How to Uninstall Apps and Games on Android TV: Android TV is a version of the Android operating system for media devices. It’s usually found on set-top devices, like the Nvidia Shield, which are larger than a Chromecast. First, use the D-pad on your Android TV’s remote to select the “Apps” icon on the left side of the top home screen row.

Next, select the app or game you want to uninstall from the list.

Hold down the “Select” or “Enter” button on your remote and choose “Uninstall” from the pop-up menu.

Choosing the button will open up a new screen. It will ask if you want to uninstall the app. Select “OK.”

That’s all there is to it! You have now uninstalled an app or game from your Android TV.

Keep in mind that you will not be able to uninstall apps that were preinstalled on your Android TV set-top box or television set. For example, Netflix can’t be uninstalled on the Nvidia Shield TV; the option is grayed out.

I have one question: why do you have so many apps installed on your Android TV? You know, like that all those things you installed “just to try out,” then never used again? Yeah, that stuff. It’s about time you cleaned up that little set-top box of yours, that way you can make room for new stuff that you’ll only use once. It’s a vicious circle.

There are actually a couple of different ways to go about uninstalling apps on Android TV. Fortunately, we’ve got you covered on both. Let’s do this thing.

How to Uninstall Apps Directly from the Launcher

As of Android 6.0, you can not only arrange how your apps are presented on the launcher, but also uninstall them quickly and easily.

The first thing you’ll want to do is navigate to the app you’d like to uninstall, then long-press it using the select button on your remote.

When the screen background turns gray, you’re in the “edit” menu. At the bottom, there’s a trash can—just move the app to that can, then press the select button.

This will transfer you in to the “Uninstall app” menu. Select “OK” to completely remove the app from your device.

Once it’s finished, you’ll be back in the home screen layout edit menu, where you can either continue uninstalling applications you no longer want, or exit completely.

How to Uninstall Apps from the Settings Menu

While this method also works on Android 6.0, it’s the only way apps can be uninstalled on Android TV 5.x.

First, head into the Settings menu by scrolling to the bottom of the home screen and selecting the cog icon.

From there, scroll over until you see “Settings & reset,” then choose that.

In this menu, there are a couple of options: “Internal storage” and “Factory data reset.” You want the former.

This menu will break down everything that’s taking up space on your Android TV box, but we’re only interested in the first option here: “Apps.” Select that.

The section is broken down into a few categories, but the one you’re most interested in is “Downloaded apps.” This includes all the apps that you’ve installed on your box, both from the Play Store and ones you’ve sideloaded.

Scroll over till you find whichever one you want to uninstall, then select it. A new menu with several options will open—just scroll down to “Uninstall” and select that.

The Uninstall menu will now open—just select “OK” to completely remove the app.

That’s it, you’re done.

While slightly convoluted and more confusing than it should be, uninstalling apps on Android 5.x is still a relatively simple process. It’s even easier once your device is updated to 6.0 (or the upcoming Android N). The good news is that you’ll be back to binge watching Netflix and eating Doritos in no time, regardless of which method you have to (or choose to) use.

I have submitted an android tv app to the play store and got rejection email explaining the reason that: Not designed in landscape orientation. Your app has vertical letterboxing when displayed on TV’s. Please design your app to be displayed in landscape orientation. I have tried removing margins from the screen designs but it didn’t helped me. Can anyone help me in solving this issue. I have already added the leanback launcher intent and software.leanback uses feature tag with true value. Thanks In Advance.

You don’t want to just remove padding/margins without explicitly testing it. You have to deal with overscan on TVs, so having anything important at the very edge means it might not be visible on some devices. On ATV, the normal values are 48dp horizontally and 27dp vertically. If you’re using the Leanback library, this is handled for you.

Vertical letterboxing is almost always a case of something that’s inherently portrait orientation being show in landscape.

You should verify that none of your activities have a screenOrientation set (unless it’s landscape). It’s pretty common for people to forget one particular screen is forced to portrait (e.g., a login screen from a 3rd party SDK). A quick launch of each Activity/Fragment on an ATV emulator will also help you catch anything wildly wrong.

If your app has video, you also want to make sure you’re reasonably matching the aspect ratio. For example, you should display a 16×9 video instead of a 2×3 video on landscape.

Uninstall Android Apps from the App Drawer or Using Settings

There are two ways to uninstall a downloaded app on your Android phone or tablet: the Settings app or the app drawer. We detail both methods below.

From the App Drawer

Here’s how to uninstall from the app drawer:

In the app drawer, long-press the app you want to delete.

Drag the icon to the upper-right corner of the screen where the word Uninstall appears. Release your finger.

Confirm that you want to uninstall the app.

In Settings

It’s possible to uninstall an app using the Android settings rather than the app drawer. Here’s how:

Open Settings.

Select Apps & Notifications > See all X apps (the X is the number of apps currently installed on the device).

Select the app you wish to uninstall.

Select Uninstall.

Confirm you want to uninstall the app.

On Old Android Versions

The steps to delete or uninstall an app on pre-4.0 versions of Android are similarly simple. There may be some variation for among phone brands and Android versions, but this method works on most Android devices.

For Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), go to Settings > Apps, then follow the steps for the older versions of Android.

Tap Menu (hard or soft button).

Select Settings, then choose Applications > Manage applications.

Tap the app you want to delete.

Tap Uninstall to remove the app from your device. If there’s no uninstall button, it’s a system app, and you can’t delete it.

On Some Samsung Devices

If the previous instructions don’t work on your Samsung device, try this:

Tap the Recent apps button followed by Task manager.

Go to the Download tab and find the app you want to uninstall.

Tap the Uninstall button next to the app.

Tap OK.

If you don’t see an Uninstall button, you can’t delete the app using this method.

On a Kindle Fire

Amazon elected to go with an older customized version of Android for its Kindle devices, so the instructions to remove apps are different. You can manage your Kindle from your Amazon account on the web, but here’s how to delete apps using the device:

Go to the Home screen and tap the Apps tab.

Tap the Device tab to show only the apps on the Kindle (as opposed to all the apps you could potentially store on the device).

Long-press the app you want to remove until you feel or see a response.

Tap Remove from Device.

You’re not limited to the Amazon App Store when you install apps. You retain access to Kindle apps you installed through Amazon. However, you don’t necessarily have that same access to apps you installed through third-party app stores or side-loaded on the device.

Purchased Apps and the Cloud

Nearly all Android app stores let you keep your license to reinstall a purchased app. If you uninstall software that you bought from Google Play, for example, you can download it again if you change your mind later. Another example: To delete your access to an app you purchased on Amazon, you must do that through your Amazon account on the web. It’s a more involved process than uninstalling it from a device. This may come in handy if you deem an app offensive and never want to see it again.

McAfee refers to the malware in question as “Etinu”. It is quite similar to another malware family called “Joker”. They function in the same way, as they hijack text messages and make unauthorized purchases.

Now, these apps are no longer in the Play Store, but if you still have them on your phone, that’s a huge problem. If any of the mentioned apps are on your phone, uninstall them immediately. Having them on your device could cost you some serious money, and the problem won’t go away until they’re removed from your phone.

If the Uninstall button is not active for these applications, then these are come preinstalled as system apps.

If the uninstall link isn’t lit or can’t be clicked, it means that the app was installed by the manufacturer or carrier. To uninstall these bloat apps you’ll need to root the phone, a process that grants you permission to customize your Android device beyond its normal scope. I suggest XDA Developers for instructions and resources on how to do this. After you have root access you can start removing these preinstalled apps, but first you’ll need to search for and download a root uninstaller from the Google Play Store, because the stock Android uninstaller still won’t work.
