It might be fairly relatable behavior for most humans, but a guy like that has no place in a party of heroes. The two dragons in question actually want to die, and he’s one-sidedly denying his master’s wishes as well.
But time and time again, we’ve seen that their world is incredibly brutal and savage. You need the proper mindset, but Aeidi doesn’t have it in him. Usually, I get incredibly put off by those edgy, ruthless MCs in settings where maybe that is necessary and maybe not. Zephyr’s attitude, though, fits in perfectly in his world.
You have rampaging dragons, ancient beings losing their mind and control, human-infesting demons on top of the usual dungeon stuff, puppet master sadistic gods. It would be an insult if just the Nakama stuff would work, given what we know.
This world is a dark fantasy one, far crueler and kill-or-be-killed than our cozy Western 21st-century world. Too much sympathy for potential enemies just gets you and your loved ones killed.
Zephyr is perfectly adapted to this world, and his attitude makes perfect sense there. In fact, seeing as he didn’t kill either Aerdi or the smiling woman yet, he’s pretty lenient. This is a world where slavery exists, where half the clergy is infected with demon worshippers, and the other half is 99% corrupt.
