How to scan with microsoft defender antivirus on windows 10

Windows Defender automatically performs background scans during your PC’s idle moments, but doesn’t include an easy way to schedule a full scan. There is a way to do it, though.

Starting with Windows 8, Windows Defender came as a built-in antivirus app, replacing the standalone Microsoft Security Essentials that came before. Security Essentials provided an easy way to schedule a scan through the app’s interface, but that ability went away in Windows Defender. Instead, Windows Defender performs partial scans during times when your PC is idle. If you keep your PC turned off when you’re not using it—or you put it to sleep and have it set to not wake up for regular maintenance—you can still schedule a scan using the Windows Task Scheduler. And you can make that scheduled scan a one-off or regular thing.

In Windows 10, hit Start, type “task scheduler,” and then click the result or hit Enter. In Windows 8, you’ll need to type “schedule tasks” instead.

In the “New Trigger” window make sure “On a schedule” is selected on the “Begin the task” drop-down menu. You can set the scan to run one time or to recur daily, weekly, or monthly. When you’ve set up the schedule you like, make sure the “Enabled” option at the bottom is checked and then click “OK.”

There are also a couple of other useful options on the “Conditions” tab. If you’re on a laptop, you might want select the “Start the task only if the computer is on AC power” and “Stop if the computer switches to battery power” options to prevent the task from running your battery down unexpectedly. Also, select the “Wake the computer to run this task” if you generally put your PC to sleep when not using it. With this option enabled, Windows can wake the PC, run the scan, and then put the PC back to sleep. When you’re done setting the options you want, click OK.

You can now exit Task Scheduler and rely on Windows Defender to run its scans according to the schedule you set.

You can run an on-demand scan on individual endpoints. These scans will start immediately, and you can define parameters for the scan, such as the location or type. When you run a scan, you can choose from among three types: Quick scan, full scan, and custom scan. In most cases, use a quick scan. A quick scan looks at all the locations where there could be malware registered to start with the system, such as registry keys and known Windows startup folders.

Combined with always-on, real-time protection, which reviews files when they are opened and closed, and whenever a user navigates to a folder, a quick scan helps provide strong protection against malware that starts with the system and kernel-level malware. In most cases, a quick scan is sufficient and is the recommended option for scheduled or on-demand scans. Learn more about scan types.

Microsoft Defender Antivirus runs in the context of the LocalSystem account when performing a local scan. For network scans, it uses the context of the device account. If the domain device account doesn’t have appropriate permissions to access the share, the scan won’t work. Ensure that the device has permissions to the access network share.

In addition to always-on, real-time protection and on-demand antivirus scans, you can set up regular, scheduled antivirus scans. You can configure the type of scan, when the scan should occur, and if the scan should occur after a protection update or when an endpoint is not being used. You can also set up special scans to complete remediation actions if needed.

What do you want to do?

  • Learn about quick scans, full scans, and custom scans
  • Use Group Policy to schedule antivirus scans
  • Use Windows PowerShell to Schedule antivirus scans
  • Use Windows Management Instrumentation to schedule antivirus scans

Keep the following points in mind

By default, Microsoft Defender Antivirus checks for an update 15 minutes before the time of any scheduled scans. You can Manage the schedule for when protection updates should be downloaded and applied to override this default.

If a device is unplugged and running on battery during a scheduled full scan, the scheduled scan will stop with event 1002, which states that the scan stopped before completion. Microsoft Defender Antivirus will run a full scan at the next scheduled time.

Quick scan, full scan, and custom scan

When you set up scheduled scans, you can specify whether the scan should be a full or quick scan. In most cases, a quick scan is recommended.

Combined with always-on, real-time protection, which reviews files when they are opened and closed, and whenever a user navigates to a folder, a quick scan helps provide strong protection against malware that starts with the system and kernel-level malware.

A full scan can take a few hours or days to complete, depending on the amount and type of data that needs to be scanned.

When the full scan is complete, new security intelligence is available, and a new scan is then required to make sure that no other threats are detected with the new security intelligence.

By default, quick scans run on mounted removable devices, such as USB drives.

How do I know which scan type to choose?

Use the following table to choose a scan type.

What else do I need to know about quick and full scans?

Malicious files can be stored in locations that are not included in a quick scan. However, always-on real-time protection reviews all files that are opened and closed, and any files that are in folders that are accessed by a user. The combination of real-time protection and a quick scan helps provide strong protection against malware.

On-access protection with cloud-delivered protection helps ensure that all the files accessed on the system are being scanned with the latest security intelligence and cloud machine learning models.

When real-time protection detects malware and the extent of the affected files is not determined initially, Microsoft Defender Antivirus initiates a full scan as part of the remediation process.

A full scan can detect malicious files that were not detected by other scans, such as a quick scan. However, a full scan can take a while and use valuable system resources to complete.

If a device is offline for an extended period of time, a full scan can take longer to complete.

Email scanning limitations

Email scanning enables scanning of email files used by Outlook and other mail clients during on-demand and scheduled scans. Embedded objects within email (such as attachments and archived files) are also scanned. The following file format types can be scanned and remediated:

  • DBX
  • MBX
  • MIME

PST files used by Outlook 2003 or older (where the archive type is set to non-unicode) are also scanned, but Microsoft Defender Antivirus cannot remediate threats that are detected inside PST files.

If Microsoft Defender Antivirus detects a threat inside an email message, it will show you the following information to assist you in identifying the compromised email, so you can remediate the threat manually:

  • Email subject
  • Attachment name

Scanning mapped network drives

On any OS, only the network drives that are mapped at system level, are scanned. User-level mapped network drives aren’t scanned. User-level mapped network drives are those that a user maps in their session manually and using their own credentials.

Windows 10 comes with the Microsoft Defender Antivirus security feature to protect your computer and data from virtually any type of malware and hackers. Although this is one of the best antivirus software, it’s not perfect, and sometimes, specially crafted malicious code can find its way into the system and rapidly take control and cause irreversible damage.

This is not specific to Microsoft Defender. This can occur with any third-party antivirus you install on your computer. However, if your computer gets infected with a nasty hard-to-move malware when Windows 10 is loaded, you can use the Microsoft Defender Offline scan option. The offline option is an automated feature capable of running when the system isn’t running, which allows the anti-malware engine to detect and remove most viruses more easily.

In this Windows 10 guide, we will walk you through the steps to perform an offline malware scan using the Windows Defender Antivirus tool.

How to use Defender Antivirus Offline scan on Windows 10

To scan and remove viruses with the Microsoft Defender Antivirus Offline scan feature, use these steps:

Microsoft Defenderthe security software built into Windows, has come a long way from its beginnings as “Security Essentials” and has improved in detection ability and degree, system load, and usability to catch up with other free solutions.

If in the days of Windows 7, Microsoft’s solution was «the worst antivirus» of those available and specialized media did not recommend its use, the situation has changed and today it is an effective solution against most cybersecurity threats, viruses, worms, Trojans and all kinds of malware that accumulate week after week trying to infect computers and networks .

Simply, Microsoft Defender today has enough features for the user to walk no need to buy third-party solutions. And we talk about the free ones, because the comprehensive business security solutions They continue to provide a higher level in all scenarios.

    Microsoft Defender and Windows 11

Microsoft has been improving its security software and we expect more news in the next Windows 11 22H2 update, with changes at the user interface level to integrate it more into the system and with greater cross-platform capacity for Windows 11, iOS, Android and macOS.

Until it comes Defender is included in Windows 11 as part of the same system, is integrated with the system and, like the rest of the installed solutions, anticipates the introduction of malware, detects it and, where appropriate, eliminates it thanks to its proactive capabilities. But also the user can use it to actively scan both internal and external connected storage drives for malware. In this practical basic, we review a use that does not differ from the rest of free antivirus.

The fourth option “Microsoft Defender Offline Scan”, it will restart your computer and scan it before system loads. This mode is responsible for detecting the type of persistent malware loaded at system startup or solving security threats that even prevent the computer from starting. Windows will boot into a special recovery environment and like any antivirus, it will update the virus base, scan the system and if it detects malware it will require user action for removal.

You can try it, although for these «off-line» tasks there are more efficient solutions like the 10 free rescue antivirus against infected Windows machines that we recently offered you.

If you don’t want to… because there are free solutions that -in my opinion- are still more capable than this Defender. In this case, the Microsoft antivirus will be disabled so as not to penalize system resources, although you can use it whenever you want in the way we have seen.

If a third-party anti-malware system is activated, Windows Defender will automatically turn off in favor of the third-party solution, Microsoft said. Two other technologies, Smart Screen and App Rep, also are present to help determine if a file or app should be considered as potential malware, based on a reputation system Microsoft developed.

Your decision doesn’t have to be permanent but can change according to your situation and needs.

That’s it! You are done. This is how you can perform a full scan on Windows 10 via Microsoft Defender.

So, that’s all from us for today! You no longer need to rely on a third-party security suite to perform a full scan. Windows defender is powerful enough to find and remove common malware. I hope this article helped you! Please share it with your friends also.

    1. Open Windows Security.
    2. Click on Virus & threat protection.
    3. Under the “Current threats” section, click the Scan options setting. Source: Windows Central
    4. Select the Microsoft Defender Offline scan option. Source: Windows Central
    5. Click the Scan now button.
    6. Click the Scan button.

Once you complete the steps, Windows 11 will restart into the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), where the command-line version of Microsoft Defender Antivirus will run automatically without loading the system. The scan will detect and delete any hard-to-remove viruses it may find without user interaction. The offline scan will take around 10 minutes, then the computer will restart automatically.

    Review scan results

To review the scan information, use these steps:

    1. Open Windows Security.
    2. Click on Virus & threat protection.
    3. Under the “Current threats” section, click the Protection history setting. Source: Windows Central
    4. Confirm the scan actions and recommendations (if available). Source: Windows Central

If you don’t see any information in the history, then the antivirus couldn’t find anything on the computer.

It’s also important to pay attention to the items’ dates because the list includes all the recent actions, and sometimes, you may see things from previous scans or real-time detections.

Windows Defender is the built-in security solution in Windows 10. It provides basic protection against threats. Earlier versions of Windows like Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7 and Vista also had it but it was less efficient previously as it only scanned spyware and adware. In Windows 8 and Windows 10, Defender is based on the Microsoft Security Essentials app which offers better protection by adding full blown protection against all kinds of malware. Today, we will see how to schedule a scan in Windows Defender Antivirus in Windows 10.

Don’t be confused between Windows Defender and its related user interfaces such as Windows Defender Security Center. Windows Defender remains the built-in anti-virus software which provides real-time protection against threats based on malware definition files/signatures.

Whereas Windows Defender Security Center app is only a dashboard which allows you to track the protection state of several other Windows security technologies. It can be used to configure various security options like SmartScreen. Defender Security Center is what opens now when you click its icon in the system tray.

To schedule a new scan in Windows Defender in Windows 10, do the following.

    1. In the Start menu, go to Administrative Tools – Task Scheduler.
    2. In Task Scheduler go to Library – Microsoft – Windows – Windows Defender.
    3. Double click the task named “Windows Defender Scheduled Scan”.
    4. On the Triggers tab, and click/tap on the New button.
    5. Specify the type as “On a schedule” and set the desired time intervals.
    6. Click OK in all open windows and you are done.

Alternatively, you can create a custom scheduled task with a custom schedule.

    Use one of following commands:

This will start Windows Defender in console mode.

To see the GUI during the scan, use the command:

Sometimes it can be very difficult to remove malware and other malicious software when you are signed in to your device. However, if you have Windows 10, you can use the Microsoft Defender Offline feature to scan and remove all kinds of malware including viruses, rootkit, ransomware, and other malicious software no matter how tough they are.

Offline virus scanning has long been a part of Microsoft Defender Antivirus and allows the antivirus to run without Windows 10 loading during the startup process. This is especially useful because if your device is infected with a certain type of persistent malware, it is extremely complicated to remove while Windows is fully loaded.

This guide will teach you how to use the offline virus scanning feature to remove rootkit, ransomware and other malicious viruses on Windows 10.

Run a Defender offline virus scan on Windows 10

To run an offline virus scan to remove severe malware using Microsoft Defender, follow the steps below:

    Open Windows Security.

    Click Virus & threat protection.

In the Current Threats section, click Scan Options.

Enable the Microsoft Defender Offline Scan option.

    Click the Scan Now button.

    Click the Scan button.

After completing the steps, the device will boot into the system recovery environment and the Microsoft Defender antivirus will do a full virus scan. If the anti-malware detects viruses, rootkits, or other types of malware, it will be removed automatically.

After the scan, you can find the results of the Microsoft Defender offline scan under Windows Security> Virus & threat protection> Protection history.

To scan your Windows 10 device for threats:

    1. Search for “Windows Security” in the Start menu and launch the app.
    2. Click “Virus & threat protection”.
    3. Press the “Quick scan” button and wait for the scan to complete.

Windows 10 comes with built-in antivirus protection in the form of Windows Security (previously known as Windows Defender). If you suspect your device has a problem, you can use the Windows Security Centre to run a virus scan which could uncover any dangerous files.

You can open the Windows Security Centre from its icon in the system tray – look for a white shield. Alternatively, launch it by typing “Windows Security” into the Start menu. Prior to the Windows 10 October 2018 update, the app was called Windows Defender Security Centre, so open this if you’re using an older Windows release.

How to scan with microsoft defender antivirus on windows 10

From the app’s home screen, click the “Virus & threat protection” tile to open the antivirus page. Click the “Quick scan” button under “Current threats” to run a scan of your device. This may take a while to complete but you can keep using your PC while it runs. You’ll get a notification when the scan is finished.

How to scan with microsoft defender antivirus on windows 10

Once the scan has completed, the “Current threats” screen will display the outcome of the scan. If threats were found, you’ll be able to get their details using the “Threat history” button.

If the quick scan doesn’t find any problems, you can run a more thorough check by clicking the “Scan options” link. Here, you can choose to run a “Full scan” which will check every single file, as well as any running programs. There’s also an option to run a custom scan within directories you define – use this option if you’ve already identified a suspect file and want to confirm whether it’s a threat.

How to scan with microsoft defender antivirus on windows 10

Windows security has come a long way with Windows 10 and the built-in virus scanning is now quite comprehensive. Although it’s still not the most robust solution, Windows Security is an adequate protection system as long as you remain savvy about potential threats – don’t click suspect links in emails or on websites! Windows regularly runs quick scans in the background and continually monitors your device for new threats in real-time, so you shouldn’t need to run manual scans on a regular basis.

You never know where a flash drive has been.

Always best to scan a USB flash drive before using it.

Did you know Windows Defender could be configured to scan a USB stick automatically the moment it is plugged in? Below are the steps to configure Microsoft Windows to automatically scan a USB drive↓.

Windows Defender is not configured for automatic scanning when the operating system is installed. Not sure why, as malware spreading via USB flash memory is one of the more prolific tech issues of the day. Our only guess is Microsoft giving us free will to make our own decisions, after all, scanning takes time and why not let the user choose when this is done.

This tutorial will take about three minutes to setup. I would suggest read the rest of this article and when done, go back and perform the few steps required to make the Windows Defender scan for USB flash drives.

We are going to make a Group Policy to scan USB flash drives using Windows Defender.

Let us run the Group Policy editor.

Press the Windows Key + R

Type gpedit.msc and press Enter or OK.

Look for the Administrative Templates under the top Computer Configuration directory, expand this directory (folder)

Scroll down to Windows Components, expand it

In that directory scroll down more and look for Windows Defender Antivirus, expand it

Finally, look for the Scan folder and click that folder.

On the right side of the dialogue box you will see additional settings, search for the Scan removable drives and double click that setting

This setting is disabled by default. Please click the radial enable button to enable this setting for your Windows computer.

Click Apply in the bottom right and then click OK.

How to scan with microsoft defender antivirus on windows 10

That is it. Your Windows computer will now automatically scan USB flash drives using Windows Defender.

Alternatively, you can insert a USB stick and right click the drive letter and select Scan with Windows Defender but the problem here, is the USB could have already done it’s virus work before you had a chance to scan for malicious code.

How to scan with microsoft defender antivirus on windows 10

Threat actors can take advantage of a weakness that affects Microsoft Defender antivirus on Windows to learn locations excluded from scanning and plant malware there.

The issue has persisted for at least eight years, according to some users, and affects Windows 10 21H1 and Windows 10 21H2.

    Lax permissions

Like any antivirus solution, Microsoft Defender lets users add locations (local or on the network) on their systems that should be excluded from malware scans.

People commonly make exclusions to prevent antivirus from affecting the functionality of legitimate applications that are erroneously detected as malware.

Since the list of scanning exceptions differs from one user to another, it is useful information for an attacker on the system, since this gives them the locations where they can store malicious files without fear of being detected.

Security researchers discovered that the list of locations excluded from Microsoft Defender scanning is unprotected and any local user can access it.

Regardless of their permissions, local users can query the registry and learn the paths that Microsoft Defender is not allowed to check for malware or dangerous files.

How to scan with microsoft defender antivirus on windows 10

Antonio Cocomazzi, a SentinelOne threat researcher who is credited for reporting the RemotePotato0 vulnerability, points out that there is no protection for this information, which should be considered sensitive, and that running the “reg query” command reveals everything that Microsoft Defender is instructed not to scan, be it files, folders, extensions, or processes.

How to scan with microsoft defender antivirus on windows 10

Another security expert, Nathan McNulty, confirmed that the issue is present on Windows 10 versions 21H1 and 21H2 but it does not affect Windows 11.

McNulty also confirmed that one can grab the list of exclusions from the registry tree with entries that store Group Policy settings. This information is more sensitive as it provides exclusions for multiple computers.

A security architect versed in protecting the Microsoft stack, McNulty warns that Microsoft Defender on a server has “automatic exclusions that get enabled when specific roles or features are installed” and these do not cover custom locations.

Although a threat actor needs local access to get the Microsoft Defender exclusions list, this is far from being a hurdle. Many attackers are already on compromised corporate networks looking for a way to move laterally as stealthily as possible.

By knowing the list of Microsoft Defender exclusions, a threat actor that already compromised a Windows machine can then store and execute malware from the excluded folders without fear of being spotted.

In tests done by BleepingComputer, a malware strain executed from an excluded folder ran unhindered on the Windows system and triggered no alert from Microsoft Defender.

We used a sample of Conti ransomware and when it executed from a normal location Microsoft Defender kicked in and blocked the malware.

After placing Conti malware in an excluded folder and running it from there, Microsoft Defender did not show any warning and did not take any action, allowing the ransomware to encrypt the machine.

This Microsoft Defender weakness is not new and has been highlighted publicly in the past by Paul Bolton:

A senior security consultant says that they noticed the issue about eight years ago and recognized the advantage it provided to a malware developer.

“Always told myself that if I was some kind of malware dev I would just lookup the WD exclusions and make sure to drop my payload in an excluded folder and/or name it the same as an excluded filename or extension” – Aura

Given that it’s been this long and Microsoft has yet to address the problem, network administrators should consult the documentation for properly configuring Microsoft Defender exclusions on servers and local machines via group policies.

Windows Defender is the Antivirus which is inbuild in windows 10, Windows Defender is the next generation protection component of Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection (Microsoft Defender ATP), Windows Defender comes with the most advanced feature, which starts from the design a panel displaying its various modules and their status. You can find the seven protecting areas of windows defender below.

    1. Virus & threat protection – This feature runs scans, detects threats, and downloads updates to help identify new viruses and malware. On version 1709 , this section also offers configuration settings for controlled folder access.
    2. Account Protection – When you sign in to Windows, the new Account Protection pillar protects your identity. You will be encouraged to set up Windows Fingerprint, Hello Face, or PIN sign-in. If applicable, Account Protection will also notify you if Dynamic Lock has stopped working because your PC’s Bluetooth is inactive.
    3. Firewall & network protection – In this area, you will be able to manage the Windows Defender Firewall settings. You can also monitor what’s happening with your Internet connections and networks.
    4. App & browser control – This feature allows you to use Windows Defender Smart Screen, which can protect your computer against potentially dangerous files, sites, apps, and downloads. Moreover, it provides a customization exploit protection feature.
    5. Device Security – You can get a better insight into the security features integrated with your Windows computer. You can access this area to manage your PC’s built-in security features. Moreover, you can use it to generate security status reports.
    6. Device performance & health – Access this page to get reports on your computer’s performance and health. This feature can also help you keep your PC clean and up-to-date with the latest version of your operating system.
    7. Family options – If you’re a parent, you can use this feature to manage your children’s online experience.

From these seven protecting areas, Scanning the computer is the part of the virus and Protection feature, Which is very important for any antivirus, Once the defender is enabled the system scan will happen automatically, Sometimes at the time of scanning you will receive the error from Defender that the “items are skipped from the scanning”. This error is mainly caused by incomplete scan areas. The Network scan is not enabled on your machine. Network scan is the part of the Virus and protection feature, This article will Guide you to enable the Network scanning in Windows Defender on Windows 10.

How to scan with microsoft defender antivirus on windows 10

Microsoft has recently addressed a weakness in the Microsoft Defender Antivirus on Windows that allowed attackers to plant and execute malicious payloads without triggering Defender’s malware detection engine.

This security flaw [1, 2] affected the latest Windows 10 versions, and threat attackers could abuse it since at least 2014.

As BleepingComputer previously reported, the flaw resulted from lax security settings for the “HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Exclusions” Registry key. This key contains the list of locations (files, folders, extensions, or processes) excluded from Microsoft Defender scanning.

Exploiting the weakness was possible because the Registry key was accessible by the ‘Everyone’ group, as shown in the image below.

This made it possible for local users (regardless of their permissions) to access it via the command line by querying the Windows Registry.

Security expert Nathan McNulty also warned that users could also grab the list of exclusions from registry trees with entries storing Group Policy settings, which is much more sensitive info as it provides exclusions for multiple computers on a Windows domain.

After finding out what folders were added to the antivirus exclusion list, attackers could deliver and execute malware from an excluded folder on a compromised Windows system without having to fear that its malicious payload will be detected and neutralized.

By exploiting this weakness, BleepingComputer could execute a sample of Conti ransomware from an excluded folder and encrypt a Windows system without any warnings or signs of detection from Microsoft Defender.

Security weakness addressed silently by Microsoft

This is no longer be possible given Microsoft has now addressed the weakness via a silent update, as spotted by Dutch security expert SecGuru_OTX on Thursday.

SentinelOne threat researcher Antonio Cocomazzi confirmed that the flaw can no longer be used on Windows 10 20H2 systems after installing the February 2022 Patch Tuesday Windows updates.

Some users are seeing the new permission change after installing the February 2022 Patch Tuesday Windows cumulative updates.

On the other hand, Will Dormann, a vulnerability analyst for CERT/CC, noted that he received the permissions change without installing any updates, indicating that the change could be added by both Windows updates and Microsoft Defender security intelligence updates.

As BleepingComputer was also able to confirm today, the permissions on Windows advanced security settings for Defender exclusions have indeed been updated, with the ‘Everyone’ group removed from the Registry key’s permissions.

On Windows 10 systems where this change has already rolled out, users are now required to have admin privileges to be able to access the list of exclusions via the command line or when adding them using the Windows Security settings screen.

The change rolled out since our previous report, but, at the moment, only Microsoft knows how it was pushed to affected Windows 10 systems (via Windows updates, Defender intelligence updates, or other means).

A Microsoft spokesperson was not available for comment when contacted by BleepingComputer earlier today.

How to scan with microsoft defender antivirus on windows 10

If you use Windows and browse the internet regularly, it is strongly recommended to use antivirus/security protection software. Windows 10 comes with built-in antivirus protection called Windows Defender/Security and it has matured into a good security solution over the past few years.

Windows Defender is one of the easiest ways to check your device for security issues and it allows you to perform the following scans:

    • Quick scan: This mode scans for threats and security issues in locations where malicious contents are commonly found.
    • Full Scan: This mode scans your entire PC for threats and security issues. It could take more than one hour depending on the number of files you have and hardware configuration. For example, the process is faster on PCs with SSD storage.
    • Custom Scan: This mode allows you to scan a folder of your choice for threats and security issues.
    • Windows Defender offline scan: This mode can help you detect viruses that can be difficult to remove during regular scans.

When and why you should use Windows Defender Offline Scan

If your PC is infected with persistent malware such as rootkits or especially stubborn malware, you should consider using Windows Defender Offline scan feature. This is because Windows Defender Offline is run when Windows is not started and thus the malware is not active and blocking security software.

During regular scans, you might also be prompted that malware was detected and that you should use the offline scan feature to remove it.

You can also manually trigger Windows Defender Offline scan if Windows Security app doesn’t issue an alert message.

Before you run Windows Defender Offline scan, connect the device to power, ensure that your user account has administrator rights, and that you have closed all apps and programs after saving the files.

    Perform Windows Defender Offline scan

To perform a Windows Defender Offline scan you need to perform the following steps:

    1. Open the Start menu and select Settings.
    2. Navigate to Update & Security ->Windows Security.
    3. Click on Virus & threat protection.

How to scan with microsoft defender antivirus on windows 10

Under Current threads, select Scan options.

How to scan with microsoft defender antivirus on windows 10

On the next page, select Windows Defender Offline scan.

How to scan with microsoft defender antivirus on windows 10

  • Select Scan now and Windows will prompt you to save any work before restarting the computer.
  • Windows 10 and your PC will now restart and boot into the Windows Recovery Environment where it will perform a quick scan using Windows Defender. This process will take up to 15 minutes to finish.

After the scan is finished, Windows will restart to the desktop where you can check the scan results by following these steps:

    1. Open Windows Security app.
    2. Click on Virus & threat protection.
    3. Under Current threats, select Scan options, and then open Threat history.
    4. Threat history page will have the scan results.

Windows Defender offline scan could be extremely helpful when detecting rootkits, a malicious program that cannot be seen on the computer during normal security scans or manual scans. If the scan detects a rootkit on your computer, but is unable to remove it, you can also try recommended anti-rootkit software.

Configure and run on-demand Microsoft Defender Antivirus scans

    Applies to:

    Platforms

[!IMPORTANT] Microsoft Defender Antivirus runs in the context of the LocalSystem account when performing a local scan. For network scans, it uses the context of the device account.
