John Piper was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Bill and Ruth Piper. His birthday is January 11, 1946. Since his father was also a church planter and itinerant missionary, the apple did not fall far from the tree. He was born to his older sister, Beverly. His family moved from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Greenville, South Carolina when they were both children. John Piper was only six years old when he was saved.
Wade Hampton High School is his alma mater. After graduating, he enrolled at Wheaton College, where he majored in literature and majored in philosophy. He later received a Bachelor of Theology degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He obtained a Doctor of Theology degree in New Testament Studies from the University of Munich from 1971 to 1974.
