Ron Klain Biography

Ron Klain is a well established American attorney and political consultant who served as chief of staff to two U.S. vice presidents: Al Gore (1995–1999) and Joe Biden (2009–2011).

Klain’s career has been marked by a series of notable roles. He started as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Byron White in the late 1980s. From there, he took on the position of Chief Counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary for a few years. During this time, he also served as the legislative director for U.S. Representative Ed Markey.

In 1995, Senator Tom Daschle appointed him as the Staff Director of the Senate Democratic Leadership Committee, expanding his influence in the political arena. Klain’s journey then took him into the heart of presidential campaigns as he became a key figure in Al Gore’s team, assuming the role of Chief of Staff.

However, his loyalty to the previous Clinton administration strained his relationship with some of Gore’s long-standing advisors, ultimately leading to his departure from the campaign in 1999.

After a brief hiatus, Klain made a comeback, working with the Gore campaign yet again in 2000 as the General Counsel of Gore’s Recount Committee during the contentious election.

He also shared his expertise as an informal adviser to Evan Bayh, a fellow Hoosier from Indiana, his home state. In 2005, Klain transitioned from legal practice to the tech world, joining Revolution LLC, a technology venture capital firm co-founded by Steve Case, one of the creators of AOL.

His professional journey came full circle when he took on the role of Ebola response coordinator in 2014. This significant position showcased his capabilities and his dedication to handling global health crises.

Following his impactful tenure in the Obama administration, Klain continued his influential career as an external adviser to the Skoll Foundation Global Threats Fund. Simultaneously, he maintained an executive role at Revolution LLC, where he served as Executive Vice President and General Counsel.

His impressive track record and experience in various domains made him a natural choice when President-elect Joe Biden announced his selection of Klain to serve as White House Chief of Staff in November 2020.
