How to share skybell hd access with other users

If you want others in your household to see who’s at the door and when the doorbell was rung, you can share access through the SkyBell HD app on your phone. Here’s how to do it.

The SkyBell HD acts like any normal doorbell, hooking up to the existing doorbell wiring. However, it also connects to your Wi-Fi network and gives you a live video feed of whoever is at the door, as well as records video and even notifies you whenever there’s motion or the doorbell button is pressed.

You can give your family members access to all this through the app. Start off by opening up the SkyBell HD app on your phone and tapping on the settings gear button in the top-right corner of the screen.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

Scroll down and tap on “Manage Sharing”.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

Tap on “Invite Someone”.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

Enter in the email address of the person that you want to invite and then hit “Send” in the top-right corner.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

Tap on “Yes” when the confirmation pops up.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

This person will now show up under “Pending Invitations” in the app.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

While in this category, you can tap on their email address and either resend the invitation email or remove the invitation if they haven’t already signed up.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

At that same time, an email will be sent to them where they can create a SkyBell account and download the app onto their own phone. Once they’ve done that, their name will appear under “Current Subscribers” within the Sharing menu in the SkyBell HD app on your phone.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

Tapping on their name will allow you to give that user “Admin Access”, which will give them full access to everything in the app instead of just being able to view video and such. You can also remove their access from this screen as well.

If you get all kinds of different folks approaching your door, a video doorbell like the SkyBell HD is a worthwhile investment, but you may not be using it to its full potential. Here’s how to get the most out of your SkyBell HD video doorbell.

Change the Video Quality

How to share skybell hd access with other users

The SkyBell HD can stream and record video up to 1080p in resolution. However, if your internet connection can’t quite handle the load, you can change the video quality.

Just open up the settings in the SkyBell HD app and select “Image Quality”. From there, you can select a lower quality than 1080p, as far down as 480p. Keep in mind, this will make it more difficult to identify people at your door, so be sure to experiment and find the best balance that you can.

Share Access with Other Family Members

How to share skybell hd access with other users

The SkyBell doesn’t work nearly as well if you’re the only person in your household that has access to it, which is why you’ll want to share access to the video doorbell with other family members.

You can do this by going into the settings and tapping on “Manage Sharing”. From there, you can invite someone via email and they’ll be able to view the SkyBell’s live video feed and see past recordings.

Enable “Do Not Disturb”

How to share skybell hd access with other users

While technically it’s not called Do Not Disturb, the SkyBell HD has a feature where you can “mute” the doorbell so that when someone presses the button, it doesn’t actually ring the doorbell.

Jump into the settings and tap on “Indoor Chime”. From there, hit the toggle switch next to “Indoor Chime” to turn it off and mute the doorbell. Keep in mind, though, that this will still send you notifications through your phone unless you turn those off separately.

Adjust the Motion Sensitivity

How to share skybell hd access with other users

While you can get alerted on your phone whenever the doorbell button is pressed, you can also receive alerts whenever motion is detected. However, you’ll likely want to adjust the motion sensitivity.

In the settings, tap on “Motion Detection”. Enable it if it isn’t already and then select either “High”, “Medium”, or “Low” as far the sensitivity goes.

Download Videos for Sharing

How to share skybell hd access with other users

While you can view recorded videos in the SkyBell app, they go away after a certain amount of time. So if you want to keep any recordings for the future, you’ll want to download them in case you need to share them with the police or anyone else.

On iOS, you just swipe on a video and hit “Download”. On Android, just tap on the download button next to the video. It will then be saved to your phone’s local storage where you can do whatever you want with it.

Change the LED Color

How to share skybell hd access with other users

This isn’t really a huge feature of the SkyBell HD, but it does allow you to give it some personality. By default, the button lights up green, but you can change it to pretty much any color you want.

Tap on “LED” in the settings menu and then select “Color” on the next screen. From there, you can use the color picker to select your favorite color to use. You can even change the brightness of the button’s LED.

Take Advantage of the Live View Features

How to share skybell hd access with other users

When someone rings the doorbell and you go to view the live video feed, many users forget that there’s more you can do on this screen than just seeing who’s at the door.

For example, you can take a snapshot of the video feed at any time, as well as use the microphone to talk to the person at the door. You can even tap on the gear icon to access integration with other apps, like the Kevo app to unlock your door right from that screen.

Connect to IFTTT for More Functionality

How to share skybell hd access with other users

The Skybell HD comes with a considerable amount of customization and functionality, but you can do even more with it by linking it to IFTTT and taking advantage of some automation.

For example, you can have your smart lights blink whenever someone rings the doorbell, or you can have your porch light automatically turn on when motion is detected at your front door.

If you didn’t know Google Home actually allows you to listen to the music from Pandora, Spotify, Play Music, and also from YouTube Red. But what is most interesting that you can share your Google Home with other people of your choice.

So you can for example share it with your household. Therefore for example if you don’t have any music subscription, and at the same time someone else does, then you can setup Google Home to use it from their account, and here is how to do that.

You also need to know that some music services like Spotify needs a premium subscription, so that they can work on Google Home. For example if you are a primary account holder, and someone else from your family has Spotify Premium subscription, then you will need to change some settings so that Google can know to use their account for streaming music.

Ratings and Reviews

Cameras good app average

Cameras work good x2 HD slims and were the only slim ones that would fit in the narrow area I had without major mods to mounting. Picture /video quality is good. After a few years I had the plastic bracket just fall off and SkyBell sent me a replacement. One of the cameras motion sensor plastic cover has fallen off but still works. Silicone works good around the sides to seal up bc I have spiders living in one of mine setting the motion off lol. It would be nice if night mode had a option to disable the lights so to see the actual night video instead of reflections from the led lights which drown out the pictures beyond 3-5 feet. The app stopped getting updates over a year ago and it sometimes crashes and locks up. Also I’ve noticed random disconnects from the cams to the iPhone app even though I have WiFi extenders everywhere and WiFi signal is strong. Does the cameras receive firmware updates causing reboots randomly? Any chance there will be updates to the App and firmware soon? I can’t really complain though as skybell is one of the few cams that doesn’t require a subscription which I really like and appreciate. The cams I will give a 4/5. And the app 3/5. Thanks again for reading my review.

Used to work, now barely works

Like a number of others that have already reviewed this doorbell I had a similar experience. When I first installed this 3.5 months ago it worked great! I mean it never missed picking up motion and anytime anybody got anywhere close to the doorbell bam! Camera on! Now it’s just an expensive normal doorbell. SOB. It won’t pick up motion anymore. Don’t know what happened. All it does is activate the camera when the button is pressed but I can walk in and out of my front door ten times and it will never detect me or my roommate. About a month ago I called SkyBell customer service not once but twice. I was told that others were having a similar issue and that I need to let them upgrade me from version 5017 to 5025. I was told that would take 3 days. I waited a week. Nothing. I called back. I was told that yes I would have to keep waiting because it was taking them longer than normal and that they were having to do the upgrades one by one. They said this time that would be closer to two weeks. Well now I’ve waited a whole month and the only thing that has happened as the skybell motion sensing has gotten even worse. I mean it’s just pathetic. For something that originally worked great out of the box and had no flaws and did everything exceptionally well, it’s baffling how a reputable company can take something so positive and screw it all up. Really starting to regret skybell all together now. I hope they get their s#!£ figured out.

Great at first, but now it’s horrible!

When I first purchased and installed this door bell, it worked fine. After a few months, the doorbell stopped detecting motion. So people are able to walk right up to my front door and the doorbell detects absolutely nothing unless it’s pressed. Then and only then will I get a notification stating that someone rang the bell. As far as getting notifications that there was motion detected, that is no more. I’ve done absolutely everything that could be done to troubleshoot this issue and nothing seems to work. Oh, and as far as customer service goes, good luck. No matter what time of day that you call or how many times that you call, NO ONE EVER PICKS UP THE PHONE. You get to listen to an automated recording that states that they are experiencing a higher than usual call volume and to please be advised that your call will be transferred to a voicemail after 15 minutes (WHICH IS GUARANTEED TO HAPPEN). When someone called me back a day or two later, I was advised that my software might be out of date and that the only way to update it would be on their end. I was told to give it a couple of days and that I would get a phone call back. That never happened. I can almost guarantee that my software is not the issue and that they can’t figure out what the problem is.
I’m going to give the ring doorbell a shot.

In Windows 10, some features of file and folder sharing over a network have changed, including the removal of HomeGroup. Read on for answers to common questions about other changes to file and folder sharing in Windows 10.

To share a file or folder in File Explorer, do one of the following:

Right-click or press a file, select Give access to > Specific people.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

Select a file, select the Share tab at the top of File Explorer, and then in the Share with section select Specific people.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

If you select multiple files at once, you can share them all in the same way. It works for folders, too—share a folder, and all files in it will be shared.

To stop sharing in File Explorer, do one of the following:

Right-click or press a file or folder, then select Give access to > Remove access.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

Select a file or folder, select the Share tab at the top of File Explorer, and then in the Share with section select Remove access.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

File Explorer shows the “Remove access” option (“Stop sharing” in older versions of Windows 10) for all files, even those that aren’t being shared over a network.

Open File Explorer, then type \\localhost into the address bar.

Note: When you’ve shared a file from a folder in your user profile and you go to \\localhost, you’ll see your user profile and all its files there. This doesn’t mean that all of your files are shared—just that you have access to all your own files.

If you open File Explorer, go to Network, and see an error message (“Network discovery is turned off….”), you’ll need to turn on Network discovery to see devices on the network that are sharing files. To turn it on, select the Network discovery is turned off banner, then select Turn on network discovery and file sharing.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

To troubleshoot problems with sharing files or folders, follow the steps below on all computers from which you’re trying to share.

Make sure the computers are on the same network. For example, if your computers connect to the internet through a wireless router, make sure they all connect through the same wireless router.

If you’re on a Wi-Fi network, set it to Private. To find out how, read Make a Wi-Fi network public or private in Windows 10.

Turn on network discovery and file and printer sharing, and turn off password protected sharing.

Select the Start button, then select Settings > Network & Internet , and on the right side, select Sharing options.

Under Private, select Turn on Network discovery and Turn on file and printer sharing.

Under All Networks, select Turn off password protected sharing.

Make sharing services start automatically.

Press the Windows logo key + R.

In the Run dialog box, type services.msc, and then select OK.

Right-click each of the following services, select Properties, if they’re not running, select Start, and next to Startup type, select Automatic:

How to share skybell hd access with other users

Your operating system provides each user account with its own folders when you set up several different user accounts on the same computer. Shared folders allow you to share files between user accounts.

This process works similarly on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. These are all powerful multi-user operating systems with similar folder and file permission systems.

Windows

On Windows, the “Public” user’s folders are accessible to all users. You’ll find this folder under C:\Users\Public by default. Files you place in any of these folders will be accessible to other users, so it’s a good way to share music, videos, and other types of files between users on the same computer.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

Windows even adds these folders to each user’s libraries by default. For example, a user’s Music library contains the user’s music folder under C:\Users\NAME\as well as the public music folder under C:\Users\Public\. This makes it easy for each user to find the shared, public files. It also makes it easy to make a file public — just drag and drop a file from the user-specific folder to the public folder in the library.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

These Public folders can also be used to share folders publicly on the local network. You’ll find the Public folder sharing option under Advanced sharing settings in the Network and Sharing Control Panel.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

You could also choose to make any folder shared between users, but this will require messing with folder permissions in Windows. To do this, right-click a folder anywhere in the file system and select Properties. Use the options on the Security tab to change the folder’s permissions and make it accessible to different user accounts. You’ll need administrator access to do this.

Linux

This is a bit more complicated on Linux, as typical Linux distributions don’t come with a special user folder all users have read-write access to. The Public folder on Ubuntu is for sharing files between computers on a network.

You can use Linux’s permissions system to give other user accounts read or read-write access to specific folders. The process below is for Ubuntu 14.04, but it should be identical on any other Linux distribution using GNOME with the Nautilus file manager. It should be similar for other desktop environments, too.

Locate the folder you want to make accessible to other users, right-click it, and select Properties. On the Permissions tab, give “Others” the “Create and delete files” permission. Click the Change Permissions for Enclosed Files button and give “Others” the “Read and write” and “Create and Delete Files” permissions.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

Other users on the same computer will then have read and write access to your folder. They’ll find it under /home/YOURNAME/folder under Computer. To speed things up, they can create a link or bookmark to the folder so they always have easy access to it.

Mac OS X

Mac OS X creates a special Shared folder that all user accounts have access to. This folder is intended for sharing files between different user accounts. It’s located at /Users/Shared.

To access it, open the Finder and click Go > Computer. Navigate to Macintosh HD > Users > Shared. Files you place in this folder can be accessed by any user account on your Mac.

How to share skybell hd access with other users

These tricks are useful if you’re sharing a computer with other people and you all have your own user accounts — maybe your kids have their own limited accounts. You can share a music library, downloads folder, picture archive, videos, documents, or anything else you like without keeping duplicate copies.
