How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

Whether you’ll be away from home while travelling or just during the workday, you may want to keep an eye on it. Solutions like Nest’s Nest Cam (formerly Dropcam) try to make this easy, but there’s more than one way to do this.

We’re not focused on full security systems with alarms and other features here — just cameras so you can keep an eye on your place with live streaming and video recordings.

Plug-and-Play Streaming Cameras

Many manufacturers are trying to make this even easier, offering plug-and-play solutions linked to web services and smartphone apps. These don’t require you connect the camera to a computer or any other device — you just need the camera and an Internet connection.

Google’s Nest Cam works this way — Nest actually purchased Dropcam, which pioneered this. Plug it in, link it to an account, and then you can access it from the web or a smartphone as well as setting up automatic recording. Keeping those recordings will cost you at least $10 a month, though. Storing the recordings “in the cloud” on the service’s own server does have one advantage — if someone breaks in and steals your equipment, you’ll still have access to the footage.

Other manufacturers have made similar solutions, from the simplicam to the HomeMonitor to the Belkin Netcam HD.

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

IP Cameras

The above devices are convenient and easy to set up, but you may not want to store recordings on a service’s remote servers when you could keep them for yourself.

If you want to do this yourself, you’re looking for an “IP camera.” This just means it’s a digital video camera that can send data through the Internet protocol on a network.

You’ll still have to do some legwork yourself if you want to remotely access the stream over the Internet or just have the camera save a recording to another device in your home.

Some IP cameras require a network video recorder to record to, while others can record their videos directly to a NAS (network-attached storage) device or a PC you’ve set up to function as a server. Some IP cameras even have built-in Micro SD card slots so they can record directly to that physical media — they may even have built-in servers so you can access the recording remotely.

If you’re creating your own server, you’ll need to pick some IP camera software and set it up yourself. You can hook multiple cameras up to get a more complete view of your place, and IP cameras are often cheaper than plug-and-play solutions like the Nest Cam. However, there’s a good chance you’ll have to pay a license fee to use whatever software you choose.

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

Webcams

Rather than get a full IP camera, you could potentially just get a webcam and connect it via USB to a computer running the appropriate recording software. You may even have a spare webcam you can use for this. Webcams tend to be cheaper than IP cameras, although they may lack important features like night vision for recording what happens when it’s completely dark.

Unlike an IP camera, the webcam must be connected directly to the computer via USB, while the IP camera can be elsewhere in the house and connect over Wi-Fi.

You’ll need to pick some sort of “webcam surveillance software” — recording and video-capture software that’s designed to work with webcams and not just IP cameras. Much of this is software you’ll need to pay for, but you’re still saving money overall.

And, yes, if you do this, you’ll need to keep your computer running 24/7 — if you want to record all day, at least.

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

Turn an Old Phone Into a Security Camera

If you have an old Android phone lying around, you could potentially turn it into a network security camera. After all, it has a camera, Wi-Fi, and a built-in computer — everything it needs to capture, stream, and record video. We’ve previously covered how to turn on old Android phone into a network security camera. If you have a spare phone you’re not putting to use, it might be worth a shot.

Be sure to do your research when purchasing cameras and software. If you’re getting a plug-and-play camera, understand whether you’ll have to pay a monthly fee. If you’re getting an IP camera or webcam, check whether it offers the features you want — not all cameras offer night vision or HD recording, for example.

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

Sure, you can use the wonders of web-based video calling to speak to the parents back east, but its potential goes way beyond that. How about using it to keep watch on your home while you’re at the office or out of town altogether?

It’s not as difficult as you might think and as usual there are a number of alternative approaches to match your budget and current level of tech-savviness. As long as there’s Wi-Fi at your home, you can set up a camera to keep watch on what’s happening.

With iSmartAlarm

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

If you really want to go all out on your living room monitoring kit, and there’s a home security fund burning a hole in your wallet, then iSmartAlarm is just about as comprehensive as they come. An intelligent security camera is just one part of this extensive system, which covers everything from alerts when family members get home, to timers for your lights so you can pretend to be at home when you aren’t. This is a solution that doesn’t come cheap though, particularly if you want all of the components.

We’re here for the video surveillance, which comes in the form of the chunky iCamera Keep. It doesn’t look like the world’s most modern bit of kit but what it lacks in form it makes up for in function. You can pan and tilt the camera right from your phone and take snaps manually as well as relying on the automatic motion detectors to do the job for you. A separate CubeOne box (which acts as the brains for your whole iSmartAlarm system) can record video footage while you’re away for you to review at a later date.

There’s a bunch of compatible stuff you can add to the camera from iSmartAlarm: Contact sensors so you know when doors are being opened, smart switches for turning appliances on and off, motion sensors for detecting movement in a particular area, and so on, with everything controlled from your Android or iOS smartphone. Prices start at $199 and go upwards from there, but there’s no subscription to pay—all the costs are up front. If you’re looking for a comparable alternative then Honeywell has a broad range of home security kit as well.

With a Nest Cam or Canary

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

A step down from a full-on security system but still a dedicated solution with plenty of bells and whistles, the $199 Nest Cam is one of Google’s latest hardware projects — it’s the one to go for if you just want the video feed functionality without all of the other home security add-ons and features rolled into the package. It looks a bit like an old-school webcam but it connects directly to the web and can pipe video to you wherever you are, and it has some useful features like a night vision mode.

That’s just for starters: If you chip in a few more dollars a month you can add recordings that are stored in the cloud for 10 days ($10/month) or 30 days ($30/month). With the Nest Cam alone, you only get a live feed plus alerts when the camera detects something happening—Nest Aware (as the extra premium service is called) adds a summary of the day’s incidents, an archive of footage, the ability to set activity zones and a timelapse mode for burning through a lot of video very quickly. You can also set up subscriptions for multiple cameras.

You get a month of free Nest Aware when you buy a Nest Cam. It can be left free-standing or fixed to a wall or fridge (there’s a built-in magnet) and the camera lens records in 1080p HD quality with a 130-degree wide angle view. As you would expect, it works pretty seamlessly with Google’s other Nest products too. If you want a robust and professional system for watching your living room from anywhere (via web, iOS or Android), but don’t want to pay full whack, Nest Cam is worth a look.

And if the subscription turns you off, you can also check out Canary, it’s a little bulkier, but for the same $200 it performs all of the important features the Nest does, but comes with motion alerts and limited cloud storage for no extra fee.

With Skype and a webcam

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

Skype has a little-known feature that lets you connect remotely from another computer, with no input necessary from your home machine. The beauty of this one is you don’t need any extra equipment if you already have a PC (or laptop) at home with a webcam—Skype is free to download and use as well, so you can get started pretty much straight away without spending anything.

Open up Skype on Windows and get to the Options dialog via the Tools menu (it’s under Skype and Preferences on a Mac). If you click Calls, then Show advanced options, you should see a box labelled Answer incoming calls automatically—tick this box and choose to start your video feed automatically too. Any incoming Skype calls will automatically get put straight through to your video feed, giving you a glimpse of your living room, pets and everything else at home.

You’ve probably spotted a potential flaw here: Your Skype contacts video calling you when you’re away. To get around this you need to set up a new Skype account solely for the purpose of watching your home, then add your original Skype account as the one and only contact. In the same dialog as the auto-accept setting you can make sure you’re only receiving calls from confirmed contacts.

You can then tap into the video feed from wherever you can get Skype: Your smartphone, an Internet cafe, a browser on the other side of the world, or anywhere else.

In theory there’s nothing to stop you setting up single-purpose Skype accounts for every computer (and room) in your house, and with webcams costing very little you could feed one to the window to keep check on the garden too. On the downside, your various machines have to stay on all the time, waiting for your call.

Worried about what your dog is chewing on when you’re at work, or whether your home is secure while on vacation? New apps can transform old smartphones into remote security cameras for home monitoring systems.

Worried about what your dog is chewing on when you’re at work, or whether your home is secure while on vacation? New apps can transform old smartphones into remote security cameras for home monitoring systems.

Presence, which was launched late last month, converts a spare Internet-connected iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch into a free video camera with real-time video and audio streaming, and motion detection and notifications.

“Essentially we give you an inexpensive security system that you can use to monitor your house, or help you watch your kids, cats, elderly relatives or act as a baby or nanny cam,” said Gene Wang, chief executive of the Palo Alto, California-based company People Power.

Unlike traditional monitoring systems that can be expensive and need technical knowledge to install and use, Wang said Presence is a free do-it-yourself system that can be set up simply by downloading and configuring the app.

Representational Image. AFP

To use it consumers install and login to their account on two devices – for example two iPhones. Then they can start the camera within the app on one of the devices and it can be viewed from the app on the other.

Triggers can also be set to record when motion is detected and to send alerts. The app can help to avoid false alarms, according to Wang, because it sends a video clip in an email to the user showing the motion that triggered the alert.

“With these high-end security systems, you have a lot of false positives and then the security company and police come out and it turns out it was your cat knocking over a broom or something like that,” Wang explained.

He added that many people have replaced their old smartphones with new ones and a monitoring system would be a good way to make use of the old devices.

Another app created by a company called People Power 1.0 for iPhone and Android reads electricity meters in real time to show consumers how much they’re spending and whether they are going over budget.

“The center of computing has switched to these smart computers that we all carry in our pockets,” Wang explained.

“What people are going to want to be able to do is control their personal Internet of Things from their hands,” he added, referring to Internet-connected devices in the home.

The company also plans to work with underfunded public schools to help them set up security systems using old devices donated by the community.

Other apps have similar functions. AirBeam is a home monitoring app for iOS that allows users to access video feeds from a Web portal.

Izon is an app that streams real-time audio and video from iZon cameras to iPhone and Android devices, and Ivideon, for iOS and Android, also lets people build their own surveillance system.

Whether you’re monitoring package deliveries or peeking at your house while you’re out of town, here’s how to make the most out of your home security camera setup.

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

The proliferation of smart home tech has filled our homes with connected appliances and devices, including security cameras.

It’s easier than ever to set up your own home security system to monitor package deliveries, make sure the kids get home safely, and peek at your house while you’re out of town. But if you don’t want to install a complete smart home security system, there are plenty of relatively low-cost ways to keep an eye on your home when you’re away. Here’s how to get the most out of your devices so you can better protect your home.

1. Don’t Hide Your Cameras

Unless there’s a specific activity you want to catch a person doing—like someone breaking into your car—don’t bother hiding your outdoor security cameras. Most burglars consider the presence of security cameras when selecting a target and avoid homes where they might be caught in the act, according to research from the University of North Carolina.

2. Protect More Than Your Front Door

Picking the right spot for your home security cameras will depend a lot on the layout of your home. However, there are a few key areas that are more important to cover than others.

Your front door sees a lot of traffic, from visitors to deliveries. Covering your entryway with a camera or video doorbell helps monitor for intruders, but keep an eye on more mundane things, like whether your delivery driver is handling your packages properly.

You should also cover less obvious places on your home. Back doors are a common entry point for intruders, since they’re more likely to be left unlocked (lock your back doors!), but ground-floor windows on the sides or rear of your home also present an enticing option for intruders. Consider putting a second set of eyes in these vulnerable spots, too.

3. Set Up Motion Detection

You don’t have time to monitor your cameras 24-7 or watch hours of video, so make sure you get a camera with motion detection.

Some cameras allow you to set certain spaces in your camera’s field of view to monitor for motion. So, for example, you can get alerted when something comes to your door, but not when a cat runs through your yard.

Some smart camera systems also require a subscription for advanced features. Nest cameras, for example, can detect general motion, but with the Nest Aware subscription, the camera can tell the difference between a tree swaying in the wind and a person approaching your door.

Consider what kind of activity you want to monitor for and activate the appropriate feature on your smart camera after you connect it.

4. Do You Have the Power?

It should go without saying that your outdoor cameras will need a power source. Consider whether you want a battery-powered camera or one that connects to a nearby power outlet. Not having to snake a power cable into your home to plug into an outlet in a plus, but be aware that battery-powered Wi-Fi cameras tend to drain quickly in colder weather. Look for an outdoor Wi-Fi camera that can connect to either the 2.4GHz or 5GHz radio band to alleviate network congestion. If you’re having trouble getting a good signal outside, try a wireless range extender.

5. Secure Your Accounts

You’re installing a smart security system so you can keep an eye on your home, especially when you’re not there. However, if you don’t secure your account properly, you’re leaving the metaphorical door open for intruders to peer through your cameras as well.

To prevent this, make sure that you change any default passwords on your camera. Older or off-brand camera often use very simple security, and passwords for them are a Google search away, potentially opening yourself up to some scary situations.

For smart cameras like Nest, Amazon, or Wyze, be sure to give your accounts complex passwords and enable two-factor authentication if it’s available. If your camera is connected to Wi-Fi, make sure your router is secured using WPA2 encryption, as well. You can never be too careful.

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

Use Manything, Salient Eye or a similar free app to turn an old phone into a security camera.

Most people have at least one old smartphone collecting dust in a drawer somewhere. You can sell your old phone or do a trade-in for a fraction of its purchase price, but if it still turns on, there are a number of good uses for old phones around the house . You can turn that old Android phone into a baby monitor or a makeshift Google Home speaker , for example. One of the most useful ways to upcycle an old phone is to convert it into a home security camera .

You’ll save a ton of cash by upcycling an old phone instead of buying a new home security camera . And setting it up isn’t hard. In fact, you can start using that old, dusty iPhone or Android phone as a home security camera in just three steps.

Step 1: Install a security camera app on your old phone

To begin, you will need to choose a security camera app for your phone. Most apps offer many of the same features, such as local streaming, cloud streaming, recording and storing footage locally or remotely, and motion detection and alerts. Once you’re set up, you will be able to monitor your living space and control your security camera from anywhere, straight from your new phone.

One of the best app options for setting up your phone as a security camera is Alfred. It’s cross-platform, so it doesn’t matter if your old phone was an Android phone or iPhone . And the same goes for your new phone.

Alfred is free to use and gives you a remote view of your live feed, motion detection with alerts, free cloud storage, a two-way audio feed and use of both the front and rear cameras. To unlock additional features, like higher-resolution viewing and recording, zoom capabilities, ad removal and 30-day cloud storage, you can upgrade to Alfred Premium.

  1. Download Alfred (Android, iOS) on both your old and new phones, or any tablets you want to use.
  2. On the new phone, swipe through the introduction and tap Start. Select Viewer and tap Next.
  3. Once you get to the sign-in page, click Sign in with Google (a Google account is required) and sign in with your Google account credentials.
  4. On the old phone, repeat the same steps, but instead of selecting Viewer, select Camera. And make sure to sign in to the same Google account.

Once both phones are signed in to Alfred, you’re pretty much done with the setup. Alfred has simplified the camera options to only include a few settings. On iOS, you can only enable motion detection, choose between the front and rear cameras and enable or disable audio. If you’re using an Android device, you have those options and you can also enable continuous focus, have Alfred automatically reopen if the phone reboots, set a resolution and enable a passcode lock.

From your new phone, you can change a few more settings, such as turning notifications on or off, setting a camera or viewer name, adding other people to your Trust Circle (granting other people access to your video feeds), removing a camera, checking how many times a camera has disconnected, setting motion detection sensitivity and enabling a low-light filter on cameras.

While Alfred is a solid choice, keep in mind it’s not the only choice. Far from it, in fact. Manything , Salient Eye and Presence are all solid free choices with an affordable subscription model if you need more features. And IP Webcam is one of the more popular Android-only options.

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

How you’ll install a home security camera depends on which type of camera you choose and its power source. If you buy a wire-free outdoor security camera like the Arlo Pro 3, it will set up a bit differently from something like the Eufy Indoor Cam 2K, which is an indoor security camera that uses a power cord.

Either way, we’ll give you insight on installation and the best way to place your camera.

If you’re not sure what type of camera you want, check out some of our other reviews to explore your options:

How much does installation cost?

If you install your security camera yourself, then installation won’t cost you a penny. If you prefer to have the pros do it for you, then you’ll need to drop some dollars on that service.

DIY security camera installation

If you can install a camera yourself, then it’s pretty much free after you pay for the equipment.

Most cameras these days are not only easy to install on your own, but also designed to be as pain-free as possible. Some you can set on a table, mount on a wall, or attach to a magnetic surface. However, not everyone is comfortable with drilling into their walls.

The easiest cameras to install on your own will be wire-free, battery-powered cameras like the EufyCam 2 or the Reolink Argus 3. If you have an indoor security camera, then those are also quite easy to set up yourself. You just need to put the camera where you want it and plug in the power cord.

Professional installation

If you get one of the professionally installed Best Home Security Systems we’ve recommended (namely ADT or Vivint), you’ll get an installation tech who will install everything for you, including your cameras. Vivint’s system installation fee is $49, but ADT’s fees are significantly more. You may pay as much as $199 for that pro installation.

If you want to get a whole network of home security cameras that integrate into your home security system, then it’s much easier to have a professional install those cameras for you. It’s also easier to have the pros install video doorbells, so you don’t have to mess around with electrical wires.

Both ADT and Vivint offer professionally installed doorbell cameras.

Pro installation for standalone security cameras

If you’re buying a camera yourself and want to have it professionally installed, then there are third-party services like HelloTech that are a great way to find local professional installation for security cameras. Plus it’s actually a decent bang for your buck compared to higher prices from CCTV companies.

How much you’ll pay depends on what type of device you have and potentially other factors as well, such as your location. But HelloTech does list starting prices for security cameras and video doorbells.

Smart security camera installation price: starts at $129

Video doorbell installation price: starts at $99

How should you position your security camera?

Not everyone has to deal with thieves and break-ins (thank goodness). Some of us just want to check on deliveries or see who visits our house while we’re away. Other people want a way to check on family members or pets.

Decide which purpose is most important to you and place your camera where it will best be able to see what you want to keep an eye on.

Indoors or outdoors?

The biggest difference between indoor and outdoor cameras is their ability to endure the weather. The last thing you want is for your new camera to quit in the first blizzard of the year, especially since you’ve noticed your snow boots have gone missing, too.

Check the operating temperature and approved use for the camera you want to buy. There are some models, like the SimpliSafe SimpliCam, that can be modified to work outside as well as indoors.

Where to install an indoor security camera

Installing an indoor camera can be as easy as finding the right spot, plugging it in, turning it on, and syncing it with your mobile or desktop app. While some may require drilling, most indoor cameras we’ve come across won’t require anything more than a screwdriver.

A good indoor camera should have a decent field of view, which you can get with a higher corner or shelf. The best places will have a clear view of the room, a place to hide the camera from thieves, and very little foot traffic (to avoid unplugging the camera or tripping on the cord).

Where to install an outdoor security camera

The most popular places for an outdoor camera are above the garage door or looking over a front or back porch. For a garage camera, make sure you have a large field of view. For a porch camera, make sure your camera is mostly looking at a driveway or walkway to capture all the action possible with a smaller field of view. You may want to consider a doorbell camera like the Nest Hello, the Arlo Video Doorbell, or the RemoBell S.

Should you get a wired, wireless, or wire-free camera?

There are generally three power options for security cameras, although the terminology can get a bit confusing:

  1. Wired, which means the camera relies on wires to connect to both power and your internet.
  2. Wireless, which means your camera can connect to the internet wirelessly but requires a power cord. Sometimes these cameras are still called “wired” since they require a cord.
  3. Wire-free, where the camera runs off a battery pack and doesn’t need any wires at all. Sometimes these cameras are called wireless since they run without power cords.

With wired installation, you’re a little limited in terms of placement, but your connection will be more reliable and secure. Consider where you have to run the wire and how much length you need. You can always buy longer extension cables.

Steps for installing a wired security camera

  1. Find a stable spot on the wall.
  2. Some cameras may require finding a stud, while others will come with drywall anchors.
  3. Check for existing wiring.
  4. Mark and drill the appropriate holes.
  5. Thread the wiring back through the wall to attach it to the monitoring source.

Just make sure the hole you drill is big enough to pull the wire through but not so big that you can no longer mount the camera.

A big benefit of wire-free (sometimes still called wireless) cameras is being able to place them nearly anywhere. But you’ll still want to make sure you’re within range of your Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or other wireless connections.

That said, if your outdoor camera needs a power cord, like the Nest Cam Outdoor, you should be able to drill easily through denser materials like brick or stucco if needed.

Make sure you place your security camera out of reach so a thief or guilty child can’t just grab it and leave. Tech installers recommend placing your cameras at least nine feet above ground—but just don’t go so high you can’t see what’s happening down below.

The Furbo Dog Camera has winning features that get our tails wagging more than any other smart camera. In addition to a treat launcher and night vision, Furbo Dog Camera is the only pet camera we encountered with sound detection that senses barking. If your pup has a bad barking habit, the Furbo will alert you. From the app, you can also talk to your pet and give them a yummy treat.

And, while it’s on the pricey side, it’s not the most expensive camera on our list.

Here are the top pet cameras for 2022

Reviews: Best pet cameras

1. Furbo dog camera: Best for dogs

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

The Furbo Dog Camera was designed for dogs and their best friends (you!).

It sports two-way audio, night vision, and a pet treat dispenser—all controllable from the mobile app. You can monitor and play with your pup from work, while you’re on vacation, or from down the hall.

Our favorite feature is the bark alert, a feature that sends alerts to your phone when the Furbo detects barking. It’s especially helpful if you have a vocal canine.

Furbo also has two-way audio, so you can talk to your dog from the app. The audio through the speaker is clear enough to catch your dog’s attention, too. So whether they’re barking up a storm or just lonely, you can talk to them through your mobile device.

Our only complaint is that Furbo requires a subscription to use its cloud storage service if you want to keep records of your dog’s activities. Otherwise, we consider it the best pet camera, paws-down.

You’ll get a 90-day free trial, but after that, you’ll have to pay $6.99 per month or $69 for the whole year. With a price tag around $200, this might be out of reach for many.

2. Skymee Owl Robot: Most fun

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

The Skymee Owl Robot is like a pet for your pet. It’s part robot, part treat dispenser, part HD camera, but all fun for pets and their owners.

Like all the pet cams we’ve picked, it comes with a companion app that lets you talk to your furry friends and control the camera. The big difference is the Owl Robot can move around the house and interact with your pet.

This cylindrical robot is built for speed with its two tough plastic wheels on each side. The app has pre-programmed actions, so you can make the robot wiggle, spin, and flip to catch your pet’s attention.

Once your pet catches the Owl Robot (or whenever you press the treat button), it dispenses treats.

We love how interactive this Skymee pet camera is. You can play with your dogs and cats from anywhere with Wi-Fi and even take the Owl Robot out for walks with your dogs.

With all the features and controls in the app, you and your pup are bound to have lots of fun, even when you aren’t home.

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

Smart home monitoring devices keep an eye on your home when you’re away, so you can check in and control your home remotely. Smart monitoring devices are quick and simple to set up, plus you can control them easily from your smartphone.

What is a smart home camera?

Smart cameras are designed to give you peace of mind by keeping an eye on your house around the clock. You can choose from a smart indoor camera or smart outdoor camera – they’re very similar but are designed to live in or out of the home. Both of these types of cameras will pick up motion and notify you when they detect someone in the area.

Hive View, our smart indoor camera, automatically starts recording if it detects motion or sound. You can set Hive View to only detect people, so if your dog is at home during the day, he won’t set off any alerts. Hive View can even send a snapshot image straight to your phone when it records a person. Plus, you can check in any time you like with the live streaming feature.

Why should I buy a smart home camera?

A smart camera is a fuss-free solution, allowing you to check at the tap of a button that your home is secure. Smart cameras let you know what’s going on in your house or notify you when someone walks through the front door – perfect for people who work late or who aren’t at home during the day. A smart camera can also be used for:

  • Peace of mind – check that all is well at home and that everything is as it should be
  • Post – if the postman leaves a parcel outside your house, you can check where it is on your smartphone
  • Pets – make sure the dog isn’t jumping up on the sofa, or the cat isn’t clawing the curtains
  • Children – check the kids are safely home from school
  • Family – relax knowing that your loved ones are safe at home

Combine a Hive View with a Hive Motion Sensor for even better home monitoring. A motion sensor will also send a notification to your smartphone when it detects movement and you can check the status of activity in the Hive app at any time. A Hive Window or Door Sensor is great when you want to monitor who is coming in and out of your home. Link them up with a smart camera and you could even start recording automatically. when your front door is opened or closed.

How does the Hive smart camera work with my phone?

To set up your Hive indoor smart camera, all you have to do is download the relevant app to your smartphone, follow the install instructions and you’re ready to go. You can also use a tablet or a computer to control your smart camera.

Is a smart camera easy to install?

Yes – all you need is an internet connection and the relevant app downloaded on your smartphone. You may also need a smart hub which connects to your WiFi to use all the features of your smart camera. Usually smart home hubs only work with your chosen brand’s devices, so if you’re looking to buy something from a new brand, just bear in mind you may also need a new hub.

Modern technology allows us to access real-time images of locations all across the globe. Some smart CCTV cameras will provide you with real-time surveillance options that can help to keep your home safe. So, what are the best ways to view your home in real time, from both an outdoor and an indoor perspective?

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

Smart home security cameras

The latest smart home security cameras – whether that’s indoor or outdoor models – will let you monitor your home in real time. You can connect up your home surveillance system to specialised apps on your smart devices to view real-time video footage from your home’s cameras.

Plus, if you take into consideration the additional night vision and infrared features on offer in countless home security cameras, you can up the real-time surveillance to 24 hours a day.

Smart, real-time security video gives you total convenience: you can monitor the activity inside and outside your home remotely, whatever time of day or night you like.

Just make sure that your home’s WiFi connection is strong enough to support all your security surveillance devices. This ensures they can all function and communicate well.

Customisable motion detection features (these might be a particularly good idea to incorporate into your outdoor home security cameras) also mean you won’t be bothered by unnecessary surveillance alerts.

Smart motion detection features can distinguish between suspicious movements in your home and normal, everyday activity. So, you’ll only be alerted with real-time security video when there’s an actual issue, rather that just a stray cat!

A question home owners often ask is: how real is real time?

You might be thinking of real-time as in applications like Google Earth, where you can enter pretty much any global address and access a pretty accurate street view of the place you’ve searched for.

But, these images are compiled over time, putting together the data from satellite images and Google Street View cars that actively record images of the areas as they drive around them.

So, when we access these “real-time” images on Google Earth, we’re actually seeing the results of information that’s been collated over a long period of time, from several different sources. In many places, privacy regulations prohibit the live surveillance of public areas.

Plus, images on Google Earth have to comply with privacy regulations, so you might see blurred out faces of the people who happen to appear in them, for example.

Well, smart home security cameras are different. They really do provide you with a real-time surveillance view of your home. The live images will come solely from your home security devices, giving you unique control over what’s going on in and around your home.

Plus, you’ll get full resolution on the faces of the people included in the video footage, so that they can be easily identified. Some smart home security devices even offer incorporated facial recognition technology to facilitate this aspect of the surveillance process.

Link up your smart home security cameras to your selected smart devices and you can remotely view surveillance footage of your home in real time, no matter where you happen to be.

For that reason, many home owners opt for real-time home surveillance devices, due to the added peace of mind they give them while they’re away from home. That could just be during your normal working hours, or when you’re away on holiday for a while.

This real-time function is incredibly useful for deterring potential intruders when combined with night vision, motion detection and automatic security lighting features. We’ll talk a closer look at those added home security features a little later on.

How’s best to install your real-time home security system?

There are a couple of legal requirements you’ll need to bear in mind if you’re installing real-time surveillance systems in your home.

First up, you’ll need to make sure that your security cameras are only recording within the boundaries of your private property. There are strict regulations in place about recording video footage of public and shared spaces, so make sure that your home security devices comply with these at all times.

Secondly, if you employ anyone to work in your home or garden, you’ll need to let them know that they’ll be picked up by your real-time home surveillance system. They have the right to know that there will be security video recorded of them in real time.

They’ll also have the right to request that you delete any surveillance video that shows them and that you refrain from recording any similar surveillance footage of them in future.

Thirdly, you’ll need to make sure that you securely store your real-time surveillance footage in a way that complies with the applicable data protection regulations. You’ll need to make sure that you have a safeguarded storage system set up for your surveillance video.

Cloud storage could be the best option for ensuring this security, as well as allowing you to keep the security video without cluttering up your personal devices.

You’ll also want to make sure that you can easily access your security video for the purposes of providing evidence – of a break-in, for example – to the police or to your home insurance provider.

In the event of a security incident at your home, real-time surveillance footage not only provides you with the opportunity to act quickly to deter any potential intruder, but also to provide proper evidence of any crimes committed to the relevant authorities.

For example, if you view real-time security video via your smart devices while you’re away from home, you could remotely trigger your home’s smart security alarm to put off the intruder and to attract attention from people, or a police patrol, in the area.

Some smart surveillance cameras also incorporate automatic lighting features. These will turn on a motion detection-activated, harsh security light that will prevent intruders from acting under the cover of darkness.

Similarly, additional night vision features will enable you to accurately trigger your home’s smart security alarm, even if you’re viewing real-time surveillance video at night.

Why not check out the Netatmo range of Smart Indoor and Outdoor Security Cameras? Fully customisable and suitable for integrating into an existing smart home security system, Netatmo’s surveillance cameras are a real asset to your home security.

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

Products featured are independently selected by our editorial team and we may earn a commission from purchases made from our links; the retailer may also receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes.

If the smart indoor camera is the foundation of a good home security system, the smart outdoor camera is a great next step. Setting one up will allow you to capture would-be thieves the moment they get onto your property, which gives you more options to be proactive before they enter your home.

A smart outdoor security camera will also give you the ability to check your front stoop for packages, or see who’s at the front door before deciding whether or not to open it. You can also set them up to keep an eye on specific parts of your house, like your basement door, or side basement window, that aren’t being monitored by an indoor security camera.

One of the best parts about the smart outdoor cameras in this guide is that they’re made by companies that produce a lot of security hardware, so you may be able to integrate the one you get into a larger system, and manage it all through a single app. The days of stringing cables all over your backyard, or making holes to keep them underground or inside your home are over.

In many cases you can set these cameras up within 15 minutes once you’ve decided where to put it. Just make sure to have a WiFi network that’s strong enough to reach the cameras; if your connection is spotty, we have some recommendations on how to improve it here.

What You Need to Know Before Buying an Outdoor Security Camera

There are many factors to consider when choosing the right smart outdoor security camera for you; below are the most important ones, which we considered while we were researching this list.

Resolution: The most important technical spec of a smart outdoor camera is its resolution. The higher the resolution, the clearer the picture. You’ll want the best-looking video possible in case of a break-in, because it’s the piece of evidence you’re going to review, and possibly turn over to the police. All of the cameras on this list capture video in HD (either 720P or 1080P), so you’ll get a very high-quality recording of any suspicious activity.

Smart-home integration: All smart outdoor security cameras have the ability to send you alerts when they sense motion, and send a live video feed to your smartphone, tablet, or computer at all times. But many also integrate with smart-home platforms like Amazon’s Alexa, allowing you to arm or disarm the camera with just your voice.

Durability: You’re going to keep these cameras outside, so they need to be designed to withstand the elements without getting damaged. The durability of technology is measured on the IP (Ingress Protection) scale, which tells you how susceptible it is to dust and water. Any rating above an IP64 means the gadget is capable of being exposed to rainstorms without the risk of serious damage. All of the cameras on this list have a higher IP rating than that, though, so they shouldn’t fail due to inclement weather.

Power source: There’s a good chance you have more outlets available inside your home than outside, so we made sure to pick a lot of outdoor cameras that have rechargeable batteries with a long life. In some cases, the smart outdoor security camera comes in a battery or cabled version. Using a battery-powered camera does mean you’ll have to recharge it once or twice a year, but it’s worth the minor inconvenience since it allows you to place your camera anywhere on your property.

Subscriptions: Some smart outdoor security cameras require you to pay a monthly or annual subscription fee to store video clips in the cloud, so you can view them later. Video clips are taken each time the camera senses motion. You’ll always have the option to save a video clip to your phone if you catch the notification on your phone when motion is detected without paying the fee. A subscription allows you to review clips if you miss that notification.

This brand-new startup allows you to transform your Apple or Android smartphone into a web-connected camera, capable of saving up to 30 days’ worth of video on the cloud.

With Camio, you can watch your data stream from anywhere you get a connection, and even access a simpler solution for short-term monitoring called “Camio Daily.” The most innovative element of this app is that it’s selective about the data it collects. The algorithm can easily tell the difference between someone walking up to your front door and a tree branch blowing in the wind.

Because Camio relies on the performance of your tablet, smartphone, or computer, any updates, re-starts, or accidental shutdowns of the devices would mean that you lose access to your feed. This may mean that it isn’t perfect for long vacations, but could be ideal for when you want to check up on things from work or a short trip.

    2. Alfred

The Alfred home security camera is similar to Camio in that it also delivers home monitoring from your smartphone. Unlike Camio, however, Alfred also includes a two-way communication solution so that you can communicate with a house sitter, or say hi to your dog while you’re at work, if you want to. In fact, you could even make it sound like someone’s at home if you’re concerned about a shady character outside.

The app offers a night-vision mode for when it gets darker, but the quality of your video is likely to vary depending on the type of smartphone you have. This means that you might struggle to see much on cheaper models. However, if you’re confident in the pixels on your phone, and you’re not leaving the home for too long, it could be a great way to keep an eye on a babysitter or check on the house when you’re out for a night on the town.

    3. Vivint Sky App

If you’re looking for a smart home app that you can use throughout your vacation to help you enjoy more peace of mind on-the-move, the Vivint Sky app could be perfect. While you do need to be a customer of Vivint to use the application, you can enjoy a range of home automation functions from the moment you sign up. For instance, you can adjust your lights so they brighten when you arrive home from work, or lock the doors if you forgot before you left.

Whether you’re just watching over the household pet with live video, or arming and disarming your security measures remotely, Vivint has countless options available for home security. You can even control small appliances and program your thermostat from your smartphone. If you ask a family member to visit your home while you’re away, you can also add them as a user remotely, so you don’t get a security alert.

    4. ADT

More of a complete security system than a basic app, the ADT security solution offers complete home monitoring for those who need absolute peace of mind when they’re away from home for more than a couple of days. The ADT Pulse system offers remote monitoring from your iPad, computer, or smartphone so you can adjust your thermostat, view cameras, close your garage door, or control your locks remotely.

ADT allows you to check your home security at your leisure, adjust your lights to make it seem like someone is home, and record security camera feeds, too. You can specify your alerts so that you’re informed by phone or email if there’s a temperature problem, a fire, or a potential intrusion.

    5. Ivideon

Designed for people who want to stay close to their home while they’re away, Ivideon is an app available for Android, iOS, Windows, Linux, and so other platforms. With more than 2 million users around the world, the system has earned a reputation as one of the best pieces of security technology available for both home and business customers.

With Ivideon, you’ll need to have compatible cameras installed into your home or office, but once you’re all set up, the system is practically flawless. You can record as much information as you want, and store it on the cloud so that you can use the data for legal purposes. You can also send audio back over the web, too, which is great for scaring criminals — or soothing lonely pets.

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

It may surprise Atlanta homeowners to learn that the security cameras which protect them from criminals could also make them a criminal if their camera setup infringes on another’s privacy.

That’s according to Title 16, Chapter 11, Article 3 of Georgia’s state law code, which addresses residential surveillance camera laws and other criminal conduct related to breaches of privacy.

Generally speaking, security cameras on your property may infringe on someone else’s privacy if the video footage has access to.

    • . a neighbor’s front or back yard.
    • . windows or doors of a neighbor’s home.
    • . communal areas of a residential complex.
    • . rooms within your own home that are considered private (such as a bathroom).

Security camera laws in the state of Georgia can be tricky. If you have any concerns after reading this blog, don’t hesitate to visit our video surveillance page to learn more. Alternatively, you can call 800.552.1111 to speak with an Ackerman Security Pro directly.

How To Tell If Your Outdoor Security Cameras Are Placed Legally

Are you worried an outdoor camera could be infringing on someone else’s privacy? When it doubt, always take it down. That’s step #1 to make sure you don’t run into trouble from the law.

A rule of thumb is to imagine if the camera were a person. If a neighbor saw this “person” watching that specific area all the time, would it make him or her uncomfortable? Even if you’re not sure, protect yourself by taking the camera down.

With that said, let’s look at some more concrete examples of an illegal surveillance camera setup.

Visibility of a neighboring private yard

A video camera pointed toward the front or back of your own home may capture parts or all of a neighbor’s front and back yards as well. That may seem insignificant at the time, but it can land you in hot water if your neighbor sees the cameras and calls the authorities.

Homeowners with any kind of barrier around their homes (a wall, trees, bushes–anything that affords some privacy) may have a case against you if cameras from your home can view through or beyond those barriers.

    You’re safe if.

    • Your neighbor’s yard has no barriers to protect their privacy (or open barriers such as a chain link fence).
    • A neighbor’s yard is so obscured from view (by a wall, trees or something else) that your cameras cannot see beyond them.

Visibility of the inside of a private home

A residential security camera that can capture footage of the inside of a neighbor’s home is illegal in the state of Georgia. A homeowner could be subject to prosecution for their camera placement even if the inside of their neighbor’s home is obscured by curtains or blinds.

When we install security cameras in a residential home, we always check to make sure the following areas of a neighbor’s home are out of the picture:

    • Front and backyard windows
    • Screen doors and sliding glass doors
    • Garage door entrances

Your HOA also has laws in place governing security cameras

Residents of a Homeowner’s Association (HOA) should be aware of their community’s guidelines for security camera placement before installing surveillance devices in and around their home.

If a camera has a direct line of sight of a neighbor’s home or a shared common space like a communal playground or golf course, it can put the owner of the camera at risk of litigation.

Before you install security cameras in an HOA community:

    • Read the HOA’s guidelines on surveillance cameras.
    • Make sure there’s no line-of-sight of a neighbor’s property.
    • Make sure there’s no line-of-sight of communal property (like a clubhouse or swimming pool.)

How to Tell If Your Indoor Security Cameras Are Placed Legally

Most homeowners understand the value of having laws on outdoor cameras because they could in theory record footage from someone else’s private property. But did you know that the placement of indoor surveillance cameras may also be illegal?

Here’s what Georgia homeowners need to consider when setting up the inside of their home with security cameras.

Is the camera recording a private area of the home?

Citation §16-11-62 of Georgia’s state law code makes it illegal to “observe, photograph, or record the activities of another which occur in any private place and out of the public view.”

A “private place” could be any room of a home where a guest has a reasonable expectation for privacy. The most obvious location would be a bathroom. But placing a security camera in a guest room could also be considered a breach of privacy.

That’s not to say nanny cams or other hidden cameras are completely illegal within a home. But there are some limitations on how they can be used and how the footage can be used in a court of law.

Whether or not someone is currently living in the home

State laws restrict where a homeowner can set up indoor cameras to protect the privacy rights of family and guests. But what happens if the homeowner is leaving and no guests or family are expected inside the home until they get back?

In this case, it’s perfectly legal to set up security cameras throughout the home. A criminal who decides to enter your home when you’re away waives their right to privacy when they break in. Therefore, they could be recorded in a private area and the homeowner would be innocent in the eyes of the law.

Always review your security cameras to make sure they do not infringe on someone else’s privacy. If there is even the possibility that a camera has a view of someone else’s property, or even communal property in the case of HOAs, you should relocate the camera somewhere else.

    • Which laws cover a surveillance device, including a residential security camera
    • Where to get help with a dispute

An organisation or agency that uses a surveillance device, such as a security camera or CCTV, generally must follow several laws.

If the Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act) covers the organisation or agency, then any personal information they collect through a surveillance device must comply with the Australian Privacy Principles. The Privacy Act covers Australian Government agencies and organisations with an annual turnover of more than $3 million, and some other organisations. Such an organisation or agency must:

    • tell you that your image may be captured before you’re recorded
    • make sure recorded personal information is secure and destroyed or de-identified when it is no longer needed

State and territory surveillance and monitoring laws also cover surveillance devices. For more information, contact the Attorney-General’s Department in your state or territory.

    Residential security cameras

If your neighbour has a security camera pointed at your house and you’re worried about your privacy, first try to talk to your neighbour. If this doesn’t fix the problem, you could ask your local community justice or neighbourhood mediation centre for help (see the table below).

The Privacy Act doesn’t cover a security camera operated by an individual acting in a private capacity but state or territory laws may apply. For more information, contact the Attorney-General’s Department in your state or territory. However, if you’re concerned about your safety, contact the police.

You could also contact your local council to find out if the practice contravenes any local laws. Some councils require planning permission for security cameras.

If your property is part of a strata title, check the by-laws to see if they cover installing or using security cameras.

Security cameras have become a common sight in public places like shopping malls, banks, schools, hospitals, airports, casinos and road intersections, but did you know that they’re also becoming an increasingly important part of residential security systems? Just as they help to curb crime and increase personal safety in public venues, surveillance cameras can also help to protect you, your family and your possessions right at home.

Below are 8 Great Ideas on How to Use Security Cameras as Part of Your Home Safety Plan:

Monitor the Perimeter of Your Property.

A great way to deter trespassers is to mount outdoor security cameras to your home’s exterior, and keep them aimed at the perimeter of your property. Combining several cameras can give you a nearly 360° view of your property line, and are an excellent way to keep an eye out for unwanted visitors in real time, or provide you with playback surveillance footage in the event of a robbery.

See Who’s at the Front Door.

Whether you don’t have the type of front door that’s right for a peephole, or just want to be extra sure before opening your home to someone, a small surveillance camera can let you answer a knock at the door with confidence. Save on data storage by using a motion-activated camera that only films when movement is detected on your front step, and keep a small CCTV monitor handy in the kitchen or your home office so you can easily see who’s there.

    Nanny Cams for Child Protection

Nothing is more valuable than your children, so it can be tough to rest easy about their care when you leave them at home with outside babysitters and nannies. One way to find peace of mind, and get a firsthand look at how your kids are treated when you’re not there, is to invest in a “nanny cam,” a small concealed camera that’s disguised to look like an ordinary household object. These hidden cameras are ideal for capturing child/caretaker interactions, and let you view in real time or play back later.

Keep an Eye on your Garage

Despite the fact that they’re generally far easier to break into than other buildings and often house expensive vehicles and equipment, home garages tend be security deficient. Not to mention that they’re often left wide open with their contents in full view of passersby.

Cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs and high-end power tools can become extremely tempting to potential thieves, so protect them with more than a rolling garage door or lock and key. Installing a visible but out of reach remote-access security camera lets unauthorized visitors know that they’re being watched, and enables you to check up on your valuables even when you’re on the road.

Monitor Points of Entry to Prevent Theft.

Bad guys don’t always use the front door when trying to get into your home, so be sure not to ignore potential entry points like windows, French doors and basement doors. While it’s by no means necessary to mount a surveillance camera near every single access point, it’s not a bad idea to have an extra pair of eyes watching windows and doors that aren’t visible to neighbors, can’t be seen from the street, or are hidden by trees, tall hedges, or other visual obstructions.

Make Your Own Video Baby Monitor

Standard audio baby monitors are great, but if you need to work or relax in another room and don’t want to get up to investigate every time your sleeping baby makes a peep, it’s time to set up a video baby monitor that transmits both sounds and images.

They’re simple to put together: just install a CCTV video camera next to or above your baby’s crib, and have it broadcast audio and video to a monitor in the room(s) of your choosing. That way, when you hear a baby-related noise, you can just glance at the monitor to decide whether or not you need to check in person.

    Protect Your Home Office

If you run a business out of your home, chances are you have work equipment, money and inventory on premises. A security camera can not only help prevent the theft of work-related valuables, but can also multitask by monitoring employees, clients and vendors who come in and out of your home throughout the business day.

Watch the pool and play areas from indoors

Even though they’re more independent and can show better judgement than very young children, older kids still need outdoor supervision, especially if there’s a swimming pool or large playground equipment nearby. Even if you need to step indoors for a few minutes, you can still keep a protective eye on your children by installing closed-circuit cameras near your swimming pool or outdoor play area to alert you to any falls, fall-ins, or other playtime mishaps.

Home Security Cameras provide one of the best security additions to any home. These systems can be viewed from any internet access point including your smart phone and will provide real-time viewing of all activities. Home owners now have the ability to monitor their property, children, service providers and unwanted visitors 24 hours a day. Imagine being away from your home and being able to see the person ringing your doorbell and casing your home before attempting to break in!

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

Advances in video and wireless technology (and the introduction of faster broadband) have resulted in a growing demand for security cameras. Long gone are the days of replaying hours of tape; today’s cameras are more affordable, with footage easily viewed, stored and instantly retrieved.

With so many different types of security cameras available, how do you identify the right option for your household? Do you even need security cameras and, if so, how many cameras should you install and where should they be positioned? Do you grab an off-the-shelf product or call in the experts to provide professional advice?

Our guide to security cameras covers all of these questions and more.

    Where to start?
Regardless of the type of property you live in, home security cameras can be an effective warning sign to would be burglars and also enable visual verification of events if required. With a choice of indoor and outdoor camera options, and the ability to access vision remotely through a smart device, it’s easy to see why interest in home security cameras is growing.

Do I need CCTV or standalone Wi-Fi cameras?
The two main home security camera options are standalone Wi-Fi cameras (also known as lifestyle cameras) and CCTV (closed circuit television) systems. Lifestyle cameras operate as a standalone unit through an internet connection and can be placed anywhere within the home making them the perfect adaptable solution for any style of property. CCTV adds another layer of security to your home using an NVR (networked video recorder) that provides many variable options that can be tailored to your home’s specific requirements.

    Lifestyle cameras
Easy to install and able to be expanded as needs change, a lifestyle camera set up allows you to view live feeds of your home or saved security recordings using your smart phone, tablet or computer. These cameras can capture motion or event-triggered video clips, making it easy to find exactly what you want to watch later. Visuals can be sent directly to you via push notification or email, for example when the front door opens, a notification will be sent when motion is detected. Lifestyle cameras are an affordable extension of a monitored home security package, allowing you to check in on the house from anywhere at any time while having a 24/7 support centre on hand if needed.

With technology continually evolving, some lifestyle camera models now feature infrared radiation (IR) night vision, wider dynamic range, adjustable sensitivity and high definition (HD). ADT lifestyle cameras offer all of these features. The ADT Indoor Camera comes with a sleek compact design, flexible mounting options and secure cloud recording. Look out for increased Wi-Fi range in the newest models, for even greater flexibility when positioning cameras around the home. The ADT Outdoor Camera is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, features excellent low-light performance, a weatherproof case with UV protection and a night vision range of up to 12 metres.

    CCTV
If you would prefer non-stop 24/7 recording, ADT offers a comprehensive CCTV solution that may be tailored to each property’s security requirements. CCTV is commonly used in outdoor environments to provide more insight into what has transpired on your premises. Whether you’re away from home for a day or longer, your CCTV system is still active and recording in the background. ADT customers can also set their CCTV cameras to ‘motion activated’ mode and have the ability to connect up to 16 high resolution cameras. The system is simple to operate and view the home from different angles. These systems can include multiple recording resolutions and are connected to a networked video recorder (NVR) that captures and stores footage.

A CCTV system requires a wired installation of robust camera units that are built to withstand vandalism and severe weather conditions. They also offer high quality vision, with an average resolution of 6MP significantly greater than standalone lifestyle cameras. The cameras can be viewed on both a split screen monitor that displays a visual feed from each camera, as well as remotely via a smart device.

    Should I call the professionals?
For those that take their security seriously, consider the benefits of professionally installed cameras that are backed up with an alarm system and back-to-base monitoring.

Security professionals are trained to identify things that the average home owner may not consider; they know where to effectively position security cameras, will ensure that the right type of camera is installed, check there’s nothing obstructing the camera’s view, and identify which viewing angles work best.

#1. Security Camera Linked to Phone: How to Connect (Easiest Way to Go)

To make your business or home security cameras connected to your phone and see the happening while you’re away, you need to get a quality surveillance camera or system with both surveillance cameras and apps that are compatible with both iOS and Android systems. The good news is that almost all surveillance cameras in the market, particularly IP security cameras, can be linked easily to smartphones. However, the surveillance apps have great differences.

The best option is to go for the hardware made for easy to use and practical such as the CCTV security pro camera mobile app. The self-developed smartphone apps offered by the security camera companies are the best choice.

We will explain how you can connect security cameras to phones with or without Wi-Fi and network. Let’s take you through the two options:

    1. How to Connect Security Camera to Phone with WiFi

So how do I connect a CCTV camera to a mobile phone?

Basically, 3 simple steps if the WiFi is available. I’ll take ZOSI cameras as an example.

  1. Install and start ZOSI Smart App on your phone
  2. Include your security camera in the app via the QR Code or the model code
  3. Tap on the surveillance camera connected to the smartphone to check out a live view
  4. (Optional) Set settings like option detection, alert frequency, etc. to match your monitoring needs

Note: Some of these steps may vary because of the particular surveillance camera app; as such, you need to check the app system to set up a step for more info.

This video demonstrates how to connect a home security camera to cell phone taking ZOSI C190 Pro as an example:

Share All sharing options for: The best home security system you can install yourself

The do-it-yourself home security market has exploded over the past couple of years and for good reason. It’s now possible to install a fully monitored security system in your home in as little as 15 minutes and for hundreds of dollars less than it would cost for a traditional security system. In addition, these systems are not permanently wired into your house, so they are ideal if you’re renting or plan to take them with you when you move. They can even be installed in apartments with ease.

A good home security system is able to monitor the entry points to your home, such as doors and windows, look for motion inside your home, sound a loud alarm, and be able to call authorities if you’re not home and the alarm is triggered. It should also be able to monitor for fires, water leaks, and other emergencies when you’re away from home. Finally, a good home security system is easy to arm, so you’re encouraged to actually use it, and easy to disarm when you get home.

In addition to monitoring your home’s activity with door sensors and motion detection, many home security systems also support cameras, either inside or outside your home. This is a nice feature to have if you want to build a complete security system, but cameras aren’t necessary if you just want to secure your home from intruders or monitor for emergencies.

One thing that is necessary is a professional monitoring option, which is available on all of the best home security systems. These monitoring plans require monthly subscription fees that vary in price, but they are still cheaper than traditional home security plans. Further, having a monitored security system installed in your home also qualifies for a discount on most home insurance plans, which can offset some of the cost of the subscription fee. (In my experience, the discount on my home insurance covered about 25 percent of the subscription of an average plan, but your mileage may vary depending on your location and the size of your home.)

All of the self-installed systems I tested can function without a monitoring plan, but then they are limited to just sounding an alarm inside your home and in some cases, pushing a notification to your phone and lack the ability to automatically dispatch authorities or emergency personnel. Since phone batteries die and cellular service varies depending on where you are, a push notification is generally a poor method of triaging when your home security system has been tripped.

This article will be continuously updated as new systems are released and we’re able to test more, so if you’re not ready to jump on a home security system or you’re not happy with the options available right now, be sure to check back in the future.

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

When you tally up all of the things that quality for a great do-it-yourself home security system, there’s one option that stands out from the rest and that’s SimpliSafe. SimpliSafe offers the most comprehensive system in a box, without being the most expensive. It is easy to install, has some of the most discreet interior sensors for doors, windows, and motion, and integrates with other smarthome gadgets like Nest thermostats and August locks, as well as virtual assistants like Amazon Alexa.

SimpliSafe’s system consists of a base unit with a speaker, a battery-powered keypad that can be placed or mounted anywhere, door / window sensors, motion sensors, glass break sensors, auxiliary sirens, freeze sensors, water sensors, smoke detectors, and even a panic button. In addition to the keypad, you can arm the system with Alexa, SimpliSafe’s mobile app, or a keyfob, and you can disarm it with the app or the keyfob.

The base unit is the main hub of the SimpliSafe system, and though it needs to be plugged in to a power outlet, it has a 24-hour backup battery in case of a power outage. It also connects to the internet through either its built-in cellular connection or your Wi-Fi network, so you do not need to plug it into your router and can place it anywhere in your home. The base station has a 95db alarm — the optional auxiliary siren screams at an ear-piercing 105db.

How to set up a camera to monitor your home when you’re away

SimpliSafe’s battery-operated keypad and keyfob make arming and disarming the system very easy

SimpliSafe sells various size kits depending on your needs. The basic kit offers a base station, keypad, single door / window sensor, and motion sensor, while the top of the line package has all of those things plus a keyfob, three more door / window sensors, another motion detector, auxiliary siren, freeze detector, water leak detector, smoke detector, and panic button. You can also add cameras or more sensors as needed to the system, as well.

The system will work without a professional monitoring plan, but SimpliSafe offers two no-contract plans that include both police and fire department alerts. The basic $15-per-month plan supports all of the SimpliSafe’s sensors, has 24/7 monitoring, and cellular backup in case your Wi-Fi network goes down. The more expensive $25-per-month plan adds the ability to control the system from your phone, unlimited backup recording for SimpliSafe’s cameras, and smart home integrations. It’s a little frustrating that SimpliSafe gates the smart home integrations and smartphone app behind its most expensive plan, but it’s less expensive than a traditional security system and can be canceled and restarted at any time.

SimpliSafe’s mobile and web app controls are also very basic, and don’t have nearly the design or polish of some of its competitors. They get the job done, but they won’t win any awards for their eye candy. And though SimpliSafe does support setting Nest thermostats to away modes when the alarm is set and integrates with August locks, its smart home integrations aren’t nearly as extensive as some of the other security systems I tested.

In addition, the adhesive on two of the door sensors I tested did not stick well to my doors, requiring me to double up the tape. It remained secured after that, but it was an annoyance during the first day of testing the SimpliSafe. No other system I tested had issues with the mounting tape provided for its sensors.
