Is a Twilight Saga Midnight Sun movie release date confirmed? Is the film officially happening? Let’s consider what fans can expect.

Although it may seem like a million years ago for many, it’s difficult to forget just how much of a phenomenon The Twilight Saga was.

Stephenie Meyer’s 2005 novel ignited an obsession in the hearts of readers and Catherine Hardwicke’s 2008 film brought it to the big screen. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson portrayed Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, respectively, launching them into super stardom.

Four films followed between then and 2012, with Stephanie’s fourth chapter – Breaking Dawn – turned into two parts.

Since then, devoted fans have been eager to see a screen adaptation of Midnight Sun. Twelve chapters of the draft were leaked back in 2008 and led Stephenie to cease writing for some time.

However, the book was officially published in August 2020 and serves as a retelling of Twilight from the perspective of Edward.

Twilight: Midnight Sun movie release date

  • A release date for a Midnight Sun movie hasn’t been confirmed because a screen adaptation of the 2020 novel hasn’t been officially greenlit.

Although it’s not worth ruling out, there are some potential obstacles to address when considering bringing the book to screens.

Firstly, Midnight Sun is a companion to Twilight in that it’s the same events told from Edward’s perspective. Almost a decade has passed since the last film, so Kristen and Robert arguably wouldn’t be able to pass off being in their teens; both actors are now in their thirties. Perhaps a de-ageing approach – similar to that used for Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman – would be welcomed to make them look like they did in Twilight.

Then there is the issue of whether they would wish to come back, as both have gone on to have very successful careers, earning critical acclaim for a variety of projects. Additionally, Rob has long voiced his distaste for the franchise, and even told Empire back in 2008: “…the more I read the script, the more I hated this guy [Edward], so that’s how I played him, as a manic-depressive who hates himself.”

However, it’s worth acknowledging that he’s been less critical of the series in recent years: “I wasn’t entirely sure I was going to be an actor until after that movie so I’ll always appreciate it.”

Nevertheless, it’s hard to imagine him returning to reprise the role. So, if a movie were announced, perhaps we could see a whole new cast portray these iconic characters.

Midnight Sun: Catherine Hardwicke weighs in

In the wake of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, some Twilight fans have wondered whether there was enough footage left on the cutting room floor for an alternative cut of Twilight.

Entertainment Tonight recently asked her about it, but she sort of dismissed the idea, arguing that her film was “”a lot more in Bella’s head,” so no existing footage would warrant attempts to sculpt a cut of the film which confirms to Midnight Sun.

She did say that it would take a new film to bring the book to life properly: “[That] would be fun. It would be fascinating.”

Although, she did add that “Rob is Batman now… and Kristen is in a million beautiful projects. Who knows what would happen.”
