However, with the final season of the popular anime being split into three sections, released over several years, it can be difficult to remember exactly what happened in the previous broadcast.

For those fans who need a quick summary of what’s happened so far; here is an episode-by-episode recap of Attack on Titan season 4.

Attack on Titan season 4 part 1 recap

Episode 1 ‘The Other Side of the Sea’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 1 opened with Marleyan Warrior Candidates Falco Grice, Colt Grice, and Gabi Braun fighting against the Mid-East Allied Forces; with the latter ultimately proving her worth by blowing up an armored train.

Zeke, Reiner, Pieck, and Porco are able to claim victory for Marley, but the advancement of new Titan-killing technology reminds those in charge just how important it is that they gain the Founding Titan’s powers.

Episode 2 ‘The Midnight Train’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 2 had the Warrior Candidates celebrating on the train journey back to the capital city of Liberio, with Reiner acknowledging that he met ‘all types of people’ on Paradis – not all of them evil devils as the propaganda claims.

Willy Tybur and the Marleyan generals are planning an enormous festival with dignitaries from around the world set to attend – they will announce plans to invade Paradis Island.

Episode 3 ‘The Door of Hope’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 3 featured a flashback to when the original Warrior candidates were sent to Paradis; with Marcel being eaten before they were able to reach the Walls.

As Falco struggles with the trials and tribulations that come with being a Warrior Candidate, as well as his feelings for Gabi, he meets a wounded soldier to who he immediately takes a liking to.

Episode 4 ‘From One Hand to Another’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 4 had Falco sending letters from the wounded soldier to his ‘family’, only for the festival celebrations to take over his day ahead of the Tybur announcement.

On their way to the festival, Falco introduces Reiner to the soldier in a room underneath the festival stage; Reiner immediately recognizes that the wounded soldier is Eren!

Episode 5 ‘Declaration of War’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 5 had Willy Tybur reveal the true history of Paradis; that Marley and King Fritz had negotiated a peace settlement to end The Great Titan War, but that this is now in question because Eren has the Founding Titan.

Underneath the very same stage, Reiner becomes horrified that Eren has traveled to his homeland, only to break down as he realizes that the two were not so different after all…Eren transforms into the Attack Titan and eats Willy Tybur in front of the world.

Episode 6 ‘The War Hammer Titan’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 6 has Lara Tybur attacking Eren as the War Hammer Titan, after he decimated a large portion of the crowd including several members of the Warrior Candidates.

Eren is saved at the last moment by Levi and the Scouts, who arrived just in time thanks to the letters that Falco sent. Whilst several Scouts are killed in the battle, the Jaw Titan becomes surrounded by Eldian warriors.

Episode 7 ‘Assault’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 7 had the momentum of the battle swinging back-and-forth thanks to the introduction of both Zeke on the side of Marley, and Armin on the side of the Scouts.

Zeke is felled by Levi and Eren uses the Jaw Titan to crush Lara Tybur’s crystal; drinking her blood confirms that Eren now has the power of the War Hammer Titan too. However, Reiner is able to regain consciousness and joins the fight.

Episode 8 ‘Assassin’s Bullet’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 8 featured Eren and the Scouts retreating from Liberio, just as Falco and Gabi sneak on board their airship; Gabi shoots and kills Sasha.

The two are beaten to a pulp by the enraged Scouts and are led into the airship’s control room where Zeke is regenerating his limbs; he has betrayed Marley and staged a mock fight against Levi in order to escape with them.

Episode 9 ‘Brave Volunteers’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 9 was somewhat of a de-brief episode. Zeke and Eren agree that they can use the threat of The Rumbling to keep Eldians safe, whilst a heartbroken Nicolo invites Sasha’s family to his restaurant.

Elsewhere, Levi is keeping Zeke in a forest prison, with Dot Pyxis keeping the anti-Marley volunteers detained so that they cannot aid Zeke.

Episode 10 ‘A Sound Argument’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 10 included a flashback to just after Paradis opened up to the world – Hange struggles to keep track of the political maneuvring, with the rival Azumabito faction looking to mine the island for its natural resources.

Eren’s behavior is becoming more and more erratic which concerns his closest friends; however, this is stemmed with confirmation that Historia is now pregnant and that she will soon inherit the Beast Titan from Zeke.

Episode 11 ‘Deceiver’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 11 has Falco and Gabi escape the Scouts’ jail only to be taken in by a family of farmers, the parents of the late-Sasha. Kaya, one of the girls living there, offers to introduce them to a Marley friend after she sees through their poorly-worded fake backstory.

Hange struggles to deal with a group of Scouts who have been leaking information about Eren, whilst Reiner suggests that Marley makes a surprise attack before Zeke comes up with another plan.

Episode 12 ‘Guides’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 12 confirms that Yelena had been plotting with Eren from the start, with Onyankopon telling Hange how she is a mysterious person who has a habit of having people assassinated.

Commander Zachary of Paradis is then murdered in an assassination operation by the ‘Jaegerists’; an extremist group led by former Scout member Floch, who frees Eren.

Episode 13 ‘Children of the Forest’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 13 featured Zeke explaining how he once used his spinal fluid to transform a large group of Eldians into Titans, much to the suspicion of Levi.

Sasha’s family eventually takes up Nicolo’s offer, only for Nicolo to attempt to kill Falco and Gabi for murdering Sasha – Hange’s concerns grow when he says that he will die because Marleyan wine got in his mouth…Suddenly, Eren shows up and the Jaegerists take everyone hostage.

Episode 14 ‘Savagery’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 14 had Eren berating Mikasa, saying that he always hated her because she is just a slave to her mission as an Ackerman – this ultimately leads to a fight between him and Armin.

In the forest, Zeke uses his scream to turn Levi’s warriors into Titans (they had been given a shipment of Marley wine). Levi is able to kill these Titans and takes Zeke hostage again, but only after slicing off his limbs.

Episode 15 ‘Sole Salvation’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 15 was a Zeke-focused episode; with a flashback to his childhood showing how his plan to take back the Founding Titan stretches back not years, but decades.

In the present, this emotional turmoil causes Zeke to snap and purposefully explode a Thunder Spear attached to his body – both he and Levi are horrifically wounded by the blast.

Episode 16 ‘Above and Below

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 16 had Zeke survive the blast thanks to a nearby Titan putting him inside of its abdomen.

Within the walls, Eren and the Jaegerists have assumed control of Paradis when Pieck Finger shows up and claims that she will switch sides. Eren has her point out where the remaining Marley forces are hidden, to which she points to the floor…The Jaw Titan comes crashing through as Reiner arrives on a Marley airship.

Attack on Titan season 4 part 2 recap

Episode 17 ‘Judgement’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 17 opens with the Marleyan forces, who have arrived on a fleet of airships, trying to use anti-Titan weapons to kill Eren before Zeke can arrive.

The rest of the Scouts struggle to come to a decision on which side to support in the fight, with Armin’s theory that Eren is just going along with Zeke’s plan to stop Yelena falling on deaf ears.

Episode 18 ‘Sneak Attack’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 18 sees Zeke arrive at the battle to support Eren, only to be shot down from the walls by the Cart Titan and its anti-Titan canon.

Elsewhere, Falco confesses his true feelings for Gabi because he is scared that he is about to be turned into a Titan. He is briefly reunited with his brother Colt, but Colt then rushes towards Zeke after finding out that Falco drank some of the tainted wine.

Episode 19 ‘Two Brothers’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 19 sees Colt desperately trying to reason with Zeke, but the Beast Titan is forced to apologize as he lets out an ear-piercing scream that turns swathes of the soldiers into Titans; including Falco, whose transformation blast kills Colt. Falco proceeds to eat Porco; gaining the power of the Jaw Titan.

Eren rushes on foot towards Zeke as the chaos ensues, only to be decapitated by Gabi using an anti-Titan rifle. Eren’s head lands in Zeke’s hands and the two meet in The Paths, where Zeke vows to use the power of Ymir to make Eren understand his true plan.

Episode 20 ‘Memories of the Future’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 20 sees Eren and Zeke explore the memories of their father Grisha, as well as their respective childhoods in Marley and Paradis.

The memory takes a shocking turn when Eren encourages Grisha to kill Frieda Reiss (the previous Founding Titan owner), despite this only being a flashback – Grisha breaks down into tears and tells Zeke to stop Eren at all costs as he has now changed the past itself.

Episode 21 ‘From You, 2000 Years Ago’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 21 features Zeke pleading with Ymir in The Paths to stop all Eldians from reproducing, only for Eren to break free and make contact with Ymir.

Her history is as brutal and tragic as Eren’s, having been sold into slavery and forced to reproduce after gaining the power of the Titans. Eren says that she doesn’t have to be a slave to anyone anymore and that they should join forces. Outside, Eren transforms into the enormous Founding Titan as the Walls come crumbling down…The Rumbling begins.

Episode 22 ‘Thaw’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 22 sees Connie kidnap Falco, claiming that if he can get his mother (who is still a Titan in his village) to eat Falco, she might turn back into a human.

As the rest of the Scouts fight off the remaining Titans, Gabi explains how The Rumbling also caused Reiner’s armor to weaken…Armin realizes that Annie may have also just been set free.

Episode 23 ‘Sunset’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 23 features Annie escaping outside the Walls with Hitch; explaining how she only wants to be reunited with her father in Marley.

As Armin and Gabi try catching up to Connie and Falco; Hange is approached by Pieck and Theo Magath…who want to join her in stopping Eren from destroying the world.

Episode 24 ‘Pride’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 24 sees Armin and Gabi rescuing Falco, ultimately resolving the issue with Connie in his village too.

Back in Shiganshina, Onyankopon and Yelena are about to be executed by Floch when the Cart Titan appears from atop the Walls; they are able to save the captors and escape with a wagon of supplies.

Episode 25 ‘Night of the End’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 25 has the group sharing a rather awkward campfire meal together; the former enemies are struggling to trust one another, understandable considering that they were fighting against each other only a few hours ago.

The Scouts agree to help stop Eren before Liberio is completely destroyed, making a plan to take a ‘flying boat’ from a port that the anti-Marley volunteers helped construct.

Episode 26 ‘Traitor’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 26 features the group initially trying to trick the Jaegerists into letting them leave in the flying boat, only for Floch to order the Azumabito’s to be executed.

The group fights hard against the incoming Jaegerists, with Armin and Connie forced to kill two old friends and former colleagues Samuel and Daz on the dock.

Episode 27 ‘Retrospective’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 27 shows the fight between the groups ensuing to the point that the flying boat is threatened with major damage.

The group are able to make their escape across the open ocean thanks to the sacrifice of Theo Magath and Keith Shadis blowing up a cruiser that Floch would have used to chase them.

Episode 28 ‘The Dawn of Humanity’

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 28 has a flashback to when the Scouts first went to Marley as would-be tourists with Mikasa wondering if anything that she could have said to Eren would have been able to change his mind about The Rumbling.

Eren recalls his bitter journey, including how he had to betray Zeke in order to start The Rumbling. His army of Wall Titans march across the ocean floor and easily destroy a Marleyan fleet stationed just off the shoreline…The Rumbling has arrived at the Marley mainland.
