Sidney Poitier KBE was an American actor, director, and diplomat who lived from February 20, 1927, until January 6, 2022.

He received the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1964, being the first black actor and Bahamian to do so.

He was honoured with two highly competitive Golden Globe Awards, a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album, and a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award.

One of the final notable actors from the Hollywood film industry’s Golden Age was Sidney Poitier.

Sydney Tamiia Poitier: Bio

Sydney Tamiia Poitier, a Bahamian-American actress who was born on November 15, 1973, works in both television and movies.

Poitier was born in Los Angeles; her parents are Canadian actress Joanna Shimkus and Bahamian actor Sir Sidney Poitier.

Her mother is Irish and Jewish from Lithuania. Anika is her elder sister. From her father’s first marriage, she also has four elder half-siblings named Beverly, Pamela, Sherri, and Gina.

The Poitier relatives on her grandfather’s side are said to have immigrated from Haiti and were likely among the runaway slaves who founded maroon villages throughout the Bahamas, according to Poitier’s great-uncle.

Poitier was unexpectedly born in Miami, Florida, while his parents were on vacation, giving him instant U.S. citizenship. His family was originally from the Bahamas, which was still a Crown territory at the time. He was born and raised in the Bahamas, but at the ages of 15, and 16, he travelled to Miami and then to New York City.

He joined the American Negro Theatre, and the movie Blackboard Jungle gave him his first major part as a high school student (1955). The Defiant Ones, a 1958 film starring Poitier and Tony Curtis as chained-up escapees, garnered nine Academy Award nominations.

Both performers were nominated for Best Actor, with Poitier’s being the first nomination for a Black actor. They were both nominated for Best Actor at the BAFTAs, with Poitier taking home the honour. Poitier also received the Silver Bear for Best Actor for his work in the movie.

His role as a handyman assisting a group of German-speaking nuns in the construction of a chapel in Lilies of the Field (1963) earned him the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Actor in 1964.

Sydney Tamiia Poitier: Early Years

On February 20, 1927, Sidney Poitier was born in Miami, Florida. He was one of Evelyn (née Outten) and Reginald James Poitier’s seven children; they were Afro-Bahamians with a farm on Cat Island.

To supply wholesalers with tomatoes and other produce, the family would fly to Miami. In Nassau, his father was a taxi driver as well. Poitier was suddenly born in Miami while his parents were visiting for business.

Despite being three months preterm and having little chance of surviving, his parents stayed in the city for three months to care for him. Poitier was raised in the Bahamas, which was a British Crown territory at the time. He was a citizen of the US by virtue of his birth.

Some people think that the Poitier family originated in Haiti and that they were among the maroon communities that they founded on Cat Island and other islands in the Bahamas as fugitive slaves.

At the time, there were no Poitiers in the Bahamas who had French ancestry because Poitier was originally a French name.

The name Poitier originates from planter Charles Leonard Poitier, who emigrated from Jamaica in the early 1800s; nevertheless, there had been a Poitier of French descent on Cat Island.

86 slaves of West African descent who were living on his wife’s farm on Cat Island in 1834 retained the surname Poitier, which had been introduced to the English-speaking world since the Norman Conquest in the eleventh century.

Although Charles Leonard Poitier may have been originally from Haiti, he had previously resided in Jamaica.

Sydney Tamiia Poitier: Career

When Poitier joined the American Negro Theater, the public turned him away. Poitier was tone deaf, which prevented him from singing, in contrast to what was expected of black actors at the time.

He committed the following six months to perfecting his acting abilities and getting rid of his audible Bahamian accent in order to succeed on stage.

He based his eminent speech pattern on Norman Brokenshire, a radio host. He was spotted and offered a prominent role in the Broadway production of Lysistrata on his second try, and even though it played for only four days, he was invited to fill in for Anna Lucasta.

Poitier was a founding member of the Committee for the Negro in the Arts (CNA), a group whose members were dedicated to a left-wing interpretation of racial and class exploitation, in 1947.

He was a Vice Chair of the CNA in the early 1950s, among other CNA-related pursuits.

He participated in a pageant created by Alice Childress and Lorraine Hansberry for the Negro History Festival in 1952, which was staged by the Marxist Harlem monthly newspaper Freedom.

He was one of numerous narrators in the pageant.

His involvement in such gatherings and CNA in general, combined with his associations with other communist Black entertainers like Paul Robeson and Canada Lee, contributed to his subsequent blacklisting for a while.

The reason Alfred Palca, the writer and producer of one of Sidney Poitier’s earliest movies, the 1954 Go Man Go, was blacklisted included even his association with Poitier.

Despite being requested to do so in conjunction with his potential role in Blackboard Jungle, Poitier never took the loyalty oath (1955).

Sydney Tamiia Poitier: Husband

Poitier first wed Juanita Hardy on April 29, 1950, and they were married until 1965. Despite moving to Mount Vernon in Westchester County, New York, in 1956, Poitier reared his family at a home on the Hudson River in Stuyvesant, New York.

Actress Diahann Carroll and Poitier had a nine-year relationship starting in 1959. On January 23, 1976, he wed Canadian actress Joanna Shimkus, who had acted alongside Sidney Poitier in the 1969 film The Lost Man; they were wed until his passing.

He has two children with his second wife, Anika Tamiia, and four with his first wife, Beverly, Pamela, Sherri, and Gina.

Poitier had eight grandkids and three great-grandchildren in addition to his six daughters. There were 23 unaccounted-for family members in Poitier’s family when Hurricane Dorian slammed the Bahamas in September 2019.

Sydney Tamiia Poitier: Awards

In August 2009, President Barack Obama presented Poitier with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, making him the first Black actor to do so for the film Lilies of the Field (1963). In addition, he won a British Academy Film Award, a Grammy, and two Golden Globes.

Throughout his lifetime, he was given many honours, including the Academy Honorary Award in 2001 for his lifelong contribution to the cinema industry. Poitier was given the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1992.

Poitier was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994. He was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award by the Golden Globes in 1981, and the BAFTA Fellowship in 2016.

Poitier was given the Kennedy Center Honor in 1995, and Barack Obama presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.

In 1974, Queen Elizabeth II conferred upon him the honorary title of Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Fine Arts in 1986 and delivered the University of Miami graduating class’s Commencement Address.
