How to save money on audible audiobooks

Audible is easily the largest marketplace for audiobooks, but it’s also pretty expensive. Here are a few ways you can reduce the cost of expanding your audiobook collection.

At $14.95 per month, a standard one-credit Audible subscription is more than a lot of unlimited media options (like Netflix or Amazon’s own Kindle Unlimited) for just a few hours of content. You can lower that per-item cost by buying a more expensive plan or paying yearly, but even so, there’s nothing even close to an “all you can eat” option for Audible’s vast selection. And purchasing audiobooks outright outside of the monthly token system is expensive, with most professionally published audiobooks costing $20-30. It adds up quickly.

Some alternatives are considerably cheaper or even free, like Scribd or digital rentals from your local library. But nothing beats Audible’s selection, which is probably why it’s so expensive. Here are a few ways you can mitigate that cost.

Take Advantage Of Audible’s Free Trials

New users of Audible get access to the standard “30-day free trial.” In Audible terms, this means one free credit, which you can exchange for almost any audiobook on the site. You’ll have to provide credit card information (or point to your Amazon account) to get the free credit, but if you cancel before one month, you won’t be charged. Audible credits, and the books for which you exchange them remain connected to your account even when you don’t have an active subscription.

How to save money on audible audiobooks

You should cancel your trial account before the time limit expires, even if you intend to keep buying books. Why? Well…

Cancel Your Account (Or At Least Pretend To) Every Once In A While

With Audible, as with other services, the company wants you to keep you paying on a regular basis. To incentivize you to keep your account active, they’ll often offer you a discount if you try to cancel at the end of the month. On multiple occasions after canceling a month-to-month subscription, Audible has offered me a 50% discount on the next three credits. That’s three audiobooks—generally $20-30 when bought individually—for under $8 each.

You can’t merely threaten to cancel your account every three months and score a half-price subscription forever. But unlike the initial free trial (which won’t work more than once for the same account), Audible’s customer retention system seems to reset periodically. You can certainly pull this move once or twice a year to score some cheap credits, especially if it’s been a while since you’ve had an active subscription. And don’t worry: even if you’re not offered a discount, there’s no penalty for canceling and subscribing again immediately.

Watch For Sales On Audible Credits

In addition to the standard free trial, Audible will often offer a discounted limited subscription for “new” subscribers. That “new” is in quotation marks because despite having an on-and-off subscription for years, I’ve managed to sign up for these discounts on an inactive subscription multiple times.

How to save money on audible audiobooks

These discounted initial subscriptions are often $5 for three months, a 66% discount. Sometimes they require you to be an Amazon Prime subscriber, sometimes not. But you can combine them with the “threaten to cancel” technique above to score half a dozen audiobooks for just over $35 (versus $75 for six standard Audible credits, or $100-180 versus buying major audiobooks at standard prices).

Shopping blogs and discount sites like Slickdeals and Groupon are places that generally feature these discounted limited subscriptions. Check in on them on a regular basis, or follow them on social media. “Prime Day” generally has at least one major discount for Amazon Prime subscribers, and sometimes Audible will offer currently-subscribed members one to three extra credits for an immediate, discounted rate.

Keep Audible’s Emails Enabled

Yeah, spam emails are annoying. But If you’re looking for discounts on Audible audiobooks, you might want to let them through anyway. The reason is that in addition to standard credit token sales, Audible also sells standard audiobooks at regular prices, available to purchase whether you’re subscribed to monthly credits or not.

And just like any other conventional retailer, Audible often has sales on its standard, non-credit prices. You’ll see periodic discounts on individual books, but what you’re really looking for is big sale events that will offer dramatic discounts on hundreds of books at once, ensuring there will be at least a few that match your listening interests. Often these titles are discounted by up to 75% versus their regular prices, coming in well below even the rough $15-per-book that a monthly credit scores you.

Above is an order I made in July: four books for about $28 total, during one of Audible’s standard price sales, all paid for with an immediate charge instead of Audible monthly credits. If you checked the regular prices today, those four books would cost about $91 together. Not bad.

How to save money on audible audiobooks

In addition to individual discounts and large-scale sales, Audible will often offer discounts via email or credits for actions like pre-orders or writing reviews. The site will also let you know if a book you might be interested in is part of a promotion like the Daily Discount. It’s well worth the occasional clutter in your inbox.

Check Your Kindle Books For Discounts

People who enjoy digital audiobooks generally enjoy ebooks as well. If you have a book in your Amazon Kindle library that’s also offered as an Audible audiobook, you can often “upgrade” with an additional Audible purchase at a significant discount off the price of the audiobook alone. Check your Kindle app on your phone in the “More” section to find these offers.

How to save money on audible audiobooks

The combined price of the ebook and audiobook is generally around the same, so purchasing the ebook specifically for a discount usually doesn’t make sense. But if you’ve picked up the Kindle book on sale, or if you’re just looking to enjoy an older book you haven’t read in a while in audio form, it’s worth a look. Independent authors who publish their books digitally (and usually very cheaply) often offer audiobook upgrades for just a few dollars. This comes with the bonus of being able to switch between the ebook and narrated audiobook at any time, with your progressed synced.

Audible is an expensive service. The most popular membership starts at $15 per month, where you get one credit, which you can use to buy any 1 book from Audible library. P lus there is 30% discount on other Audiobooks.

#4 Use Secret Silver Subscription Plan to Save Money on Audible

Audible has a secret plan that costs $15 every two months, and you’ll get 6 credits in a year instead of 12 meaning you’ll be charged every alternative month.

For some strange reasons, Audible doesn’t advertise this silver plan on their website. But if you don’t read much and are happy with 6 credit a year instead of 12, ask the customer support to enroll you in to the silver plan.

Now, some of you may be wondering, why use silver plan? When you can cancel your subscription and restart it every alternate month. Well, other than the simple waste of time, If you cancel your Audible subscription, you lose all the unused credit and also don’t get 30% discounts on other Audiobooks. However, with that silver subscription, you get to keep the unused credits, and maybe even buy the cheaper book which is less than $15, in the alternate month, when you have no credits.

They also send notification about special holiday deals on Audible. For instance, at the time of writing this post, Audible is offering the gold subscription for $5 per month for next 3 month, instead of regular $15. And interesting thing is, you can’t find these information anywhere on the homepage. However, if you are subscribed to special deals, you’ll get email notification.

Becoming an Audible member was a life-changing habit for me. I now read more books than ever and find that I am using my fringe hours doing more of what I love.

Because I love to listen to audiobooks AND save money, I’m constantly looking for affordable ways to add to my audio book library. Here are 10 helpful tips for saving money on Audible.

10 Ways to Save Money on Audible

Try Audible for free and get two free books

This is a simple one. If you don’t have an audible account, you can try it for free and get two free audiobooks . You have nothing to lose – and you might end up like me and become a convert for life. If you don’t know where to begin, a few favorite audiobooks I like to recommend include:

Buy Kindle deals and add the Audible option

Another great way to get affordable audible books is to add the Whispersync option when buying Kindle deals. Here’s how it works:

How to save money on audible audiobooks

  • A Kindle book goes on sale. The book above is on sale for $1.99.
  • Amazon gives you the Whispersync option to add the audio book for a discounted price when you buy the Kindle book. As you can see, it is just $3.99 in the example above.
  • You buy both the Kindle and the audiobook for one low price.

Whispersync allows you to seamlessly go back and forth between reading the Kindle version and listening to the audio version of the book.

I often will buy a kindle book for $1.99 – $2.99, then add the audio book for $2.99 or $3.99. Getting both versions for $5 – $7 is a great price. Modern Mrs. Darcy posts kindle deals every day and always includes the audio book price, so this is a useful way to find some deals.

Check your current Kindle books for Whispersync options

This is a great trick! Often, only a Kindle version of a book will be on sale, so I will just buy that book. But later, the deal for Whispersync becomes available.

How to save money on audible audiobooks

To check for current deals, go here, sign into your Amazon account, and Amazon will scan your current Kindle library for any audiobook upgrades available. I tend to upgrade when the price is $3.99 or less.

Pay attention to daily deals and special sales

Audible offers many, many deals! Visit the site daily to see what offers are available. A different book goes on sale every day, and they will often do special sales like their recent two books for the price of one.

Only buy audiobooks with credits that are more than $14.95

Since you are likely paying $14.95 for Audible subscription credits, don’t buy books with credits that are under this price point.

Use your rollover credits

Depending on the plan you have, Audible will let you rollover your credits. However, the number varies depending on the plan.

Add books to your wishlist

Audible will let you know when books on your wishlist are on sale, so be sure to keep your wishlist filled with good books.

Go through the steps to almost cancel your membership

I recently did this myself and it totally worked! You will then be offered a special incentive to stay a member.

To do this, be sure you have used all your credits. Then, go to account settings and then scroll to the bottom to click cancel. You’ll be asked a question about why you’re canceling.

How to save money on audible audiobooks

Then the site will give you an offer to try to keep you. For me it was a $20 credit. Easy way to get a free or nearly free book.

Contact Audible’s customer service to get the “Silver” membership

If you find that you are getting more credits than you can use, you can use the call or customer service chat feature to get the Silver membership, which will downgrade your membership to one credit every other month. I was a Gold customer, which provides one credit for a book each month, but found that, because I so often take advantage of Kindle/Whispersync deals, I didn’t need a credit every month.

You cannot change your membership to Silver through the website. You must contact customer service, but it is a quick and easy way to stay an Audible member and save money.

Return an audio book if you don’t like it

You have one-year to return a book that you don’t like, no questions asked. I have returned multiple books in the past eighteen months and never had a problem. Audible will reimburse you in whatever way you paid for the book.

How to save money on audible audiobooks

Julie Eickhoff has been working from home doing voice-overs since 2011. She has narrated and produced around 100 audiobooks and is an Audible Approved Producer. She has worked on a wide variety of audio projects and her voice has been used by Samsung, Best Western, GE, and many other big brands. Read on to see how this mom makes money narrating audiobooks from home.

How to save money on audible audiobooksTell Us How You Got Into Doing Voice-Over Work.

Well for starters, I’m from Iowa. I have a BS degree in English and Secondary Education. Out of college, I was a middle school English teacher for one (really long) year. My career from there has been kind of crazy thanks to wonderful mentors and people who encouraged me to try new things.

Over the years, I have been an Employee Relations Manager at a Bank, the Chief Meteorologist at a TV Station (I went back to school for meteorology), co-hosted a morning radio show, I was an Advertising Executive at a TV station and a Realtor. While I was a Realtor, I also became a mother which led me down the trail of figuring out how to work from home.

And is where I currently am, working from home doing voice-overs!

How Did You Get Involved Teaching People How To Work From Home Doing Voice-Overs?

While I was a Realtor (and working 24/7) my husband starting traveling a lot and we had a baby at home. I reached my breaking point of stress. There was no way I could work as much as I did, manage the household, and have any meaningful time with my family.

I knew I needed to come up with a way to work from home. My broadcasting career came in handy here. I knew that voice artists were working from home and I knew I could do the work. I contacted a friend who knew about the biz, ordered my equipment, and started learning everything I could. The learning curve was steep and long. But eventually, I had a legitimate business and it’s been working out great ever since.

Along the way, I’ve had lots of friends and family ask how they too could learn how to do voice-overs. I decided to put my teaching, my on-camera skills, and my voice-over skills to work together and I developed the course, “Work From Home Doing Voice-Overs.”

What Do People Learn During Your Free Training Series?

The free course, Intro to Voice-Overs, will show interested students what’s involved in becoming a voice artist. It covers on a basic level what equipment you’ll need (which is surprisingly inexpensive!), your recording space in your home, how voice artists get paid and lots more. The goal of the free course is to give students enough information for them to know if this is a path they want to go down.

What are Some of the Benefits of Being a Voice-Over Artist?

Where do I begin? You can work from home, the flexibility is amazing, it’s creative, you get to run your own business, you can do it on the side of full-time.

I love being home when my daughter gets home from school, I love being there during holiday breaks and summer, I love not having to commute in bad weather (I live in Minneapolis now – we have loads of snow!), I love the ease of scheduling doctor appointments, my dog loves having me home. I have time to exercise and cook meals. I feel in control of my life, which reduces stress for everyone in my family.

Is Voice Acting for Everyone?

Probably not everyone, but gone are the days when the only voices you hear are booming male voices on the radio. We need all kinds of voices. Listen to all the places where you hear voices… web videos, telephone systems, movie theater ads, e-learning modules, audiobooks, podcasts, explainer videos, tutorials, video games, live events, etc. We need male, female, child, high, low, soft, loud, accents, motherly, salesy, sweet, motivating and on and on and on.

How Much Can the Average Voice-Over Artist Earn?

Voice artists are paid per project and the range can be quite wide depending on the usage of the project. A voice-over on a commercial that runs nationally is entirely different than a voice-over for a corporate office that is only going to be used internally. Many voice artists like to get their feet wet with audiobooks. So I will use that as an example.

With audiobooks, you can get paid two ways or a combination of both. There are royalties (where you get paid a portion every time the audiobook sells) or you can get paid per finished hour for narrating and producing the audiobook. Rates vary here, but you can easily find projects that pay $100-$200 per finished hour. So a 5-hour audiobook with a rate of $200 per finished hour would be $1,000.

How to save money on audible audiobooks

Do You Primarily Narrate Audio Books, or Do You Work on Other Types of Project Too?

I’ve done a ton of audiobooks and will continue to do so, but I also do lots of other types of work… e-learning modules, radio commercials, movie theater ads, and telephone follow-up surveys.

Is There Anything Else You Would Like Readers to Know?

If you’re wanting to find a way to work from home and/or if anyone has ever told you that you have a nice voice, going through the free intro course will give you a great idea if this career is a possibility for you. Sign up for the free course, it won’t take much time, and then decide if you want to proceed.

If you do, then the full course, Work from Home doing Voice-Overs will be perfect for you. It takes you step-by-step through every part of getting up and running. I took all my research and experience and made it efficient for students to get equipment, set up their recording space, learn how to use recording software, practice mic skills, recording skills and so much more.

It’s easy to follow and fun. When you’re finished, you’re ready to move forward and I’m always willing to answer questions and help you out.

Thanks to Julie Eickhoff for sharing her story!

How to save money on audible audiobooks

“We usually listen to audiobooks from a lot of free sources like our library and the free audiobook channels. But sometimes we can’t find our favorite books or narrators. So we are considering to buy some audiobooks from Audible sometimes. Do I have to have a subscription account to do that?” – Asked by Bella Wright.

Absolutely not. According to the Audible customer support, users are recommended to subscribe to a membership $14.95/month to get 1 credit every month as well as get discounts on buying extra books. Or users can buy the books at their original prices. But both ways are still a little too expensive for users who only buy books now from then. You may not want to pay the extra subscription fee or get the book at the original price. Good news is that there are a lot of other better ways to buy books with big discounts and I will show you the top 3 ways one by one.
