iOS 10 comes with a neat new feature for compiling photos into short movies or slideshows called Memories.
The photos included in these short movies are added based on the time and place they were taken. Users can set a mood for the accompanying music and speed up or slow down the transition of the photos.
iPhone Photo Memories
If you’re running iOS 10+ visit the Photos app and go to the newly added ‘Memories’ tab. You can see the first few movies that have automatically been created. There will likely be one summing up the photos you took last year and perhaps two or three more created using photos that were all taken at the same location or within a certain time frame.
Memories, however, aren’t all auto-generated though. Users have the freedom to choose which photos should be used in a “memory” and what it should be called.
Here’s your complete guide to creating, editing, viewing & sharing, and exporting Memories in iOS 10.
How to Create Memories on iPhone
To create memories, open the Photos app and go to the ‘Albums’ tab.
Tap the plus button at the top left and create a new album. Name the album what you’d want the memory to be called. The name of the album and the date of the photos included in the memory become the opening title of it.
When you create a new album, you’re asked to add photos to it. Select the photos you want to include in the memory. You can add/remove them later if you want so don’t worry if you’ve missed a few or added one too many.
Open the album you just created and tap the date range shown for the photos. You will see a thumbnail of one of the photos in the album with a play icon on it. Tap it to create a memory from all the photos in the current album.
It takes only a few seconds. If you do not tap the thumbnail, the memory isn’t created.
iOS will not automatically generate a memory for albums unless you specifically tell it to. This is done in order to avoid taking up unnecessary space.
Scroll down to the very end of the album and tap the ‘Add to Memories’ option.
Editing Memories
With the memory now created, You can change the length, the music, and the photos included in the album. You can access memories from inside the album they were created for, or from the dedicated ‘Memories’ tab in the Photos app.
Select the memory and play it. Pause it immediately after so you can start editing.
To change the length, use the ‘Ahort’, ‘Medium’, and ‘Long’ options. If there are too few photos in an album, you might not see the ‘Medium’ and ‘Long’ option.
If you want to set the length of a memory down to seconds, tap the settings button at the bottom right. Tap ‘Duration’ and set the length of the memory.
To edit music, you have three options. You can use one of the music tracks included in the Memories feature, you can use music from your music library, or you can remove music altogether.
The music tracks that come with Memories all conform to a ‘mood’ such as ‘Dreamy’ and ‘Sentimental’. Swipe along the mood bar to change the music.
To add music from your music library, tap the settings button at the bottom right. Inside, you will see options for accessing your ‘Music Library’. If you want to remove all music/sound from the memory, select ‘None’.
To add or remove photos from a memory, tap the settings button at the bottom right and tap ‘Photos & videos’. Use the plus button at the bottom left to add photos and the delete button at the bottom right to remove them.
Viewing & Sharing Memories
All memories that you create can be viewed from inside the album they were created from, and from the ‘Memories’ tab. Make sure you add a memory to ‘Memories’ after you create it.
To share a memory, tap the share button at the bottom left and choose from one of the many apps how you want to share it. A memory can be sent over iMessage, email, posted to Facebook, and uploaded to Dropbox and Instagram.
Exporting Memory
To export the memory as a video, tap the share button at the bottom left and select the ‘Save video’ option. The memory will be saved to the ‘Videos’ album as a MOV file.

Does anyone know how to add photos/videos from different places/times than the original ‘Memories’ folder? When I try to add pics using the + key, it only allows me to add pics from the folder that the phone created, but I want other pics which I got off twitter from a friend, so the pics have different time/place attached to them.
how many pictures in memories can you share
My memories are stuck on the date I activated my phone… every time I look it says on this day September 15th… anyone else?
Many of my pictures are not full view in the memory video so you can’t see the full picture. This is a neat concept but not too advanced if part of the pictures are obstructed. Am I stuck or is there something I can do to change it? I’ve been playing around with it for a few hours but to no avail. Very frustrated
I want to be able to rearrange pictures. It seems I can only add or delete. Can I change the order?
Did you figure this out?
Is there a way to change the cover photo of the memory? With beta 4, I did not fin a way to change the picture iOS 10 used for the cover (picture on which the titles overlays)
Same question here. Any leads on that matter?
I want the ability to do that, too. It doesn’t seem to be available.

Photos are the way we relive some beautiful moments. But with the Memories, your iPhone will pick those important moments from the photos you took and will show them as a video. If you don’t know just yet how to get these memory videos on your iPhone, here’s a step-by-step guide for you.
Let’s see how to make memories videos on iPhone.
Make Memories Video on iPhone Photos App
Photos app on your iPhone picks and tailors videos for you as memories. In most cases, you will get notifications about photo memories video on your iPhone. Don’t worry even if you hardly remember any notifications at all. Here’s how you can find the memory videos on your iPhone and save them.
Firstly, open the Photos app on your iPhone.
Tap the “For You” tab at the bottom to see your previously created memories.
You will see the “Memories” headline on the screen. Tap the “See All” option against it to take a look at all the memories created.
Scroll down and select any memory you want to save as a video.
Once you open it, you could find the video title and the date or year period of the memory. To save the video, tap the Share button at the top of the screen.
Before saving, you can change the video aspect ratio and orientation. For that, select the “Options” at the top of the share sheet now.
You can choose any aspect ratio and orientation from the next screen. Tap Done to save the changes.
Now on the Share Sheet, choose the “Share Video” option (just below the app icons).
Your memory video is now created and saved to your camera roll. You can go back to the Albums and see the saved memory video. You can thus edit the video further, crop the video from the Photos app itself or do more.
Likewise, you can go through any memory created on the iPhone Photos app and create videos out of them. To get the best results, you can edit the memories before saving and change the titles as well. If you do not like the memories or the memory notifications at all due to some emotional reasons (or anything else), follow our guide to disable iPhone Photos memory notifications.

Macworld reader Sherry wants Apple to leave her alone. She’s disabled Siri and doesn’t use iCloud Photo Library. But she finds Apple seems to be paying attention in ways she doesn’t like.
I was distressed to see an item tentatively added to my calendar after texting about it with a friend. Also I have recently been presented with “memories” from Apple of photos and where they were taken. Although I have nothing to hide, I don’t want this kind of intrusion on my privacy. Also, is there a way to wirelessly sync my iPhone and iPad photos to my Mac without using the iCloud library?
I have a few answers for her.
On calendar items: iOS and macOS variously recognize calendar events, locations, phone numbers, and other sorts of data in Messages, Safari, Mail, and other apps. This even happens if you text someone, “Should we meet Friday night?” The “Friday night” will be lightly underlined in Messages in both iOS and macOS and you can tap or click it. This brings up an option to Create Event, Show in Calendar, Copy Event, or Cancel in iOS, and slightly different options in macOS. You might have hit Create Event by accident or something went wrong in Messages.
You can disable this in Settings > Calendar > Siri & Search > Find Events in Other Apps. You can do the same for contacts via Settings > Contacts > Siri & Search > Find Contacts in Other Apps. You can also go to Settings > Siri & Search and disable Siri further or look at individual apps, including those by Apple, to disable these suggestions.
IDG
Messages can automatically recognize dates and times to suggest calendar events.
On memories in Photos: You can’t prevent Photos from making memories, but you can stop it from notifying you. That’s slightly less creepy. Apple says it doesn’t share this information in any fashion, but I’m not in love with a feature that assembles information about me even on my own computer and I can’t turn off. In macOS, launch Photos and go to Photos > Preferences > General and uncheck Show Memories Notification.
Wireless syncing of photos between iOS and macOS: That only works with Photos for macOS via iCloud Photo Library (where it syncs everywhere you’re logged in) or via a USB cable, at which point you can simply import into Photos or via Image Capture.
Your iPhone or iPad may randomly display a Photos alert that says “You have a new memory – On this day (date)” right on the iOS devices lock screen. While some people may be thrilled with having the iOS Photos app resurfacing random photos from the past, other iOS users may be less than enthusiastic about the ‘you have a new memory’ feature putting old pictures in notifications on their devices lock screen.
This walkthrough will show you how to turn off the Photos “you have a new memory” alerts and notifications on iPhone or iPad.
How to Disable “You have a new memory” Alerts on iPhone or iPad
- Open the “Settings” app on the iPhone or iPad
With “Allow Notifications” disabled in Photos Notifications settings, the iPhone or iPad will no longer show any of the “Photos : You have a new memory” alert messages on the lock screen or within the Notification Center of iOS.
Note this does not disable the general Memories feature of iOS, it simply disables the ‘new memory’ alerts that are coming with the Memories feature. Additionally, this does not disable all notifications from the Photos app, but you can certainly turn them all off for the entire app as well if desired.
Sometimes the Photos ‘you have a new memory’ feature can be great and surface past pleasantries that you’re excited to see again, but other times the chosen Photos “Memories” can be questionable, or even bring up events, people, or images that you may not particularly want to be reminded about.
Whether or not you love or hate this Memories feature likely depends on how you use iOS Photos app in general, as well as what type of photos you take, what photos you keep, and the various relationships and events you participate in. There are a lot of variables involved, so if you find yourself less than satisfied with the Memories and Memories notifications in iOS, just turn the feature off.
As usual with iOS, you can always reverse the change and enable the Photos Memories notifications again by returning to the appropriate settings section and re-enabling the “Allow Notifications” switch for Photos Memories again.
While you’re adjusting Notifications settings, recall that you can disable any app notifications and alerts in iOS through the same Settings section. This offers a great way to remove any of the pestering alerts and notifications you may find appearing on your iPhone or iPad screen, whether they’re from third party apps, or the defaults like the “News” and tabloid headlines on the iOS lock screen, the TV notifications, the startling AMBER alerts, or anything else that is sending you notifications that you may not want. Customize away!
There’s often a fine line between a great shot and a blurry one. Action shots tend to see more of the latter. The slightest movement of the camera, the subject, or both can lead to deletable results. But instead of asking your friend to jump over the puddle again, and possibly again, get the shot right with the burst photos setting. It magically makes your photo-taking finger a bionic and more productive one.
What are burst photos?
Burst photos are a collection of photos taken under the burst camera setting. Your camera captures 10 photos per second with a long-press of the shutter button. Try doing that without iPhone burst photos. Two, maybe three photos per second is pushing the dexterity abilities of most people. Go ahead. See how many you can take.
How to take burst photos
Taking burst photos on the iPhone is simple. Yet, the difference between taking a normal photo and a burst photo lays primarily with the shutter button. A normal shot requires a simple tap. Burst photos are created with a long-press. Holding the button down activates burst mode. However, activating that varies between iPhone models.
How to take a burst photos on an iPhone XR or older
On pre iPhone XR models or older, simply open your camera app and frame up your shot. Then long-press the shutter button until you’ve captured your subject. With your phone sound on, you’ll hear the rapid clicking of the shutter doing its work. The camera takes photos as long as your finger is on the button.
How to take burst photos on iPhone 11 and newer
On iPhone 11, it’s slightly different. Press and immediately drag the shutter button to the left for portrait photos. Let go when you’ve captured your subject. For landscape photos, press and drag the shutter button upwards. The result is a series of photos to choose your best from. Inside the photo button, the number of photos taken in that burst will appear.
How to view burst photos on an iPhone
Once you’ve experimented some with burst photos, the fun part is seeing what you’ve captured. Here are a few simple steps to viewing burst photos on an iPhone.
- Start the Photos app.
- Tap “Albums” at the bottom of the screen.
- Scroll down to find “Bursts” then tap to open the Bursts folder.
- Tap the photo you want to review, and then tap “Select…” at the bottom of the screen.
- Thumbnails of all the photos appear at the bottom of the screen. Swipe through them all to see which you like.
How to save individual burst photos
After scrolling through the bursts, you might find a few you like. You might like them all. Here’s how to separate burst photos to save only a few. And here’s how to save all burst photos if you nailed the shot.
- To save individual burst photos, tap each photo you want to save as an individual image to your camera roll. A check mark will appear in the lower right corner of each selected image.
- When you’re finished, tap “Done.”
- In the pop-up window, you can “Keep Everything” from the burst series, or “Keep Only (#) Favorites” selected.
- If you choose to “Keep Everything,” you can always return to the burst folder and review the photos again. Otherwise, the burst series will be deleted, and only the selected photos will be saved.
What do you do with burst photos?
To understand the potential of burst photos, it’s key to know what is a burst photo? It’s a collection of photos taken at 10 photos per second. As long as the shutter button is held down, photos are being taken. Burst photos iPhone setting is particularly helpful in capturing a wide variety of photos:
- Crisp, clear action photos. Motion of any kind makes using standard mode challenging. Burst mode increases your chance of getting the perfect shot.
- Candid photos. Capturing unsuspecting subjects often needs a string of photos to find one that works.
- Portrait photography. It’s easier to photograph someone who’s relaxed. The burst setting avoids the “say cheese” pressure.
- Capturing interaction between people. Posing interaction usually results in posed photo results.
- Nature photography. Wind and waves sit still for no one. Burst mode helps capture it naturally.
- Group photos. Eyes can blink in the blink of an eye. With 10 shots per second in burst mode, your chances of all eyes wide open greatly improve.
Given its versatility, you might find burst mode your go-to setting. The more you know about iPhone camera setting options, the better your shots will be.

Your iPhone’s Photos app automatically creates slideshows that use your images and music to generate a feature called Memories. These videos represent periods of time or vacations you take. For instance, I visited Cancun a few years back. My iPhone recognized I was in an unusual place and created a Memories video of that period of time. Likewise, if you take an unusually high number of photos in a day, Memories will assume an event took place and will create a Memories video for that day. You may also see other Memories such as Best of Last 3 Months or Best of the Year. When you go to play a Memories video, you can customize its music, length, the images and videos included, and the title before saving or sharing it. Here’s how to edit and share Memories.
How to Edit & Share Video Memories in the Photos App
We’ve already gone over how to send a photo in a text message, how to add and send attachments to emails on an iPhone, and how to send a video in a text message. For more great tutorials about how to share pictures, videos, documents, and files, check out our free Tip of the Day.
Open the Photos app and tap Memories at the bottom of the screen.
Tap on the Memory you want to customize.
At the top, you’ll see the premade video. Below it are the image included. Do not try to remove images from the video at this stage. If you delete an image on this page, you’re deleting it from your iPhone and not just the Memory video.
Tap the play button on the Memory video at the top to edit it.
It may take some time for the video to download. Once it does, it will automatically begin to play. Tap on the screen to reveal your editing options.
Below the video itself, you’ll see three sections. The top section has words like Gentle, Chill, Happy, etc. Slide through these options to select the font for your Memory video’s title.
Below that section, it says Short, Medium, and Long. You can select the duration of the video quickly by selecting one of the three options.
The last section on this page shows the images and videos that are included in the slideshow video. You can slide through to see what is included if you want.
To edit the video further, tap the icon in the lower right of the screen that looks like three horizontal lines with a circle on each line.
Here you can change the title, select music, change the duration of the video, and add or remove images and videos included in the Memory video.
Once you’ve made all the changes you’d like, tap Done to return to the original edit screen.
