In a majestic display of tradition and transition, King Frederik X has ascended the Danish throne, succeeding his mother, Queen Margrethe II, who abdicated after an illustrious 52-year reign.
The royal balcony of Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen witnessed not only the passing of the crown but also an endearing kiss between the newly crowned monarch and his Australian-born wife, Queen Mary.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen officiated the proclamation, where King Frederik, 55, shared the balcony with Queen Mary, 51, and their four children, creating a heartwarming tableau for the 100,000-strong crowd below.
The royal family, with Crown Prince Christian, 18, Princess Isabella, 16, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 13, stood united, waving to the jubilant spectators who sang the national anthem.
Addressing the gathered crowd, King Frederik expressed his hopes for the future reign, stating, “My hope is to become a unifying king of tomorrow. It is a task I have approached all my life.”
The newly crowned king emphasized his commitment to earning the trust of his beloved wife, the people, and forces greater than themselves.
Queen Margrethe II, retaining her title, has made history as the first Danish monarch in nearly 900 years to willingly relinquish the crown.
The decision, announced on New Year’s Eve, raised eyebrows, and speculation swirled that it might be connected to a royal scandal involving her son, King Frederik X.
Last November, photos surfaced, hinting at an alleged affair between Frederik and Mexican-born socialite Genoveva Casanova in Spain. Both HOLA! and the royal family have denied any romantic involvement, leaving the matter to rest.
Before the formal proclamation, a symbolic passing of the torch occurred as Queen Margrethe II signed the declaration of abdication during a meeting of the Council of State.
In a poignant moment, she gestured for her son to take her seat, solidifying his role as the new monarch. The room echoed with “God save the King” as Queen Margrethe II gracefully exited.
