The person who gave me my start in radio was Mark Zelich. I can clearly remember his welcoming me into WSAW-TV in Wausau on my very first day there. I had no idea that this man would end up being more than just my boss, but also my mentor and a close friend for life. The broadcasting industry said a tearful goodbye to a legend yesterday.
The amazing Mark Zelich, lovingly referred to as “Z” by those who had the honor of working with him, passed yesterday at the age of 95. I am incredibly grateful as I consider his life and the influence he had on my career. Z and I shared one of my favorite moments when he was accepted into the NATAS Silver Circle a number of years ago.
Mike Gousha, Lynn Sprangers, Boyd Huppert, and I proudly watched as our former boss entertained the audience with one of the funniest speeches ever. Z had a remarkable talent for holding his audience’s attention, leaving them in stitches one minute and moved the next. The impact of Mark Zelich went far beyond the office.
The broadcasters Mark Zelich coached, the tales he told, and the numerous lives he improved are how his legacy endures. I want to thank Z for being the beacon of light that helped me enter the broadcasting industry today. I will always treasure the insight, wit, and steadfast support you have given me. Peace be with you, dear friend. Although we will miss you, the broadcasting industry will continue to benefit greatly from your impact.
