In previous editions of Windows, you could easily do this by popping up the Start menu and navigating with the Windows key and then the arrow keys, but Windows 8.x has that really annoying Start Screen that they are thankfully removing in the next version. So how do you manage it in the meantime?

It’s really simple.

First, use WIN + X to pull up the power tools menu.

Then use the U key on the keyboard to pop out the “Shut down or sign out” menu.

Now you can use the U key to immediately shut down, or R for restart, S for sleep, or I for sign out. You are now a keyboard ninja. Be proud of yourself.

Update: Mr Wizard in the comments points out that you can also click on the desktop (or just make sure the desktop is the active window) and use ALT + F4 to bring up the shutdown dialog.

In fact, computer restart, as a solution, is not limited only to Windows. It’s used across a variety of devices such as Android, iOS, Linux, etc., because of how it works. Even in Windows, your apps might be restarted seperately, even after your PC get rebooted.

So, why so focus much on a restart?

Put briefly, after running a slew of programs and other system tasks concurrently over a period of time, your computer gets slowed down by these programs (that were terminated a while ago, but are still occupying resources), memory leaks, and other similar issues. A restart works by clearing your RAM—which in turn is responsible for running all the Windows tasks—and thus, making your Windows start over from a fresh, clean state again.

So, here are 5 ways to restart your Windows 10 or Windows 11 right away.

1. Restart your Windows 10/11 through Alt + F4

One of my personal favorites, the Alt + F4 method is the most straightforward way to reboot your Windows computer.

Whatever you’re doing, just press the Alt and F4 key together to bring up the Shut Down menu. From there, click on the dropdown list, select the Restart option and click on OK.

If you’ve already closed all your other programs and windows, then well and good, otherwise, the application will close them for you and then restart your Windows computer.

Just make sure you don’t have any unsaved work before you go ahead.

2. Restart Windows PC from Start menu

If you’re more of a GUI person, then that’s fair too. In that case, you can reboot your Windows 10/11 from the Start menu search bar, as Microsoft shows on their blog. Here’s how you can get started:

1. Navigate to the Start menu search bar and click on the Windows icon.
2. From there, select the power button and click on Restart.

3. Restart your Windows 10/11 with Ctrl + Alt + Delete

This is another shortcut method, and the trick will come in handy if your computer has been in a rut for while, and you’re unable to use other methods even if you want to.

To get started, press Ctrl + All + Delete together, and the security options menu will pop open. From there, click on the Power option from the bottom-right corner and select the Restart option.

Your PC will reboot in a few seconds.

4. Restart your Windows with Command prompt

Command prompt is a handy utility for executing lower level tasks and, at the same time, provides more control to users. And interestingly, it can also be utilized for rebooting the PC.

1. Go to the Start menu search bar, type in ‘command prompt,’ and select the Best match.
2. Now type shutdown /r in the terminal and hit Enter.

You’ll get a pop-up that will tell you that your Windows will shut down in less than a minute. Click on Close and wait for a few seconds while the restart process begins.

While it seems like a time-suck, restarting your computer helps it to run more smoothly. A restart can flush your computer’s memory, shutting down or updating programs that, in turn, free up your computer’s processor.

How to restart your Windows computer

There are a few different ways to shut down or restart on a Windows computer, and some may not always work depending on how it’s running. Below is a list of them, so whatever your situation, you have an option for getting your computer restarted.

Use the on-screen Start button

This is the most standard method for shutting down or restarting a Windows computer. Using the Start button, you can choose to restart your entire computer, effectively closing all your running apps, or shut your computer down and turn it back on. Selecting shut down will do all of the above outside of powering back up again. Here’s how to do both.

1. Click the Start button in the lower-left corner of your screen. You can also press the Windows key on your keyboard to open the Start menu.

2. Choose the Power icon.

3. When you click the power button, you will have the option to put your computer to sleep, restart it, or power it down.

Use Ctrl + Alt + Delete

This method only requires using the keyboard. It’s likely your best option if your applications freeze or your computer’s processing speeds take a sudden dip.

1. On your computer keyboard, hold down the control (Ctrl), alternate (Alt), and delete (Del) keys at the same time.

2. Release the keys and wait for a new menu or window to appear.

3. In the bottom right corner of the screen, click the Power icon.

4. Select between Shut Down and Restart.

Use the power button

This method is best for when your computer has frozen entirely. A forced shutdown is not always great for your system, but if even Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesn’t work, this will.

Somewhere on your computer — depending on what kind you have — there is a power button. Laptop users can likely find it on the left or right side of their device. You may also find it in the upper left, center, or right-hand corners of your keyboard. On desktop computers, you’ll likely find the power button on your vertical or horizontal tower.

When your shutdown and restart is complete, you may be able to open any applications you had open when your computer shut down and recover the files you didn’t get a chance to save. Here’s how to restart your Windows computer using the power button.

1. Locate your computer’s Power button.

2. Press and hold that button until your computer shuts down.

3. Wait until you hear the computer’s fans shut off, and your screen goes completely black.

4. Wait a few seconds before pressing and holding the power button to initiate your computer’s normal startup.

There’s a right way, and several wrong ways, to reboot (restart) a computer. It’s not an ethical dilemma—only one method ensures that problems don’t pop up after you restart.

How to Reboot a Computer

To safely restart a Windows computer, open the Start menu and choose the Restart option. Below are detailed directions if you need them.

These instructions can be followed on Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP. See What Version of Windows Do I Have? if you’re not sure which of those several versions of Windows is installed on your computer.

How to Reboot a Windows 11, 10, or 8 Computer

The “normal” way to reboot a computer running Windows 11/10/8 is through the Start menu:

Open the Start menu.

Select the power icon at the bottom (Windows 11/10) or top (Windows 8) of the screen.

Select Restart.

Using the Power User Menu

The second is a little faster and doesn’t require the full Start menu:

Open the Power User Menu by pressing the Win (Windows) key and X.

Go to Shut down or sign out.

Select Restart.

The Windows 8 Start screen functions differently from the Start menus in other versions of Windows. Install a Windows 8 Start menu replacement to return the Start screen to a legacy-looking Start menu and have easier access to the restart option.

How to Reboot a Windows 7, Vista, or XP Computer

The quickest way to reboot Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP is through the Start menu:

Open the Start menu from the taskbar.

In Windows 7 and Vista, select the small arrow next to the right of the “Shut down” button.

In Windows XP, select Shut Down or Turn Off Computer. 

Choose Restart.

How to Restart a Computer With Ctrl+Alt+Del

Use the Ctrl+Alt+Del keyboard shortcut to open the shutdown dialog box in all versions of Windows. This apporach is an optional method that works just as well as using the Start menu or the Start screen.

The screens look different depending on which version of Windows you’re using, but each of them gives the option to restart the computer:

• Windows 11, 10, and 8: Choose the power icon on the bottom right of the screen to find the Restart option.

• Windows 7 and Vista: Select the arrow next to the red power button in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, then select Restart.

• Windows XP: Select Shut Down from the menu, and then Restart.

How to Restart Windows From a Command Prompt

Type this command and press Enter:

​The /r parameter specifies that it should restart the computer instead of just shut it down (which is what happens when /s is used).

Wait while the computer restarts.

The same restart command can be used from the Run dialog box (Win+R).

Restart PC With a Batch File

To restart a computer with a batch file, enter the same command. Something like this will restart the computer in 60 seconds:

“Reboot” Doesn’t Always Mean “Reset”

Be careful if you see the option to reset something. Restarting, also known as rebooting, is also sometimes called resetting. However, the term resetting is also often used synonymously with a factory reset, meaning a complete wipe-and-reinstall of a system, something very different than a restart and not something you want to take lightly.

When you install an update, your computer needs to replace certain files, But, it can’t replace those files while they’re in use. Restarting your computer allows it to make whatever changes are necessary to properly install the update.

On most modern computers, the Power button is used to restart the device. You can usually find it on the top right or top left of your laptop keyboard or on the front of your PC’s tower. Press and hold it for a few seconds until the computer reboots.

Open Command Prompt as an administrator, then type shutdown /m \\[your computer’s name] /s. Add a /f to the end of the command if you want to force all apps to quit on the remote computer. Use /c if you want to add a message (for example: /c “This computer will shut down momentarily. Please save all work.”)

If your computer needs to restart to finish installing an update, you can schedule when that happens by going into Windows Update and choosing Schedule the Restart. You can also use Windows Task Scheduler to create an automated task that restarts the machine. Open the app, choose Create Basic Task, and follow the on-screen instructions to set it up.

I often restart my computer to complete software installations or Windows updates. It’s not normally a hassle to open the start menu and choose to restart, but there is a much simpler way to do so. We’ve looked at the native Windows 8 shortcuts as well as those found in Windows 7. However, we can also create our own shortcuts for unique purposes.

The shortcuts we’ll be making today involve shutting down, restarting, logging off, hibernating, and switching a user account. We’ll make shortcuts to these commands and then assign a unique keyboard combination to each of them to make launching them really easy. No longer will you need to open the start menu to perform these particular operations. Simply enter your key combo and you’ll be on your way.

Using the Shutdown Command from the Command Line

There are plenty of switches that can be used with the shutdown command, as you can see here with shutdown /?:

Any of these commands can be run right from the command prompt. For example, enter shutdown /L to logoff.

Or you could open the graphical interface for shutting down and restarting using the shutdown /i command. Though, this GUI is limited to only two commands.

However, to quickly and easily shutdown or restart, a shortcut can be made to these operations that can then be associated with a shortcut key. Enter the shortcut key and voila – the command is executed! No need to open the interface, start menu, or command prompt. But first we’ll need to make the shortcuts.

Create the Shortcuts

On the desktop, right-click anywhere and make a new shortcut from New > Shortcut.

Use any of the following commands for the location of the item.

To shutdown (like below):

To log off:

To restart:

To hibernate:

To switch user (not log off):

Then name the item something suitable, like Shutdown for the first command.

Now right-click any shortcut you just created and choose Properties. Then ensure the Shortcut tab is selected and point your focus to the Shortcut key section.

Click in this text box and enter any key combination by performing the combination on the keyboard. For example, click this text box and enter the keys Ctrl + Alt + L to define the shortcut as such.

Save the changes. Now at any time you can simply enter Ctrl + Alt + L to lock the workstation.

Note: Windows Key + L will also lock a workstation regardless of this batch file being created. However, the other shortcuts require their own unique keys to be assigned.

Conclusion

Any program can be assigned a shortcut like we’ve discussed here. Creating a shortcut for repetitive tasks like this make it very useful for launching the desired command. Furthermore, making a keyboard shortcut for the command is quite possibly the quickest way to perform the actions.

At some point, you’ll need to restart your Windows 11 PC to troubleshoot an issue, install an update, complete an installation, or otherwise. While you’ll often see a “restart” option when updating, here are several other ways to restart your PC manually.

Use the Power Button in the Start Menu

One of the quickest and most obvious ways to restart is by using the Start menu. To get started, click the “Start” button in your taskbar. When the Start menu opens, click the power button in the lower-right corner of the menu. In the menu that pops up, select “Restart.” Your PC will shut down and restart.

You can also restart Windows 11 using the hidden power user menu. To access it, press Windows+x on your keyboard or right-click the “Start” button. When the menu appears, click “Shut down or sign out,” then select “Restart.” Your PC will restart immediately.

Press Alt+F4

Alternately, you can restart your machine with a special menu window that few people know about. First, close or minimize all windows. Click your desktop, then press Alt+F4 on your keyboard. In the “Shut Down Windows” window that appears, use the drop-down menu to select “Restart.” Then click “OK.”

Use the Command Line

There’s also a quick way to restart your PC if you have access to the Command Prompt or PowerShell. First, open Windows Terminal by searching “terminal” in Start, then clicking its app icon. At the command prompt, type “shutdown -r” and hit Enter. When you see a warning message, click “Close.” Your PC will shut down and restart in 60 seconds.

Update and Restart in Windows Update

If you have updates available and need to restart to install them, open Settings by pressing Windows+i, then select “Windows Update” in the sidebar. In “Windows Update” settings, click “Check for Updates,” and if there are any available, you can install them and restart your PC by clicking “Restart Now.” Your PC will automatically install the updates and restart.

Use Ctrl+Alt+Delete or the Login Screen

And finally, there’s also an easy way to restart from either the Ctrl+Alt+Delete menu (that appears when you press that key combination) or the login screen. On either screen, click the power icon in the lower-right corner, then select “Restart” in the small menu that pops up. Windows 11 will restart your PC, and you’ll be back in business in no time.

You can use keyboard shortcuts to put your Mac to sleep, shut down or even restart. These shortcuts work on all versions of macOS.

Save a Click and Allow Keyboard Shortcuts to Shut Down, Restart or Put Your Mac to Sleep

Keyboard shortcuts can be handy in a lot of situations. Though powering off or restarting a computer is a process that takes a couple of clicks, but you can speed that up too using keyboard shortcuts. Who knew!

Interestingly, there are keyboard shortcuts available if you want to shut down, sleep or restart your Mac. Though they are not super obvious to learn, but once you get the hang of it, you will be a pro at powering off or putting your Mac to sleep whenever needed, all without having to move your mouse around.

We will break this tutorial down into several headings so you can easily learn what you are looking for. There is even a shortcut for turning off the display, should you require that for whatever reason.

Shut Down Mac Using Keyboard Shortcut

To shut down your Mac, press the following key combination exactly as shown:

Command + Option + Control + Eject / Power

Keyboard Shortcut for Sleep

To put your Mac to sleep, press:

Command + Option + Eject / Power

Turn Off Display

You can quickly turn off your Mac’s display, internal and external both, by pressing:

Shift + Control + Eject / Power

Restart Mac Using Keyboard Shortcut

Last but not the least, you can restart your Mac at any given time by pressing the following key combination:

Control + Command + Eject / Power

Like I mentioned before, these keyboard shortcuts are not so obvious. They do take time to learn. Just print them out and slap it onto a wall until they are hardwired into memory.

For me, the most handy shortcut is the one for turning off the display. Without having to reveal your work to anyone and putting your Mac to sleep, use it to keep things rolling in the background. This is particularly great for times when you are downloading something and you do not want to put your Mac to sleep. Just turning the display off works.

This tips works great on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 (all versions)

If you’ve ever had the unfortunate experience of trying to shutdown or restart your computer when your Start menu or taskbar are missing or unresponsive…it can be daunting. One obvious way to shut down is to simply power off your computer, but there are better ways.

So here’s a way you can shutdown your computer without using the Start menu or Shutdown/Restart dialog, and it’s very easy to do. You can also shutdown or restart your computer using this tip instead of using your Start menu or shutdown dialog.

Just press & hold down the Windows Key and tap the R key to open a Run dialog.

To shutdown your computer type SHUTDOWN and press enter.

To restart your computer type SHUTDOWN /R and press enter (Please note the space between SHUTDOWN and the slash.)

So, the next time you cannot shut your computer down the way you normally do, you’ll have another option besides powering off your computer. Or if you can shutdown or restart your computer using this tip whenever you like.

A reader (John) pointed out that you can also use CTRL+ALT+DELETE to Shut down your computer, too. Just press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and click on the power button in the bottom-right corner:

And two more ways to shut down Windows that we didn’t include above:

Use the keyboard shortcut Windows Key + D then use the shortcut ALT + F4 to bring up the Shutdown dialog.

Windows Key + D takes you back to your desktop. When you’re on the desktop, the ALT+F4 key brings up the Shutdown dialog. From the dialog you can choose Shutdown, Restart, Sign out, Switch user, or Sleep. The above screenshot was taken on Windows 10, but this will work on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to.

Oh, and three more things: If you are using Windows 10, you can type Shutdown in the taskbar search and press Enter to shutdown your computer, or type Shutdown /R and press Enter to restart. You can also use the keyboard shortcuts:

Windows Key + X, U, U to shut down

Windows Key + X, U, R to restart.

And if you have Widows 10 Version 1709 (Fall Creators Update) or newer, you can use Cortana to restart or shutdown your computer using voice commands.

Good tip. One question, what if the windows key and/or Cortina will not function. Occasionally my pc will seize up and when it does the keyboard will not function. It is just dead.

You should have Cortana set up to respond to voice commands; you can shut your computer down using voice commands and Cortana does does not require a keyboard when set up properly. You should be able to say “Hey Cortana” and issue a command or start the shutdown or restart. This works on Windows 10 Creators Update (or later).

That sounds like more steps to achieve a restart.

This is one way to do it. We have received dozens and dozens of emails over the years from people whose start menu wouldn’t open and they ask how they could shut down (or restart) without access to the start menu. So if your start menu is frozen or won’t open, at least now you know ou have options. Y

What about Control Alt Delete?

Thanks John. We forgot about that option. We added it to the tip.

I was always taught that using the Control Alt Delete option of shutting down your computer should only be used as the very LAST resort because it could cause harm to your computer. And for that reason it has also been called Three Finger Suicide… 🙂 Thoughts?

As far I know, CTRL+ALT+DELETE has not been called the “3-fingered” salute since Windows XP. On Windows 7, Windows 8x and Windows 10, CTRL+ALT+DELETE brings up a menu, one of the options on the menu is the power option where you can shutdown or restart your computer. This is exactly the same option you have on your Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 start menu.

How about the power key?? When stuff doesn’t work power that baby off.

As a last resort. Turning off your computer using the power button can cause hard drive problems, Windows problems, and for sure, you’ll lose any work in progress. There are times when using the power button maybe the only option, but it really should only be used if that’s the only way to restart / shutdown the PC

Think Ms. D. meant suicide not salute. But I agree with you, don’t think MS would provide this option if it would compromise the system in anyway.

It brings up the same shutdown options as the start menu. There is no difference save for the extra step.

There(s a much better way to turn off your computer, just push the start button and ‘voila’, all done

And you do so at your own risk. You can do this in an emergency, but to do it continually will only end with data corruption, Windows boot issues, and hard drive failure. So, it’s your computer, but I sure am not going to tell people this is good way to shut down their computers every time.

Here are all the ways you can restart Windows 11 on your PC.

1. Use the Power button in the Start Menu
2. Alt + F4
3. Quick Link menu (Windows key + X)
4. Command Prompt, Windows PowerShell, or Run menu
5. Ctrl + Alt + Del or restart at the Login screen

For whatever reason, you’ll likely want to know how to restart Windows 11 on your PC. While you will often see an option to restart when you finish installing a Windows 11 update, you may need to restart to troubleshoot any PC-related problems.

Microsoft provides only the most basic way to restart Windows.

Fortunately, there are several ways to restart your Windows 11 PC.

Restart Windows 11

1. Restart using Start Menu

One of the most obvious ways of restarting your Windows 11 PC is by using the Start Menu. Here’s what you need to do. Open the Start Menu (Windows key) and go to the Power menu and click Restart.

2. Alt + F4

Another quick way you can restart Windows 11 is by using a special menu option. To enable it, use the keyboard shortcut Alt + F4. Once the menu opens, chose Restart from the dropdown list and choose OK to restart Windows 11.

3. Quick Link menu (Windows key + X)

A third way to restart Windows 11 is to use the Quick Link menu. To enable this, all you need to do is use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut.

From there, go to “Shut down or sign out” and choose “Restart.”

4. Use the restart command

The fourth way is a quick way to restart your PC if you have access to Command Prompt or Windows PowerShell. All you need to do is copy and paste the following command at the prompt:

shutdown /r

(the /r parameter is for “restart”)

Once you copy and paste this command, press Enter. In addition, you can also copy and paste this command into the Run menu. In the Run menu, click OK.

Once the command is completed, you will see a warning message, click the Close (only option).

After the warning message is closed, your PC will restart in 60 seconds. Just in case you made a mistake and want to cancel the countdown, use the following command: shutdown /a

Alternatively, you can use the following command to restart Windows 11 immediately (without the 60 seconds countdown): shutdown /r /t 0

You can always change the number to how much time (in seconds) you want to Windows 11 to wait before restarting; I wanted Windows 11 to restart immediately, so I used 0 as the amount of time.

5. Ctrl + Alt + Del or the Login Screen

Using the Ctrl + Alt + Del keyboard shortcut is my go-to interrupt with any Windows PC. Once entered, all you need to do is go to the Power icon in the lower right of the screen and click Restart to restart your PC. Another way you can restart Windows 11 is at the Login screen.

Another pro tip is that you can restart Windows 11 at the sign-in screen. Click the power icon in the lower right of the screen and click Restart.

Windows 10 All-in-One For Dummies

When you have finished using your computer for a while, you may want to shut down Windows 10. Don’t just turn off the power. Begin by displaying the Start screen:

Mouse: Click the Start button.

Touchscreen: Tap the Start button.

Keyboard: Press the Windows key.

Click or tap Power on the Start menu.

Available options appear in a pop-up box. Some or all of the following options appear:

Shut Down: This option exits Windows 10 and saves power by turning the computer off. In exiting Windows 10, Shut Down closes any apps that are currently running.

Sleep: This option reduces the computer’s power consumption without exiting Windows 10 or closing apps. As a result, when you wake the computer by moving the mouse or touching the screen or the keyboard, everything is exactly as you left it: apps and documents are open, if they were open before Sleep.

Hibernate: This option combines Sleep and Shut Down. Hibernate records which apps are running but also completely shuts down the computer. When you start the computer, Windows 10 opens all programs you were using, just as Sleep does.

Hibernate and Shut Down are equally green options — they save the same amount of power. Sleep is a little less green but saves time if you are returning to the middle of a task.

Restart: Temporarily shuts down Windows 10 and turns it on again. Use Restart when Windows 10 asks you to or when Windows 10 is misbehaving.

You can also shut down your computer by using the Start button. Move the pointer over the Start button and right-click. A pop-up menu appears. Select Shut Down or Sign Out on the pop-up menu, and then select an option (Sleep, Shut Down, Hibernate, or Restart).

Choose Shut Down to turn off the computer.

On most computers, pressing the power switch also shuts down the computer. On a laptop, closing the lid may shut down the laptop or put it in sleep or hibernation mode.

For a desktop computer, consider using a power strip to plug in the computer, the monitor, and the printer. After you shut down or hibernate the computer, turn off the power strip to save power.

If you recently upgraded to Windows 10 and have keyboard problems, you’re not alone. Many other Windows 10 users are reporting the same problem, especially after installing update KB4074588 from Feb. 13, 2018.

And thankfully, there is a solution prepared by IR Cache. Here are a few options to try. You probably don’t need to try them all. Just go through the list until you find one that solves the problem.

What causes keyboard problems in Windows 10

Windows 10 has some problems with older drivers, and one of those drivers seems to be the Synaptics driver. Windows 10 is not fully compatible with this driver, which can cause your laptop keyboard to stop working after Windows 10 is installed.

Filter Keys are a feature designed to ignore short or repetitive keystrokes, and according to users, this feature is enabled by default on their laptops, which is what is causing the keyboard problem.

Unfortunately, various software and hardware problems can interfere with the keyboard. In this case, simply follow the troubleshooting steps described below.

Troubleshoot keyboard problems in Windows 10

Use the Windows 10 keyboard troubleshooter

Windows 10 already comes with plenty of troubleshooters that you can use to diagnose and fix certain issues. Fortunately, there is a troubleshooter specifically designed to detect keyboard-related errors that can be fixed by the system automatically.

Here’s how to run the Windows 10 keyboard troubleshooter.

1. Click the Windows icon on the taskbar and select Settings.
2. Search for “Fix Keyboard” using the built-in search in the Settings app, then tap “Find and fix keyboard problems”.
3. Click “Next” to run the troubleshooter. You should see Windows detect problems.
4. If the problems are successfully identified, you can follow the instructions on the screen to try an automatic fix.

Update your drivers

Outdated drivers can cause many problems on your system. Be sure to update them to potentially fix your Windows 10 keyboard problems.

1. Press Windows + X on your keyboard and select Device Manager from the menu.
2. Expand the Keyboard menu by clicking the arrow next to it.
3. Right-click on the keyboard in the menu and select Update Drivers.
4. Allow Windows 10 to search for the latest driver on your local computer or online, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

Disable the Filter Keys feature

The Filter Keys feature has a known bug that causes keyboard problems. You can easily disable Filter Keys by following these steps and potentially restore your keyboard in minutes.
