How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

Why type out text messages at your smartphone when you’re at a laptop or desktop PC with a full-size keyboards? These tricks allow you to send text messages directly from your PC.

Even if you don’t have access to cellular service you can use some of these tools to send SMS messages directly to a phone number. You don’t even need a mobile phone on your end.

Messages for iPhones – Mac Only

If you have both an iPhone and a Mac, Apple makes this possible. You need both — there’s no way to do this with an iPhone and a Windows PC. The built-in SMS-message-sending feature on a Mac only works if you partner it with an iPhone, too — not if you have an Android phone.

This is part of the “Continuity” feature added in Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite. You’ll need to enable it on your iPhone by opening the Settings app, tapping Messages, and activating Text Message Forwarding to your Mac. It should then work automatically if you’re using the same Apple ID to log into both your iPhone and your Mac. Open the Messages app on your Mac and you’ll see a synced history of text messages from your iPhone, too. You can reply from your Mac or send entirely new messages from the Messages app. Those text messages will be synced to your iPhone, too.

This doesn’t cost anything extra — it just uses your iPhone’s text-messaging service. If your cellular carrier charges you for texts, you’ll have to pay that fee for the messages you send.

MightyText for Android Phones

if you have an Android phone, the best way to do this is MightyText. MightyText is an app you install on your Android phone. You can then sign into the MightyText web app in a web browser on your computer — any computer, whether it’s running Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, or Chrome OS — and you can view and send your phone’s text messages from there. Browser extensions are also available. The AirDroid app for Android also does this and works well.

Like Messages on a Mac, this works entirely through your phone — your computer just becomes a gateway to your phone, which does the hard work of actually sending and receiving those text messages.

This won’t cost you anything extra. If your cellular carrier charges you for text messages, you’ll have to pay their fee.

Send SMS Text Messages On Mac

Your Mac does not have a SIM card and it cannot be classified as a phone or mobile device by any stretch of imagination. However, the Mac can still be setup to send and receive SMS and MMS Messages by linking it to an iPhone with a Cellular Plan.

This is made possible by the operating system on your Mac (MacOS) which is capable of linking Mac to your iPhone, whenever a common Apple ID is used on both devices. Due to this linkage, the two devices know when they are on the same network together, making it possible to send and receive SMS Text Messages on a non-cellular device like Mac.

Although, your Mac appears to be sending and receiving SMS Text Messages, it is actually your iPhone which is sending and receiving SMS Text Messages using its Cellular Plan.

However, for all practical purposes, sending and receiving text messages on Mac will feel the same (if not better) as doing it on an iPhone.

Steps to Send and Receive SMS Text Messages On Mac

In order to setup your Mac to send and receive SMS and MMS messages, you will need an iPhone with a Cellular plan. Also, you need to make sure that you are signed into your iCloud Account, both on iPhone and Mac using the same Apple ID.

1. On your Mac, click on the Apple logo and then click on System Preferences option in the drop-down menu.

2. Next, click on the iCloud option in the System Preferences Window.

3. On the Next Screen, login to your iCloud Account by entering your Apple ID and Password (in case you are not already logged in).

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

4. You may see a popup on your iPhone informing you about your Apple ID and Phone number being used on a new Mac.

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

After making sure that you are logged into your iCloud Account on Mac, go to your iPhone and confirm that you are logged into your iCloud Account with the same Apple ID.

1. From the Home Screen of your iPhone, tap on Settings.

2. On the Settings screen, scroll down and tap on iCloud.

3. On the next screen, make sure that you are logged into iCloud with the same Apple ID as used on your Mac.

After confirming that you are signed into iCloud on both devices using the same Apple ID, follow the steps below to set up text message forwarding on your iPhone:

1. Open the Messages App on your Mac by clicking on the Messages icon in the Taskbar.

Leave the Messages App open on your Mac (required to receive a security code) and get back to your iPhone to complete the following steps.

2. Open the Settings app on your iPhone

3. On the Settings screen, scroll down and tap on Messages .

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

4. On the Messages screen, tap on Text Message Forwarding (See image below)

5. On the next screen, you will see a list of Apple devices linked to your Apple ID under “Allow these devices to send and Receive Text Messages from this iPhone”. Turn on the option to Send and Receive Text Messages for your Mac (See image below).

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

6. Next, you will see a popup on your iPhone, prompting you to enter a verification code as shown on your Mac, in order to allow iPhone text messages to be sent and received on your Mac.

7. Enter the Verification Code (As it appears on your Mac – See image below) and tap on Allow . (See image above)

Now, whenever anyone sends a text message to you (your iPhone), you will be able to access the Message on your Mac and also reply to the text Message from your Mac.

All are 100% free and install in minutes

Texting from a computer can be convenient in certain situations, and it’s really easy to do from both an iPhone and an Android. However, there are some specific steps you have to take, and your setup might not be compatible with computer-based texting.

Sending texts through a computer can be helpful if your phone is causing too many distractions for you but you still want to be reachable by text. Or maybe you can type a lot faster from your computer with a full-sized keyboard versus the small on-screen keyboard on your phone.

Another reason for texting from a PC or Mac is if you’re just too lazy to pick up your phone from across the room!

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

Regardless of your situation, we’ve got you covered. Below are several ways to send and receive texts through your computer on Android and iPhone. All methods are 100% free and most can be performed in just a few minutes.

iMessage

The iMessage iOS texting service for iPhone can be used from a Mac by logging in to Messages on your Mac with the same Apple ID you’re logged in with on your iPhone. You can even take it a step further and use iMessage on Android or a Windows computer by setting up special software.

Let’s first look at how to text from a Mac:

Step 1: On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages and enable iMessage by tapping the button next to it.

Step 2: Scroll down the page to Send & Receive and ensure that the correct phone number or email address is selected. This is the method for which you will send and receive texts on your Mac.

Step 3: Open Messages on your Mac and log in with the Apple ID and password you’re logged in with on your iPhone.

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

Now you can view iMessage texts and send and receive texts without using your iPhone. Messages will remain synced between your Mac and iPhone as long as you remain logged in to both with the same Apple ID.

With iMessage set up on your Mac, you can even send and receive iPhone texts on Android via the AirMessage server software:

Step 1: Visit AirMessage and select AirMessage server for macOS on the bottom of the page.

Step 2: Install the program to your Mac and then open it and choose Edit Password to set your own password for the iMessage server.

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

Select OK to save and close that window.

Step 3: Install the AirMessage companion app on your Android.

Step 4: Enter the IP address to your Mac and the password you chose in Step 2.

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

Step 5: View your iPhone messages on your Android and send texts like you would from an iPhone!

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

Tip: See the AirMessage install guide if you’re having troubles getting this to work.

Using iMessage on a Windows computer isn’t as straightforward as the method for Macs. You can’t access iMessage from a browser in Windows nor can you install official Apple software on Windows to access your iOS texts.

Instead, the best way to go about sending iPhone texts through a Windows computer, without paying for the software, is to install a free remote access program.

Put AnyDesk or Chrome Remote Desktop (or something similar that supports both platforms) on your Mac and on your Windows PC, and then connect to your Mac to control the mouse and keyboard. This, of course, requires you to have a Mac set up with iMessage like described above.

Messages for Web

Messages is Google’s text messaging app for Android. Within it is a setting called “Messages for web” that you can enable to send texts through your phone via your computer. It works if both the phone and computer are on the same network.

Because Messages for web runs in a web browser, it works on any computer, whether it be Windows, Mac, or Linux.

Note: Although Wi-Fi is used between your phone and computer to send texts this way, they’re still being sent from your phone’s messaging plan. In other words, if you have a limited texting plan for your Android phone, this will count towards your usage.

Step 1: Tap the vertical, three-dotted menu at the top right corner of the app.

Step 2: Choose Messages for web.

Step 3: Tap QR code scanner.

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

Step 4: Visit on your computer and scan the QR code you see. This works in browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, but not Internet Explorer.

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

Optionally, you can choose Remember this computer before scanning the code so that you don’t have to do this again the next time you want to send texts from your computer.

Other Texting Apps for Computers

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

iMessage and Messages are the default texting apps in iOS and Android, but there are plenty of other messaging apps that can be used from both a mobile device and a computer. If set up correctly, you have lots of options for texting from a computer.

For example, if you like to use Facebook Messenger for texting on your Android or iPhone, you can access all the same messages and texting features from Facebook’s official website for Messenger.

All you need to log in with your Facebook account information. Texting like this works no matter where your phone is (i.e., it doesn’t need to be on the same Wi-Fi network).

WhatsApp is also a wildly popular texting app that can be accessed from a computer via It works like Android’s Messages app where you need to scan a QR code to log in to your account and ultimately send WhatsApp texts from the computer.

Just open the menu in WhatsApp and go to WhatsApp Web to open the camera you need to scan the code. Your phone must remain on the same network for this to work.

A few other examples where the texting feature of the messaging app can be used seamlessly between a phone and computer include Telegram Messenger, Slack, Skype, Textfree, and TextNow.

There are also ways to send free texts from a computer over email and web services. Those methods work differently than the ones we’ve described above because they’re not used to view your own messages on a computer but instead to send a free text to someone’s phone even if you don’t have a phone yourself.

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

To many of us, Our phones have become as important to us as food, water and air. We use phones as the hub for all forms of communication and provides us an immediate reference tool if we need instant information. We often even find ourselves plastered to our mobile devices, even when we’re at our computers, simply due to a never-ending flow of text messages. If only we could reply or send a text message from your computer without having to pick up our phones!

Or you could just hate typing on a tiny keyboard. Regardless of the reason, it’s easier than you might think to learn how to send a text message from a computer.

Sending Messages (Apple devices)

Apple has made it easy for you to send and receive text messages by computer. Unfortunately, this solution will not work with a windows machine or Android phones but is perfect if you us Apple products. All you need is a Mac running Mac OSX 10.10 (Yosemite or higher) and a paired Apple device, such as an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, and the right settings.

If you use the same Apple ID for your Apple device and your Mac computer, then this function should work automatically.

To enable text messages on your Mac computer, you’ll first need to activate the feature on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. To do this, go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Messages’ then tap ‘Text Message Forwarding’ and select the name of the Mac computer to which you want to forward messages. Once your ‘switch’ displays green, you’re good to go. Your messages will now be synced between your Apple device and your computer, as well as your contacts, meaning any messages sent between you and them should be viewable on your computer.

Use the new Windows Phone App (Android only)

This solution is for the Windows and Android users. The “Your Phone” app is new in Windows 10’s October 2018 Update. You can now text from your PC and easily access photos—assuming you have an Android phone. You will even be able to mirror your phone’s entire screen to your Windows 10 PC and see notifications from your phone on your PC. Sorry, iPhone users: Most of these features are only available if you have an Android phone. Apple doesn’t let third-party developers like Microsoft integrate as deeply with your phone’s operating system.

MightyText (Android)

MightyText is the answer for Android users who want to send and receive texts on their computer. And the best news is, it doesn’t matter which type of computer you use, as MightyText is a web-based app, so it works with Windows, Mac, Linux or Chrome OS. MightyText lets you synchronise your SMS messages along with your notifications, photos, videos, and all the major desktop browsers. It’s free for up to 500 messages a month, and after that it will set you back $5.00 month.

First, though, you’ll have to install MightyText on your Android phone. Once you’ve done that, simply sign in to MightyText’s web app via your preferred web browser and you’re good to go.

Use an Online SMS service

If you can not get any of the above solutions to work for you then another option will be to use an online SMS service. Many of these services are Paid services so this will be only an option if you need an immediate temporary solution. Try one of the options below –

Apple’s myriad devices work together seamlessly — except when they don’t. I recently ran across an irritating problem in that my Mac quit allowing me to send messages in the Messages app. It took me a while to find the solution, and, naturally, I’m happy to share it with our readers.

How to Send Messages From Your Mac

You can enable SMS and MMS correspondence on your Mac with Messages. You can read all about how to do this here.

Follow the steps in that article, and you’ll generally have no issues. However, when I upgraded to an M1 Mac (the 13-inch MacBook Pro), my Messages app became ornery and wouldn’t allow me to send messages, though I could receive them with no problem.

The first thing to do is what you should always (well, almost always) do if you’re having issues. After quitting Messages, Restart your Mac.

Sign Out of Messages, Then Sign in Again

If rebooting your Mac doesn’t work, sign out of Messages, then sign again. There could be a problem between the app and your Apple ID, and this could resolve it.

  • Go to Messages > Preferences > iMessage.
  • Across from your Apple ID account, click “Sign Out.”

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

  • Confirm you want to sign out.
  • Wait about 30 seconds, then enter your Apple ID details, and sign in to iMessage again.

Check Your Apple ID

While you’re at it, make sure that your Apple ID details are the same on your Mac and your iPhone.

  • On your iPhone, go to “Settings > [Your Name].”

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

Does the Apple ID account at the top of the page match what you signed into on your Mac? Great!

  • Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
  • Tap iCloud then turn on the option for Messages.
  • Go to “Settings > Messages.”
  • Turn on iMessage at the top of the page.
  • Check to make sure the contact details in Send & Receive are correct.
  • Go into Text Message Forwarding and turn on the option for your Mac.
  • Turn on the option to Send as SMS.
  • Try sending an iMessage or text message from your Mac again.

These steps did it for me. If you’re still having problems, there are two final things to try.

Lock and Unlock the Keychain Access App

Apple’s Keychain stores passwords and other vital info on your apps and certain processes. It’s very convenient, but some of its files can get corrupted, including those of Messages. It could help to lock and unlock Keychain on your Mac. Here’s how:

  • Press Command + Space to open Spotlight and search for the Keychain Access app. Hit enter to open the Keychain Access app.
  • From the menu bar, go to ‘File > Lock Keychain “login.”’

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

  • Wait a couple of minutes, then go to ‘File > Unlock Keychain “login.”’
  • Enter the administrator password on your Mac and click OK.
  • Try sending an iMessage or text message from your Mac again.

Note: If the option to lock your “login” Keychain is grayed out, check its settings in ‘Edit > Change Settings for Keychain “login”…’

Reset Your Preferences for Messages

And here’s one more thing to try before contacting Apple’s tech support: delete some plist files. A plist file is a settings file, also known as a “properties file,” used by macOS applications. It contains properties and configuration settings for various apps. Sometimes they can get glitchy and have to be deleted, so a proper list can automatically replace them.

Quit Messages, then:

  • From the Finder, hit Command+Shift+G to bring up Go To Folder and enter

/Library/Preferences/ .

  • If you don’t see iChat or Messages plists, change the display to sort by list, then click the “Date Modified” option to sort the plist files by when they change.
  • Open Messages and select “Messages > Preferences” from the menu bar.
  • Check and uncheck an option or two while watching the

/Library/Preferences/ folder. It should change on the fly and iChat/Messages plists should show up at or near the top of the list.

  • Drag and drop any Messages and/or iChat plists to your Desktop.
    • Now try sending an iMessage or text message from Messages on your Mac.
    • If that works, drag the plist files from your Desktop to the Trash.
    • If that doesn’t work, return the plist files to the Preferences folder.

If none of these steps work, it’s probably time to get in touch with Apple support.

Is SMS supported for temporary phone numbers during a port-in process?

When a temporary number is assigned to a user license (X2 and above) as part of a phone number port-in process, the SMS feature is not provisioned for that user until the port-in process has completed. Please see the following article for more information:

Is SMS supported on Canadian or UK 8×8 phone numbers?

SMS is supported on 8×8 phone numbers in Canada, but not the UK.

Can I exchange SMS messages with international contacts?

You can receive SMS messages from any global phone number (whether 8×8 or non-8×8). However, you can only send messages to numbers in the United States and Canada.

Can I send/receive SMS pictures or group texts (MMS)?

The latest versions of the 8×8 Work applications for Desktop, Mobile (Android | iOS), and Web support the exchange of files such as images via SMS with both 8×8 and non-8×8 numbers (per the international restrictions above).

Currently, group messaging via SMS (i.e., group texts) is not supported. SMS messages may only be sent to and from individual numbers.

Can I message co-workers (on the same 8×8 PBX)?

Clicking on the message bubble to send messages to a co-worker in your 8×8 Company Directory will only send instant messages (IM), not SMS messages.

What is the difference between IM and SMS in 8×8 Work?

8×8 IM (instant messaging) service is used to communicate between 8×8 extensions in a commonly shared 8×8 PBX. 8×8 SMS (short messaging service) is a standards-based platform to send messages (up to 160 characters) to mobile devices that are not associated with an 8×8 PBX.

    How can I disable SMS?

In 8×8 Admin Console, SMS can be turned off (and back on) through Profile Policies by your 8×8 account administrator(s).

In Account Manager, SMS can be turned off (and back on) at a company-wide level by your 8×8 account administrator(s).

Which cell phone carriers support 8×8 SMS?

Virtually all cell phone carriers will work with 8×8 SMS.

Where can I see SMS messages sent to my 8×8 number?

    In any 8×8 Work application.

If I’m logged into Work for Desktop on my PC/Mac and Work for Mobile on my mobile device simultaneously, will I receive messages on both?

Yes, you will receive incoming IM and SMS messages on both your computer and mobile device if you are logged into 8×8 Work on both when the message is received.

You can see messages sent from one device on any other device running an 8×8 Work application you are logged into, as well as continue an IM/SMS conversation. To view IMs or SMS messages, click the Messages icon in the navigation bar of Work for Mobile or Work for Desktop.

What happens to messages I receive when I’m offline or away?

If you’re not logged in to 8×8 Work on your mobile device or computer and someone sends you a message, the first device you log into will receive notification of the missed message. The other device will not receive notification of the missed message. If you’re logged in to Work for Desktop on only your PC/Mac and receive a message when you’re away from your desk, after logging into your mobile device, you will not receive the “missed” message. • You can also set up notification push from the settings and mirror message notifications from your Android phone.
  • For this, you will have to install Pushbullet on your PC as well, which you can do from here.
  • After installation is complete, you can now send and receive text messages, WhatsApp messages, and messages from other apps.
  • These were two ways to send and receive messages on Windows for free. However, few features in Pushbullet are premium and require a subscription. You can use either Pushbullet or Your Phone app to make this possible and enhance your work focus.

Method 3: Using Web version of apps like WhatsApp, Telegram

You can also send messages using WhatsApp web and web versions of apps like Telegram, Android Messages, and their desktop apps. Signal also offers Windows, macOS, and Linux software; hence you can download Signal on your notebook as well. Pairing your phone with web or their desktop versions, you can send and receive messages from your laptop or PC.

There is another method that is exclusive to iOS and macOS only and works like a charm. Using iMessage, you can send and receive messages from your Mac and iOS seamlessly. Here is how:

Method 4: Send and receive texts on macOS/iOS

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

    1. Select Messages by clicking the blue speech bubble icon in the Dock at the bottom of the screen, or type Messages in the search bar by pressing CMD + Space bar while typing a message.
    2. The Apple ID associated with your iPhone is required to sign in.
    3. You can add new messages by clicking the square icon next to the Search field.
    4. Enter the phone number or email address of the contact you wish to contact in the To box (the email address you enter should be the one they used to send an iMessage) and press enter.
    5. You may also add people from your Contacts file by using + sign if your Mac is synced with your Contacts file.
    6. A blue box will appear around the friend’s number if they have an iPhone. They will receive your text as an iMessage, which would be sent via Apple’s servers.

What if your friend does not have an iPhone?

When you add your friend’s phone number to the To: field, it may get a red box if they have a different type of phone.

This means their phone isn’t set up to receive iMessages. If you try to send a text message, you’ll get an error message that says, “Your message could not be received.”

However, this does not preclude you from texting them. All you have to do now is set up your Mac to send messages to your iPhone.

    1. Make sure your Mac and iPhone are both signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID.
    2. Go to System Preferences > iCloud on your Mac and sign in with your Apple credentials.
    3. Check that the Apple ID account you’re using on your iPhone is the same. To access iCloud, go to Settings > iCloud.
    4. On your Mac, open Messages.
    5. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages and tap Text Messages Forwarding.
    6. Your Mac (or Macs) will be identified here with an on/off slider next to them. Set the slider to green to enable your Mac to send and receive text messages.
    7. You’ll see a message instructing you to enter the code shown on your Mac in order to send and receive iPhone text messages on your Mac.
    8. Wait for the system to be checked after entering the number.

When you add a non-iPhone phone number, a green box will appear to signify that you are sending a text message.

Your friend will receive a regular text message, which will be counted against your text message limit under your cell phone contract since it was routed through your iPhone.

MightyText, which was released in 2012 is another app created by previous Google workers that enables you to synchronize your messages and text notifications with practically all PC browsers (Chrome, Firefox, and Safari are native supporters) and tablets.

When you’ve downloaded the MightyText app on your Android cell phone (works with Android versions 2.2 and up) just as on your PC, every one of your messages (SMS or data-based if the recipient also had the MighthyText app) will be automatically and immediately synced on both your cell phone and PC.

How does the MightyText app work?

MightyText lets you send messages from your PC or Mac as though it were sent from your Android phone. Messages sent will be gotten as SMS-es and MMS-es, however, while they sync from Apple to Android, it doesn’t work the other way around. This makes it extremely valuable for those without a data plan, or who have exceeded their data limit.

    • See your phone’s notifications on your computer.
    • Search across your messages, contacts, and conversations
    • See incoming call and missed call alerts.
    • Change the user interface with 16 different themes.
    • Use message formats when sending a similar message again and again.
    • You can see your phone’s battery level on your PC and tablet. It also warns you when the battery is low.
    • You can send Send documents, files, pictures, web pages, and maps from your computer to your mobile phone.
    • Ring your phone from your PC and tablet, even when your phone is on silent or the ringer is off.
    • Use the web app on multiple browsers and devices at the same time and many more.
    • Save message drafts.

Who can use this MightyText app?

Including normal phone users, this app is ideal for realtors, salesmen, consultants, taxi dispatchers, occasion organizers, and different organizations that depend on messaging to send speedy, proficient bulk SMS messages to partners and customers. Mark Texts: MightyText lets you mark most favorite messages and browse through contacts.

Settings: You can effectively change the settings (which include either pressing enter should to or should not send your messages and whether you need to get pop-ups to inform you of new messages and calls).

Free: One of the greatest things about the MightyText app is that it is free of cost and doesn’t charge for any further subscription.

PC into a Mobile Phone: It changes your PC or tablet into a cell phone. You can call, message, and even check the battery life of your mobile phone at the side of your 13-inch screen, regardless of whether you choose to leave your telephone at home.

Since the app was initially released back in March 2012 under the “Texty” title, it was downloaded on more than 250k devices and it’s utilized for sending about 2 million messages every day. The publicity around this app is clearly developing at a high pace, something totally reasonable, seeing that MightyText is fundamentally the main iMessage clone accessible for Android.

Two ways for you to get iPhone messages (iMessage or Text Messages) on Windows 10.

Can You Get iPhone Messages on Windows 10

There are generally three types of messages on your iPhone, iMessage, text messages (SMS), and multimedia messages (MMS). For your information:

    • Text messages and multimedia messages are texts and photos that you can send to any other cell phone.

Besides, iMessages are sent over Wi-Fi or cellular data network while SMS or MMS requires a text-messaging plan, which is provided by your wireless carrier.

If you want to get your iPhone messages on Windows 10, it could be easy or difficult, depending on the type of message you want to transfer.

For example, if you want to sync iMessages to PC, it will be complex since iMessages are only supported on Apple devices like iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Mac. How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

Whether you’re looking to send text messages to update your customers on their order or you want to confirm the time of your dinner date, it’s helpful to be able to text from your computer rather than your phone.

From a business standpoint, it simply isn’t possible to text all of your customers because you can’t send text messages at scale using your personal phone. As an individual, it’s convenient to text from your computer, especially if you’re like me and frequently misplace your cell phone.

Your use case will determine the method that you use to text from your computer, so think about your goals when looking for a solution. Do you want to send 1:1 texts to your friends from your computer? Are you a business looking for a one-to-many short message service (SMS) solution?

We’ll cover a number of ways individuals and businesses can text from their computers. Here’s a quick preview of the different methods and setup requirements.

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

    1) How to send texts via email

Sending a text message via email is simple. All you need to know is your recipient’s phone number and their carrier. If you’re not sure about the carrier, you can use Twilio’s Carrier Lookup tool to find out.

Once you know those two pieces of information, type in your recipient’s phone number and the corresponding carrier email address into the “To” section of your email. Below we’ve listed the most common carrier SMS and MMS addresses.

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

If you want to send an image or a gif, go for the MMS option. (SMS is a text-only option). For more information on the differences between SMS and MMS, check out our guide SMS vs. MMS.

A sample address looks like this: [email protected] You can add whatever text you want, and your SMS will look something like this:

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

    2) Send messages from your Mac with iMessage

If you have an iPhone and an Apple computer, you can easily send text messages from your computer to other iPhones or Androids. You’ll need to enable message forwarding so that your computer receives the messages alongside your phone.

Once you enable message forwarding, sending a message is as simple as opening the Message app on your computer, entering your Apple ID and password, and composing a message to one of your contacts.

    3) Text an Android phone from your computer

If you have an Android phone, you can download the app, Messages by Google. This process is similar to setting up your computer for WhatsApp (more on that below). All you need to do is scan the QR code using your phone to sync the devices.

And make sure your phone is nearby and turned on. Otherwise, you won’t be able to text from your computer.

    4) Send a message via WhatsApp on your computer

WhatsApp is a messaging app that allows you to send wifi-enabled messages and make voice and video calls. With more than 2.5 billion users worldwide, WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in over 100 countries. The app is an incredibly useful messaging solution for individuals to connect with friends and family and businesses to connect with customers.

To send individual WhatsApp messages from your computer, download the WhatsApp desktop app. Then sync your devices by scanning the QR code that pops up on your computer screen. Once your phone and computer sync, you can send WhatsApp messages from your computer.

    5) Set up bulk SMS using APIs

While the options above are excellent for sending one-to-one messages, most of these methods do not work well for businesses that want to send bulk messages to their customers.

Just like your Gmail account isn’t set up to send emails to thousands of your customers, your phone carrier isn’t prepared to send thousands of messages from your one device.

That’s where Twilio comes in. Twilio provides multiple messaging solutions depending on your needs.

    • Twilio’s Programmable Messaging API allows you to send and receive SMS, MMS, and WhatsApp messages. Send order confirmations, shipping notifications, time-sensitive communications, and marketing promotions to your customers.
    • With Twilio’s Conversations API, you can manage multiparty communications through SMS, MMS, WhatsApp, and Chat. This is an excellent product to provide customer support, appointment rescheduling, and cross-channel communication.
    • If the majority of your customers are outside of the U.S., try using Twilio’s WhatsApp Business API. Using Twilio’s WhatsApp API, you can provide customer support, deliver appointment reminders, order confirmations, or send urgent alerts.

If you’re curious to see how these applications are used in the wild, check out how Airbnb streamlined its vacation rental experience using Programmable Messaging.

    6) Send texts with low-code/no-code SMS apps

If setting up SMS using APIs is a bit outside your wheelhouse, try sending text messages using low code or no-code applications. Twilio offers a variety of Quick Deploy apps that make it easy to send text messages from your computer in under 5 minutes or less.

Here are a few examples of what’s possible with Quick Deploy:

If you still don’t believe how easy it is to set up, check out this article, Expanding Into SMS (for Those Who Don’t Code, Like Me).

Misplace or break your phone? No cell signal? Have no fear. You can still text away with a computer via WiFi.

Texting from a laptop has its perks: it’s (usually) free, typing is easier and faster, and best of all, you can look busy when you’re not.

Here are five different ways you can text from your laptop.

    1. Text through email

If you know your friend’s phone number and cellphone provider, you can easily deliver a text through email.

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

Combine your recipient’s 10 digit phone number with one of these popular domains:

Verizon: @vtext.com (or @vzwpix.com for photos and video)

For example, if the phone number is (123) 456-7890 and the owner’s wireless carrier is AT&T, you would send an email to [email protected]

Just put your text message into the body of the email, press send, and voila!

When he or she replies to your text, the message will go straight to your email’s inbox. Keep in mind a longer email will be broken up into multiple text messages, and standard text message rates apply to recipients because the messages are sent as regular texts.

    2. Text through your wireless carrier’s website

Depending on what your wireless service provider is, you may be able to text other subscribers from your own carrier’s website.

If you have Verizon, you can sign into your My Verizon Account, where you can send and receive texts, photos, and videos. Verizon users can also download the desktop application for their computers through My Verizon.

You can do the same through a My AT&T account.

Take a look at what texting features your carrier offers for your desktop.

    3. Text through Apple’s iMessage

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

The Messages app can be used to send iMessages from a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. Simply open up the Messages app, type in your recipient’s phone number (or Apple ID), and you’ll be able to write your message and send it off.

As long as Messages on your Mac is set up to receive texts from both your Apple ID and phone number, you should be able to text to both iPhones and other kinds of phones via the app.

    4. Text through a free SMS website

If you search the web, you’ll find a ton of free unlimited SMS websites that will allow you to text internationally. Some free texting messaging sites are Send SMS Now and A Free SMS.

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

But these websites have their downsides. In some cases, depending on the website, you won’t be able to receive responses directly on the website. You might have to provide an email address to receive responses. And some sites may even require you to sign up and register to see responses.

Then, there’s the sketch factor. You may be bombarded with advertisements while using these sites, which allow these services to run for free.

    5. Text through Google Voice

Unlike some of the ways listed above, you can send and receive text messages with Google Voice without knowing the recipient’s carrier. This software gives you the option to choose a brand new number, free of charge, or use your existing mobile number.

How to send sms messages from any pc or mac

However, Google Voice only allows you to send and receive text messages to phone numbers in the U.S. and Canada.

Besides texting, Google Voice has other features, such as calling, voicemail, call blocking, and transcribing your voicemail messages to text.

If you use an Android, there’s a good chance you use Google’s Messages app to send and receive text messages, photos, voice messages and video. You can also text anyone from your computer. The app also integrates Google services and features such as Assistant and Dark Mode into your chats.

    • Make sure you have the latest version of Messages installed on your Android phone.
    • Go to messages.android.com on your PC and you’ll get a QR code.
    • Open Messages on your phone and tap the three dots in the top-right corner, then Messages for web.
    • Tap QR code scanner and point your phone at your computer screen.
    • You should now see your conversations on the left side of your computer screen.

If you’re in a pinch, email is a great way to send texts. This tip also works if you want to message your phone. Why? Perhaps you misplaced it somewhere in your home. To text someone by email, you’ll need their phone number and carrier. Let’s use T-Mobile as an example here.

    • Open your email program and type out your message.
    • Type the contact’s 10-digit phone number in the recipient box.
    • Follow the number with the @ symbol and the proper SMS gateway for the carrier. T-Mobile is @tmomail.net. For the sake of this example, the address you send your message to would be [email protected]
    • Next, send the message as you normally do.

There’s several ways to send free SMS text messages, here’s the best ways I know of to send free texts from the computer, using either the AIM protocol (with iChat or Adium), Google’s GTalk within Gmail, and finally a free website known as GizmoSMS.

When using any of these methods, keep in mind the SMS messages may be free for you to send, but they are not necessarily free text messages for the other person to receive!

Send Free SMS Text Messages with AIM

We covered this in the past showing how to get free sms text messages on the iPhone but it’s certainly not just limited to the iPhone. Basically just send an instant message to a new screen name, but enter a phone number instead in the format +18885551212, send your instant message as usual but AIM will deliver the message through SMS and then you can talk as if it’s a normal instant message! This is my preferred method of sending SMS through the computer. (Works on Meebo too!)

Send SMS through Google Talk / Gmail

Enabled some time ago, you can now add phone numbers as a contact in GTalk / Gmail and send free SMS text messages this way, it works quite well to send SMS through a browser.

When the person responds to the text, it’s just like any other GTalk conversation within Gmail.

For Android users, these actually sync with their broader SMS / texts, which is a nice bonus.

    Free web-based SMS with GizmoSMS

Another option is called GizmoSMS, accessible through this website, which is pretty straightforward and worked like a charm for every number that I tried it with. Basically just enter the phone number, the message, and the captcha code and away the message is sent. The downside to this method is that there is no way to specify where the message came from, so this is best for a last resort really.

If GizmoSMS doesn’t work, try out TxtDrop which does basically the same thing.

Don’t forget that though sending the messages is free for YOU, it may cost the recipient something, so be mindful of messaging charges!

Sending SMS Text Messages with Skype (paid)

Skype works to send SMS as well, by the way, but it’s not free. Instead you will need Skype credits.

    iMessage (not SMS, but messages)

Of course iMessage is not SMS text messaging, but to talk to any other iPhone, Mac or iPad user it is free to use iMessager as communication method.

If you know of another way to send free SMS text message, share with us in the comments below!
