Getting a job
After being a great baseball and football player at West High School in Torrance, California, Sarkisian did not get any college football offers because of his size (6′, 165 lb). In 1992, he started playing baseball for the Trojans baseball team at the University of Southern California (USC) without a scholarship. He had trouble playing baseball in NCAA Division I, so after a semester he moved to El Camino College, a two-year community college near his hometown of Torrance where he played shortstop.
Football at El Camino College
Sarkisian got back into football because one of his teachers, John Featherstone, the head football coach at El Camino, told him to. In 1993, when Sarkisian was a redshirt freshman, he was named All-Mission Conference. During his second year of junior college, he was named an All-American after setting a national record by completing 72.4% of his passes.
As a junior, Sarkisian moved to Provo, Utah, to attend Brigham Young University for the 1995 season. DeWayne Walker, who was an assistant coach for the BYU Cougars at the time, got him to join the team. Even though Kansas State and Washington State were interested, Sarkisian chose BYU because it had more Davey O’Brien and Heisman-winning quarterbacks in the last 10 years than any other Division I-A school had in the 50 years before that. John Walsh, the quarterback who started before Sarkisian, was also from Torrance and was a friend of Sarkisian. Walsh quit school a year early to enter the 1995 NFL Draft, which left a hole in the depth chart. In December 1994, Sarkisian accepted a scholarship from BYU.
At BYU, Sarkisian was coached by Norm Chow, who was in charge of the offense, and LaVell Edwards, who was the head coach. As a junior, Sarkisian threw for 3,437 yards and 20 touchdowns, which earned him All-Western Athletic Conference honors. At the end of the season, Sarkisian led BYU to a 45–28 win over Fresno State by completing 31 of 34 passes for 399 yards and three touchdowns. His completion percentage in the game (91.2 percent) set an NCAA record at that time.
1996
As a senior, Sarkisian led BYU to a 41–37 upset win over Texas A&M in the Pigskin Classic by throwing for 536 yards and six touchdowns. The 536 yards were the most that any player has ever thrown against Texas A&M. The game was over when Sarkisian threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to K. O. Kealaluhi, which sealed the win.
At the end of the regular season, BYU had a 13–1 record, and in the WAC Championship Game, they beat Wyoming 28–25. During the season, Sarkisian threw for 4,027 yards and 33 touchdowns. His 173.6 rating as a passer was the best in the NCAA. He was the WAC Offensive Player of the Year and a second-team All-American because of what he did. Sarkisian also won the Sammy Baugh Trophy for being the best quarterback in the country. He is the seventh BYU quarterback to win this award. In December 1996, he was also on the cover of TV Guide. The Cotton Bowl Classic was the last game of the season. BYU beat Kansas State 19–15. In the fourth quarter, Sarkisian threw two touchdown passes that helped the Cougars win after falling behind. At the end of the season, BYU had a record of 14–1 and was ranked fifth in both the AP Poll and the Coaches’ Poll. The Cougars won 14 games in one season, making them the first Division I-A team in NCAA history to do so. Sarkisian’s career passing efficiency rating of 162.0 puts him at number 18 on the list of all NCAA players.
After getting his associate’s degree in general studies from El Camino in 1994, Sarkisian went to BYU to get his bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1997.
USC and the Raiders
The next season, Sarkisian went to USC to work with his old coach, Norm Chow. Pete Carroll, the new head coach at USC, hired Chow to be in charge of the offense. In 2001, Sarkisian helped with the offense. In 2002 and 2003, he was the quarterbacks coach. In 2004, Sarkisian moved to the professional ranks as quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders of the NFL. Oakland passed for more than 4,000 yards, which put them in eighth place among the 32 NFL teams in passing yards. Sarkisian went back to USC for the 2005 season. He was still the quarterbacks coach, but he also took on the role of assistant head coach. Sarkisian interviewed with the Raiders in January 2007 for their open head coaching job, but he decided to stay at USC instead. Lane Kiffin left USC to become the head coach of the Raiders, so USC hired Sarkisian to take his place as offensive coordinator.
