miles.
But what about the water levels? If you isolate these, Mario swims an estimated 1218.5 feet, or 371 meters, during his ordeal, which is about 7 and a half laps in an Olympic-sized pool.
The longest single level is the eighth world’s first stage, and it comes in at about 1039 feet. The shortest is world four, stage three, which is around 425 feet long.
If Mario does in fact visit every bonus area, the total distance he travels increases by 1574 feet, and his full journey becomes about 3.7 miles. Of those bonus areas, 344 feet are underwater, so Mario tacks on another 105В meters to his swim total.
Mario doesn’t go in a straight line and he is occasionally transported to different locations and worlds, so these numbers are just an approximation. But think about all the time you spent toiling away at your NES. All those hours and days spent mashing buttons—jumping on Goombas, falling into abysses, ducking projectiles—all that work resulted in little more than Mario completing a 5K to raise awareness for princess theft.
Are those Boos keeping you spooked? We’ll teach you how to take them down in our Super Mario Run guide for killing ghosts.
Super Mario Run has a ton of returning characters and enemies from past Super Mario games. You’ll first encounter the ghostly Boos in World 2-1 when you visit your first haunted house-like level. It’s relatively easy to avoid the ghosts in World 2-1. However, it’s not until later, in World 5-3, when you’ll start having to face down the Boo ghosts.
In World 5-3 the Boos will have items in them. These items can be just coins, or they can be keys you need to reach the end of the level. To obtain these items, you’ll have to kill those ghosts and take them! It’s not impossible to kill them, but it can be tricky. Follow the guide below to find out the best way to take down those dastardly Boos.
How to Kill Ghosts Like a Pro
In Super Mario Run. Mario is always running, so you’ve always got to be quick on your toes. The main thing to keep in mind is that you can’t kill the ghosts permanently. Boos are unfortunately immortal, but you can turn their fright back around on them and make them disappear. You see, when you look at a ghost they get bashful and turn invisible. It’s from this moment you can snag whatever item they were carrying.
The best way to “kill” ghosts is to use the backward blocks to backflip over them. When you land and look at them, the Boos will disappear, and you can get the item they were carrying, which will be hovering in mid-air. It might take some time to get used to this, though. You have to time your jumps just right, or you’ll land right on the ghost. Mario is the best character to use for fighting ghosts. If he has used a Super Mushroom to become Super Mario, you can hit the ghost without being forced into the bubble and getting pushed back in the level. Any other character that hits a Boo will instantly get caught in the bubble, and if you are bubbled too many times, you have to start the level over.
More Ways to be the Best at Super Mario Run
Now that you know how to get past the Boos and their ghostly ways, you can learn how to do even more in Super Mario Run. If you’ve been having trouble figuring out how to get more of the various colored Toads, we can help you out. Maybe you want to learn how to take a Friendly Run with your friends, or perhaps you’re looking to collect all the Pink Coins in Super Mario Run.

The new iOS 11 update provides an easy software-based solution to shut down your iPhone in case the power button, officially known as the Sleep/Wake button on all iPhone models except the iPhone X, goes bonkers. In addition to this, there’s also a hidden setting that lets you instantly restart the device, and it’s better than the “Bold Text” trick that’s been around since iOS 7.
With a software-restart and a broken power button, you won’t have to shut down the device the hard way and then connect your charger to it in order to turn it back on. All it takes is a few taps on your screen, and you won’t have to worry about all the on-screen text being bolded when you get back up and running.
As with everything iOS, this hidden restart feature is incredibly easy to enable and access, giving you a convenient new option to reboot your device without relying on hardware buttons. We’ll first need to enable AssistiveTouch to get the ball rolling, so head over to “General” in Settings. From there, tap on “Accessibility,” select “AssistiveTouch,” then toggle the feature on.
With AssistiveTouch now enabled, simply tap on it to open its window. From there, tap on “Device,” then select “More.” You can now perform a reboot on your iPhone by tapping on the “Restart” button that appears then tapping “Restart” on the confirmation prompt that follows.

The highly anticipated Super Mario Run platformer game from Nintendo launched on the App Store Thursday afternoon, but anyone who has a jailbroken device is in for a surprise when they try to play, as it appears Nintendo built jailbreak detection into the game.
This is particularly common among a number of hit games from the App Store, including Pokémon GO, and causes the app in question to do nothing but crash whenever you attempt to launch it, but there is a way around it if you still want to play Super Mario Run on your jailbroken iOS devices, and we’ll show you how.
How to play Super Mario Run on a jailbroken iPhone
To play the Super Mario Run game you just downloaded on your jailbroken device, you’ll need to install a tweak from Cydia that can hide your jailbroken status from the game when it does its preliminary check.
A lot of the older jailbreak tweaks that used to do this for other apps won’t work for this, but one that does is called tsProtector 8+ (iOS 9 & 9) by iOS developer typ0s2d10, and it’s available in Cydia’s BigBoss repository.
It’s a paid tweak, but it comes with a limited free trial that lasts forever, and that’s all you’re really going to need. So you won’t have to pay anything to make this work.
Getting the patch
To get it, follow these steps:
1) Launch Cydia from your Home screen.
2) Search for “tsprotector” in the Search field
3) Tap on the tsProtector 8+ (iOS 9 & 8) option.
4) Tap on the blue Install button at the top right of the tweak and follow the prompts in Cydia until the installation is complete.
Applying the patch
After you install the tweak from Cydia, you can follow the following steps to bypass Super Mario Run’s jailbreak protection on your device:
1) Launch the Settings app from your Home screen.
2) Open the tsProtector preferences pane.
3) Open the Black List Apps cell:
4) Turn on the MARIO RUN toggle switch.
Now that you’ve applied this patch to the Super Mario Run again, you should be able to launch it on your jailbroken device and the game should load as expected without any hesitation.
One thing to remember…
If you’re running the Pangu jailbreak for iOS 9.3.3, then you’re using a semi-untethered jailbreak. This means when you reboot, you will need to run the Pangu app from your Home screen to reinitialize your jailbreak.
If you don’t do this, your jailbreak won’t function when your device reboots and this also means the patch won’t reinitialize. So if you attempt to play the game after a reboot without running the Pangu tool, you’ll be right back at square one with a game that crashes at startup.
So with that in mind, if you’re jailbroken and you’re using this patch to play, try your best to remember to boot semi-untethered every time to reboot before you try playing Super Mario Run.
Disclaimer: Super Mario Run requires an active internet connection at all times to be played. Since it’s always phoning home, we are not responsible if you happen to get locked out of the game or banned from playing it for applying these kinds of patches. Install them at your own risk.

So, in the initial footage of Super Mario Run, we only ever saw Mario playing the game. In the final gameplay trailer, it was revealed that Yoshi, Toad and Luigi would be joining in on the fun. In the final version of the game, there’s actually six characters who you can unlock through a variety of methods. The characters all add depth to the game as they control quite differently.
HOW TO PLAY AS MARIO
Thankfully, Mario is unlocked from the start of the game.
HOW TO PLAY AS TOAD
Toad is definitely the easiest character to unlock. All you have to do is link your My Nintendo account to the game at any point and collect your reward from the My Nintendo menu. He will then appear in the gift box on the Kingdom Builder page.
HOW TO PLAY AS YOSHI
To unlock Yoshi, you’ll need to play enough of Toad Rally to recruit enough toads to unlock Yoshi’s House. Yoshi’s House is definitely the easiest to unlock. You only need to collect 30 Red Toads and 30 Yellow Toads. That won’t take more than an hour.
HOW TO PLAY AS PRINCESS PEACH
To unlock Princess Peach, you’ll need to complete the World Tour mode which consists of 24 levels. This doesn’t take too long at all depending on how quickly you rush through the game. Don’t forget that there’s three sets of five coins to collect for each level to add to replay value.
HOW TO PLAY AS LUIGI
To unlock Luigi, you’ll need to play enough of Toad Rally to recruit enough toads to unlock Luigi’s House. In particular, you’ll need to recruit 150 Green Toads and 150 Purple Toads. That’s definitely going to take a while.
HOW TO PLAY AS TOADETTE
To unlock Luigi, you’ll need to play enough of Toad Rally to recruit enough toads to unlock Toadette’s House. Toadette’s house is definitely going to be the hardest to unlock. You’ll need to collect 200 Red Toads, 200 Blue Toads, 200 Green Toads, 200 Purple Toads and 200 Yellow Toads.

Managed to achieve 281 coins on 1-4 Purple (Toad)
Idea was very similar to my old strat but I managed to use my bubbles in a different way. I had the idea after watching PSMagus’s video 😉 At the start, jump on the dry bones at the top and them combo with the 2 at the bottom. I did this seven times! This makes the rest of the level very tight for time so you have to be fast.
At the first intersection go up, hit the coin clock and collect all the coins while also comboing the 3 dry bones. Make sure you don’t hit the floor when collecting the final coins, then bubble back to the 2 dry bones. You should be on 50/51 seconds. Combo the 2 dry bones and go up again, and this time get the bubble. Get the combo of 3 and bubble back. Get the 2 dry bones again and then go underneath.
Continue to the pause block just before the next 2 dry bones. WAIT for them to come closer. This saves time. Get the combo and bubble back. You should have about 25/26 seconds here. Bubble back to the combo of 3 on the top row. Then just continue to the finish getting all remaining coins.
If you do the combo at the start 6 times, then 274 is still possible, might be easier to go for that strategy first as it gives you more time.

I have nothing new to add, but wanted to commend you all for your amazing scores, and Jonny for this soft reboot of GameCubed’s thread. Looks great (even if I’m hardly on it)!!
Hey Jonny, how did you and Waluigi manage to squeeze that one extra coin (244) out if 2-1? Was it magic?
Cheers,

Last week, after a wait of almost a decade, the world’s most popular video game series, Super Mario Bros., finally came to the world’s most popular video game machine: the iPhone. Nintendo’s Super Mario Run went immediately to the top of the App Store charts, above mainstays like Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and YouTube. According to one estimate, the game was downloaded 37 million times in its first three days.
Unfortunately, despite Nintendo’s history and reputation, Super Mario Run is not a family-friendly game — or at least not one my wife and I will be letting our 6-year-old daughter play. The game is rife with stale, retrograde gender stereotypes — elements that were perhaps expected in 1985, when the first Super Mario Bros. was released in the United States, but that today are just embarrassing.
Super Mario Run begins, as does almost every Super Mario title, with Princess Peach becoming a hostage who must be rescued by Mario. Just before her ritual kidnapping, Peach invites Mario to her castle and pledges to bake him a cake. Upon her rescue, she kisses Mario. The game also includes a second female character, Toadette, whose job is to wave a flag before and after a race, like a character from “Grease.”
By failing to update Super Mario for a contemporary audience, Nintendo is lagging far behind the Walt Disney Co., one of its closest American analogues. Disney’s film “Frozen” subverted and reinvigorated the fairy-tale princess movie; “The Force Awakens” gave us a female Jedi. Super Mario Run doesn’t even try.
In isolation, there’s nothing wrong with princesses or baking. My daughters love those things, too. But Super Mario Run relegates its female characters to positions of near helplessness. Peach and Toadette become playable only after you complete certain tasks, which makes the women in the game feel like prizes. (To be fair, the same is true of a few male characters.) Worse, should you then use Peach to defeat her kidnapper, Bowser, you’ll discover that neither Mario nor a kiss is waiting for her as a reward.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the designer of Super Mario Bros. — as well as Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda and other landmark games — is frequently called the Walt Disney of video games. He may have a little too much Uncle Walt in him and not enough Hayao Miyazaki, whose Studio Ghibli movies like “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Spirited Away” are filled with adventurous young heroines.
Mr. Miyamoto told Wired this month that he was more involved with the design of Super Mario Run than that of any Mario game since 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy. That means that the only two Super Mario games that include a playable female character from the start — 1988’s Super Mario Bros. 2 and 2013’s spectacular Super Mario 3D World — were games in which Mr. Miyamoto was not directly involved with the level design.
The world would be a worse place if video game creators were judged only by whether they balanced their games with male and female protagonists. Some of 2016’s best video games, including the interactive drama Firewatch and the disturbing Mario-inspired Inside, are largely about men and boys.
Still, lots of girls and women play video games. There are more women over 30 who play video games than boys under 18 who play, according to the industry’s lobbying arm, the Entertainment Software Association. A Pew Research Center survey published last year found that almost 60 percent of girls between the ages of 13 and 17 are gamers.
Seeing people like yourself depicted as heroic on TV and in movies and video games can have a powerful effect on viewers and players. The actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani, who was born in Pakistan, tweeted after watching “Rogue One,” the new “Star Wars” movie, that he “started tearing up” after a scene in which “people who looked like me and dressed like my people were good guys.”
Representation in interactive media may be even more important than it is in linear entertainment. In video games, players describe ourselves as the digital avatars we control on a screen. We say “I died,” not “he died.”
This sense of identification gives video games an enormous capacity to create empathy for other people. There are video games in which you play as the parent of a dying child, as a transgender woman beginning hormone replacement therapy, as the son of an alcoholic. But it also presents more conventional game designers with an opportunity to create games in which young girls, and not just young boys, actually become heroes themselves.
“Players describe the experience of being with one as less like talking with a person and more like inhabiting someone else’s mind,” the social scientist Sherry Turkle wrote of video games in 1984 in “The Second Self,” one year before Super Mario Bros. came to America. “In pinball you act on the ball. In Pac Man you are the mouth.”
The knowledge that video games possess this power, that they allow us to adopt new identities and grant us new ways of seeing ourselves, is as old as Mario’s quest for his princess. Which makes it all the sadder that Mr. Miyamoto, with all his gifts, has yet to seize it.

Nintendo’s high-profile smartphone game Super Mario Run launched today for iOS devices. In addition to Mario, the game lets you play as other characters from the Mushroom Kingdom, but how do you unlock them? Now that the game is out, it’s been revealed that there are five unlockable characters, some of which are only obtainable if you pay.
First, you can unlock Toad by linking your My Nintendo account to Super Mario Run. Peach can be obtained by finishing the game’s 24 World Tour levels. The other three characters, Yoshi, Toadette, and Luigi, can be unlocked by purchasing certain items in the Kingdom Builder mode using in-game items.

Super Mario Run is free to download (free-to-start is the term Nintendo uses), but that only gets you the first three World Tour levels. After that, you need to pay $10 to unlock the rest.
You can download Super Mario Run right here.
In other news, research group SuperData said it expects Super Mario Run to reach 30 million downloads and bring in $60 million during its first month. As announced previously, the game is launching first on iOS devices before coming to Android sometime next year.

For the first time since Super Mario World was released in 1991, there is a new 2D side-scrolling adventure that can be played on a non-handheld system. It features everyone’s favorite hero, Mario. Whether you’re a veteran Mario fan or a newcomer, your skills could be a little rusty. New Super Mario Bros. Wii also has many new features you are probably unfamiliar with, but in no time you’ll be stomping Koopas and racking up points.
Know your enemies. There are a lot of classic Mario enemies in this game. Knowing how to avoid or defeat each can help you significantly. Here are some of the most common ones:
- Koopa Troopa: The most common enemy you will come across. Stomp on their shells to immobilize them, and you can kick them away if you wish. Kicking a Koopa shell near other enemies will knock out anything in its path. Just be sure it doesn’t come back at you because Koopa shells are dangerous. Koopa Paratroopas have small white wings, allowing them to hop around or hover in the air. Stomp on them to take their wings off, and they will walk around like a normal Koopa.
Note: The difference between Koopas with red shells and green shells is that red ones stay put on the ledge they walk on, while green Koopas walk continuously in a straight line, only turning if they hit a dead-end.
