How to unlock a Microsoft smart phone

To unlock your phone, firstly you’ll need your IMEI code, which is a unique identifier for your device. Everyone wants to replace the password with something better. Well, we already have smartphones — and some of us even have smartwatches. These tools can log you into your computer with a smartphone or smartwatch.

The best, most polished options are available for Mac users with iPhones. Solutions available for Windows and other platforms are much more limited.

Mac and iPhone or Apple Watch

Mac users with iPhones have the most — and most polished — options available:

Knock allows you to use either an iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock your Mac. Walk up to your Mac with your iPhone on you and it will communicate with your Mac using Bluetooth Low Energy. Knock on your phone’s screen — even if it’s just in your pocket, knock on your pocket — and it will unlock your Mac. There’s no need to even pull your phone out of your pocket, much less turn its screen on.

There’s now a Knock Apple Watch app for unlocking your Mac, which provides some good security — if someone puts your watch on, they won’t be able to authenticate and unlock your Mac. If someone grabs your phone and you’ve set up Knock, however, they’ll be able to log into your Mac unless you remotely disable Knock.

Knock costs $3.99 for the iPhone app. You’ll also need the Mac app installed on your Mac — that’s available for free.

Tether works entirely using Bluetooth Low Energy. Walk up to your Mac and your iPhone and Mac will establish a connection. Tether will automatically unlock your Mac when you approach. Walk away from your Mac with your iPhone on you and Tether will notice the iPhone is no longer in close proximity, automatically locking your Mac for you.

There’s now a Tether Apple Watch app, too. One concern with this solution is security — if you’re nearby your Mac in the same area, it will automatically be unlocked. If someone grabs your phone, they can approach your Mac and have it automatically unlock for them. It’s up to you whether this is good enough security for your needs.

The Tether apps for both iPhone and Mac are free. Tether offers in-app purchases for additional functionality, but the standard auto-unlock and auto-lock features are free.

MacID takes a different approach. Rather than automatically unlocking your Mac, it allows you to unlock your Mac from your phone. This means you can use the Touch ID sensor on your iPhone to authenticate and unlock your Mac.

As with Knock and Tether, MacID also offers an Apple Watch app. Unlike with the above options, MacID can’t be used by just anyone who has your iPhone and Mac. It requires a bit more work because you have to actively log into your Mac via your phone, but that may be appealing to you. If your Mac has a long, strong password, using Touch ID on your phone could certainly be faster.

MacID’s iPhone app costs $3.99 on the App Store, and the required Mac app is available for free.

Chromebook and Android Phone

Chromebooks deserve an honorable mention here because Google has integrated a way to unlock your Chromebook with an Android phone. This feature is named Smart Lock, and it requires an Android phone with Android 5.0 or newer.

If you have a modern enough Android phone, you can quickly set up Smart Lock and pair your Chromebook with your phone without any third-party software. This feature doesn’t yet support Android Wear watches for some reason — you need an Android phone.

Windows PC and Android Phone

Similarly polished options for Windows just aren’t available. Previously, the most popular option was BTProximity, which used the proximity of a Bluetooth-enabled device (such as your smartphone) to automatically unlock your Windows PC. We wrote about using BTProximity in the past. However, BTProximity has been discontinued. We can’t find any comparably polished solutions to replace it at the moment.

You can still rig up something to do this yourself with various tools on Android. This solution requires EventGhost on your Windows PC to do the unlocking work, AutoRemote for communicating from your phone to your Windows PC, and Tasker for automatically sending a signal to EventGhost via AutoRemote when certain conditions are met.

The Unlock PC from Android discussion over at StackExchange has some detailed information on setting this up.

Mac and Android Phone (or Any Other Bluetooth Device)

If you have a Mac and an Android phone (or any other Bluetooth-enabled device), you could use the free Proximity tool for Bluetooth proximity detection and set up AppleScripts that unlock and lock your Mac depending on the proximity of the device to your Mac. This requires some manual setup, but it should work similarly to Tether when you’re done.

Linux and Any Bluetooth Device

On Linux, try the BlueProximity application for locking and unlocking your PC in response to the proximity of a Bluetooth device. It should be available in your Linux distribution’s software repositories, but may require some configuration before it automatically locks and unlocks the PC correctly.

If you’re sick of unlocking your phone constantly, Android 5.0 provides other “smart unlock” features. These can automatically keep your phone unlocked when you’re connected to your home Wi-Fi network, for example.

About Dynamic Lock

The Dynamic Lock feature came with Windows 10 Build 15031 in Feb 2017, and was an add-on feature for devices that had Bluetooth. Although not many older desktops are Bluetooth-ready, newer ones as well as laptops, notebooks and tablets have it as standard. For these devices, Dynamic Lock allows the user to set up a protocol so the Windows 10 machine can be unlocked when a designated smartphone is within Bluetooth range.

The logic behind this is that most users carry their smartphones wherever they go, so if they leave their desktop to go somewhere, it is being assumed that they took the phone with them. Once the smartphone is out of radio range, the system waits for 30 seconds and then locks itself. When the phone is once again in range, the PC detects it and automatically unlocks.

As such, this is a convenient solution for IT engineers and admins who are constantly on the move but are regularly logged into servers and other admin systems with privileged access. Even if they forget to lock their machines, they will almost certainly take their phones with them, which allows Dynamic Lock to secure the computer less than a minute later. It’s also very useful wherever there are systems with access to confidential information, such as HR, Operations and Senior Management. It’s not foolproof, but it offers a convenient way to automatically implement security in such environments.

How to Set Up Dynamic Lock on Windows 10

The following steps show you how to set up Dynamic Lock on your PC and pair it to your smartphone via Bluetooth.

Step 1: On your PC, go to Settings -> Devices -> Bluetooth & other devices, and toggle Bluetooth to On.

Step 2: Now turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone and make sure it is visible to other devices.

Step 3: Back to your PC, click on Add Bluetooth or Other Device (+ symbol), click Bluetooth and then click on your smartphone.

Step 4: Once the computer and phone are paired, go to Settings –> Accounts –> Sign-in options on your PC.

Step 5: Look for a section called Dynamic Lock and check the box.

Your Dynamic Lock is now set up. When you move away from your PC and out of Bluetooth range, the system waits for 30 seconds and then locks it down. To unlock it, you can either bring the paired smartphone back into Bluetooth range or unlock it by other means, like a login password.

How to Configure Dynamic Lock

Dynamic Lock works by periodically checking the strength of the Bluetooth signal with the paired device. It first connects to the device, checks the Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI), disconnects and then determines the threshold value of the RSSI. If that goes below a certain threshold, that means the phone is out of range, and Dynamic Lock engages.

There’s a workaround that you can use to define the actual distance at which RSSI threshold activates the lock. It’s not for beginners, but if you want, you can use a tool called draconyx.exe and try it out. Thurrot.com has a great article explaining how to do this.

Unfortunately, Dynamic Lock won’t allow you to set a specific amount of time before it engages, so you’re stuck with the default value. But it still helps create a more secure environment where sensitive data is concerned.

Locking your computer keeps your files safe while you are away from your computer. A locked computer hides and protects programs and documents, and will allow only the person who locked the computer to unlock it again. You unlock your computer by logging in again (with your NetID and password).

Locking Your Computer

• Press and hold the Windows logo key on your keyboard (this key should appear next to the Alt key), and then press the L key. Your computer will be locked, and the Windows 10 login screen will be displayed.

Note: Any applications, files, Web pages, or other windows you opened before you locked your computer will remain open while your computer is locked.

Unlocking Your Computer

1. From the Windows 10 login screen, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete (press and hold down the Ctrl key, then press and hold down the Alt key, press and release the Delete key, and then finally release the keys).
2. Enter your NetID password .

Samsung Flow lets you unlock your PC with your Gear watch, enables Smart View to mirror your phone’s display

Samsung is building bridges between its different devices through its Flow app. The app can already let you unlock your computer with your phone, sync notifications between your phone and PC/tablet, easily create a hotspot between them if you’re not near WiFi, and quickly transfer files. The newest update pushes things even a little further.

With version 3.0 of the app, two new features are being introduced. First, the app now supports linking your Gear S3 and Gear Sport watches to unlock your PC/tablet or handle your watch notifications while working on them. Second, Smart View has just been introduced so you can mirror your phone’s screen on your computer or tablet’s display.

However, according to some users, the Gear app has not been released yet so you can’t fully test everything. According to Samsung, it should land in a couple of days on Galaxy Apps and you’ll be able to get it up and running.

Following is the changelog then the link to grab Samsung Flow on the Play Store. You can also get the app from APK Mirror, but beware that it’s not likely to work on any unsupported device – it wouldn’t install on my Pixel 2 XL.
