Steam trading cards are basically free money. Assuming you own some games on Steam, you may have generated a Steam trading card without even realizing it-you can sell them on the community market for the price of Steam Wallet points, which can then be used to buy games.

Using the following method, I got at least $20 free Steam credit. It’s not a lot of money, but it’s one or two free games and hardly any work. How much you can get depends on how many Steam games you have-and whether they have cards available.

Steam Trading Card 101
Most of Steam trading cards sound like digital trading cards obtained by playing games. When playing a game, Steam will often automatically give you a card related to the game, on average about one card every twenty to thirty minutes. You also rarely have the opportunity to obtain the “foil” version of the card, which is less common and more valuable to collectors.

Collect a set of these trading cards and you can combine them to increase your “steam level”, get decorative “badges” for your Steam profile, and get stickers that can be used in Steam chats. Steam Level Up is a number worth showing off.

This is the cool part: even if you don’t care about all these meaningless rewards, others will do it. So you can sell your card on the Steam Community Market. Other Steam users will buy them from you, and you will get Steam wallet funds that can be used to purchase games. Valve and game developers will each profit from the Steam community market transactions, so everyone will win.

Unfortunately, selling trading cards can be an arduous process, especially when you have a lot of trading cards. Therefore, here are some tips to get that considerable amount of Steam funding without spending a lot of time.

Step 1: Open Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator

In order to list cards or other items on the Steam Community Market, Steam requires you to use Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator to protect your account. This is a feature in the Steam mobile app for iPhone, Android and Windows Phone, which protects your Steam account with the login code provided by the phone. This is a form of two-factor authentication, which can be a good thing anyway.

However, if you do not use this feature, for security reasons, the auction will be kept for 15 days. Download the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator app

In order to use the Steam Community Market to sell cards (or anything else), Valve requires that you set up two-factor authentication with its Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator app. You can find the app in the Google Play store, the iOS App Store, and the Microsoft Store. Sign in to the app with your Steam account to use it and activate two-factor authentication. Keep it handy — you’ll need it to confirm some actions when you try to sell cards.

Play some games, earn some cards

Not every game on Steam issues trading cards, but if you find games that have some, procuring a few is as easy as installing a game and playing. Cards drop after you’ve spent a certain amount of time playing the game, and there’s usually a limit on the number of drops per session — how many cards you can get depends on the game. To check if a game supports cards, check its store page under the list of features to see if it’s tagged as including Steam Trading Cards. That’s not completely foolproof — some games dish out cards even though it isn’t listed as a feature — but the designation is pretty reliable. You can also search Steam using the Steam Trading Cards tag to find more games with cards.

Find the cards you don’t want in your inventory

When cards are added to your account, they appear in your Steam inventory. You can find your inventory by hovering over your account name at the top of the Steam window and clicking “inventory” on the drop-down menu that appears. On the Inventory page, click the left-most “Steam” tab to see your cards. From there, you can select cards and find the ones you’re ready to get rid of on the market.

Clicking on a card allows you to read its description and find other info, including the number that have sold on the market in the last 24 hours, and what the lowest starting price is on the market.

List your card

When you’re ready to sell, click your card and scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen, to the bottom of the section on the right side that gives you information on the card. Beneath the information about the sales volume and starting price on the Community Market, you will see a button marked “Sell” that will get you started. When you click it, you’ll get a window that lets you set your price for the card, and shows you a graph of how many cards have sold lately, and at what price. Use that information to decide how much to ask for the card when you list it.

You can set your price in either one of two ways: How much money you will receive from the person buying your card, or how much they will pay in total. The two prices are different because Steam adds a small fee to every transaction on the Community Market, so the price the buyer pays is always a little higher than what you receive in Steam credit.

Confirm the listing

Now it’s time to grab your Steam Guard Authenticator app. Log in to the app and go to the “Confirmations” tab on the main menu, which you can access by tapping the three lines in the top left corner of the app. Find the listings you want to confirm and tap the big gray box on their right side, then click “Confirm Selected.” Once you hit that button, your card goes on the Community Market.

Check your listings

Once you post a card, it’s easy to find and view your listings or adjust as needed. To find them, hover over the “Community” tab on Steam to pull up the drop-down menu and hit “Market.” Steam will show your current active listings, which you can remove if you need to (and relist if you want to change prices), as well as your complete market history on another tab. Otherwise, that’s it — you have listed your Steam trading cards on the Community Market, and all that is left to do is wait for pennies’ worth of Steam credit to roll in.

What Are Steam Trading Cards?

Steam Trading Cards are entirely virtual. They only exist in your Steam profile and cannot be turned into physical rewards. So if you thought you’d be able to put them in binders to show your friends, you’re out of luck.

Each Steam Trading Card is part of a set. Collect a full set of Trading Cards and you can get rewards, like additional customization to your Steam profile. You can also sell them on the Steam Community Market for wallet funds, which you can then use towards purchases on Steam.

There are also special foil Trading Cards. You can collect a set of foil cards and turn them into a foil badge for your Steam profile. Foil cards are like shiny Pokémon cards: no different from the regular ones in function, but simply rarer and therefore higher value.

How to Get Steam Trading Cards

The main way to earn Trading Cards is by playing games on Steam. You can view a list of eligible games across the entire Store, along with eligible games within your library. This is also accessible in the Steam client via the Badges page, which appears beneath your username on the top menu.

In actuality, you don’t have to play the game, you just need to have it open. Simply logging time in a game is all you need to do to earn a Trading Card, and they will randomly drop into your account. If you want to go off and do something else, you’ll still be able to earn them.

In fact, there are ways to get Steam Trading Cards without even running the game. But where’s the fun in that?

The only difference is for free to play games. For approximately every $9 spent, you will get eligibility for a random card drop.

Once you finish playing a game and close it, you will be notified if you’ve received a Trading Card through the Steam messaging system. A new message is signified by the envelope in the top-right of the interface turning green.

Click the green envelope and click X new items in your inventory. This will take you to your inventory, where you can view more information about the card, such as its name and description.

How to Collect All Steam Trading Cards

It isn’t possible to earn all of a game’s Trading Cards just by playing it—only half. If a game has eight cards available, for example, you will only ever receive four of those by playing. However, you can receive duplicates, so you won’t necessarily get four unique cards.

Booster Packs

Once you’ve exhausted all of the free card drops, you can get more cards through booster packs. These are randomly granted as community members craft game badges.

Booster packs contain three random cards, though they might already be ones you own. Booster packs contain both basic and foil cards.

You must sign in to Steam each week to retain eligibility to receive a booster pack. Your chance of receiving one also increases alongside your Steam level.

Buy on the Community Market

Other players sell their unwanted cards on the Community Market and you can buy them using funds in your Steam wallet.

To find the cards you want quickly, go to the Badges page, click a game, then click Search the Market next to the desired card.

If it’s an uncommonly played game, you might find there are no cards currently listed or that they’re expensive. If that’s the case, you might be better off waiting a while because the price usually drops over time.

Trade With Friends

If you have duplicate cards, or cards for a game that you’re not interested in, you can trade with your friends. To do this, go to your friends list, click the dropdown arrow next to their name, and click Trading > Send a Trade Offer.

You can also go to the aforementioned Badges page and click Visit Trade Forum to see if a stranger is offering an acceptable exchange.

This is a good way of getting a solid deal because you don’t have to be bound by market rates. You don’t even have to trade card for card; you could exchange for an in-game item, for example.

What to Do With Steam Trading Cards

You can either choose to keep the cards and turn them into virtual rewards, or sell them on the Steam Community Market for money.

Craft a Badge

Once you have a full set of Trading Cards, you can turn them into a badge. This will display on your Steam profile and will also grant you rewards:

• A game-specific emoji to use in chats with friends.
• A game-specific background to customize your Steam profile.
• 100XP towards your Steam level; your Steam level determines profile customization options and how many people you can have on your friends list.
• A chance to get a discount code for another game.

If you get another set of cards for the same game, you can use them to upgrade the badge (up to fives times at most). This gives you 100XP and also changes the badge’s image and title.

Sell on the Community Market

If you’re not interested in badges or Steam levels or any of that, you can sell your Trading Cards on the Steam Community Market.

Cards have no set value. You can set whatever price you want, but whether someone is willing to pay that price is another matter. You will be able to make more money from a card if there’s someone in the community specifically seeking it out or if not many of them exist. Generally, the more popular a game is, the less valuable its cards.

Go into your inventory, select a card, and click Sell to begin the process. You will be able to see what the average price for the card is and how much Valve will take as their cut. When someone buys it, the money goes straight into your Steam wallet to use against future purchases.

I have had this idea, for a bit and after playing DotA 2 (which I hate, sometimes) that I could invest in Maya by partially funding it (I emphasize “partially”) with either steam trading cards or DotA 2 drops of apparel or booster packs from completing card sets for games besides DotA 2. The idea is to complete a PORTION of an education I failed at earlier in life (college failure in computer engineering) and get back to what I originally wanted to do.

In 1999, it was a little difficult to see where some aspects of hardware and software were going. Combining that with problems in my personal life, I failed at what had been a very good opportunity in college.

I intend to return to that. Part of it involves 3D design, which is something that Maya or a similar program would assist. The other part is college, and I don’t intend to fund college tuition with 5 cent DotA items, however a $30.00 a month piece of software might be helpful.

If the sub can be paid by Steam Wallet (I have no idea if this is the case) then it’s of course theoretically possible. But in practical terms it sounds very unlikely to me.

The maths is pretty simple. $30 a month on cards at “10-11 cents a card” is 272-300 card sales in a month. I know you only said partially fund it, but how many cards would you say you get in a month? I should be getting slightly more booster packs than you and I still only get one every few weeks if I’m lucky.

Dota 2 I can’t talk about, but I’d advise that if you’re willing to do something you hate to earn money, an actual job would seem to be more effective.

I also wish to take the 5 or 6 dollars a month I make off of free trading cards and dumb dota clothes and put it to something useful. in this SidAlpha Video, SidAlpha talks about how Valve may be doing something that could stop or interrupt Steam Trading Card Farming Generators by preventing them from generating keys.

This got me thinking. from my understanding you get Trading Cards either playing the game which gets you only so many, the rest you then need to create booster packs with Gems or buy them from the marketplace with your own funds. but what i don’t get is

1) the name for this practice implies using Steam Trading Cards to make money, however i can’t see how “developers” can make money as,

• you have to originally own the card you’re selling on the market place
• when it’s brought it goes to your wallet which you can’t transfer Steam wallet fund off Steam

and i wouldn’t think Valve would allow “developers” to create any number of trading cards for their games at will then sell them because this is obviously very easily abused

2) in the video SidAlpha mentions that reducing/blocking Key generation may have an impact to those who use Steam Trading Card Farming Generators, noting that a certain user base is actually worried it. but i’m not sure how key generation fits in to the scam.

Developers get a small percentage of trading card sales, that’s how they make money on trading cards. It doesn’t matter that the money earned by the seller of the card is locked up in a given account’s Steam Wallet, nor does it matter that you only get a fixed number of drops before needing to create booster packs, et cetera. Those mechanisms prevent a player from trivially generating an unlimited amount of money in their Steam wallet. They don’t provide guard rails for developers looking to abuse the system.

But this is, in fact, exactly what they did. Probably not intentionally, but they permitted it all the same:

Developers can generate an unlimited number of keys for their games. They can also create an unlimited number of throwaway Steam accounts, because Steam accounts are free to create. Accounts earn trading cards simply by running a given game for a specific period of time. In this fashion, an unscrupulous developer can generate an unlimited number of trading cards for all of their games by making throwaway accounts, generating keys for those accounts, and simply launching and idling in their games. Simple bots can accomplish this without much effort.

Since the developer earns a small amount of money on every trading card sold, they can then sell off stock of their unlimited number of cards and take the profits.

The only serious hurdle to overcome here, before Valve made changes to attempt to address this, was that you needed to get your games on Steam in the first place. But once you’d overcome that the first time it was much easier to generate a bunch of “asset flip” games to create a multiplicative factor on the amount of money one could “farm” this way.

Now, the only way to make some money is by trading steam keys (preferrably by selling them on G2A, Kinguin, etc.) or by trading cards (but you need to have a loooooooooooooooooot of accounts in order to actually get profit by them).

How Steam sees Creativerse

In Steams eyes Creativerse is what counts as a F2P game with and in game store that can use real world money to buy things. How this affects your ability to get Trading Cards is you have to first buy things within that very storefront for a certain cash value (does not need to be all in one setting or a single item) and you can get the ability for the game to drop a SINGLE randomized card when playing from then on.
That Value is normaly 1 card for every $9-10usd spent in the store.

Do note, you will be spending it from your steam wallet amount so make sure you have the amount already added to your steam account before hand as unlike normal steam payments you dont directly take it from a credit or debit card on the fly.

Trading Cards

Trading Cards are Randomized when obtained as drops or opening booster packs.
As you know you can get these cards from just by having the game open, but the time for one to drop is never set in stone and the Developers of Creativerse have 0 control over it.
You may or may not know you can also get them from the Steam Community market by buying them(again with Steam Wallet cash and not direct Credit/debit card) or you can trade with other Steam Users, or you could get them from Booster packs.

Booster Packs when opened give you a randomized collection of 3 cards per pack
Booster Packs unlike cards dont drop except the moment when somebody(anybody) on the entire range of Steam itself, crafts a game badge, and that only a Booster Pack that matches the game of that badge. There is another catch, those are randomly sent out to a randomly selected user that is eligable to get one. To be counted among those allowed to you must have payed for something on steam worth at least $5usd within the last year (one once a year at minimum following that) and be in good standing in Steams eyes (aka be on good behavior and dont do bad things) and lastly have obtained all random card drops you can have up to that moment in time for the game.

There is another note to how this is sent out. The higher your steam user profile lvl (those numbers that can vary from 0 all the way to 3000+ and are with different colors and shapes) the higher your chances are of being selected for that randomized Booster Pack.
this is on a scale of for every 10 levels your profile is… your gain another 10% chance (with no upper cap known you can have)
you may be wonder how it could be this simple to boost the odds in your favor but sime time it dont make sense how it can realy be that much with how many steam users there are …. Unfourtonatly I dont know why but I can only guess its not just a simple +10% for a single user over everyone else but something along the lines of just throwing more tickets with your name on it in a raffle type deal…

You boost your steam lvl from badges you craft/earn gaining xp (varies from type of badge and how or why sometimes)

Badges

Badges from games come in two types: Normal and Foil but both are created the same way.

You craft these badges using a FULL set of cards (1 each for every card the collection has with most games having at minimum of 5 cards to collect)
The difference between Normal and Foil is the type of cards. Just like the badges there is normal and foil cards, with foil being more rare to drop or find (and on the steam market normally selling for more)

there is one more difference between them: Normal badges can be crafted/upgraded(same way you make the badge the first time a full set is used) up to rank 5 with Foil badges being rank 1.
The rank of the badge dictates the xp it gives you normally 1 rank = 100xp

Things you get from Crafting Badges (Plus info about GEMS)

Every time you craft a game badge you get not just xp but 2 random items that can vary between emoticons for using in friends chat to profile backgrounds normally themed for the game you crafted the badge for.

You can keep, sell or trade these away but remember you might have to buy them off the Steam market if you sold them and change your mind later on and prices can change at times.

One other bonus you can get from crafting badges depends when you craft them. If you craft them during the big steam sales that have cards as well, you can get a free card to those sets as a bonus.

GEMS
Gems you gain from well converting unwanted cards emoticons backgrounds a select other items in your accounts profile inventory with some unable to be converted.
Gems can be used as a means to create your own booster packs for games you own that have cards(even games no longer being sold on steam if it is tied to your account)
the conversion of gem amount to a single booster pack varies based on the total amount of cards a game has for its set with normally higher amount of gems for sets with smaller amount of cards to collect and cheaper for the more cards a set has.
One other thing you can do with Gems is pack a set amount (1000?) into a sack to be able to sell on the community market.
Gems can at times for the wider steam community, can be used as a trade currency when doing trades with other users and can have its own kind of economy flux for value that can change over time.

Other

I wish to point out that Steam displays the cards for games being “series one” but as of yet Personally I have never know any game gaining a series 2 or higher for a set of cards to collect so it is something only Valve/Steam can really say if or when it could happen.

Second: even after you gain the max badge lvl for a game for both foil and normal you can still get drops in game like Creativerse that are counted as F2P games. In other words you could get more Wallet cash from selling those extras or trade them to friends or turn them into gems and ect.

1. Trade Your Cards

Most games on Steam have trading cards you can receive for playing them. You get one to three cards the first time you play a game after playing for two hours.

Most cards you get end up only being worth a few cents. However, you might get lucky and receive a foiled card that’s worth a couple of dollars. If you want to earn more cards, try using a site like Steam Idle Master.

Additionally, about every week you have a random chance of receiving a trading card Booster pack of three cards. You can either sell the pack as is, which is usually only worth about thirty cents or open the pack for the chance of getting foiled cards.

This isn’t the only game that this happens too. A general rule is that if you think a game is going to be really popular, chances are their pre-order crates will also be just as popular.

4. Don’t Buy & Open Crates

You might consider trying to buy as many crates as possible and then opening for the small chance of getting a nice item. Ultimately, this is not worth the risk.

Most rare items have as low as 0.01% chance of appearing in a crate. So, you might have to spend thousands of dollars on thousands of crates just to get the item. It’s better to save up your money and just buy the rare item outright on the market place rather than spending all that money on what is basically gambling.

5. Sell a Video Game

There’s only one way to make real money on Steam which can be redeemed. Making a video game is a long process that requires a lot of skill in coding, writing, and art, but it can be worth the effort.

To put a game on the Steam store, you need to invest $100 for the Steam Direct Product Submission Fee. After that, you can start selling games you’ve made on Steam. Steam takes a 30% cut of all sales that you make. If you sell $1,000 worth of games, you’ll be refunded the $100 you paid originally.

It’s important to remember, however, that your game will need to be a decent quality to get good reviews and actually make sales. It also takes a lot longer to develop a game than to sell some trading cards.

Sitting in your Steam library and inventory is potentially hundreds of dollars. Everyone who’s used Steam will have spied a Steam Trading Card or two in their time, but they can actually be used to make some quick cash if you want to buy a game.

Many Steam users will already be familiar with this process, but it’s basically a method of farming and selling your Steam trading cards. Individually each card isn’t worth much, but once you’ve amassed them on a large scale you can easily get enough cash in your Steam wallet for one or two full-priced games, or potentially even more.

Idle Master

If you’re anything like me then you’ll have plenty of games in your Steam library that you’ve barely touched, or perhaps never even started. The majority of games in Steam come with trading cards, with four awarded to each user for each game. To get hold of your Steam trading cards, you’ll need to play each game for up to two hours to unlock them.

That’s the time consuming method, but you can also use a pretty nifty tool called Idle Master. This tool cycles alphabetically through your entire Steam library, amassing Steam trading cards. It takes up to two hours for each game, but you can just leave it minimised and running in the background indefinitely.

Perhaps the best bit is you don’t even need to download the games to idle them, so this will save you plenty of time.

It’s made by the same chap you made Enhanced Steam, so you’re in safe hands. It’s a pretty basic program but there’s a few options, including the idling order and hiding your username. It also immediately lets you know how many card drops remaining in your entire library, and how many games are left to idle. In my case I’ve got 671 card drops remaining at the time of writing, which at an average of 8p a card will get me close to £60.

Your best bet for Idle Master is just to get it up and running before bed or work, come back and you’ll have a stack of cards to trade/sell/keep.

Steam Inventory Helper

Once you’ve got a hold of all those Steam trading cards, it’s time to sell them and make some cash. Again, there’s a slow way to do this and a quick way. The slow way to sell your Steam cards is to do it manually. To do this, head to your Steam inventory and click on the card you want to sell. Click sell and you’ll be able to set a price, or just sell it at the standard market value. This is fine for individual cards, but it can take a while if you have hundreds.

The speedy method is to use a Chrome plug-in called Steam Inventory Helper.

Among other things this offers quick selling, buying, price checking, and auto-accept options. For my sales, I didn’t want to fuss around maximising every penny, I just wanted to sell them as quickly as possible. With Steam Inventory Helper installed, you just need to head to your Steam inventory and click ‘Sell multi items’. You can then select as many cards as you want to sell. If you click on the first one and shift click on the last, it will select after card in between.

Once you’ve selected your cards, a new Sell All Items button will appear at the top. In here you can select auto accept and auto adjust price before clicking I agree, and it will sell all of your Steam trading cards you have selected for an automatic average price point.

Then it’s just time to sit back and watch the cash roll in.

This got me thinking. from my understanding you get Trading Cards either playing the game which gets you only so many, the rest you then need to create booster packs with Gems or buy them from the marketplace with your own funds. but what i don’t get is

1) the name for this practice implies using Steam Trading Cards to make money, however i can’t see how “developers” can make money as,

• you have to originally own the card you’re selling on the market place
• when it’s brought it goes to your wallet which you can’t transfer Steam wallet fund off Steam

and i wouldn’t think Valve would allow “developers” to create any number of trading cards for their games at will then sell them because this is obviously very easily abused

2) in the video SidAlpha mentions that reducing/blocking Key generation may have an impact to those who use Steam Trading Card Farming Generators, noting that a certain user base is actually worried it. but i’m not sure how key generation fits in to the scam.

Developers get a small percentage of trading card sales, that’s how they make money on trading cards. It doesn’t matter that the money earned by the seller of the card is locked up in a given account’s Steam Wallet, nor does it matter that you only get a fixed number of drops before needing to create booster packs, et cetera. Those mechanisms prevent a player from trivially generating an unlimited amount of money in their Steam wallet. They don’t provide guard rails for developers looking to abuse the system.

But this is, in fact, exactly what they did. Probably not intentionally, but they permitted it all the same:

Developers can generate an unlimited number of keys for their games. They can also create an unlimited number of throwaway Steam accounts, because Steam accounts are free to create. Accounts earn trading cards simply by running a given game for a specific period of time. In this fashion, an unscrupulous developer can generate an unlimited number of trading cards for all of their games by making throwaway accounts, generating keys for those accounts, and simply launching and idling in their games. Simple bots can accomplish this without much effort.

Since the developer earns a small amount of money on every trading card sold, they can then sell off stock of their unlimited number of cards and take the profits.

The only serious hurdle to overcome here, before Valve made changes to attempt to address this, was that you needed to get your games on Steam in the first place. But once you’d overcome that the first time it was much easier to generate a bunch of “asset flip” games to create a multiplicative factor on the amount of money one could “farm” this way.
