Seat belts save lives.
That’s why Iowa State Troopers are pulling over teens wearing a seat belt.
On Wednesday Trooper Dan stopped students at Bettendorf High School.
“When he first pulled me over I thought that I was in trouble. I didn’t think that I was doing
“It’s just automatically people think that they’re in trouble when they get pulled over,” said Kenzie Clearman, student.
Teenagers who were pulled over wearing a seatbelt received coupons for a free slice of pizza and pop
Trooper Dan says teenagers are the least likely to wear a seatbelt.
He says while majority of people wear them, the goal is to have everyone wear one.
“We’re just trying to spread the ‘good news’ and recognizing people that are making safe choices and hopefully that will pass onto others that maybe don’t realize how important seatbelts are,” said Trooper Dan Loussaert, Iowa State Patrol.
In Illinois it’s the law to wear a seatbelt anywhere inside the car.
In Iowa it’s the law to wear a seatbelt if you’re in the driver’s seat or passenger side.
If you’re younger than 18 it doesn’t matter where you’re sitting. You have to wear a seat belt.
“If they don’t have their seatbelt on all the time they’re not really in the habit. They’re just wearing it because they don’t want a ticket so if we can inform them why it’s so important and we can develop a little more on creating it into not just I don’t want a ticket and this is really important and this is a life and death matter,” said Trooper Loussaert.
