You’ll hardly have time to blink before you miss the top 10 Sonic ROM hacks of 2022!
The speed at which you read, hopefully, will be much greater than Sonic’s speed. These articles don’t appear overnight, you know.
Over the years, Sonic has made appearances on a wide variety of game platforms, including handhelds, to the delight and chagrin of players all over the world.
The retro gaming community has once again worked its magic, giving us wild crossovers and new Sonic experiences to sink our teeth into, all in an effort to keep the blue menace fresh in the minds of the people.
You’ll find a wide variety of Sonic ROM hacks on this list, from Street Fighter-inspired action to a brand new mod so unbelievable that you’ll have to see it to believe it.
Exactly how long are you going to wait? Okay, let’s get right to the top with item #1.
1. Sonic Advance Revamped
One of my first Sonic the Hedgehog games was Advance 3, and it was one of the first games I ever owned.
Even though it’s not quite up to the standards set by the originals, I had a great time playing this on my GBA.
This ambitious fan effort seeks to improve upon the original Sonic the Hedgehog Advance formula by recreating the game from scratch and adding a plethora of additional features.
What sort of characteristics are those? Things like a larger cast of characters, with the traditional suspects joined by the likes of Shadow, Blaze, and Cream.
The updated regulations are what most interest me. They’re a lot more like those of the original games and a lot less clumsy than the ones we normally get in the Advance series.
2. Sonic Infinity+
The Sonic Infinity engine produces the most visually impressive Sonic environments to date. The cliffs even have that classic Battenberg effect from the original Sonic games, although this time they seem ultra realistic!
Sonic Infinity+ features some very fantastic visuals, but that’s not all. See what I did there? The entire game was created with Unreal Engine 4.
The game’s mechanics are also more satisfying than I had hoped. Every part of it serves its purpose.
Experience fan-created levels set in gorgeously detailed worlds. Even though a finished game is still a ways off, this is without a doubt the best mod I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing.
If you enjoy high-definition footwear and lightning-fast transfer rates, this is a must-have!
3. Sonic Project Hero
In terms of the potential it introduces, this initiative also stands out as a highlight.
Sonic Project Hero combines breathtaking visuals with a unique take on fast-paced racing and a wide cast of colourful characters.
Tails fly in a typical manner.
Knuckles moves with his typical ease.
They can all reach for their Extreme Gear (Sonic Riders’ skateboards) whenever they like.
Even though not many levels have been converted to the new engine, the demo provides a chance to get acquainted with the playable characters in a test environment replete with adversaries and brief platforming sequences.
More of this, please, in the future!

4. Sonic Smackdown
The inclusion of Sonic in Super Smash Bros. Brawl was a huge deal for my group of Sonic-obsessed buddies (and myself).
Still, why stop there when you can create a full fighting game based on the property instead?
In the vein of Street Fighter, Sonic Smackdown is a 2D fighter played from the side.
It has stunning 3D visuals and a cast of 12 playable characters that includes Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, and Rouge.
The game may be played online versus friends via Parsec, in addition to the arcade and training modes.
5. Sonic World
My personal favourite Sonic ROM hack has to be Sonic World, which brings us to the next entry on our list.
Take a peek into the sky; there’s a whole other universe up there! This ROM has great visuals and features many exciting and surprising levels.
In all of my writings, I’ve made it very clear that the Sonic Adventure games are some of my favourites. In my opinion, Sonic’s best work is found in 3D adventure games.
This patch amps up the best features of games like Sonic Adventure 2 Battle by a factor of 11, granting us access to 40 additional playable characters and 50 new levels.
It’s one of the most significant upgrades currently available.
However, I’m willing to wager that there is no Chao Garden. In your collective mind, that is what you are thinking, correct?
Certainly, there is! Also, it supports multiplayer online for some fast-paced hedgehog fun with your pals.
6. Sonic GT
Even though SEGA seems determined to create a new formula for Sonic games, momentum-based platforming will always be the greatest choice.
Well, if you want to win with this fantastic 3D platformer engine, speed is the name of the game.
Sonic GT lets you play as a wide variety of series regulars throughout a number of visually impressive stages.
With its snappy controls and well-designed levels, this game will keep you coming back for weeks.
Sonic’s moveset is quite extensive in this game. Unlike in the canonical games, these include the light dash, the drop dash, and even wall-jumping.

7. Sonic Time Twisted
In the 1990s, a new Sonic game came out at least once a month, if not more frequently. Our next book, however, has been in the works for over ten years.
The entire experience of playing through this Sonic adventure is enjoyable. It’s like reliving some of Sonic’s greatest moments in a hall of fame run; you’ll recognise the characters and locations, but they’ll still feel fresh and new thanks to the inclusion of both classic and brand-new levels.
In that case, what other fascinating elements do we see? Let’s start with the obvious: the ability to travel through time.
Yes, you’re right, and I suppose the title gave it away…
You may look forward to brand new elemental shields and mind-blowing 3D environments. Indeed, this mod is the real deal and an absolute necessity.
8. Sonic vs. Darkness
This fan-made video game was originally a sprite-based animation, as the name might imply.
This ROM hack differs from the originals in that it takes its cues from the Sonic Rush games rather than originals, and so includes the boosts and other elements of the Sonic Rush games.
The Rush books were among my favourites.
This sounds like an improved version of it.
Give this one a shot even if you’re on the fence about it or have never tried any of the Rush games before.
9. Metal Sonic: Hyperdrive
Tails and his customised Metal Sonic touch are essential if you are a fan of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game but have already mastered it.
Exactly; he steals a bunch of stuff from Robotnik’s lab and uses it to construct Metal Sonic, who then saves the day.
At first sight, this game may look like the original, but it actually has whole new areas to explore and music to jam out to.
For even more mashup joy, it also has new playable characters and guest stars Kirby.
Fans of the original Sonic will be pleased to see that it is essentially Sonic 1 with a new twist.
Nonetheless, if you enjoy incendiary mash-ups, you won’t want to miss the following game on our list of the best Sonic ROM hacks.

10. Sonic Utopia
Do you ever daydream about the ideal Utopia? If Sonic is included, then it sounds like a game you would enjoy.
This game is simply mind-blowingly quick because it employs a new engine instead of Unreal Engine.
There are opponents to bounce off of and rings to gather as you speed around, making Breath of the Wild feel a lot like an old Sonic game.
The levels are also very impressive in appearance, what with the sun’s rays reflecting off the water, the many levels that may be reached, and the many exciting locations to discover.
