On July 7, 2019, Manuela “Manu” Allen, a cherished high school teacher and mother of four, unexpectedly disappeared in the middle of the night. Her family learned this when they woke up that morning.
A bloodied bedroom floor, bloody footsteps, a knife, and blood streaks all over the family’s Olney, Texas house were the only signs that were left behind.
Peter, Manu’s husband, told detectives he had dozed off on the couch in the living room and that he had not heard anything odd the entire night.
Investigators were baffled as to how, considering the massive amount of blood that had been left behind, Peter and the couple’s two children who had been at home that evening failed to hear any indication of a struggle.
“Law enforcement thought there had been a physical altercation in the bedroom. According to Phillip Gregory, assistant district attorney for Stephens and Young Counties, Mr. Allen was possibly only a few feet away when the crime was committed. Investigators were concerned because there were two toddlers inside the residence because “Hey, how you not hear what was going on?”
Peter claimed that after watching television together the previous evening, Manu went to sleep in the couple’s bedroom and he dozed off on the couch.
His teenage daughter Kiara, who slept in the room adjacent to her mother, claimed to have arrived home that evening about 11:30. She claimed that while wearing headphones, she spoke on the phone with a buddy before dozing off.
Darian, the couple’s 20-year-old son, admitted to wearing headphones while playing video games all night at home with his parents.
Dee Peavy, the district attorney for Young and Stephens counties, stated that although Darian said he had not heard anything more than a noise in the middle of the night, he had assumed it was his father fetching something from the kitchen.
Nobody in the house noticed anything odd until Kiara wanted something from the laundry room the next morning and found blood in the hallway before realising the bedroom door was locked. The laundry room was only accessible through her parent’s bedroom.
Peter said he initially thought his wife had hurt herself after noticing the blood and the knife and drove to the hospital after learning her white SUV was also missing. Investigators found it strange that Peter and his daughter drove to the neighbourhood hospital to check for Manu before dialling 911.
