UPDATE: According to Rock Island County Brian Gustafson, the name of the individual has not been released yet, because family hasn’t yet been notified. He is described as a 62 year old white man from Silvis. An autopsy was performed on the man today in Rockford. The cause of death was determined to be “significant cardiac issues.” There was no evidence of trauma or foul play. The case is still considered to be open and active and is being investigated by the Rock Island County Integrity Force.
EARLIER: In a news release from the Rock Island County Integrity Force, Moline Police Chief Darren Gault said, “the Integrity Task Force will conduct a thorough and independent investigation which, at its conclusion, will be turned over to the Rock Island County State’s Attorney Dora Villarreal for review. It is extremely important that the public allow investigators time to gather information in order to answer questions and determine all the facts.” A team of ITF investigators are going through the neighborhood, conducting witness interviews, collecting evidence and reviewing videos, radio traffic, among other tasks. The department does have body cameras.
The State’s Attorney will make the decisions regarding criminal charges once all facts in the case have been gathered. The release said the investigation process will take time to complete and there will be updates on the investigation when possible. EARLIER: A suspect is dead after suffering some sort of medical issue while being interviewed by the East Moline Police Department (EMPD) early this morning.
According to a news release from the department, East Moline Police officers were dispatched to a burglary in progress at a residence in the 400 block of 17th Avenue on September 6 at 12:59 a.m. After checking the home, an East Moline Police officer noticed a man on a bicycle matching the description of the suspect near 17th Avenue and Sixth Street at about 1:23 a.m. The suspect fled but was stopped by the officer at Fifth Street and 15th Avenue. While still on the scene, officers noticed the suspect was having apparent medical issues. They immediately began first aid on the suspect while calling for emergency medical services. The suspect was transported to an area hospital and later passed away for reasons unknown at this time.
EMPD protocol calls for the Rock Island Integrity Task Force to investigate the incident. The Task Force is a multi-agency investigative group led by the Illinois State Police that impartially investigates incidents like this. No one from the EMPD will be involved in the investigation. The name of the deceased will be released after notifying family.
