Windows 10’s Game DVR feature can slow your gaming performance by recording video in the background. If you don’t care about recording your gameplay, disable Game DVR for performance reasons.

This also disables the “Game Bar”, which often pops up when you start playing games. It’s only helpful if you want to take screenshots or record gameplay.

What Are Game DVR and the Game Bar?

The Game DVR feature in Windows 10 was originally part of the Xbox app, and it’s modeled on the similar feature on the Xbox One. Game DVR can automatically record video of your PC gameplay in the background with “background recording”, saving this video to a file when you choose. If you don’t choose to save it, Game DVR discards that video and continues recording in the background. This allows you to play games normally and then decide to save the last five minutes of gameplay to a file when something cool happens.

Unfortunately, Game DVR takes system resources. On a slower computer–or if you just want maximum graphical horsepower for your games–it can noticeably slow your in-game performance and lower your FPS. If you don’t care about recording your gameplay, you’ll want to disable this feature. This Game DVR feature may or may not be enabled by default, depending on your PC’s hardware.

The Game Bar is the graphical interface that allows you to record gameplay, save clips, and take screenshots with the Game DVR feature. It doesn’t necessarily lower your system performance, but it can get in the way by popping up. The Game Bar is always enabled by default on Windows 10.

Even after disabling Game DVR and the Game Bar, normal in-game screenshot shortcuts and NVIDIA’s game recording feature, formerly known as ShadowPlay, will still function. Game DVR is just one of many options for recording gameplay and taking screenshots.

How to Disable Game DVR

In Windows 10’s Creators Update, Game DVR and Game Bar settings have been moved to the main Settings application where they belong. They’re no longer buried in the Xbox application like they used to be.

To disable Game DVR, head to Settings > Gaming > Game DVR. Ensure the “Record in the background while I’m playing a game” option here is set to “Off”.

You’ll still be able to start a manual recording from the Game Bar, but Windows 10 won’t automatically record anything in the background.

How to Disable the Game Bar

To disable the Game Bar, head to Settings > Gaming > Game Bar. Set the “Record game clips, screenshots, and broadcast using Game bar” option here to “Off”.

You won’t see the Game bar in the future unless you return to this screen and turn it back on.

The Game DVR feature in Windows 10 allows you to record Game Play and Capture screen shots while playing games on your PC. However, you may want to disable Game DVR on your computer, in case you are noticing slowdown of Game Play and performance issues on your computer.

Disable Game DVR and Game Bar in Windows 10

The Game DVR feature in Windows 10 is modelled along a similar feature found in Xbox. Game DVR along with its interface “Game Bar” allows you to record PC Game Play, take Screen shots while playing games and share them on Social Media or store them locally on the PC.

As mentioned above, Game DVR is known to consume a lot of system resources and this can lead to performance issues on slower computers and slow down of Game Play, even on faster computers.

Hence, it does makes sense to disable Game DVR on low end PC’s and also on Mid-Range Gaming PC’s, in case this feature is slowing down Game Play or leading to other performance issues.

Once you disable Game DVR it also disables the “Game Bar” and you won’t be able to take Screen shots or record Videos of your Game Play using Game DVR.

Disable Game DVR in Windows 10

While Microsoft enables Game DVR by default on your computer, it does not provide any options in the Windows 10 Settings Menu to Disable or Configure Game DVR in any way.

In order to Disable Game DVR on your Computer, you will need to login to your Microsoft Account and follow the steps below.

1. Click on Windows 10 Start button and then click on the Xbox App, located at the bottom of the side-bar menu.

2. On the next screen, click on Next and sign-in to your Microsoft Account.

3. You will be prompted to Sign-in to your Microsoft Account , in case you are not already signed-in.

4. Once you are signed-in to Xbox App, click on the 3-line icon to launch a side-bar menu and then click on the Settings option located at the very bottom of the side-bar menu (See image below).

5. On the Xbox Settings screen, click on Game DVR. Next, scroll down and turn OFF the Background Recording option (See image below)

6. While you are still on Game DVR Screen, Turn OFF the option for Take Screenshots Using Game DVR Option (See image below).

This will prevent the Game DVR feature in Windows 10 from using up system resources on your computer for recording Videos of your Game Play.

The Game Bar in Windows 10 is a tool designed to help gamers capture video, broadcast their gameplay online, take screenshots, and quickly access the Xbox app. It’s an efficient tool, but not everyone needs to use it nor wants it on their PC. That’s especially true if something happens to go wrong with a Windows 10 update, rendering the Game Bar obsolete until an update from Microsoft comes down the pipe. Here are a few ways you can disable or remove the Game Bar and some of the features associated with it that might be affecting your PCs performance.

How to disable Game DVR

Game DVR, part of the Xbox Game Bar, records video in the background while you game so that you can grab a clip of an epic moment that happened out of the blue. This recording also takes up system resources, so if your rig is already chugging along trying to run an intensive game, you can disable Game DVR without fully disabling the Game Bar.

1. Right-click the Start button.
2. Click Settings.

If you’d like to re-enable the Game DVR, simply repeat the steps and toggle the switch to On.

How to disable Xbox Game Bar in Windows 10

If you have a Windows 10 PC and don’t plan on doing any sort of gaming at all (or you just don’t want to use Game Bar), you can disable the Game Bar completely. This means that nothing will happen when you hit the Windows key + G shortcut on your keyboard or hit the Xbox button on your gamepad.

1. Right-click the Start button.
2. Click Settings.

How to remove the Xbox Game Bar from Windows 10

If you’d like to completely remove the Xbox Game Bar, whether to avoid bugs or simply because you’d rather use other overlay systems, it can be done through Windows 10’s PowerShell. Here’s how it’s done, and how you can reverse the operation if you ever change your mind.

1. Right-click the Start button.
2. Click Windows PowerShell (Admin).

Type Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay | Remove-AppxPackage and hit Enter on your keyboard.

PowerShell will do its thing, and the next time you try to open the Xbox Game Bar you should be prompted to look for an app.

Game DVR in Windows 10 can record and broadcast gameplay. It’s a neat tool if you want to record highlights from your games, or if you like to stream gameplay. Game DVR works via the game bar that you can bring up with the Win+G shortcut. You can teach the game bar which apps are games and even use it to record apps that aren’t games. The game bar has two recording modes; one for recording game play, and one for recording a short clip. By default, the short clips are only 30 seconds long. If you want, you can record longer clips with Game DVR in Windows 10. Alternatively, you can also record shorter clips.

You might notice in the screenshot below that there’s an exclamation mark just above the record clip button. If you’re seeing the same thing on your system, that means recording clips is disabled. That’s some that is easily rectified. Just read ahead to learn how.

To record longer clips with Game DVR, you need to go to the Xbox app’s settings.

On the Settings screen, go to the Game DVR tab. Scroll down to the ‘Background recording’ section and enable it. The exclamation mark at the top of the record lip button on the game bar will disappear once you enable this option.

We should point out that recording game clips and recording gameplay are bit different in the Xbox app. The options are poorly labelled but you can record game play for up to 2 hours, and you can record game clips for up to 10 minutes. To record these shorter game clips, you must have background recording enabled.

Once enabled, open the ‘Record the last’ dropdown. The default value set for these clips is 30 seconds. To record longer clips with Game DVR, select one of the other time options. If you want to record a shorter clip, you only have one option; 15 seconds. That’s the only length that’s shorter than the default 30 seconds.

We should point out that recording clips takes a toll on your system’s resources. This is because it’s constantly recording your gameplay in the background. When you click the record clip button on the game bar, it uses that recording to get those last few minutes. In stark contrast, the record feature on the game bar records everything within a 2 hour period after you choose to record it. It takes less of a toll on your system and also lets you record a longer video.

If your system isn’t packing the latest, and the best gaming hardware, background clips might give you a lesser gaming experience.
