I just got a DV6-7010us pavilion. I have always used the INSERT key when I copy data and insert it into a message, chat screen, document. this computer has an INS/PRT SC key. I cannot get the key to work to insert data into anything. How do you use this key. or is there another way to insert data that you copied, into something. I am used to using the Shift+Insert key on my old laptop. Right now, I am trying to keep in my mind to use the mouse to insert data. but would like to be able to use the key on the laptop keyboard.

Is there a way to do this.

You will need to identify your notebook for any of us to have a clue as to what your keyboard looks like. There are so many models made by HP that one must be specific.

Remove the battery and look for the label that says p/n. Post that whole alphanumeric character string here. That is your HP product number. G6 or dv6 or dv7 are all just model numbers.

You can also accomplish that by using Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste. Those are what most people use to copy and paste in most applications and productivity programs.

Since Windows 7 has the Snipping tool I don’t even need to use the Ins or Prt Scr keys any more.

I am not an HP Employee.

I see it. Thanks.

Here is a description of all of the available Windows keystrokes and shortcuts.

If you have already copied something into the notepad memory space with Ctrl+C, just put the cursor where you want it to go and tap the Ins key. The data that is currently in the notepad should be duplicated where the cursor is in whateveer text program you are using (MS Messenger or word for example).

I already tried that. don’t work. When you hit the ins/prt sc key, it makes a copy of your screen. the INS part of the key don’t work

The OP wants to use the key that has INS printed on it to SHIFT + INS. (That is a traditional Windows PASTE combo and it works if you have a working key that is set up as INS. Also CTRL + INS is COPY).

CTRL +V is a workaround but it doesn’t anwser the specific question asked.

I would like to use the INS function on the key marked PRT SC with INS in superscript.

I have had trouble finding the documentation on the specialty keyboards that are set up by HP in a way that’s a little different from other OEMs.

I’ve found a thread on MIcrosoft. It is not true that Microsoft took the traditona copy and paste keyboard combos using the INS key out of Windows. This is an HP issue. Microsoft does not drop its old keyboard shortcut standards on a whim.

I found it helpful to use GOOGLE search rather than try to find the soluton on the HP Support forums.

Have you had problems using the insert key on your PC keyboard while typing in Microsoft Word? Thanks to Kirk M., our attention was brought to this insert key/Word issue with all PC keyboards (Das Keyboard included). Follow these instructions to enable your insert key.

How to Enable the Insert key in Microsoft Word:

  • Go to file > word options > advanced > editing options
  • Check the box that says, “use the Insert key to control overtype mode”
  • Now the insert key works.

Thanks for reaching Microsoft Community. We are sorry to learn that you have troubles with the “Ins” key on your Surface Pro 7’s keyboard. Based on what I searched, it seems that it may depend on an app for this overwrite function to work. May I know what app are you trying to use for the Insert key to work?

Normally, it will work when you type a web URL on a browser’s address bar.

Please let me know the apps that you need the Insert key to work. That way, we can work a way to get the answers.

Looking forward for your response!

We are sorry for the late response. Thanks for letting me now that the expected function of the Fn+Shift+Del key combo works for pasting the clipboard which is equivalent to CTRL+V. When you insert one document (the source document) into another document (the destination document) that contains different formatting, the source document takes on the formatting of the destination document.

For example, document layout formatting (such as margin settings, headers and footers, and page orientation) takes on the formatting of the destination document, even when you insert a section break before you insert the source document.

Note To insert a document, click Insert File on the File menu.

Symptoms

To work around this issue, insert your source document as a subdocument in a master document. To do this, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: If the source document does not contain headers or footers

In the document that you want to insert a file into (the destination document), on the View menu, click Outline.

Place the insertion point where you want to insert your file, and then on the Outlining toolbar, click the Insert Subdocument button.

In the Insert Subdocument dialog box, select the file to be inserted (the source document), and then click Open.Note When you insert the subdocument (source document) into the master document, Word adds a continuous section break above and below the subdocument. Also, if the master document contains headers and footers, the inserted document will obtain the master document’s headers and footers.

The source document now retains its formatting when you insert it into the destination document.

Method 2: If the source document contains headers or footers

In the destination document, on the Insert menu, click Break.

Under Section break types, click Next page, and then click OK.

Note This places a next-page section break in your master (destination) document.

Again, under Section break types, click Next page, and then click OK.

Note This places a second section break in your master (destination) document.

Move your insertion point to the second section break, and then on the View menu, click Header and Footer.

On the Header and Footer toolbar, click the Same as Previous button to turn off “Same as Previous” formatting in the header. Switch to the footer, and turn off “Same as Previous” formatting in the footer.

Click Close to close the header and footer.

With the insertion point on the second section break, on the View menu, click Outline. Click the Insert Subdocument button on the Outlining toolbar.

Note Do not select the second section break before you insert your source document, because the section break will be deleted when you insert your subdocument.

The source document now retains its formatting when you insert it into the destination document.

Method 3: Update document layout formatting

Change the document layout formatting of the destination document to match the document layout formatting of the source document. This formatting includes margin settings, headers and footers, and page orientation.

Method 4: Insert the source document into the destination document as an object

In the destination document, click the location where you want to put the linked object or the embedded object.

On the Insert menu, click Object.

In the Object dialog box, click the Create from file tab.

In the File name box, type the name of the file from which you want to create a linked object or embedded object. Alternatively, click Browse to select the file from a list.

Workaround

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the “Applies to” section.

Thanks. We have received your request and will respond promptly.

How to enable overwrite-mode using Insert key?

How to enable overwrite-mode using Insert key?

RE: How to enable overwrite-mode using Insert key?

RE: How to enable overwrite-mode using Insert key?

Modern word processing applications, such as Microsoft Word, operate in insert mode by default, but can still be switched to overtype mode by pressing the Insert key. However, the cursor generally does not change into the letter-surrounding box seen on old text-based systems. Instead, an “OVR” indicator on the status bar is highlighted. Unfortunately, this is difficult to notice, which can mean the user only realizes Word is in overtype mode when the old text is erased in favor of the attempted correction. However, OpenOffice.org and some text editors retain the original cursor change in addition to the indicator.”

RE: How to enable overwrite-mode using Insert key?

No, you get me wrong. I have tried several programs Word, Notepad etc, but Insert-mode is working fine, when pressing Insert key and expecting to get overwrite-mode it does not happen. Yes, I have typed some text and it ALWAYS get inserted instead of overwrite. It looks like pressing Insert key doesn’t do anything. I have tried this on several computers and Insert key does switch between insert and overwrite mode. This is the only notebook I have ever seen that Insert mode does not switch between insert/overwrite mode.

Any idea what could be wrong?

RE: How to enable overwrite-mode using Insert key?

Do you have another Keyboard that you can test with? Perhaps you could try the “Insert” key on the available On Screen Keyboard (OSK.exe in Start Run) ans see what happens.

Maybe there is a Bios update that is available that you could try too.

Does the manufacturer have any thoughts on the matter?

RE: How to enable overwrite-mode using Insert key?

This is my friends notebook, so I don’t have access to it right now. But he has reported to me that Insert key was working fine without any problem, but now it just stopped working and he does not know what has done if at all is his fault.

I am just wondering how should I test if this is hardware problem or some bios problem or some Windows problem.

RE: How to enable overwrite-mode using Insert key?

to test if it is OS or hardware related, try this.

the onscreen keyboard should now popup.

now in a notepad etc. type some one-liner, e.g. The quick brown fox, now copy the whole line (right-click copy].

then several lines down (return several times), from the OSK click the shift button then click on the ins button.

that “quick brown fox” line should now have inserted itself on the new line.

if it does not, then it is an OS problem.

if it did, then it is a keyboard/hardware problem.
